This paper reports the generation of an extra phase and the accompanying temporal effects in an asymmetric optically compensated in-pane-switching (IPS) liquid crystal (LC) system and a fringe-field-switching (FFS) liquid crystal display (LCD) exhibiting a twofold faster response speed in the switching-off process compared with that in single and symmetric IPS-LCDs and FFS LCDs for the first time. To explain the experimental results, we derived an approximate analytical formula for the optical output intensity that includes an extra phase advancement and conducted simulations to achieve normally black operation using a dynamic optical retarder.

The mechanisms responsible for terahertz stimulated radiation under resonant intracenter excitation of shallow donors in bulk germanium are considered to be the inversion laser mechanism (ILM) and electron stimulated Raman scattering (e-SRS). The e-SRS cross-section was estimated in the case of resonant excitation of odd levels of a shallow arsenic donor in germanium. The output intensity under resonant excitation of germanium doped with arsenic is calculated. It is shown that at an intensity exceeding the threshold for e-SRS, there should be a competition of mechanisms leading to a decrease in the intensity of ILM, which can be detected by the dependence of the output intensity on time.

An experimental study of few filaments interaction impact on the terahertz radiation pattern has demonstrated that interaction of two close propagating beams leads to formation of a superfilament-like structure with on-axis terahertz yield. Mutual delay between two beamlets tilts the output intensity front of THz emission.

A leakage detecting sensor (radiation mode (or) double fiber mode) is proposed to monitor the light rays propagates from the surface of the modified clad region (SnO2 ) of the optical fiber. The output intensity increases and decreases for the varying gas concentration (0-500 ppm) with the presence of different gases (methanol, ethanol, acetone and ammonia) at room temperature. The received output intensity from the clad modified surface increases for ammonia and methanol, whereas, it decreases for acetone and ethanol gases for the increase in the gas concentration. However, in the transmitting mode (single fiber mode) the output light intensity decreases for all the gases with varying gas concentration. The output gas sensitivity of the proposed sensor (double fiber mode) is compared with the transmitting mode sensor and the sensor shows superior response for methanol over other gases. The dynamic characteristics of the sensor are reported.

We demonstrate the beyond extreme ultraviolet (BEUV) emission by a laser-triggered discharge source with the laser-current delay between 0.6 µs and 3 µs. The spectra at different electron temperatures are simulated theoretically, and the spectra at different laser-current delays are measured experimentally. The theoretical and experimental results show that the lower vapor velocity at longer laser-current delay time is beneficial for increasing the steady-state time of plasma at high temperature, thereby increasing the output intensity and spectral purity of 6.76 nm. The radiation intensity of 6.76 nm (0.6% bandwidth) increases about 240% when the delay increases from 0.6 to 3 μs.

Superradiant emission occurs when ultra-relativistic electron bunches are compressed to a duration shorter than the wavelength of the light emitted by them. In this case the different electron contributions to the emitted field sum up in phase and the output intensity scales as the square of the number of electrons in the bunch. In this work the particular case of superradiant emission from an undulator in the THz frequency range is considered. An electron bunch at the entrance of a THz undulator setup has typically an energy chirp because of the necessity to compress it in magnetic chicanes. Then, the chirped electron bunch evolves passing through a highly dispersive THz undulator with a large magnetic field amplitude, and the shape of its longitudinal phase space changes. Here the impact of this evolution on the emission of superradiant THz radiation is studied, both by means of an analytical model and by simulations.

Being able to forecast events is of great importance in many fields, from brain behavior to earthquakes or stock markets. Because each dynamical system has intrinsic features, different statistical tools have to be used for each system. Here we study the time series of the output intensity of a fiber laser with an ordinal patterns analysis, and we look for temporal correlations in order to statistically forecast the most intense events. We set two thresholds, a low one and a high one, to distinguish between low intensity versus high intensity events. We find that when the time series is performing events below the low threshold it shows some preferred temporal patterns before performing events above a high threshold.
