The introductory part of the paper highlights the threefold importance of Miroljub Todorović's poetry collection Svinja je odličan plivač [A Pig Is an Excellent Swimmer] (1971). The success of the book is important for Signalism and the work of Miroljub Todorović, as well as literary reception since a selection of his poetry (2009) and a recent Polish edition (2020) bear the same title. We refer to the image of the pig as in a diary and the poetry and prose in Šatrovački argot, so as to portray the poetic pig motif as complementary with the works of Signalism. Ultimately, we approach the 1971 poetry collection in a comparatist manner, comparing the poetry of Signalism to the poetry of the Polish poetess Ewa Lipska. In relation to being compared to the poetry of Ewa Lipska, the pig becomes a signum of a mankind deprived of love. Further comparison between the poetry book Svinja je odličan plivač and the poetry of the Polish poetess is founded on the similarities and differences in terms of their respective relationship towards machines, surrealism, the eyes motif, children, the concept of time, and the figures of Shakespeare and Socrates.

The paper studies didactic approaches used to create self-test units in textbooks. The system of self-control skills formation is considered on the example of textbooks on reading. The authors define the approaches of textbooks published in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, the Netherlands, Germany, France and Greece in Cyrillic, Latin and Greek alphabets to the organization of self-control based on the content and structure. The didactic features of these publications are described from the viewpoint of realizing the possibility of self-test of the tasks and exercises. German and Greek textbooks with an original system of self-test in illustrative and textual form are singled out and analyzed in detail. The types of tasks for the thinking development in schoolchildren are distinguished with the use of cluster analysis. The content analysis helped the authors in identifying the five groups of multiple or single selection of objects and things tasks and exercises, reproduction of previously studied letters, sequencing, correlation, and design. The paper shows the similarities and differences in the implementation of self-control skills formation in various editions of textbooks. The separate unit of exercises for the development of fine motor skills are considered as a means of developing graphic accuracy and a prerequisite for the transition to the stage of logical thinking.

Abstract The Diverse Elders Coalition, in partnership with its six member organizations and the Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging, completed a national survey of 840 family and friend caregivers from diverse racial, ethnic, and sexual orientation communities to understand their unique caregiving issues and challenges. Data from a subsample of 369 caregivers identifying as Hispanic/Latino, Asian, Southeast Asian or multiple ethnicities were analyzed to understand similarities and differences between caregivers born in the US and who immigrated to the US. The Stress Process Conceptual Model guided selection of characteristics used for comparative analysis. Results of logistic regression revealed that caregivers born in the US were younger (B=-.08, p<.001), had higher educational degrees (B=.42, p<.001), and higher incomes (B=.34, p=.002). They assisted care receivers with more health-related tasks (B=.27, p=.013), but fewer culture-related tasks (B=-.51, p=.002); reported higher levels of strain in their relationship with care receivers (B=.66, p=.038); and were less satisfied with the quality of care receivers’ healthcare (B=-.62, p=.042). In terms of reasons for being a caregiver, there were no significant differences in cultural commitment to caring for older family members, however those born in the US were more likely to report providing care because it was more convenient for them than for other family and friends (B=.99, p=.002). Understanding the needs of diverse caregivers has implications for healthcare and service providers, such as providing training on diverse needs. Additionally, the differences between US born and immigrant caregivers highlights implications on the dynamic between caregivers and their care receiver.

This study aims to assess the similarities and differences between Finland and Spain in terms of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) Gold large office building-type projects transitioning from version 3 (v3) to version 4 (v4). The percentages of the average scores are used here to assess the achievements of the LEED-EB data. The natural logarithm of the odds ratio lnθ and Fisher′s exact 2 × 2 tests with a mid p-value are used to evaluate dichotomous data, while the exact Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney and Cliff′s δ effect size tests are used to evaluate ordinary data. The results for LEED-EB Gold large offices demonstrate similar certification strategies in Finland and Spain. These results may be useful to LEED-EB practitioners in Finland and Spain for facilitating the selection of appropriate certification strategies in line with identified high-performance credits for large offices.

In the flood prone areas of Bangladesh, local people have adapted to flooding. Essentially, properties are protected against flooding by constructing villages in the highlands on natural levees, while using lowlands as agricultural fields during the dry season. It remains to spread flood inundation condition and exempts the necessity of strengthening measures against flooding. This study aims to clarify the status of self, community, and public assistance for flood disasters in flood prone areas of Northeast Bangladesh based on a questionnaire survey. We extracted similarities and differences between local people’s flood responses by comparing our findings to those of a similar study on a 2006 flood in the Sendai River Basin, Japan. The effects of preventive flood mitigation measures such as selection of house location are quantitatively confirmed. Maximum inundation depth and duration for houses is approximately 10% less than that for agricultural fields. The study reveals that both areas have evacuation activities, although factors motivating evacuation differ.

Bedřich Smetana made three lists of his own compositions. The first, dated 1841, presents a selection of compositions from the period of his grammar school studies in 1840–1841. The second was made in Sweden in late 1858 and early ’59, and it contains works composed in Prague and Gothenburg between 1845 and 1858. The last, most extensive list was made gradually from 1875 until 1883. The most important list is the second one, which gives a nearly complete overview of Smetana’s works from the 1840s and ’50s, and it is of particular value for the Prague period through 1856, during which the genesis and chronology of his works are less clear. The introductory part of the study characterizes all three lists and provides information about their creation. This is followed by an edition of the second list with commentary. The edition presents a complete version of the list based on the original, and in the appended commentaries, it explains and, where necessary, corrects Smetana’s information on the basis of the sources and of the discoveries of existing Smetana research.

Within the framework of the Engagement System of Appraisal Theory, this thesis investigates the heteroglossia of the reasoning of criminal judgments of Chinese mainland and Hong Kong and examines their similarities and differences in the employment of heteroglossic engagement resources and underlying causes. The reasoning of 20 criminal judgments of Chinese mainland and Hong Kong produced upon second instance for the same cause of action are collected and built as two separate corpora to carry out the study. It is found that judges of both Chinese mainland and Hong Kong employ various heteroglossic engagement resources to locate position and negotiate with other voices while proceeding with reasoning. Furthermore, they share some similarities in the selection of subtypes of engagement resources, which is attributed to the fact that they hold similar communicative purposes in the reasoning of judicial judgments; while the differences can be interpreted from the distinct legal doctrines in the mainland and Hong Kong and the textual structure of the reasoning of criminal judgments.

The CFD-DEM methodology is a popular tool for the study of fluid–particle systems, and there are several programs that permit using it. In this study, we employed it to simulate a pseudo-2D spouted bed, comparing the performance of the programs Ansys Fluent and MFiX. The results are analysed and commented on in terms of both accuracy and computational efforts. Despite the similarity of the setup, MFiX seems to perform significantly better. The similarities and differences between the two programs are discussed in detail, offering useful insights to researchers regarding the selection of one over the other, depending on the application. The better suitability of the Di Felice drag model is confirmed for the device, while it is shown that the effect of the Magnus lift force may be more limited than was shown in a previous study.
