Abstract Discrimination has been identified as a potentially modifiable environmental stressor that reduces cognitive function. As the burden of discrimination can extend from early to late life, understanding its role in cognition in late life is critical. Further, understanding the potential moderating influence of depressive symptoms, which are common among older adults, on the linkage between discrimination and cognition, may provide further insight into the potential patterns of psychosocial stress and negative affect that may promote cognitive decline and dementia. Thus, we sought to examine whether depressive symptoms moderate linear relations of lifetime discrimination to cognitive function in the domains of visuospatial, verbal, and working memory, executive function, and psychomotor ability, adjusting for age, sex, race, and education. Participants were 165 older adults (34% male) with a mean age of 68.43y. Participants completed a health screening, a battery of cognitive tests, a psychosocial assessment, and cardiovascular testing relevant to the larger study. Linear regression results showed a significant interaction between lifetime discrimination and depressive symptoms (p<.05) related to the Stroop interference score, a measure of inhibition. A probe of the interaction showed that greater lifetime discrimination was associated with better inhibition among participants with fewer depressive symptoms. This paradoxical finding is consistent with scant research that shows exposure to discrimination may heighten performance, and is more common among individuals that have achieved more, both educationally and vocationally. Greater depressive symptomatology may reduce this paradoxical association. Future research should explore this question both longitudinally and in a larger sample.

Abstract Introduction We assessed whether expert mentoring improved the rate of uptake of robotic surgical skill and whether general advanced psychomotor ability (PMA), and specific video-game experience (VGE) had any impact on robotic surgical skill. Method Twenty robotically naive medical students were blinded and randomised to two cohorts; control (CC) and intervention (IC). Each student's initial performance on a variety of da Vinci Skills Simulator (dVSSim) exercises was measured and then reassessed following an independent practice (CC) or mentor guided practice session (IC). Outcome metrics were overall score, time to completion, economy of motion and master workspace range. Quantitative, questionnaire data was collected to evaluate the relationship between robotic surgical skill, PMA and VGE. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS software utilising the independent t-test. Result On average, overall score for CC improved by 16.8% compared to 43.3% for the IC (p=0.04). Time to completion improved by 26.2% (CC) vs. 40% (IC), economy of motion by 16.5% vs. 25% and master workspace range by 8% vs. 11%. PMA correlated with better initial performances for all metrics, especially for overall score (p=0.003) and economy of motion (p=0.03). Students with more VGE had overall scores that were on average 20% better than those with little or no experience and this relationship was also seen for economy of motion and master workspace range. Conclusion Expert mentoring leads to a greater improvement in performance than independent practice alone. Advanced PMA correlates with greater innate robotic skill, as does VGE, but to a lesser extent. Take-home message 1) Expert mentoring leads to a greater improvement in performance than independent practice alone. 2) Advanced PMA correlates with greater innate robotic skill, as does VGE, but to a lesser extent.

The purpose of the research was to investigate the level of self-esteem in visually impaired children in order to determine, together with investigations on other levels (health, psychomotor ability, physical development), the level of their quality of life compared to children of the same age without impairments. The self-esteem level was investigated using the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory on a sample of 30 participants from the Special Secondary School for Visually Impaired Students in Bucharest, with an average age of 11 years. The applied test represents a modern psychometric instrument, which has been validated in a variety of research programs. It helps to better understand the students evaluated regarding their self-esteem by measuring the evaluative attitudes of the self in various planes of their existence. The standard form for students contains five subscales: general perception of self, social self-peers, home-parents, school-academic experience and distortion scale. Following the application of the test, it has been noted that the level of self-esteem of the visually impaired is higher, on average, than that of the average population of Romanian students without visual impairments. Considering the results, some decisions will be made regarding the approach to teaching dancesport to the visually impaired and, at the same time, we will be able to observe how practicing this sport can influence the evolution of self-esteem in the visually impaired, as an element of their quality of life.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of contextual learning models based on hands-on activities on students' psychomotor abilities. This type of research is a quasi-experimental using pretest posttest control group design. The results showed the psychomotor ability of students in the experimental class averaged 79.63 which was categorized as "good" while the control class obtained an average of 68.93 which was also categorized as "good".  Hypothesis testing using t test shows the results of tcount = 4.73 while the t table = 2.002 so that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. This means that there is a significant difference between learning using hands-on contextual learning models compared to contextual learning models based on conventional practicum student psychomotor abilities. The results of the correlation coefficient test, the experimental class got the value of rxy = 0.9965 and the contribution was 99.30% while the control class was rxy = 0.987 and the contribution was 97.42% with the value of r (0.05) (30) = 0.361.  Thus rcount> rtable which means that there is a very strong relationship between psychomotor abilities and cognitive knowledge on water pollution material based on the interpretation coefficient interpretation table in the two classes.
