Tahāra, the Islamic regulations of purity are discussed as they appear in the Islamic scriptures, and as they are practised in Morocco during visits to the public baths, hammām. The formal and local traditions are not considered as opposites, but they are demonstrated to be interacting in a common logic. It is pointed out that impurity is mainly connected to activities necessary for the reproduction of the human body. Consequently, it is proposed that the ablution and the visit to hammām are ways to transcend the earthly condition and prepare for a connection to God. Furthermore, it is suggested that Tahāra, as a system of meaning, can function as an approach to the analysis of other Islamic rituals, for example the fast of Ramadan.

In 2008 the change of sex of a Finnish transgender pastor attracted media attention to Lutheran Christianity on a worldwide scale, which compared to other religious traditions seldom makes it to the world news. This article discusses the sex reassignment undergone by Marja-Sisko Aalto, a Lutheran pastor from the town of Imatra, in south eastern Finland, who in 2008, at the age of 54, was transformed into a woman. First some remarks on the relation between religion and the body are made and terminological issues are discussed briefly. The second part of the article presents Aalto's life story based on the author's interview with her in April 2010. In the last section the author discusses the Finnish cognitive scholar Ilkka Pyysiäinen’s reflection on folk biology as an explanation for making sense of the public image regarding a priest’s gender. The article concludes by looking at Marja-Sisko Aalto’s case from the perspective of marking boundaries between the categories of the self, the society and the human body.

The Public Baths in the Roman town of Viroconium, the tribal centre of the Cornovii, have long attracted the attention of the antiquary through the miraculous preservation above ground of a length of walling. This is in fact one of the only three substantial portions of walls of Roman civil buildings in Britain which have survived the stone robbers of medieval and later times. The other two, the Mint Wall at Lincoln and the Jewry Wall at Leicester must owe their survival to being incorporated in later buildings in the middle of a medieval town. But at Wroxeter ‘The Old Work’, as it has been called since Camden's time, stands today as it has stood for centuries in the midst of cornfields. Why this wall should have stood while others were demolished and even their foundations grubbed out must remain a problem. It was clearly a place to begin excavations and Thomas Wright records that ‘on the 3rd February 1859 a pit was sunk against the northern side of the ‘Old Wall’. His excavation developed to the north and revealed the long basilican hall which can now be recognized as the palaestra of the Baths, although at the time this was not fully understood. Indeed after further work by G. E. Fox and W. H. St. John Hope in 1896 and 1899, summarized by F. Haverfield, the identification of this as the Basilica or lawcourts of the town persisted.

CT scan is widely used to diagnose the inside of the human body, so supervision is needed to ensure the health and safety of workers, patients and the public. One surveillance that can be done is to analyze the radiation dose of the patient on CT scan with the application of Si-INTAN. Data processing of the results of CT scan of the head, thorax and abdomen for ages 0-4 years, 5-14 years and ? 15 years using the Si-INTAN application. From the results of the data processing, the highest DRL DLP value and CTDIVOL values were obtained, for CT scan heads were 1732,8 mGycm and 31,92 mGy, the CT scan of the thorax was 2450,78 mGycm and 19,36 mGy, and for CT Abdominal Scans were 3968,85 mGycm and 19,35 mGy.

Relations that exist between the Qur'an and local traditions of society cause variations in the exegesis writing tradition. One of the reasons why there are variations is to make it easier for the public to understand the contents of the Qur'an. This is as happened in Javanese society, with the tradition of using the pégon script in exegesis writing. The pégon script is generally used by the Javanese as a medium for scientific transmission. Pegon script and pesantren is like the two sides of the coin that cannot be mutually separated. History shows, pégon becomes an important part in pesantren world civilization because the learning and intellectual works of pesantren are very dominant with the pégon tradition. This study uses a phenomenological approach as an effort to explain the phenomenon of the writing of the pégon in pesantren exegesis. This study concludes that the use of the pégon script in the writing of pesantren works such as Tafsir Al-Ibrīz fī Ma'ānī al-Qur'ān al-`Azīz by KH Bisri Mustafa, Al-Iklīl fī Ma`ānī al-Tanzīl by KH Misbah Mustafa Mustafa and Tafsir Al-Maḥallī by KH Mudjab Mahalli is not just a communication tool to convey the writer's message to the reader, however, more than that, it has educational functions in many ways. This can be seen in the use of the pégon script with the Gandul translation model. The use of the meaning of gandhul in the exegesis using pégon becomes a kind of Arabic-Javanese dictionary because the translation process uses the word for word model, so this makes it easier for Javanese people to understand the contents of the Qur'an. Besides that, the use of the pégon script in Javanese pesantren exegesis writing also functions as a medium for learning nahwu or Arabic grammatical system and also as a cultural identity of Javanese society.

Activities undertaken by the Polish–Egyptian Conservation Mission to Marina el-Alamein in 2016 included research and conservation in the public district of the ancient town as well as in private houses. Work focused foremost on research, conservation and exhibition of monuments in the central town square, especially the remains of a peristyle adjacent from the east, and the southern portico of the square itself. Research and conservation continued also in the area north of the central square, concentrating on the remains of public baths dating from the Hellenistic period and, on the south, on the remnants of Roman baths in use from the 2nd to the 3rd century AD. Maintenance conservation was carried out in private houses, in both baths complexes and in the eastern and southern area of the central square.

The article deals with the local aspect of privacy, embodied in a human dwelling. The aim of the research is to philosophically analyze the local aspect of privacy, to identify its essential characteristics. The study is based on an integrated approach that includes logical, hermeneutic-interpretive and comparative methods. The novelty of the work lies in the conceptualization of the socio-philosophical phenomenon of local privacy. The presence of a private space closed from the eyes of the public gives an individual a sense of security and peace. In many cultures, the house is endowed with special symbolism, being a reflection of a human body, an expanded image of “Self”. A home designed according to one’s own taste, in which loved ones live and personal belongings that evoke images and memories are stored, provides an identity, a state of stability and rootedness. Staying in a private space provides an opportunity to take a break from social roles, from the need for constant self-presentation in public. The right to private property, protected by laws and social norms, guarantees the autonomy of the subject. On the contrary, unlawful entry into a home is an attack on human freedom and dignity. A private space, localized in one’s own room, apartment or house, is a person’s existential need.

Cellular mobile communication technology has grown exponentially in the last decade resulting in large number of base stations in areas at which people are living or working. All over the world, the electromagnetic pollution produced from cellular base stations erected in residential areas and its effect on the environment and human body is a problem that has been concerning the society for many years. This paper, introduces the effects of electromagnetic energy emitted cellular base stations on the biological systems of the human body. The induced electromagnetic fields (EMF), and specific absorption rate (SAR) were calculated in close proximity to cellular mobile base stations. The calculated values of SAR were compared with the most commonly used international limits. The results show that the electromagnetic radiation (EMR) exposure levels at a distance of several meters from the base station towers can cause hazardous effects to the public.
