Alkaline chlorination, an efficient but high chemical cost process, is commonly employed for cyanide (CN−) removal from CN-rich wastewater streams. CN− removal and recovery through the precipitation of Prussian Blue (Fe4III[FeII(CN)6]3, PB) or Turnbull’s Blue (Fe3II[FeIII(CN)6]2, TB) were realized using iron salts, leading to a cost-effective and sustainable process producing a valuable recovery product. However, the precipitation of PB and TB is highly affected by pH and dissolved oxygen (DO). CN− removal and recovery from CN-containing water by crystallization of PB and/or TB were investigated using dissolved iron that was electrochemically generated from a sacrificial iron anode under various pH values, initial CN− levels (10 to100 mg/L) and DO levels (aeration, mechanical mixing, and N2 purging). It was shown that the complexation of CN− with Fe ions prevented the vaporization of HCN under acidic pH. At pH of 7 and initial CN− concentration of 10 mg/L, CN− removal efficiency increases linearly with increasing Fe:CN− molar ratios, reaching 80% at the Fe:CN− molar ratio of 5. A clear blue precipitate was observed between the pH range of 5–7. CN− removal increases with increasing initial CN− concentration, resulting in residual CN− concentrations of 8, 7.5 and 12 mg/L in the effluent with the Fe:CN− molar ratio of 0.8 for initial concentrations of 10, 50 and 100 mg CN−/L, respectively. A polishing treatment with H2O2 oxidation was employed to lower the residual CN− concentration to meet the discharge limit of <1 mg CN−/L.

Tin disulfide has substantial importance for two-dimensional material-based optoelectronics and sensors due to its unique optoelectrical properties. In this report, we fabricate SnS2 nanosheets using the low-pressure thermal sulfurization process, whose crystal structure and surface morphology are confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements. From photoconductivity measurement and photocurrent mapping, we observe smaller electrode spacing of SnS2 thin films can enhance photodetection. Then, by the H2O2 oxidation processing, we transform SnS2 to SnO2 to detect humidity. The measured response and recovery time can be optimized to 5.6 and 1.0 s, respectively, shorter than those of commercial DHT11 humidity sensor of 32 and 34 s. At suitable bias, humidity sensor can detect human respiration properly at room temperature. Our results show that SnS2 nanosheets exhibit reasonable performance for emergent photodetector applications and humidity sensing.

The use of naturally occurring materials with antibacterial properties has gained a great interest in infected wound management. Despite being an abundant resource in Vietnam, chitosan and its derivatives have not yet been intensively explored for their potential in such application. Here, we utilized a local chitosan source to synthesize chitosan oligomers (OCS) using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) oxidation under the microwave irradiation method. The effects of H2O2 concentration on the physicochemical properties of OCS were investigated through molecular weight, degree of deacetylation, and heavy metal contamination for optimization of OCS formulation. Then, the antibacterial inhibition was examined; the minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration (MIC and MBC) of OCS-based materials were determined against common skin-inhabitant pathogens. The results show that the local Vietnamese chitosan and its derivative OCS possessed high-yield purification while the molecular weight of OCS was inversely proportional and proportional to the concentration of H2O2, respectively. Further, the MIC and MBC of OCS ranged from 3.75 to less than 15 mg/mL and 7.5–15 mg/mL, respectively. Thus, OCS-based materials induce excellent antimicrobial properties and can be attractive for wound dressings and require further investigation.

Lignin is the second most abundant component, next to cellulose, in lignocellulosic biomass. Large amounts of this polymer are produced annually in the pulp and paper industries as a coproduct from the cooking process—most of it burned as fuel for energy. Strategies regarding lignin valorization have attracted significant attention over the recent decades due to lignin’s aromatic structure. Oxidative depolymerization allows converting lignin into added-value compounds, as phenolic monomers and/or dicarboxylic acids, which could be an excellent alternative to aromatic petrochemicals. However, the major challenge is to enhance the reactivity and selectivity of the lignin structure towards depolymerization and prevent condensation reactions. This review includes a comprehensive overview of the main contributions of lignin valorization through oxidative depolymerization to produce added-value compounds (vanillin and syringaldehyde) that have been developed over the recent decades in the LSRE group. An evaluation of the valuable products obtained from oxidation in an alkaline medium with oxygen of lignins and liquors from different sources and delignification processes is also provided. A review of C4 dicarboxylic acids obtained from lignin oxidation is also included, emphasizing catalytic conversion by O2 or H2O2 oxidation.
