Abstract A first cavitation modeling with thermal effects for oil/refrigerant solutions lubricated ElastoHydroDynamic (EHD) point contacts is reported in this work. The solubility of the oil/refrigerant system is introduced into the Generalized Reynolds equation coupled with the elasticity equation and the energy conservation equation. The numerical results show a very good agreement with the published experimental results concerning film thickness prediction. Moreover, the present model describes the cavitation region on a physical basis. A discussion with other cavitation models from the literature is proposed. It puts into light the necessity of taking into account the solubility of the refrigerant into oil for such problems. Compared to pure oil, oil/refrigerant solutions can potentially reduce the amount of liquid oil for the next contact due to its higher cavitation intensity.

Ship fouling not only increases ship resistance and fuel consumption but is equally a type of biological invasion, which causes severe ecological damage. Submerged cavitation jet cleaning is an environmentally friendly, high-efficiency, and energy-saving cleaning method. The nozzle structure has an essential influence on the cleaning effect. Thus, a two-throat nozzle was designed for application in submerged cavitation jet cleaning. To investigate the cavitation characteristics of the two-throat nozzle, a high-speed photographic visualization experiment and an erosion experiment concerning the submerged cavitation jet were carried out in this study. The frame-difference method (FDM) was used to analyze the dynamic changes in the cavitation cloud in a single period. The dynamic changes in the cavitation cloud and the characteristics of the submerged cavitation jet were investigated under different inlet pressures. The sample mass loss and the macroscopic and microscopic changes in surface morphology were used to evaluate the cavitation intensity of the two-throat nozzle submerged jet. The experimental results demonstrate that the two-throat nozzle has a good cavitation effect, and the cavitation cloud of the submerged jet has obvious periodicity. With the increase in inlet pressure, the length, width, and area of the cavitation cloud continue to increase, and the shedding frequency of the cavitation cloud continues to decrease. The intensity of cavitation erosion is related to target distance and impact time. There is an appropriate target distance by which to achieve the optimal cavitation effect. The collapse of cavitation bubbles near the sample surface is related to the erosion distribution on the sample surface. Moreover, the magnitude of the absolute values of the root-mean-square surface roughness and surface skewness increase with cavitation intensity. The results in this paper are helpful for a better understanding of the cavitation characteristics of the two-throat nozzle submerged jet.

AbstractThe maximum delivery pressure and the maximum rotational speed determine the power density of axial piston pumps. However, increasing the speed beyond the limit always accompanies cavitation, leading to the decrease of the volumetric efficiency. The pressure loss in the suction duct is considered a significant reason for the cavitation. Therefore, this paper proposes a methodology to optimize the shape of the suction duct aiming at reducing the intensity of cavitation and increasing the speed limit. At first, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on the full cavitation model (FCM) is developed to simulate the fluid field of the axial piston pump and a test rig is set to validate the model. Then the topology optimization is conducted for obtaining the minimum pressure loss in the suction duct. Comparing the original suction duct with the optimized one in the simulation model, the pressure loss in the suction duct gets considerable reduction, which eases the cavitation intensity a lot. The simulation results prove that the speed limit can increase under several different inlet pressures.

Ultrasonic-based techniques allow the prediction of the energy required to break the aggregate and have been more commonly used to measure the stability of aggregates. Although they result in the same applied energy, certain combinations of time and power might correspond to different intensities of cavitation. Consequently, different responses in aggregation indexes can be obtained with different configurations of ultrasound techniques. Thus, this work was carried out to evaluate the effects of cavitation intensity in the distribution of aggregates of a Paleudalf under management systems with cover plants and to compare aggregate stability determination methods (ultrasound versus wet sieving). Aggregate samples of the BS (bare soil), OT (black oat + forage turnips) and OV (black oat + hairy vetch) treatments were exposed to ultrasonic irradiation in different combinations of potency and time: (U1) 74.5 W/4 s; (U2) 49.7 W/6 s; (U3) 74.5 W/10 s and (U4) 49.7 W/15 s. After each sonification, the samples were passed in the same set of sieves used in the standard method of wet sieving -WS (8.00 - 4.76, 4.76 - 2.00, 2.00 - 1.00, 1.00 - 0.25 and < 0.25 mm) and the geometric mean diameter (GMD) and mass-weighted mean diameter (WMD) were calculated. The amplitude of vibration exerted a greater influence on soil breakdown than the total energy applied. Compared to the ultrasound method, in the WS method observed higher percentage of retained aggregates in the size class 8-4.76 mm and, consequently, greater aggregation indexes GMD and WMD.

Abstract The steam trap valve is used in thermal power systems to pour out condensate water and keep steam inside. While flowing through steam trap valves, the condensate water can easily reach cavitation, which may cause serious damage to the piping system. In this paper, in order to control cavitation inside steam trap valves, effects of sleeve parameters, including orifice diameter, installation angle and thickness, are investigated using a cavitation model. The pressure, velocity and vapor distribution inside valves are analyzed and compared for different sleeve geometrical parameters. The total vapor volumes are also predicted and compared. The results show that the sleeve parameters have a significant influence on the cavitation intensity and cavitation vapor distributions. Specifically, the orifice diameter of the sleeve has much larger effect on each aspect than that of other two geometrical parameters of the sleeve. The improved geometrical parameters of the sleeve are determined to suppress the cavitation inside the valve. The sleeve with smaller diameter orifices, higher installation angle (maximum 80°) and higher thickness is recommended in practice for better anti-cavitation performance. The work is of significance for cavitation control and the optimization design of steam trap valves.

AbstractHigh-pressure water jets bear a great technological potential to enhance geothermal deep drilling. Compared to existing water cutting technologies, significantly different operation conditions are encountered under deep-drilling conditions, such as high ambient pressures. The fundamental fluid mechanics are significantly affected by those operation conditions. In this work we examine the influence of increasing ambient pressure of up to 12.0 MPa on the water jet characteristics under submerged drilling conditions. PIV measurements of the jet flow field at changing cavitation numbers reveal two characteristic regimes, which are distinguished by a critical cavitation number. In the cavitating regime, the jet decays considerably faster with increasing distance to the nozzle than in the non-cavitating regime. In addition to that, an increasing cavitation intensity shortens the potential core length of the water jet and increases the jet spreading angle and with this has a similar effect on the jet as increasing turbulence intensity in single-phase flows. Related to the decreasing kinetic energy of the jet in the cavitating regime, the resulting impact force of the water jet on the specimen surface decreases with increasing cavitation intensity. Our investigations indicate that a technology transfer from water jet cutting to submerged jet drilling requires adjustments of both nozzle geometries and jet operation conditions. Graphic abstract

A new engine block with optical access has been designed and manufactured capable of running up to 3000 r/min with the same specification as the unmodified engine. The optical window allowed access to the full length of the liner over a width of 25 mm to investigate the lubricant flow and cavitation at contact point between the rings and cylinder-liner. In addition, it allowed good access into the combustion chamber to allow charged flow, spray and combustion visualisation and measurements using different optical methods. New custom engine management system with build in LabView allowed for the precise full control of the engine. The design of the new optical engine was a great success in producing high quality images of lubricant flow, cavitation formation and development at contact point at different engine speeds ranging from 208 to 3000 r/min and lubricant temperatures (30°C–70°C) using a high-speed camera. The results under motorised operation confirmed that there was no cavitation at contact points during the intake/exhaust strokes due to low in-cylinder presure, while during compression/expansion strokes, with high in-cylinder pressure, considerable cavities were observed, in particular, during the compression stroke. Lubricant temperatures had the effect of promoting cavities both in their intensity and covered ring area up to 50°C as expected. Beyond that, although the cavitation intensity increases further with temperature, its area reduces due to possible collapse of the cavitating bubbles at higher temperature. The change of engine speed from 208 to 800 r/min increased cavitating area considerably by 52% of the ring area and was further increased by 19% at 1000 r/min. After that, the results showed very small increase in cavitation area (1.3% at 2000 r/min) with similar intensity and distribution across the ring.
