Kelurahan Malunda is one of the areas affected by an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale in West Sulawesi. Disaster survivors who survive in refugee camps are very vulnerable to post-disaster trauma, which is why the Humanitarian Community Service Program of STIBA Makassar aims to carry out the three principles of higher education by taking on the role of service and humanity in the Malunda area. The method of implementing the program begins by identifying the needs of the people in the affected areas using SOAR analysis which then results in several programs including social service, teaching the Koran with the dirosa method, Muslim taklim, memorizing the Koran for teenagers and a religious child festival. The results of the implementation of this program have had quite a positive effect on the community in dealing with post-earthquake psychological stress, as well as making a significant contribution to the quality of volunteer personnel in helping affected communities in the Malunda village.

Indonesia's territory which is located at the confluence of three major tectonic plates in the world, causes Indonesia to experience frequent natural disasters such as earthquakes. Three areas in Indonesia that experienced major earthquakes in the last 10 years are Aceh, Mataram / Lombok, and Palu. The earthquake not only caused material damage but also psychological trauma. Post-disaster trauma is vulnerable to children and adolescents. Problems experienced from a disaster have an impact on various aspects of life so that they can affect the quality of life of the victim. Quality of life is very important especially for adolescents, because adolescents who have higher quality of life tend to have low physical and psychological problems. Therefore, this study aims to describe the quality of life of adolescents in earthquake areas. Participants in this study were 437 senior high school students aged 12-19 years. All participants came from Aceh (NAD), Mataram (NTB), and Palu (Central Sulawesi). Data collection was carried out through a survey with WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire which consisted of 4 aspects, namely physical, psychological, social, and environmental. Data analysis used descriptive statistical techniques which is processed using the IBM 22.0 version of the SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solutions) computer program and the LISREL 8.80 program. Data collection was carried out before the COVID-19 Pandemic occurred. The results showed that the quality of life of adolescents in terms of physical, psychological, social, and environmental aspects in Aceh, Mataram and Palu was classified as moderate. The results of this study can be used as a first step in designing interventions related to the quality of life of adolescents in earthquake areas. Pengambilan data dilaksanakan sebelum terjadinya pandemi Covid-19.

Research has examined the association between contact with media coverage of mass trauma events and various psychological outcomes, including depression. Disaster-related depression research is complicated by the relatively high prevalence of the major depressive disorder in general populations even without trauma exposure. The extant research is inconclusive regarding associations between disaster media contact and depression outcomes, in part, because most studies have not distinguished diagnostic and symptomatic outcomes, differentiated postdisaster incidence from prevalence, or considered disaster trauma exposures. This study examined these associations in a volunteer sample of 254 employees of New York City businesses after the 11 September 2001, terrorist attacks. Structured interviews and questionnaires were administered 35 months after the attacks. Poisson and logistic regression analyses revealed that post-9/11 news contact significantly predicted the number of postdisaster persistent/recurrent and incident depressive symptoms in the full sample and in the indirect and unexposed groups. The findings suggest that clinical and public health approaches should be particularly alert to potential adverse postdisaster depression outcomes related to media consumption in disaster trauma-unexposed or indirectly-exposed groups.

Abstract Most would agree that older adults represent a highly vulnerable group prior to, during and post disaster. Age-related vulnerabilities often lead into an increased risk for traumatic experiences and post-traumatic stress symptoms after a disaster. Trauma informed principles offer a possible way to reduce the vulnerability of older adults after a disaster. For example, utilizing the trauma informed question “what has happened to you” shifts the focus from a deficit approach and allows for a deeper understanding of the impact of traumatic life experiences on current functioning and reaction to the disaster. It is this understanding of trauma’s impact that may have a role in how older adult disaster survivors view, respond, and recover after a natural disaster (Seery et.al. 2010; Iacoviello & Charney, 2014). In addition, understanding the role of lifetime adversity provides critical insights for disaster planning, reducing vulnerability and promoting resilience among older disaster survivors.

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this study was to examine associations between media contact and posttraumatic stress in a sample with a large number of individuals who were directly exposed to the September 11, 2001 (9/11) attacks and to compare outcomes in exposed and unexposed participants. Methods: Structured interviews and questionnaires were administered to a volunteer sample of 254 employees of New York City businesses 35 months after the attacks to document disaster trauma exposures, posttraumatic stress outcomes, and media contact and reactions. Results: Media variables were not associated with psychopathological outcomes in exposed participants, but media contact in the first week after the attacks and feeling moderately/extremely bothered by graphic 9/11 media images were associated with re-experiencing symptoms in both the exposed and unexposed participants. Feeling moderately/extremely bothered by graphic media images was associated with hyperarousal symptoms in exposed participants. Conclusions: The findings suggest that media contact did not lead to psychopathology in exposed individuals, although it was associated with normative distress in both exposure groups. Because of the potential for adverse effects associated with media contact, clinicians and public health professionals are encouraged to discuss concerns about mass trauma media contact with their patients and the public at large.

ABSTRACTItaly is fighting against one of the worst medical emergency since the 1918 Spanish Flu. Pressure on the hospitals is tremendous. As for official data on March 14th: 8372 admitted in hospitals, 1518 in intensive care units, 1441 deaths (175 more than the day before). Unfortunately, hospitals are not prepared: even where a plan for massive influx of patients is present, it usually focuses on sudden onset disaster trauma victims (the most probable case scenario), and it has not been tested, validated, or propagated to the staff. Despite this, the All Hazards Approach for management of major incidents and disasters is still valid and the “4S” theory (staff, stuff, structure, systems) for surge capacity can be guidance to respond to this disaster.
