AbstractYucca in the American desert Southwest typically flowers in early spring, but a well-documented anomalous bloom event occurred during an unusually cold and wet late fall and early winter 2018–2019. We used community science photographs to generate flowering presence and absence data. We fit phenoclimatic models to determine which climate variables are explanatory for normal flowering, and then we tested if the same conditions that drive normal blooming also drove the anomalous blooming event. Flowering for Yucca brevifolia (Joshua tree) and Yucca schidigera (Mojave yucca) is driven by complex, nonlinear interactions between daylength, temperature, and precipitation. To our surprise, early-season flowering odds are highest in colder and drier conditions, especially for Joshua trees, but increase with precipitation late-season. However, the models used to fit normal blooming overpredicted the number of anomalous blooms compared to what was actually observed. Thus, predicting anomalous flowering events remains a challenge for quantitative phenological models. Because our model overpredicted the number of anomalous blooms, there are likely other factors, such as biotic interactions or other seasonal factors, which may be especially important in controlling what is presumed to be rare, out-of-season flowering in desert-adapted Yucca.

The poultry sector is one of the most vibrant segments of the agriculture industry of Pakistan. In addition to different infections, ammonia (NH3) production from litter material of broiler is the most harmful pollutant and causes serious threats for the environment. To overcome this problem, different methods are proposed assuring poultry bird’s health and production. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of toxic levels of NH3 on the haematology and serum proteins of broiler birds and its amelioration by using different modifiers. The recovery of Escherichia coli ( E. coli) from liver and spleen of broiler birds was also carried out. A total of 100 birds were divided into 5 separate groups (groups A–D). The groups C, D and E were treated with potassium aluminium sulphate, aluminium silicate and Yucca schidigera plant extract, respectively. Blood and tissue samples were collected after slaughtering the birds at 42 days of age. This study revealed increased RBC, total leucocyte count, Hb and heterophils percentage. Serum proteins were decreased in Yucca-treated and potassium aluminium sulphate–treated groups. This study concluded that NH3 production was reduced by the application of different modifiers, and these modifiers also neutralized the changes in blood parameters induced by NH3.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary Yucca schidigera extract (YSE) supplementation to sow performance, nutrients digestibility and ammonia emission of manure. Total 80 sows were randomly divided into 4 groups and fed with either control, control + 0.06% YSE, control + 0.12% YSE or control + 0.24% YSE diet from day 80 of gestation to day 21 of lactation. The results showed that dietary YSE supplementation resulted in trends toward a reduced number of stillbirth piglets (P = 0.08), weak piglets (P = 0.06), pre-weanling mortality (P = 0.04) and diarrhea (P = 0.03), and improved apparent digestibility of dry matter (P = 0.04). Besides, YSE supplementation significantly increased catalase activity (P = 0.02) while decreasing malonaldehyde levels (P = 0.04) in sow blood. Furthermore, the loss of total nitrogen, urea nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen in sow manure were significantly reduced with supplementation of YSE. In summary, supplementation of YSE in sow diet during late gestation and lactation could improve sow and litter performance, nutrient digestibility, and reduce nitrogen loss in sow manure during storage.

Ammonia is a critical hazardous nitrogen metabolic product in aquaculture. Despite trials for its control, ammonia intoxication remains one of the most critical issues to overcome. In this study, we explored the modulatory effect and potential mechanism by which Yucca schidigera extract (YSE) can ameliorate ammonia intoxication-induced adverse effects on tilapia health and metabolism. A total number of 120 Nile tilapia were evenly assigned into four groups with three replicates each. The first group served as normal control group; the second group was exposed to ammonia alone from the beginning of the experiment and for four weeks. The third group was supplied with YSE in water at a dose of 8 mg/L and exposed to ammonia. The fourth group was supplied with YSE only in water at a dose of 8 mg/L. YSE supplementation succeeded in improving water quality by reducing pH and ammonia levels. Moreover, YSE supplementation markedly alleviated chronic ammonia-induced adverse impacts on fish growth by increasing the final body weight (FBW), specific growth rate (SGR), feed intake and protein efficiency ratio (PER) while reducing the feed conversion ratio (FCR) via improvements in food intake, elevation of hepatic insulin-like growth factor (ILGF-1) and suppression of myostatin (MSTN) expression levels with the restoration of lipid reserves and the activation of lipogenic potential in adipose tissue as demonstrated by changes in the circulating metabolite levels. In addition, the levels of hepato-renal injury biomarkers were restored, hepatic lipid peroxidation was inhibited and the levels of hepatic antioxidant biomarkers were enhanced. Therefore, the current study suggests that YSE supplementation exerted an ameliorative role against chronic ammonia-induced oxidative stress and toxic effects due to its free radical-scavenging potential, potent antioxidant activities and anti-inflammatory effects.

Weaning piglets experienced the transformation from breast milk to solid feed and present the proliferation of pathogens, the presence of diarrhea, poor growth performance and even death. Plant extracts and probiotics have certain potential in improving animal growth performance, antioxidant capacity and immune function. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of dietary yucca schidigera extract (YSE) and oral Candida utilis (CU) on growth performance and intestinal health weaned piglets. According to a 2 × 2 factorial design with the main factors being CU (orally administered 1 mL of 0.85% saline with or without CU; fed basal diet with or without 120 mg/kg YSE), forty 28 d healthy weaned piglets were randomly allocated into four groups of 10 barrows each: (1) piglets fed basal diet and orally administered 1 mL of 0.85% saline (CON); (2) piglets fed basal diet and orally administered 1 mL 1 × 109 cfu/mL C. utilis in 0.85% saline (CU); (3) piglets fed the basal diet containing YSE (120 mg/kg) and orally administered 1 mL of 0.85% saline (YSE); (4) Piglets fed the basal diet containing 120 mg/kg YSE and 1 mL 1 × 109 cfu/mL C. utilis in 0.85% saline (YSE+CU). This study lasted 28 days and evaluated the effects of dietary YSE and oral CU on growth performance, immunity, antioxidant function, ileal morphology, and intestinal microflora in weaned piglets. Dietary YSE increased ADG, the spleen and lymph node indexes, serum GLU, BUN, T-SOD, T-AOC, CAT concentrations, ileal villus height and villus height/crypt depth, jejunal occludin, and β-definsin-2 concentrations and ileal occludin concentration in weaned piglets (P < 0.05); decreased the diarrhea rate and mortality, rectal pH and urine pH, the BUN and MDA concentrations, crypt depth (P < 0.05); improved the diversity of cecal microflora. Orally CU increased ADG, and ADFI, the T-SOD, T-AOC, and CAT activity, ileal villus height, villus height/crypt depth, jejunum occludin, and β-definsin-2 concentrations (P < 0.05); reduced the diarrhea rate and mortality, urine pH, the BUN and MDA concentrations, crypt depth (P < 0.05); improved the diversity of cecal microflora. Dietary YSE and orally CU increased the T-SOD, T-AOC, and CAT activity, villus height/crypt depth, jejunal occludin concentration; reduced the diarrhea rate of weaned piglets by 28%, gastric pH, ileal pH, cecal pH and urine pH, MDA, crypt depth; improved the diversity of cecal microflora. YSE and CU could improve the growth performance, reduce the diarrhea rate, improve intestinal health, and increase the diversity and abundance of cecal microflora in weaned piglets and expected to be used as antibiotics alternative feed additives in the production of weaned piglets.

Abstract The study herein evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with different Yucca (Yucca schidigera) extract levels on rearing water quality, growth performance, protein utilization, hematological and immunological status, and economic benefits of cultured European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles. Yucca extract (YE) was incorporated in an experimental diet at levels of 0, 0.25, 0.50, and 1 g YE kg−1, and offered to fish reared in 70-L glass aquaria (15 fish per aquarium; three replicates each). Dietary YE supplementation significantly (p < 0.05) decreased ammonia-nitrogen levels in water. Compared with the control, groups fed 0.50 and 1 g YE kg−1 diets showed improved growth performance (by 26.02% and 36.98%, respectively) and protein efficiency ratio (by 31.39% and 37.29%, respectively). In addition, hematological parameters (red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, white blood cells and neutrophil) and innate immune parameters (globulin fractions and lysozyme activity) improved with increasing dietary YE levels. Growth, hematological, and immunological parameters increased with a polynomial second-order regression models, with curves peak close to 1 g YE kg−1 diet. The cortisol level decreased significantly (p < 0.05) with increasing dietary YE levels. The groups fed the 0.50 and 1 g YE kg−1 diets generated significantly (p < 0.05) higher revenue than groups fed the 0.25 g YE kg−1 and the control diets. The using of YE is recommended as a dietary feed additive at a level of 1 g kg−1 for reducing the environmental footprint of fish protein production, accelerating growth, and improving health status of cultured seabass in a short-term feeding period.

Enteric pathogens such as Salmonella enterica can survive in low pH conditions and pose a food safety threat during marinating of raw poultry meat. A study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of thyme oil for killing S. enterica on raw chicken during marination in lemon juice containing yucca extract. Samples of raw chicken breast were inoculated with a five-serovar mixture of S. enterica (~108 CFU/mL) and immersed for 2, 4, 6, and 8 h in four lemon-based marinades at 22°C: lemon juice alone (L), L with added 0.5% yucca extract (L + Y), L + Y and 0.5% thyme oil (L + Y + 0.5% TO) and L + Y + 1.0% TO. The L and L + Y served as controls. Survivors were determined by surface plating chicken homogenates on xylose-lysine tergitol-4 (XLT4) agar and XLT4 agar overlaid with non-selective agar (TAL) and counting bacterial colonies after 48 h of incubation (35°C). Marinades containing Y and TO significantly reduced initial viable populations of S. enterica compared to control (L and L + Y) solutions (P &lt; 0.05). Based on S. enterica survivors on TAL medium, the L and L + Y reduced initial populations by 1.12 and 1.42 Log CFU/sample, respectively, after 8 h whereas, Log reductions caused by L + Y + 0.5% TO and L + Y + 1.0% TO, respectively, were 2.62 and 3.91 (P &lt; 0.05). Numbers of survivors were higher on TAL compared to XLT4 agar (P &lt; 0.05); however, the extent of sub-lethal injury caused by the marinades was not statistically significant (P &gt; 0.05). The death rate of S. enterica increased significantly (P &lt; 0.05) in the marinades containing TO (0.5 or 1.0%) compared to control (L + Y). Based on these results, thyme oil has good potential to increase the antimicrobial efficacy of lemon juice marinade against Salmonella on raw chicken breast and enhance the microbial safety of this popular poultry product.
