During the 1992-1993 and 1994-1995 winter storage period for potatoes (Solarium tuberosum) in Quebec, New Brunswick, and Prince-Edward-Island, tubers were collected which had symptoms of fusarium tuber rot and silver scurf and which had been treated commercially after harvest with thiabendazole. Resistance to thiabendazole was detected in isolates of Fusarium sambucinum and Helminthosporium solani but not in isolates of F. avenaceum and F. oxysporum. However, the majority of those farms surveyed (64%) had adequate disease control with no pathogen isolated from the diseased tubers. Incidence and EC50 values of resistant isolates were lower than found elsewhere and the occurrence of farms with resistant isolates of F. sambucinum (18%) was greater than for H. solani (7%). For H. solani, EC50 values of resistant isolates were substantially less than those found in Alberta. While the study investigated commercial operations employing a wide range of thiabendazole rates (6-42 g a.i. t-1), no specifie trends were detected between the occurrence of resistant isolates and cultivar or thiabendazole application rate.

A new potato tuber disease has been observed in the Tulelake region, California, USA, since 1995, with tuber symptoms suggestive of silver scurf disease (Helminthosporium solani). In this work we isolated, identified and demonstrated the nature of the causal agent of this potato disease in California. In addition, the distribution of H. solani in potato fields and the inoculum potential at harvest time were investigated. Disease progress and H. solani spore populations were also characterised under commercial storage conditions. The main fungal genera associated with potato tubers in storage were Helminthosporium solani, Colletotrichum sp., Fusarium sp., and Rhizoctonia sp. The results of Koch's postulates indicated that H. solani is responsible for the outbreak of silver scurf in the Tulelake region. In a disease survey in three commercial potato fields naturally infested, H. solani infections occurred in all fields. However, the extension of the infections differed significantly between the fields. During potato storage, silver scurf usually increased over time. The percentage of the tuber surface covered by silver scurf varied from 3.5% up to 35.5% during the storage period. The number of H. solani lesions per tuber also progressively increased from 6% up to 35%, six months after storage. H. solani spore populations also increased over time in all studied potato stores; nevertheless, they followed no consistent pattern, exhibiting multiple and variable peaks of increase and reduction during the period of storage.

Fusarium dry rot is a significant postharvest disease of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) and is often controlled by applying thiabendazole to tubers prior to storage. However, thiabendazole-resistant isolates of Fusarium spp. have been reported from Europe (2), the United States (1), and Canada (1,4). To address concerns, samples of potato tubers showing symptoms of dry rot caused by Fusariumspp. were collected from three storage bays in a commercial storage facility in Nova Scotia, Canada, in February 2001. All tubers had been treated with thiabendazole after harvest and prior to storage. Tubers were cut longitudinally, and small tissue samples (10 × 5 × 3 mm) were taken from the margins of internal necrotic regions with a sterile scalpel, surface-sterilized in 0.6% sodium hypochlorite for 15 s, rinsed twice in sterile distilled water (SDW), and blotted dry on sterile filter paper. Tissue pieces were plated on 0.5-strength potato dextrose agar (PDA) amended with tetracycline (0.05 g/liter) and streptomycin sulfate (0.1 g/liter). Petri dishes were incubated in the dark at 22°C for 4 to 7 days. After incubation, hyphal tips from the margins of actively growing isolates were removed with a sterile probe and plated on 0.5-strength PDA to generate pure cultures. Of 35 potato tubers examined, 10 (29%) yielded Fusarium isolates for further study. All 10 isolates were identified as F. sambucinum Fuckel according to Nelson et al. (3). Agar plugs (5 mm diameter) taken from the margins of 7- to 10-day-old cultures of F. sambucinum isolates were transferred to petri dishes containing 0.5-strength PDA amended with thiabendazole at 0, 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, or 100 mg/liter. Thiabendazole was prepared as a stock solution in SDW and added to molten agar after autoclaving. Cultures were grown in the dark for 7 days at 22°C, after which mycelial growth diameter was measured using digital calipers. Two measurements, along orthogonal diameters, were taken from each of three replicate plates for a total of six measurements per thiabendazole concentration. Means were calculated, and the diameter of the inoculation plug was subtracted from each mean. Calculated EC50 values (thiabendazole concentration inhibiting pathogen growth by 50%) were obtained by regression of the log of the chemical concentration against the corresponding probit of percent fungal inhibition. All isolates of F. sambucinum were resistant to thiabendazole, with EC50 values ranging from 7 to 82 mg/liter. Six isolates had EC50 values between 40 and 82 mg/liter. Control isolates of F. sambucinum, F. avenaceum, F. solani, and F. oxysporum were sensitive to thiabendazole, with EC50 values of <1 mg/liter. Although isolates of F. sambucinum resistant to thiabendazole have been recovered from eastern Canada (1,4), this is the first report of thiabendazole resistance in F. sambucinum isolates from tubers in commercial storage in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia, Canada, a production region that concentrates on growing processing potatoes for the potato chip industry and is several hundred kilometers from other potato-growing regions of Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. AbstractDeposition of perovskite films by antisolvent engineering is a highly common method employed in perovskite photovoltaics research. Herein, we report on a general method that allows for the fabrication of highly efficient perovskite solar cells by any antisolvent via manipulation of the antisolvent application rate. Through detailed structural, compositional, and microstructural characterization of perovskite layers fabricated by 14 different antisolvents, we identify two key factors that influence the quality of the perovskite layer: the solubility of the organic precursors in the antisolvent and its miscibility with the host solvent(s) of the perovskite precursor solution, which combine to produce rate-dependent behavior during the antisolvent application step. Leveraging this, we produce devices with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) that exceed 21% using a wide range of antisolvents. Moreover, we demonstrate that employing the optimal antisolvent application procedure allows for highly efficient solar cells to be fabricated from a broad range of precursor stoichiometries.

Climate models project that by 2100, the northeastern US and eastern Canada will warm by approximately 3–5 °C, with increased winter precipitation. These changes will affect trees directly and also indirectly through effects on “nuisance” species, such as insect pests, pathogens, and invasive plants. We review how basic ecological principles can be used to predict nuisance species’ responses to climate change and how this is likely to impact northeastern forests. We then examine in detail the potential responses of two pest species (hemlock woolly adelgid ( Adelges tsugae Annand) and forest tent caterpillar ( Malacosoma disstria Hubner)), two pathogens (armillaria root rot ( Armillaria spp.) and beech bark disease ( Cryptococcus fagisuga Lind. + Neonectria spp.)), and two invasive plant species (glossy buckthorn ( Frangula alnus Mill.) and oriental bittersweet ( Celastrus orbiculatus Thunb.)). Several of these species are likely to have stronger or more widespread effects on forest composition and structure under the projected climate. However, uncertainty pervades our predictions because we lack adequate data on the species and because some species depend on complex, incompletely understood, unstable relationships. While targeted research will increase our confidence in making predictions, some uncertainty will always persist. Therefore, we encourage policies that allow for this uncertainty by considering a wide range of possible scenarios.

Studies were made of total field aeromagnetic data over an area covering a section of the Appalachian belt in eastern Canada. This area is bounded by latitudes 45 °N and 47°40′ N and longitudes 62°30′ W and 67 °W. The residual magnetic values were filtered analytically in order to accentuate the effects of regional tectonic trends in the area. The second vertical derivative values were evaluated for outlining the contacts of magnetized geological formations with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Results of the analysis of the Bouguer anomaly map for the area seemed to correspond well with the tectonic trends indicated by the aeromagnetic data. Sixty-five anomalies were chosen from the residual and filtered maps to determine the following parameters of the causative bodies: (1) intensity of polarization; (2) direction-cosines of the polarization vector; and (3) depths to the top and bottom of the bodies.The picture of the pre-Carboniferous basement, as inferred from aeromagnetic data, is that of a valley and ridge configuration characterized by a series of subparallel, elongated basement blocks with relative vertical displacements. The basement blocks are bounded by major fault systems, known or inferred, mostly of pre-Carboniferous age. These blocks are aligned mostly in the direction of major tectonic trend in the area. The details of subsurface Basement topography are discussed on the basis of the results of interpretation of aeromagnetic data. Most interesting of all is a belt of high magnetic intensity running roughly in a NW–SE direction over the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Prince Edward Island. It has been suggested that this belt is caused by a pre-Taconic topographic high, or alternatively, by a pre-Carboniferous basement high bounded by fault zones subparallel with the fault system under the Cabot Strait.

Cadmium (Cd) accumulation in tubers by commercial potato cultivars was assessed at 12 sites around Australia having differing soil and environmental conditions. At all but two sites there were significant differences in tuber Cd concentrations between cultivars. Some major commercial cultivars had tuber Cd concentrations only half that of others. Advanced breeding lines showed further potential to reduce Cd accumulation. Mean tuber Cd concentrations of the 14 most common cultivars, averaged across all sites, ranged from 30 to 50 8g kg-1 fresh weight (FW), below the maximum permitted concentration (MPC) of 50 8g kg-1 of Cd (FW). However, at some sites certain cultivars exceeded the MPC. A modified joint regression analysis of the data indicated that no cultivars have consistently low or consistently high tuber Cd concentrations across a range of environments. While differences between cultivars were significant, the range in Cd concentrations found between sites was generally greater than the range in Cd concentrations between cultivars at any one site. Thus soil and other site factors (e.g. irrigation water quality, climate, etc.) play a dominant role in controlling Cd accumulation by current commercial cultivars and there is a need to breed new cultivars resistant to Cd accumulation under a wide range of environments.

Twenty two fertilizer experiments with wheat were carried out over a wide range of soil and environmental seasonal conditions in southern N.S. W. The effects of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers on the yield and composition of wheat are described. Seasonal environmental effects were examined by comparing the relative response to fertilizers of vegetative growth in the early spring with the final response of the harvested grain. Grain yield response to fertilizers is commonly restricted by seasonal conditions. Overcorrection of the phosphorus or nitrogen deficiencies may cause excessive early vegetative growth which exhausts soil moisture reserves before grain development has been completed. Loss of grain yields through this phenomenon is described locally as haying off. The chief danger in this respect seems to be from excessive nitrogen levels in the soil following a clover pasture. Assessments of economically desirable fertilizer applications on the basis of field experiments can only be based on statistical averages of seasonal conditions in each locality. The trials indicate, however, that the common application rate of superphosphate to wheat is inadequate in this region and should be at least doubled.

Fusarium species are among the most important fungal pathogens of maize, where they cause severe reduction of yield and accumulation of a wide range of harmful mycotoxins in the kernels. In order to identify the Fusarium species and their mycotoxin profiles associated to maize ear rot and kernel contamination in Iran, a wide sampling was carried out from field in ten major maize-producing provinces in Iran, during 2015 and 2016. From 182 samples of maize kernels, 551 strains were isolated and identified as belonging to Fusarium genus. Among the 234 representative strains identified at species level by translation elongation factor (EF-1α) sequences, the main Fusarium species were F. verticillioides and F. proliferatum, together representing 90% of the Iranian Fusarium population, and, to a lesser extent, F. incarnatum equiseti species complex (FIESC), F. thapsinum and F. redolens. Fumonisin (FBs) production by F. verticillioides and F. proliferatum representative strains was analysed, showing that all strains produced FB1. None of F. verticillioides strains produced FB2 nor FB3, while both FB2 and FB3 were produced only by F. proliferatum. Total mean of FBs production by F. verticillioides was higher than F. proliferatum. The occurrence of different Fusarium species on Iranian maize is reason of great concern because of the toxigenic risk associated to these species. Moreover, the diversity of the species identified increases the toxigenic risk associated to Fusarium contaminated maize kernels, because of the high possibility that a multi-toxin contamination can occur with harmful consequences on human and animal health.
