Ridley Scott ventured into what was once known as the “sand and sandals” genre with a film inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus. This film marked the first of many performances by Russell Crowe in a Ridley Scott film; here he appeared as Maximus, a man who fell from grace as a soldier to become a slave gladiator greatly popular with the crowds. Scott and his production designer Arthur Max diligently re-created ancient Rome utilizing partial sets and state-of-the-art digital technology. Gladiator was a huge box office hit and was heavily nominated at the Academy Awards, winning for Best Picture, Best Actor (Crowe), Best Costumes, and Best Visual Effects. The film embraced many themes, including power and class distinction, and portrayed the brutality of the Coliseum like never before.

Abstract The purpose of this article is to provide clinical supervisors with information pertaining to state-of-the-art clinic observation technology. We use a novel video-capture technology, the Landro Play Analyzer, to supervise clinical sessions as well as to train students to improve their clinical skills. We can observe four clinical sessions simultaneously from a central observation center. In addition, speech samples can be analyzed in real-time; saved on a CD, DVD, or flash/jump drive; viewed in slow motion; paused; and analyzed with Microsoft Excel. Procedures for applying the technology for clinical training and supervision will be discussed.

In the Orwellian year of 1984, during Super Bowl XVIII, a commercial for Apple’s Mackintosh computer ran and became one of the most eye-catching and provocative sixty-second spots ever made. It was never shown again on television. As directed by Ridley Scott, the commercial portrays the grim world of the future dominated by Big Brother until a beautiful, athletic woman liberates everyone. For his next feature film Scott embraced the fantasy genre with Legend, a good versus evil tale set it a mythical land. Disaster hit the production when the entire elaborate set burned down. Miraculously, no one was injured, and the fairy tale environment was quickly rebuilt. The original version of Legend did poorly in front of test audiences and Scott cut it down radically, which hurt the film even more at the box office. In 1986 Ridley Scott Associates was expanded with the addition of a New York office, with more to come in the future.

Digital healthcare is a rapidly growing healthcare sector. Its importance has been recognised at both national and international level, with the WHO recently publishing its first global strategy for digital health. The use of digital technology within cystic fibrosis (CF) has also increased. CF is a chronic, life-limiting condition, in which the treatment burden is high and treatment regimens are not static. Digital technologies present an opportunity to support the lives of people with CF. We included 59 articles and protocols in this state-of-the-art review, relating to 48 studies from 1999 until 2019. This provides a comprehensive overview of the expansion and evolution of the use of digital technology. Technology has been used with the aim of increasing accessibility to healthcare, earlier detection of pulmonary exacerbations and objective electronic adherence monitoring. It may also be used to promote adherence and self-management through education, treatment management Apps and social media.

Orthosesare important tools to help patients in rehabilitation andas well asfor theirself-care of disables in clinics. Traditionally, orthese are made manually, which is time consuming and error prone. Digital manufacturing of orthosescan significantly improve the efficiency and reduce lead time compared to tranditionalmethods. This paper attempts to conduct a review on theorthoses manufacturing method based on digital technology including Computer Aided Design (CAD), Comupter Aided Manufacture (CAM) and Reverse Engineering (RE) by examining state-of-the-art academic and industrial reserch. In this paper, the rationale behindthe development of orthoses manufacturing methodsbased on digital technologies isaddressed firstly, followed by adescription ofthecharateristicsofideal orthoses manufacturing methods. Next, some selectedresearchesindigitalorthoses manufacturing in terms of patents and academic papers isreviewedand evaluated against criteria foridealorthese manufacture. Finally thetrend of digital manufacture of ortheseisdiscussed and summarized.

Unlike most forms of artistic expression, the feature film is the collaborative product of many individuals. The comparative impact of these separate contributions was assessed in 2,323 movies nominated for Academy Awards in the major categories. Two criteria of a film's impact were defined (best picture honors and movie guide ratings) along with 16 potential predictor variables (direction, male and female leads, male and female supporting roles, screenplay, art direction, costume design, makeup, cinematography, film editing, score, song, visual effects, sound effects editing, and sound) and five control variables (release date and the genre of drama, comedy, romance, and musical). Multiple regression analyses indicated that between 30 percent and 75 percent of the variance in impact could be explained using a subset of these factors.

There is increasing implementation of digital technologies in construction. However, the transformation effects encompassing digital technology implementation are yet to be fully comprehended within the context of construction. Therefore, this study was aimed to provide a holistic understanding of digital transformation in construction. The study drew on extant literature by studying 36 journal publications published between 2016 when digital transformation emerged in construction from the information systems field and 2020. This led to the development of an inductive framework using a grounded theory methodology (GTM) to highlight digital transformation in construction as a process where the implementation of digital technologies creates transformation effects that trigger strategic considerations for putting in place the enablers that facilitate transformation effects and for suppressing the barriers to it. Building on the framework, this study described and presented the strategic considerations for facilitating specific enablers and those for suppressing specific barriers as digital transformation guideline in construction. This study demonstrated how the implementation of digital technologies has increased the understanding of and provided the basis for digital transformation in construction.

Text effect transfer aims at learning the mapping between text visual effects while maintaining the text content. While remarkably successful, existing methods have limited robustness in font transfer and weak generalization ability to unseen effects. To address these problems, we propose FET-GAN, a novel end-to-end framework to implement visual effects transfer with font variation among multiple text effects domains. Our model achieves remarkable results both on arbitrary effect transfer between texts and effect translation from text to graphic objects. By a few-shot fine-tuning strategy, FET-GAN can generalize the transfer of the pre-trained model to the new effect. Through extensive experimental validation and comparison, our model advances the state-of-the-art in the text effect transfer task. Besides, we have collected a font dataset including 100 fonts of more than 800 Chinese and English characters. Based on this dataset, we demonstrated the generalization ability of our model by the application that complements the font library automatically by few-shot samples. This application is significant in reducing the labor cost for the font designer.

In 1992, on the five hundredth anniversary of the world-changing voyage of Christopher Columbus, Ridley Scott created a movie that showed the personal side of the explorer. Extensive research was poured into the project as well as insights from Columbus’s diary, which was inherited by his son. The production was lavish and exotic. The culture of the people who lived where Columbus landed is portrayed with realism and authenticity. The performances, especially that of Gérard Depardieu, are engaging. Ridley Scott captures history with meticulous location shooting and intricate lighting and composition that define the period. The film did not get great reviews and box office was unimpressive. Controversy over who Christopher Columbus really was and what he actually accomplished continues to swirl, but 1492: Conquest of Paradise brings layers of insight into his life and larger-than-life personality.

Digital technology has transformed the information flow and support infrastructure for numerous application domains, such as cellular communications. Cinematography, traditionally, a film based medium, has embraced digital technology leading to innovative transformations in its work flow. Digital cinema supports transmission of high resolution content enabled by the latest advancements in optical communications and video compression. In this paper we provide a survey of the optical network technologies for supporting this bandwidth intensive traffic class. We also highlight the significance and benefits of the state of the art in optical technologies that support the digital cinema work flow.
