Purpose: This study analyzed the efficacy of Post-Ease, a custom essential oil aromatherapy blend, in decreasing postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and the need for antiemetic drugs in an orthopaedic surgical population. Study Design: This is retrospective cohort study, utilizing electronic health record data pre- and post-implementation of a nurse-driven quality improvement intervention. Methods: The study examined the impact of an inhaled custom blend of essential oils containing lavender, peppermint, ginger and lemon to assist in decreasing PONV and reduce the use of antiemetic medications. Data on the use of antiemetic drugs in pre- and post-intervention periods were analyzed. Findings: Nurses provided the Post-Ease blend 384 times in 2020 to patients as an option before proceeding, if necessary, to antiemetic drugs. The intervention group demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in the number of unique surgical patients’ need for antiemetics as treatment (22%; p = .05). Similarly, the total doses of antiemetics administered was significantly reduced (21%; p ≤ .05) during the study period. Conclusion: This study supports the use of aromatherapy to reduce PONV and minimize antiemetic use in an orthopaedic population.

It has been suggested that mindfulness is a predictive factor in self-reported perceived stress. The present study aimed to investigate the link between mindful attention awareness, perceived stress and subjective wellbeing without the presence of a complementary intervention to promote mindfulness-based strategies. Methods: The online survey participants (N = 257) were university students enrolled in initial teacher training. Self-report measures included the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI). Results: PWI was negatively correlated with PSS (r = −0.550, p = .001), MAAS was negatively correlated with PSS (r = −0.567, p = .001) and positively correlated with PWI (r = 0.336, p = .001). The mean score for PSS (M = 20.61, SD = 6.62) was above the reported norm (14.2). Conclusions: The findings suggest that higher levels of mindful attention awareness may be associated with lower levels of perceived stress and higher subjective wellbeing levels and lower levels of perceived stress may be associated with higher subjective wellbeing. The findings confirm that pre-service teachers are a demographic that experiences elevated levels of perceived stress regardless of the stage in initial teacher training programs.

Objectives: Investigate the change in perceived stress, mindful attention awareness, subjective wellbeing and coping for pre-service teachers (PSTs) and the impact of a pilot 6-h Complementary Intervention (CI).Method: Phase One (N = 79) survey at two timepoints. Perceived Stress Scale, Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, Personal Wellbeing Index and the Brief COPE scale. Phase Two CI pre- and post-program self-report measures (N = 20).Data analysis: Paired-sample and independent sample t-test.Results: The paired-samples t-test confirmed that perceived stress levels (p = 0.082) for PSTs remain elevated across the duration of the academic year. There was not a significant change for the MAAS and sub-scales of the Brief COPE. There was a significant decrease in PWI scores (p = 0.04). The participants in the CI experienced a significant decrease in perceived stress (p = 0.004) pre-program (M = 18.6, SD = 7.04) and post-program (M = 15.55, SD = 6.95), effect size (d = 0.48). Increase in mindful attention awareness (p = 0.019), pre-program (M = 3.49, SD = 0.59) and post-program (M = 3.94, SD = 0.85), effect size (d = −0.57).Conclusion: The findings suggest that perceived stress for PSTs are at above-average levels and a yoga-based CI may provide support for promoting wellbeing and stress management.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of Immersion and Watsu® therapy protocols on children with cerebral palsy. Gross motor function (GMF), spasticity (MAS), and Quality of Life (QoL) parameters of twenty-three children (age: 7.5±2.8, BMI: 17±3.7) were measured. Subjects received Watsu® therapy and Immersion protocols in Watsu-Immersion (W-I, n=12) and Immersion-Watsu (I-W n=11) groups in different periods based on a crossover design. The subjects received sessions for 30 minutes twice a week during 10-week experimental periods. The results were investigated with independent sample t-test and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests, which showed that there was no evidence of carryover effects in GMFM 88 and QoL. In contrast, Watsu® improved GMFM 88 (p<0.05), Quality of Life (p<0.05), and MAS-Upper spasticity (p<0.05), scores significantly compared to immersion. The current results demonstrated the specific benefits of Watsu® therapy on children with CP, confirming the previous anecdotal reports. We recommend Watsu® as a safe and well-accepted complementary intervention for the management of CP.

ABSTRACT Background: The generation of individual behavior is closely related to the environment in which it is located and is easily affected by environmental factors. Objective: The thesis takes the social ecology model theory as the starting point, applies the five different levels of influencing factors in the theoretical model to the field of youth physical exercise behavior, and seeks the interrelationship between the various influencing factors. Methods: Using questionnaire surveys, interviews, and other research methods, the paper makes a simple theoretical combing and analysis of the healthy behavior ecology model, seeks the interrelationship between the influencing factors, propose complementary intervention strategies, and promote the development of adolescents’ physical exercise habits through effective ways. Results: The motivation of sports participation, the protection of physical health, family health awareness, economic and educational environment, professional quality of physical education teachers and school exercise environment and community facilities affect the direction of the development of adolescents’ physical exercise behavior. Conclusions: Only by comprehensively considering the relationship between various related factors can we better understand adolescent physical exercise development characteristics, propose complementary intervention strategies, and promote physical exercise habits effectively. Background: Research shows that transcranial direct current stimulation is effective in reducing depression and anxiety. Objectives: This research is aimed at reducing depression and anxiety in methadone users with transcranial direct current stimulation. Methods: This study is a randomized clinical trial with a pretest-posttest. The sample of this study was 60 methadone users who had severe depression and anxiety. Participants were allocated to two experimental (n = 30) and control groups (n = 30). The two regions, F3 (cathode) and F4 (anode) were stimulated with a current of 2 mA for 20 minutes in 10 sessions. Participants were assessed before and after stimulation with Beck’s depression inventory and Berger’s anxiety test. Results: Data analysis showed that tDCS reduced the symptoms of depression and anxiety in methadone users (P < 0.01). Conclusions: It seems that the method of tDCS can reduce the severity of symptoms of depression and anxiety. Therefore, it can be claimed that this intervention can be considered by experts as a complementary intervention along with other psychological and pharmacological treatments.

In December 2019, in Wuhan (Hubei, China), a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus could be identified (SARS-CoV-2). The need of home isolation to avoid getting the infection and to avoid its spread, have been associated with fear and other psychological consequences in population of affected countries. Music has demonstrated its positive complementary effect in management and improvement of anxiety, depression, pain and other clinical and social situations associated with negative effects in well-being and quality of life. To date, there are no clinical trials that examine directly the relation between music interventions and improvement of negative emotions for people in quarantine but based on previous research we know that it could be employed as an innocuous and safe complementary intervention to help people to alleviate these feelings. Since the pandemic was declared, musicians have taken different instruments and have even used their own voice to play live music from their balconies or even in the street, showing their solidarity and attempts to encourage their neighbors and other people nearby not to give up against COVID-19.

ABSTRACT Introduction Complementary interventions have the potential to enhance treatment engagement and/or response among veterans with psychiatric disorders and/or substance use disorders (SUDs). Mindfulness-based therapeutic sailing (MBTS) is a novel three-session, complementary intervention, which combines nature exposure via recreational sailing and mindfulness training. It was developed specifically to augment both treatment response and engagement among veterans with psychiatric disorders or SUDs. The study reports a follow-up investigation of a version of MBTS modified based upon a previous initial pilot study. Materials and Methods This is an institutional review board–approved study of 25 veterans, 23 males and 2 females, who participated in MBTS along with a diagnosis-, gender-, and age-matched control group. All participants had at least one psychiatric disorder or SUD and most (92%) had two or more conditions, with the most common being any SUD (76%) and PTSD (72%). Instruments used to evaluate within-subjects pre- to post-intervention psychological changes were the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire II (AAQII), the Toronto Mindfulness Scale (TMS), and the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ). The Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) was administered to evaluate how much the participants enjoyed the intervention. Outcome measures were collected for 1-year pre-intervention and 1-year post-intervention for between-subject analyses. These were numbers of medical and psychiatric hospitalizations, emergency department visits, mental health (MH) and substance abuse treatment visits, and MH and substance abuse treatment failed appointments. Data analysis consisted of using paired, two-tailed t-tests on psychological instrument results, Poisson regression on discrete outcome measures, and chi-square test of independence on demographic factors. Results Within-subjects comparisons revealed significant mean pre- to post-intervention increases in AAQII (P = .04) and TMS scores (P = .009). The FFMQ scores increased but the change was nonsignificant (P = .12). The PACES scores were high for all sessions, indicating enjoyment of the intervention by participants. Although the coefficient was nonsignificant, Poisson regression uncovered reduction in substance abuse treatment visits post-intervention. There were no significant differences for the other variables. For demographic factors, the differences between intervention and control groups were not statistically significant. Conclusions The MBTS is associated with increases in psychological flexibility (AAQII) and state mindfulness (TMS). The intervention was perceived as pleasurable by participants (PACES) and is potentially associated with decreased utilization of substance use treatment services. These results must be considered as preliminary; however, these finding corroborate results from a previous pilot study and indicate that MBTS holds promise as a complementary intervention that could result in enhanced treatment engagement and/or outcomes for the population studied. A randomized controlled trial of MBTS is warranted. Further, the model of a three-session intervention combining mindfulness training with nature exposure could be adapted for other types of nature exposure, such as hiking or snowshoeing or other complementary interventions including equine-assisted activities and therapies.
