This article explores how Latinx youth engagement practices vary across different types of out-of-school organizations that successfully sustain Latinx youth participation. Data are drawn from a qualitative study of 13 California organizations that each emphasize one of 3 missions: social justice youth development, “one-stop” wrap-around services, or academic enrichment. While all organizations are found to adhere to a core set of Latinx youth development guiding principles, there are nuanced differences in how they are operationalized in practice across varied organization types, reflecting variation in terms of discourse, scale, and scope. These findings highlight the need for youth development practitioners and collaborating researchers to understand the context of youth-serving organizations when identifying and implementing promising practices and extension programs.

Scientific research is one of the important tasks of students at university. Encouraging students to participate in scientific research contributes greatly to improving the quality of training and student output. This study investigates psychological barriers to participating in scientific research activities of students in terms of awareness, interest and scientific research skills. The study was carried out on a sample of 206 third-year students at a number of universities in Ho Chi Minh City. Research results showed that 17.5% of students have low barriers, 68.4% have medium barriers and 14.1% have high barriers. The barriers of interest and skills are more than awareness ones, these three aspects are positively correlated. There is no statistical difference between male, female and between majors in the level of psychological barriers to participate in scientific research. In order to promote students to participate in scientific research activities, schools, lecturers and school organizations need to pay attention and have appropriate solutions to help them remove psychological barriers.

PurposeThis study addresses the perspective of N = 273 school principals as related to technology role in performing managerial roles.Design/methodology/approachIn the context of this study, the concept of technology only refers to digital office tools such as microcomputers, email and administrative software. The concept of managerial roles is understood and used herein in relation to the definition provided by Mintzberg (2013) in his managerial typology. Moreover, a survey method was used to collect data from the aforementioned managerial employees. The managerial typology of Mintzberg was applied as a theoretical lens to collect and interpret survey data.FindingsThe findings suggest that surveyed school principals believe that technology use improves their ability to perform informational and decisional roles at work. Arguably, these managerial employees are satisfied with using technology as a labor tool for administrative and managerial work.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is limited because its sample size does not allow the findings to be generalized to all Canadian school principals. Nevertheless, the findings are significant because they suggest that similar to the positive technology-related attitude of managerial employees in business organizations, those in school organizations also perceive technology as an organizational asset. For that reason, management scholars should not only limit their studies of the intersection between technology and managerial roles or work to business organizations. They also need to extend their research studies and fieldwork to school organizations.Originality/valueThe originality of this study lies in the fact that in management literature, the intersection between technology and the managerial roles of school principals is underresearched. As such, this study represents a step forward toward the need to study the technology-related behaviors of school principals to better understand how technology use enables their workflow system.

This is evidenced by the t count of 2.981 while the t table of 2.064 at the significant level of 0.05. Based on these results t count is greater than t table. So it can be concluded that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected so that there is an effect of active participation of intra-school organizations on student learning outcomes by 4% while the remaining 96% is influenced by other factors not examined in this study. This can be seen from the value of R Square.

BACKGROUND: Finding solutions to increase the efficiency of school organizations is needed in Romanian national education system. In this context, a previous general theoretical approach on school as learning organization (SLO) has been developed based on the literature review. Most, the article debates the case of the sport schools (whether they are school sports clubs or schools with integrated sports program) in the context of the pre-university education system. Due to the proximity to performances in competitions and the pressures they exert, this type of schools should be much more willing to collaborate and keen to learn and adapt. Therefore, it is more likely to develop elements specific to the concept of learning organization. OBJECTIVE: The research aims to establish to what extent certain key-characteristics specific to the integrated model of school as learning organization are identifiable at the level of the sport schools’ organization. METHODS: The research is based on data collected in a diachronic way, from two consecutive school years and from two samples with a total of 471 urban and rural schools, out of which 34 are school sports organizations. The data were collected from 471 external quality audit reports of the schools. Statistical checks using z parameter tests (two-tail) were developed to determine whether the results of each sample are reliable and whether the two samples could be concatenated. RESULTS: At the samples’ level, the minimum levels of incidence of several key-characteristics of SLO’s can be identified, these varying between 55.88% and 85.29% for school sports organizations and between 50.74% and 71.76% for school organizations without a sports program. These results were only for three action-oriented dimensions of the proposed SLO integrated model: “creating and supporting continuous learning opportunities for all staff”, “embedding systems for collecting and exchanging knowledge and learning” and “learning with and from the external environment and larger learning system”. CONCLUSIONS: The research results are related to two management practices regarding “cooperation and collaboration inside and outside school boundaries” and “support that is provided to continuous learning opportunities for all staff”. Thus, the results will be used to provide evidence to support the implementation of the SLO model at Romanian national level and, in the long run, to help increase the schools’ efficiency.

After decades of accountability and market-based reforms in education, school systems are now organizing more around improving teaching and learning. Yet these efforts frequently yield unintended, superficial, or even counterproductive changes at the school level. In this article, Maxwell Yurkofsky develops the concept of technical ceremonies as a way of theorizing this emerging pattern of school organizations. Technical ceremonies involve educators changing their practice to align with new reforms in a way that privileges what is visible and measurable as a way of appeasing external stakeholders over more substantive improvements to practice. He argues that technical ceremonies arise as principals navigate a multitude of surface-level demands from the environment and the uncertainties that pervade efforts to transform teaching and learning.
