Background: Intragroup evaluation is a process through which faculty members, students, and university officials examine the strengths and weaknesses of their department by assessing the educational unit to clarify the status of the department. Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the internal evaluations (IEs) of the departments conducted at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences (KUMS), Iran. Methods: In this descriptive study, IEs were performed at KUMS during 2012-2018. A summary of the documented information was collected by a checklist, and 22 IEs of the university departments during this period were reviewed. Data analysis was performed in SPSS version 21. Results: Most of the IEs were evaluated within six months. In 100% of the cases, the educational goals of a specific department, cases of the evaluation areas, and assessment criteria were determined and scored, and the lesson plans for the existing theory units were delivered to the students. In addition, documents of faculty members’ research activities, along with specific and codified programs for conferences, were reported. However, only 27.3% of the educational experts and 54.5% of the student representatives were involved in the group evaluation committee, and in 68.2% of the cases, there were lesson plans for skill units and clinical wards. On the other hand, 40% of the cases had a specific documentary program to assess the students’ academic decline/achievement in the groups. Conclusions: Formally, the IEs were performed correctly, and the obtained results briefly showed that they could achieve multiple academic goals. Due to the differences between the results and the observed state of the university, external evaluations are recommended as well.

The study aimed to identify the status of applying the principles of accountability in the public and private universities in Jordan. This was done by comparing between Yarmouk University and Jerash University from the perspective of the employees. The study sample consisted of 250 faculty members and one administrator at Yarmouk University and Jerash University. The questionnaire was used as a tool for data collection. The study reached several conclusions, most notably of which include the presence of statistically significant differences in the reality of applying the accountability principles at universities in general, and in the administrative, and academic fields. This, however, is dependent on the variable of the university in favor of Jerash University. The study concluded on a number of recommendations most important of which is the necessity of activating the accountability mechanisms and tools in three areas: administrative, and academic areas of public universities in a higher degree. It also includes a commitment with unified criteria of accountability to ensure the maintenance of an acceptable level of justice and transparency.

Background: The optimal use of research findings is crucial. One of the activities that improves application of research-derived knowledge is the knowledge translation. This study aimed to investigate the status of knowledge translation in Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. Methods: This cross-sectional and descriptive-analytical study was conducted in 2018. The sample size included 143 faculty members of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences selected using the stratified sampling and simple random sampling methods. The required data were collected using a standard knowledge translation questionnaire consisting of 50 items in 4 dimensions. The validity and reliability of the questionnaires were confirmed in the previous studies. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 21 by descriptive and analytical statistics. Results: The results showed that overall status of the knowledge translation was weak (2.46 ± 0.67). In this regard, producing useful evidence for decision making (2.77 ± 0.77) and promoting application of evidence (2.33 ± 0.88) had the highest and lowest mean scores, respectively. Furthermore, the overall mean of knowledge translation was significantly different with gender, type of center, and scientific rank (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Given the undesirable and weak status of knowledge translation, creating a culture of knowledge translation, training about knowledge transfer and utilization of research findings, creating incentive mechanisms, developing transparent processes and guidelines, and strengthening the interaction between knowledge producers and research users are essential.

Successful succession management is one of the necessities in any organization, especially universities. In the management of higher education, succession planning deployment requires proprietary methods. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the status quo and favorable status of succession management deployment from the viewpoint of faculty members at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences in 2017. In this descriptive-analytic and cross-sectional study, 95 faculty members were selected from the Departments of Basic Sciences and Clinical Sciences using nonrandom quota sampling. As for data collection, the Kim's succession planning questionnaire was employed. To analyze data, the SPSS Statistical Software Version 23.0 and the statistical tests of paired t-test, Chi-square and ANOVA were used to compare the status quo of succession management deployment with its favorable status and to study its decisive factors. The results of the present study revealed that there was a significant difference between the status quo and favorable status of t succession management deployment (P<0.0001). The results also demonstrated that there was a significant difference between the status quo of succession management deployment and its favorable status in terms of policy setting, evaluation of candidates, development of candidates, and system evaluation (P<0.001). Moreover, the results indicated that the greatest deployment in the status quo was related to the evaluation of candidates whereas the greatest deployment in the favorable status belonged to policy setting. The findings of the present study demonstrated that there was a clear gap between the status quo and favorable status of succession management deployment from the perspective of faculty members. Hence, it is recommended that qualifications-based selection be employed as the basis on which succession management and talent management can be deployed successfully and effectively at medical universities.

Research in the social sciences in Tunisia is stronger than it is in most Arab countries and compares favorably with Lebanon and Egypt. The several reasons for this position include an increasingly favorable attitude by the government toward the benefits of research, strong leadership within the Centre d’Etudes et de Recherches Economiques et Sociales (CERES), the long financial support of the Ministry of Education and the Ford Foundation, and the large number of higher degree holders who are motivated for research. CERES, a section of the University of Tunis, is the focus of the social science research with a full and part-time staff of more than sixty professionals. While most of the staff have been trained in France, several have taken higher degrees in North America. Because of the rapid increase in the number of foreign researchers in the past few years, it will only be a matter of time before an incident occurs and the government places conditions or restrictions on all research activities. A serious incident has so far been avoided in large part because of the close communication that most foreigners have maintained with their Tunisian colleagues.. The single most important thing that can be done to maintain the present research climate, in addition to the usual courtesies, is the distribution of both preliminary and final reports of research for comment and publication. Distribution should include the relevant ministries plus those individuals who personally aided the work. The editors of the Revue des Sciences Sociales Tunisiennes, the periodical of CERES, are interested in publishing articles in either French or English, as well as short pieces on the status of research.

The African Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin was established in September 1961, thus formalising the co-operation which had been developing over several years between faculty members in various disciplines and departments with research and teaching interests in Africa. The Program provides a centre for the co-ordination of such teaching and research. A certificate in African studies may be obtained in association with an M.A. degree in one of the university departments; at the Ph.D. level, African studies may be offered as a minor field.

Background: Social capital has an important role in empowering entrepreneurship activities and performance improvement inhuman resources. This study aimed to examine the relationship between social capital and entrepreneurship behavior of academic members of Qazvin University of Medical Sciences in 2018. Methods: The present study is a descriptive cross-sectional method conducted among all faculty members working in Qazvin University of Medical Sciences in 2018. In order to collect study data, two standard questionnaires including social capital scale (Nahapiet & Goshal 1998) and entrepreneurial behavior (Leon Daes Zamptakis and Vasiliss Mustakis 2007) were used. Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistical methods in SPSS version 20. Results: The results of the study showed that social capital and entrepreneurial behavior had a desirable condition. Furthermore, these two variables were statistically correlated (P-value < 0.05). Conclusion: Promoting the level of social capital in academic environments has significant benefits and a positive impact on entrepreneurial behaviors of academic members of the university. Therefore, managers should strengthen this key element in their organizations to upgrade their professional job performance.   Key words: Social Capital, Entrepreneurial Behavior, Faculty Member of the University.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to measure the relationship between organizational social capital and retention of faculty members in Kerman University of Medical Sciences in 2011. Design/methodology/approach – Using a stratified multistage sampling, 120 faculty members were recruited to fill the questionnaire. Findings – There were a direct and positive bilateral (r=0.65) relationship between social capital and retention of faculty members. Originality/value – The university officials and policy makers need to pay closer attention to some issues such as providing welfare facilities, salary and wages, benefits, interests and appreciation for faculty members.

Arthur Frederic Fishkin was born on May 27, 1930, in New York City, USA, and passed away peacefully in his sleep in Omaha, Nebraska on his 80th birthday, on May 27, 2010. He attended elementary and secondary school in New York, obtained a B.A. in Zoology from Indiana University in 1951 and an M.A. in 1953. He was awarded the Ph.D. Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Iowa in 1957. He held faculty positions at Louisiana State University, New Mexico State University, and Creighton University. His research activities dealt with enzymes and glycoproteins in connective tissues. He contributed to the training of thousands of students in the medical sciences for almost half a century.

One of the key resources of the organization and implementation of professional activity in any field of knowledge and the field of application is the inner motivation of the parties at its constant upgrading and improvement. Development and implementation of a format for life organization and conduct of professional development is fundamentally changing the understanding and attitudes of practicing managers to the place, role, and value of interaction with scientific and educational groups. This is most evident in establishing and maintaining their participation in the joint with the faculty of the University departments of scientific research, conferences and publications on an ongoing basis. First of all, it is typical for graduates of the graduate school, Ph.D. degree and continuing professional self-improvement, as a part of doctoral studies, and through independent programs. This generates obvious advantages of joint development of the sphere of professional management and scientific-educational environment.
