Abstract: Semiotics, which, since its Greek origins, was associated with health, within its current ramifications has focused on the study of semiotics of culture, in general, and of theatrical semiotics, in particular, in relation to pandemics. This study examines the different plagues that have plagued humanity; as well as the diverse and eminent productions, both in the literary and theatrical fields, that they have generated. We will address the final part of the work to the study of what happened in Spain in the cultural space of the theater with the implementation of the state of alarm for COVID-19 (March-June 2020).

The article offers a cultural study of one of key aspects of the decommunization process in contemporary Ukraine, formally started by the in- troduction of so-called ‘four decommunization laws’ adopted on April 4, 2015, as manifested in the country’s cultural space through major narra- tives that describe, interpret and mythologize this process from various cultural and ideological positions and viewpoints. The methodological background for the study is provided by well-known cultural studies’ approach that, according to Paul Du Gay, Stuart Hall and others, presumes a systemic analysis of five key aspects of a given cultural phenomenon, namely, its production (creation), its consumption (reception), its regulation (by the state and other actors), its representations in culture (including narratives about it), and identities shaped or transformed by it. In this article, the penultimate part of a cultural study of Ukrainian decommunization is presented in detail. An overview of dozens of articles, columns, interviews and other texts about the decommunization in Ukrainian and foreign media demonstrates that there seem to be four main groups of decom- munization narratives, tentatively named: the ‘purification of Ukraine’ narrative, the regional (or decentralized) narrative, the ‘Bandera-ization’ narrative, and the liberal narrative, each with its characteristic modes of emplotment (from epic romance to satire), with its civilization perspective, its set of sym- bols and values, its ‘heroes’ and ‘villains’. Unsurprisingly, those portrayed as heroes in affirmative narratives (that of ‘purification’, for instance) tend to become villains in negative narratives, the head of Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance Volodymyr Viatrovych being the most prominent one.

The main question in this paper is if (and how) in Kant?s theory of sublime the object could be integrated into an emotional experience. In order to understand this problem, the ambivalent Kant?s claims will be addressed: (1) about the object as sublime and (2) that correctly understood it is not an object, but the state of the subject which is sublime. The latter thesis could be even strengthened with accompanying claim about formlessness of the object, which implies that this object can not be a part of conscious experience. Further, I will discuss Kant?s thesis about a subreption of a respect for the object instead of for the idea of humanity in our subject, as well as various interpretations of it. In the final part of the paper, I will introduce alternative interpretation which could give us a more plausible outline about the intentionality of the feeling of sublime. My claim is that Kant uses language available to him in order to state that in sublime there is no object of cognition in conscious experience. However, the object is constituted as an object of the violent emotional intentionality - sensibility brought under ideas of reason.

The final section investigates the decline of the Dutch navy in the years following the financially devastating War of the Spanish Succession, and the various attempts to reinvigorate the Dutch economy through overseas shipping. It is divided into five parts: convoys and the containment of Barbary corsairs; favouritism, innovation, and malpractice within the navy; the restructuring of the roles and responsibilities of naval officers; the role of naval seamen; and a final part concerning the aftermath of the overthrowing of the Dutch Republic in 1795 by the French Revolutionary Army. It concludes by summarising the state of the navy in 1795 - naval administration had become centralised; officers undertook institutionalised education; the fleet undertook new duties; and the advent of steamship technology was beginning to transform the navy with more vigor than ever before.

In the cultural space of the subcontinent Sufi rituals constitute an important area of research, stirring academic and non-academic inquisitiveness. And in this regard no aspect of Sufi ritualism has been more contentious than the practice of Sama (Sufi musical assemblies). Frowned upon by orders such as the Qadiris and Naqshbandis; regulated by the State in the name of Shariah (Islamic Law), Sama assemblies have been, for centuries, the defining spiritual exercise of many a leading Sufi silsila. But what constitutes the sama? How does the content(s) of such a ritual arouse spiritual sensibilities? Is there any definite structure for conducting such assemblies? These are some of the questions this paper will try to answer. While analyzing the ritual content of Sufi music the vast range of mystical poetry of both classical and south Asian Sufism needs to be taken into consideration. Indeed the music of sama is not normally conceived as apart from Sufi poetry that constitute the text. These texts create a poetic idiom, rich in image and metaphor together with a discernable degree of symbolic interpretation. What sort of an image, and of whom, do these texts portray? Who constitutes the central focus of these poetical imageries? Is there any dominant ideology working behind these textual interpretations? Such questions tend to arise, an answer to which will be sought in the course of my discussion.

This article analyzes the early stage of the Ukrainian “sixtiers” movement as a semi-autonomous space of cultural expression that was tolerated by the authorities and defined, developed, and inhabited by young Ukrainian intellectuals. In contrast to present-day Ukrainian representations of the sixtiers as a force acting in opposition to the Soviet regime, the spatial angle employed here reveals an ambiguous relationship with official institutions. The Ukrainian Komsomol organization in particular appears to be both a controlling and an enabling agent that, together with the Writers' Union, provided meeting venues for the sixtiers until the mid-1960s. This complex symbiotic relationship continued even after some creative youth pioneered the first attempts to claim public space for cultural events without the authorities' permission. The cultural terrain inhabited by young Ukrainian intellectuals was not fully separate from mainstream Soviet Ukrainian culture or in opposition to it, although their vibrant cultural space also reached into a world of non-conformist culture unregulated by the state. A series of government crackdowns beginning in the mid-1960s dramatically shrank this open, ambivalent space of semi-free cultural expression, imposing firm boundaries and forcing intellectuals to make political choices.

AbstractThe article offers an interpretive approach to understanding Jim Bulpitt'sTerritory and Power in the United Kingdom. The first two parts interpret Bulpitt's text by locating it respectively in its historical and contemporaneous contexts. It argues thatTerritory and Powerbelongs in a broader movement to rethink the state in a way that accommodates the rise of new behavioural topics.Territory and Poweralso defends modernist empiricist approaches to institutions and other mid-level topics against the positivism and general theories of behaviouralism. The final part points to an interpretive approach to the state as an alternative to the behaviouralism and institutionalism that lurk behind Bulpitt's ideas. A thoroughly interpretive approach would decentre territory and power, revealing them to be contingent and shifting products of struggles over meanings.

Much has been written about Voltaire, the great 18th century French writer and Enlightenment philosopher. His works have been pored over countless times and many analyses have been published about him and his writings. This dissertation builds on several sources so as to find the voltairian critiques of the French monarchy in relation to his Traité sur la tolérance.  The author starts by detailing the French monarchical system of the time as well as defining what tolerance was under this system. The first part ends with an explanation of what Voltaire thought the monarchy should be as well as defining what tolerance was according to him. The second part of the text discusses the specific critiques Voltaire aimed at the French monarchy, be it the malfunctioning justice system or the arbitrary powers possessed by the king. The final part of this exposition examines the place of religion in the French state. In this third and final section, the author looks at what Voltaire thought religion was and should be as well as the relationship between religion and the state.
