In order to alleviate membrane fouling and improve removal efficiency, a series of pretreatment technologies were applied to the ultrafiltration process. In this study, ClO2 was used as a pre-oxidation strategy for the ultrafiltration (UF) process. Humic acid (HA), sodium alginate (SA), and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were used as three typical organic model foulants, and the mixture of the three substances was used as a representation of simulated natural water. The dosages of ClO2 were 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 mg/L, with 90 min pre-oxidation. The results showed that ClO2 pre-oxidation at low doses (1–2 mg/L) could alleviate the membrane flux decline caused by humus, polysaccharides, and simulated natural water, but had a limited alleviating effect on the irreversible resistance of the membrane. The interfacial free energy analysis showed that the interaction force between the membrane and the simulated natural water was also repulsive after the pre-oxidation, indicating that ClO2 pre-oxidation was an effective way to alleviate cake layer fouling by reducing the interaction between the foulant and the membrane. In addition, ClO2 oxidation activated the hidden functional groups in the raw water, resulting in an increase in the fluorescence value of humic analogs, but had a good removal effect on the fluorescence intensity of BSA. Furthermore, the membrane fouling fitting model showed that ClO2, at a low dose (1 mg/L), could change the mechanism of membrane fouling induced by simulated natural water from standard blocking and cake layer blocking to critical blocking. Overall, ClO2 pre-oxidation was an efficient pretreatment strategy for UF membrane fouling alleviation, especially for the fouling control of HA and SA at low dosages.

The concept of liquid metal membranes for hydrogen separation, based on gallium or indium, was recently introduced as an alternative to conventional palladium-based membranes. The potential of this class of gas separation materials was mainly attributed to the promise of higher hydrogen diffusivity. The postulated improvements are only beneficial to the flux if diffusion through the membrane is the rate-determining step in the permeation sequence. Whilst this is a valid assumption for hydrogen transport through palladium-based membranes, the relatively low adsorption energy of hydrogen on both liquid metals suggests that other phenomena may be relevant. In the current study, a microkinetic modeling approach is used to enable simulations based on a five-step permeation mechanism. The calculation results show that for the liquid metal membranes, the flux is limited by the dissociative adsorption over a large temperature range, and that the membrane flux is expected to be orders of magnitude lower compared to the membrane flux through pure palladium membranes. Even when accounting for the lower cost of the liquid metals compared to palladium, the latter still outperforms both gallium and indium in all realistic scenarios, in part due to the practical difficulties associated with making liquid metal thin films.

Hydrolyzed collagen with different fractions is broadly applied in various industries due to its functional properties. The study aimed to purify and fractionate the hydrolyzed collagen from yellowfin tuna skin by ultrafiltration and evaluate the functional properties of its fractions. The effect of temperature, pH, and pressure on membrane flux, nitrogen recovery efficiency, and degree of separation was investigated. Afterward, several functional properties of hydrolyzed collagen fractions including solubility, emulsification, foaming, and antioxidant properties were evaluated. The optimum ultrafiltration conditions for hydrolyzed collagen were temperature 25 °C, pH 6.5 and pressure 12 psi provided optimum membrane flux (3.4 L/m2.h) and nitrogen recovery efficiency (80.81%), and the smallest degree of separation (27.45%). The products after ultrafiltration were separated into two fractions, F1 (< 3 kDa), and F2 (3-5 kDa), with the volume of 10% and 90%, respectively. Both hydrolyzed collagen fractions were more than 96% soluble at pH below 8.0, where the F2 fraction dissolved better than F1. As pH was higher than 8.0, both fractions were almost completely dissolved. In addition, the emulsifying and foaming abilities of the F1 fraction were better than the F2. However, the F2 fraction was more resistant to oxidation with higher antioxidant activity. In conclusion, this research indicates that different fractions from hydrolyzed collagen from yellowfin tuna skin have various functional properties that could be applied in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

It is of great significance to search for efficient, renewable, biodegradable and economical membrane materials. Herein, we developed an organic-inorganic hybrid regenerated cellulose membrane (ZrO2/BCM) with excellent hydrophilic and anti-fouling properties. The membrane was prepared by introducing ZrO2 particles into an N-Methylmorpholine-N-oxide(NMMO)/bamboo cellulose(BC) solution system by the phase inversion method. The physi-chemical structure of the membranes were characterized based on thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The modified regenerated cellulose membrane has the excellent rejection of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and anti-fouling performance. The membrane flux of ZrO2/BCM is 321.49 (L/m2·h), and the rejection rate of BSA is 91.2%. Moreover, the membrane flux recovery rate after cleaning with deionized water was 90.6%. This new type of separation membrane prepared with green materials holds broad application potential in water purification and wastewater treatment.

Low temperature microfiltration (MF) is applied in dairy processing to achieve higher protein and microbiological quality ingredients and to support ingredient innovation; however, low temperature reduces hydrophobic interactions between casein proteins and increases the solubility of colloidal calcium phosphate, promoting reversible dissociation of micellar β-casein into the serum phase, and thus into permeate, during MF. Crosslinking of casein proteins using transglutaminase was studied as an approach to reduce the permeation of casein monomers, which typically results in reduced yield of protein in the retentate fraction. Two treatments (a) 5 °C/24 h (TA) and (b) 40 °C/90 min (TB), were applied to the feed before filtration at 5 °C, with a 0.1 µm membrane. Flux was high for TA treatment possibly due to the stabilising effect of transglutaminase on casein micelles. It is likely that formation of isopeptide bonds within and on the surface of micelles results in the micelles being less readily available for protein-protein and protein–membrane interactions, resulting in less resistance to membrane pores and flow passage, thereby conferring higher permeate flux. The results also showed that permeation of casein monomers into the permeate was significantly reduced after both enzymatic treatments as compared to control feed due to the reduced molecular mobility of soluble casein, mainly β-casein, caused by transglutaminase crosslinking.

Zeolitic Imidazole framework 8 (ZIF-8) was successfully prepared in an aqueous medium and then dissolved with concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 5% in polysulfone (PSF) to prepare an ultrafiltration membrane. ZIF-8 nanosized material uniformly distributed in the PSF membrane ultrafiltration membrane was prepared in a polar solvent of N,N'-dimethyl formamide (DMF) by phase inversion procedure. Significantly, ZIF-8 enhanced the membrane flux from 50.42 L/m2.h (PSF) to 83.65 L/m2.h at 100 Kpa, and the rejection of methyl blue and crystal violet dyes up to 95.1% and 89.65 %, respectively compared to the PSF membrane without ZIF-8, 41.08%, 46.32%. Wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle, and dead-end filtration experiment were carried out to characterize the morphology and performance of the prepared ZIF-8 and membranes. The hydrophilicity of the membrane was determined by a contact angle test between water and membrane. SEM was used to study the surface and the cross-sectional morphologies.

This research studied the enhancing effect on the nanofiltration composite (TFCNF) membrane of two non-ionic surfactants on a thin-film composite nanofiltration membrane (TFCNF) for calcite scale (CaCO3) inhibition in oilfield application to develop a multifunctional filtration system: nanofiltration, antiscalant, and scale inhibitors. The effectiveness of dodecyl phenol ethoxylate (DPE) and oleic acid ethoxylate (OAE) as novel scale inhibitors were studied using the dynamic method. Scaling tests on the membrane were performed to measure the scaling of the inhibited membrane with and without scale inhibitors for salt rejection, permeability, and flux decline. The results revealed that the TFCNF membrane flux decline was improved in the presence of scale inhibitors from 22% to about 15%. The rejection of the membrane scales increases from 72% for blank membranes, reaching 97.2% and 88% for both DPE and OAE, respectively. These confirmed that scale inhibitor DPE had superior anti-scaling properties against calcite deposits on TFCNF membranes. Inhibited scaled TFCNF membrane was characterized using environmental scanning electron (ESEM), FTIR, and XRD techniques. The results of the prepared TFCNF membrane extensively scaled by the calcite deposits were correlated to its morphology.

The separation and purification process of alkaloids faces great challenges of pollution, high energy consumption and low continuity. In this study, the effects of ceramic microfiltration (MF) membrane (membrane pore size of 0.50 μm, 0.20 μm, 0.05 μm) and organic ultrafiltration (UF) membrane (membrane molecular weight cut-off of 10 KDa and 1 KDa) on the separation and purification of Caulis sinomenii extract solution in pilot scale were studied. The cleaning effects of different cleaning methods (pure water, 1% HCl-NaOH, 1% sodium hypochlorite) were investigated. The experimental results indicated that 0.05 μm ceramic membrane and 1 kDa UF membrane have higher sinomenine hydrochloride (SH) permeabilities and total solids (TS) removal rates. The ceramic membrane was circulating cleaned by 1% sodium hypochlorite solution for 1 h; the membrane flux can be restored to more than 90% of the original, the membrane flux of 1 kDa UF membrane can be restored to 99.2% of the original by pure water washing. From the above study, the optimal technic parameters was determined in which 0.05 μm ceramic MF membrane and 1 kDa UF membrane were used to separate and purify the Caulis sinomenii extract solution to remove the invalid ingredients, and the two kinds of membranes were cleaned with 1% sodium hypochlorite solution and pure water, respectively, to keep satisfactory membrane fluxes. The study provided an environment-friendly alternative for the separation and purification of alkaloids in natural products, which has a good prospect for the industrial application.

Nanofiltration (NF) is a separation technology with broad application prospects. Membrane fouling is an important bottleneck-restricting technology development. In the past, we prepared a positively charged polyethyleneimine/trimesic acid (PEI/TMA) NF membrane with excellent performance. Inevitably, it also faces poor resistance to protein contamination. Improving the antifouling ability of the PEI/TMA membrane can be achieved by considering the hydrophilicity and chargeability of the membrane surface. In this work, sodium chloroacetate (ClCH2COONa) is used as a modifier and is grafted onto the membrane surface. Additionally, 0.5% ClCH2COONa and 10 h modification time are the best conditions. Compared with the original membrane (M0, 17.2 L m−2 h−1), the initial flux of the modified membrane (M0-e, 30 L m−2 h−1) was effectively increased. After filtering the bovine albumin (BSA) solution, the original membrane flux dropped by 47% and the modified membrane dropped by 6.2%. The modification greatly improved the antipollution performance of the PEI/TMA membrane.
