Abstract Plants have a vital role in constructed wetlands because they provide oxygen in removing pollutants, as a medium of microorganisms, as absorbers of nutrients and other pollutants, must be resistant to high levels of pollutant loads and stressful conditions. Several plants have potential for constructed wetland, namely Phragmites sp., Typha sp., Canna indica, Colocasia esculenta, Eichornia crassipes, Eleocharis dulcis, and others. Eleocharis dulcis is a local plant commonly found in South Kalimantan. Eleocharis dulcis in the local, namely Purun tikus, grows in tidal swamps and grows in areas of high soil acidity (pH 2.5 – 3.5). Eleocharis dulcis can be used in tackling reclamation waste of acid sulfate soil which can absorb 1.45% of N elements; Cu 15 ppm; P 0.08%; Zn 48 ppm; Mg 0.16%; Fe 1.386 ppm; S 0.18%; Mn 923 ppm; K 2.05%; and Ca 0.22%. According to several studies that have been carried out, Eleocharis dulcis have been shown to reduce several pollutant loads such as Hg 99.84%; Pb; Cd; Fe 85.68%; SO4; Mn 78.94%; BOD 98.74%; COD 98.73%; and turbidity 80% also. The local plant Eleocharis dulcis can be potentially used as wastewater treatment, especially in a constructed wetland systems.

Abstract Tidal swamps which are widespread in lowland areas have the potential to be used for agricultural activities. The amount of rain potential available in this type of land can be used to supply water for irrigation purposes so that plants grow optimally. However, the tidal potential especially on the peat swamps area may have a negative impact, namely the occurrence of nutrient leaching from the soil, which is harmful to plants. Rasau Jaya, a tidal lowland area with peat swamp soil characteristic, is an area allocated for rice and corn cultivation. The study was conducted with the aim to determine the physical potential and constraints of land and water management in Rasau Jaya for the cultivation of both types of plants. This research was conducted through field observations and measurements as well as laboratory tests and model scale to evaluate the characteristics of existing land quality based on Land Suitability Classification by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The result of this study shows that characteristics of water availability in Rasau Jaya is classified as Class S1 Highly Suitable for rice and corn crops, while existing conditions of land in Rasau Jaya III are generally classified in the S2 class Moderately Suitable for rice and corn crops. Appropriate land management is needed to increase land productivity for the cultivation of the Rasau Jaya’s assigned priority crops.

Water functions are very diverse for humans for daily needs such as drinking water, bathing, agriculture, development, aesthetics, and lower temperatures. Palembang is a lowland area dominated by wetlands, tidal swamps, and rivers. The types of houses on stilts on the banks of the Musi river are limas, Gudang, and Chinese stilt houses which are always associated with the water environment. The construction of roads replacing the role of rivers has realized people that the water environment has an important meaning for the house on stilts. The research objective was to explore the meaning of the water environment from various aspects for residents, stilt houses, and their environment. This research method is a case study with data collection through interviews, observation, measurements, and taking photos. Data and findings were analyzed and juxtaposed with images in the field. The road construction has eliminated part of the function of the river and influenced the change in orientation of the house on stilts. In conclusion, respect for the water environment including rivers has decreased, causing the quality of the river to decline, and the house on stilts cannot take advantage of the existence of the water environment optimally

Tidal lowland is one of the potential lands for agriculture that is found very widely in coastal areas of South Sumatra. There are about 400,000 hectares (ha) was reclaimed for agriculture purpose. However, in many parts, the rice production is still low (<3 ton/ha), mainly in the high part of hydrotopography class (Type C) that the tidewater could not possibly irrigate the land.  This study aimed to evaluate the level of actual and potential suitability of tidal swamps for rice plants. This research has been carried out in Bandar Jaya Village, Air Sugihan Subdistrict, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency. This research used a survey level method with very detailed (intensive) with a scale of 1:6,000 covering a research area of 16 ha. The results showed that actual suitability for rice plants in the study site is N-n with an area of 5 ha and N-f, n with an area of 11 ha with limiting factors of soil pH and P nutrient. The potential land suitability class for rice plants in the study location is S3-n with an area of 5 ha and S3-f, n with an area of 11 ha. Land quality improvement was done by using the lime application and control water table at a depth of at least 10 cm from the soil surface during rice growth.  Rainwater should be retained in the tertiary block as much as possible to fulfill crop water requirements. Setting the planting time (November-January) and balanced fertilization will be able to increase the land suitability class to S1 (highly suitable).

<p class="JSDLKatakunci"><strong>Abstra</strong><strong>ct</strong><strong>.</strong> The purpose of this paper is to synthesize all research results qualitatively to explore the potential of biochar as a remediation agent in swamps, including its mechanism, and effectiveness. The soil in swampland is characterized by the presence of pyrite (FeS2) which results in high acidity (soil pH &lt;3.5). The reduction process in swamps produces high amounts of ferrous iron (Fe2+) which is then released into the environment. The mechanism of iron (Fe) poisoning is indicated by the inhibition of nutrient uptake because the roots are covered with iron. This disturbes the root function as a nutrient absorber. Recent research shows that biochar could be used as an approach to reduce soil pollution in swamps through metal immobilization processes. This review paper uses a qualitative method with meta-aggregation approach based on the Francis-Baldesari method (2006). Principally, the soil remediation mechanism using biochar does not remove metals but accumulate them into hydroxide or carbonate deposits with the help of existing microorganisms. Provision of rice husk Biochar can increase the pH value reaching ≥5.0 and grain yield by 20% in intensively cultivated tidal swamps. Increasing the pH value of the soil will supports the formation of Fe hydroxide deposits which are accumulated on rice roots.</p><p class="JSDLKatakunci"> </p><p><strong>Abstrak.

Tidal swamp land is one type of wetland in South Kalimantan, where the water level is influenced by the season/rainfall. Based on the puddle level and duration, tidal swamp land has three typologies, namely shallow tidal swamp, middle tidal swamp, and deep tidal swamp. The wetlands in Ampukung village are classified in tidal swamps.  Most of the tidal swamps have been utilized for agricultural activities, especially rice. Till now, rice farming in the tidal swamps of Ampukung village has not experienced any significant problems. In 2016, the rice harvest in Ampukung village exceeded the target of South Kalimantan. This success is considered to be increased by planting twice a year. However, some issues need to be addressed regarding the characteristics of the land in Ampukung village. Soil fertility, especially soil acidity, is one of the limiting factors in the utilization of tidal swamp land. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the acidity of the soil in the tidal swamp of Ampukung village. The acidity data is basic information to determine the condition of soil fertility to achieve the target of planting rice twice a year. This information will be presented in the form of a map to assist users in interpreting the research data. This study found that the soil pH in the tidal swamp lands of Ampukung Village, which was planted with rice, was highly acidic and homogeneously distributed.

Assessment adaptation of several new superior rice varieties  on new rice fields affected by seawater intrusion was carried out in Tungkal Ilir Subdistrict, West Tanjung Jabung District, from April to October 2018. The study applied randomized block designs (RBD) with four replications. The treatments consisted of four new rice high yielding varities suitable for tidal/swamps areas namely Inpara 3, Inpara 8, Inpara 9, and Inpari 34 Salin Agritan, and one local rice variety (Londo) as control. Three stems seedlings per clump were planted at the age of 21-25 days, using a 4:1 Legowo planting system. Fertilizer application consisted of basic fertilizer (1.0 Mg ha-1 of lime, 2.5 Mg ha-1 of manure, and 75 kg ha-1 of urea) and supplementary fertilizer (SP-36 150 kg ha-1 and KCl 125 kg ha-1),. Urea supplementation is given based on observations with a leaf color chart (LCC). The results of the study showed that the four new rice HYVs were more adapted as compared to the local rice variety. The performance of the tested new rice HYVs showed quite a good growth appearance and productivity. The highest production was obtained in Inpari 34 Salin Agritan variety 2.85 Mg ha-1, while Inpara 3, Inpara 8, and Inpara 9 ranged between 2.0 and 2.1 Mg ha-1, while the local variety’s productivity was 1.9 Mg ha-1.
