Beach erosion is one of the serious problem in Japan. As a countermeasure against beach erosion, many preventive works, such as sea walls and groins, have been constructed during the past 20 or more years. However, as the result of field investigations, it has become clear that sea walls and groins are not always effective on beach erosion prevention, and inversely, in some cases, they accelerate the beach erosion. Based on the above cognition, the author has proposed and tried to apply the detached breakwater system as a measure against beach erosion for the last 8 years. This is for the purpose of developing the sand deposition behind the breakwater. Therefore several experimental works of the detached breakwater system were carried out under the guidance of the present author, and most of these tests were successful. The design method of this system was composed by the author on the basis of the result of field investigations, which have been conducted for more than 8 years. The numerous construction works of detached breakwaters have been carried out in accordance with the design method proposed in this paper, and the effectiveness of detached breakwaters has been proved on the several coasts in Japan where severe beach erosion occurs.

A design method of one cultural product based on the meme of artifacts was constructed and applied to the development and design of cultural products. Firstly, the paper puts forward that the outer “tangible” level of the “spatial perspective” of culture corresponds to the dominant meme, as well as the mid “behavioral” level and Inner “intangible” level correspond to the hidden meme according to the theories of meme and the “spatial perspective” of culture. What’s more, the meme was extracted according to the appearance of Liao dynasty ceramics and related research literature. Secondly, based on the extracted meme of Liao dynasty ceramics, the design method of cultural products was constructed by applying the theoretical framework two orders of the signification of Roland Barthes Semiotics to explore the extended cultural meaning of meme and apply its translation to the design of cultural products. The design method of cultural products constructed by this Institute is more inclusive of the intrinsic level of artifacts than that in the past, which only created cultural products that focus on the physical representation of the visual elements. It is an attempt to provide designers of cultural products and students with design background with a design method of cultural products for reference.

AbstractThe Weihe River in central China is the largest tributary of the Yellow River and contains a well-developed strath terrace system. A new chronology for the past 1.11 Ma for a spectacular flight of strath terraces along the upper Weihe River near Longxi is defined based on field investigations of loess—paleosol sequences and magnetostratigraphy. All the strath terraces are strikingly similar, having several meters of paleosols that have developed directly on top of fluvial deposits located on the terrace treads. This suggests that the abandonment of each strath terrace by river incision occurred during the transition from glacial to interglacial climates. The average fluvial incision rates during 1.11—0.71 Ma and since 0.13 Ma are 0.35 and 0.32 m/ka, respectively. These incision rates are considerably higher than the average incision rate of 0.16 m/km for the intervening period between 0.71 and 0.13 Ma. Over all our results suggest that cyclic Quaternary climate change has been the main driving factor for strath terrace formation with enhanced episodic uplift.

AbstractRemote-sensing and GIS techniques in conjunction with field investigations show how glacier mass loss has led to the rapid growth of Linggo Co, a glacier-fed lake on the central Tibetan Plateau, which has expanded by 21.3% in area between 1974 and 2010, with a lake-level rise of ˜11.2m. The lake volume of Linggo Co increased at a rate of 0.02 × 106, 42.67 × 106 and 65.8 × I06m3a-1 during the periods 1974-92, 1992-99 and 1999-2010, respectively. Other nonglacier-fed lakes in the vicinity (i.e. Longwei Co, Amur Co and Darngo Co Ngion) shrank considerably from the early 1970s to 1992 and then expanded from 1992 to 2010. Despite being in the same climate region, Linggo Co and the non-glacier-fed lakes have differed in response to climate change. The glaciers in the catchment of Linggo Co retreated by 2.4% in area between 1974 and 2007, and their mean thickness decreased by 6.19 ± 1.91 m between 1974 and 2000, with an associated glacier meltwater runoff of (7.52 ± 2.32) × 108 m3. The results indicate that glacier mass loss had a significant impact on the growth of Linggo Co over the past 40 years.

Most studies in the past on the control of biped locomotion considered only level surfaces. However, in the real world the ground is rarely completely flat. More research on locomotion on less structured surfaces is needed. In this study, we investigated a control design method that searches for suitable control and trajectory parameters using a Genetic Algorithm (GA). Many sets of parameters are generated through the search and the best set is selected based on a robustness measure developed from the linearized Poincaré map. This technique reduces tedious analysis and is favorably applicable to the design for locomotion on unstructured surfaces, for which analytical approaches are less appropriate. Simulations have been performed. Control parameters for different slopes were obtained and stored in a database. During the control, the control parameters suitable for the current surface slope were retrieved and the trajectory for a level surface was modified according to the surface slope. The control parameters changed values according to the terrain. Simulation results were promising.

Cherangani hills, located in Western Kenya, comprises of 12 forest blocks, maintaining great plant diversity. However, little attention to plant diversity studies has been paid to it in the past years. Here, we present a checklist of the vascular plants of this region obtained through intensive field investigations and matching of herbarium specimens. In total, 1296 species, including 17 endemic species are documented, belonging to 130 families and 608 genera. This flora represents 18.50%, 43.83% and 54.17% of the Kenyan species, genera and families, respectively. The habit, habitat and voucher specimens, as well as brief notes on the distribution of each taxon recorded are presented in this checklist. It is the first exhaustive inventory of the terrestrial vascular plants in Cherangani hills which is a significant regional centre for plant diversity.

It is well-known that lesbians, trans and queer women face considerable discrimination, exclusion, stigmatization, and abuse in India. That is over and above the misogyny and discrimination faced by women in the patriarchal country. LGBTQIA people were also criminalized by law till recently. In spite of all the oppression and discrimination, lesbians and trans women have always existed in the country. A number of small sample studies with limited focus have been conducted by academic bodies, NGOs, and few state transgender boards over the past few years. Some of these studies provide direct or indirect insight into the quality of life of older trans women and lesbians (QOLO). In this research, these studies are reviewed in detail from a QOLO perspective, and a number of critical conclusions are arrived at by the present author. Further, an enhanced version of QOL (and QOLO) for lesbians is also proposed by her. It is hoped that this research would be useful for motivating interdisciplinary work in a relatively neglected area.

Te Whanganui a Tara Wellington City has a long history dating back to legendary individuals, including Maui and Kupe. The harbour is dotted with sites associated with a history that has accumulated over several centuries. Colonial settlement concealed many of these pre-European sites with what is now Wellington City. Today many of these buildings that constitute Te Whanganui a Tara Wellington are considered heritage fabric or relics of the past. This thesis aims to examine and define such a context of a site’s past that is both concealed and concealing. The research breaks the past of the harbour down into two periods; Te Ao Tawhito (the old world) and Te Ao Hou (the new world), allowing for a segregated study of pre-European and post-European history. Many of these relics evoke, express or give insight into the past of Te Ao Hou. At times this history seems privileged due to the existence of relics. While methods such as preservation or restoration are valuable tools for a relic based design project, they do not address the matter of concealment. Two issues arise: Firstly, how could an intervention such as a mnemonic device express, evoke or give insight into the past that for numerous reasons are not presently interpretable at a site? Secondly, how could such an intervention interact with a relic that now remains on a site, as a valued vestige of the past? Part one of the thesis consists of project one, which is a design for a Japanese bath-house on Seatoun Ridge in Motu-Kairangi Miramar. This design attempts to evoke, express and give insight into an era of the past from Te Ao Tawhito. This period is not presently apparent or evoked at the site although the era of concern is well known and important. The purpose of this project is to explore analogy as a design method, which through referencing the past, allows a new building to act as a mnemonic device expressing, evoking or giving insight into Te Ao Tawhito. Part two follows with a second project consisting of three designs for an aquarium that explore how a mnemonic intervention could exist on a site that hosts a relic. Point Gordon on the northern tip of the peninsula was once a pa during Te Ao Tawhito and a military base during Te Ao Hou. This site is well suited for the second project because a relic of the latter period remains, subsequently concealing the ancient site of the former period. This project explores a metamorphic design method that allows a site to be developed while considering the following values of a relic: its original intent, its age value or its historic meaning. The metamorphic approach used in the second project juxtaposes, weaves or wraps a mnemonic intervention into the site, allowing the relic to be valued for either of the above qualities, which it may possess. The two projects have resulted in two design methods that could guide further design projects acknowledging a site’s layered histories whether interpretable or not. The thesis discusses three issues that are important to this research. Firstly, the past is considered as an important aspect of a communities culture, identity and well-being. Secondly, relics and mnemonic interventions are discussed as having equal value and special attention should not lay with relics. Lastly, the research reflects on how questions can be more valuable than terminology.
