Limited data are available on how eggs are consumed in the typical American eating pattern and the contribution to usual intakes, diet quality and in meeting recommendations. The objectives of the present analysis included identifying how eggs are consumed within U.S. dietary patterns and how these patterns are associated with the usual intakes of shortfall nutrients and diet quality (Healthy Eating Index 2015) using data from the combined National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2001–2016. An additional objective included assessing the differences between egg consumers and egg non-consumers in nutrient intakes and nutrient adequacy. Several egg-containing dietary patterns were identified, and two egg patterns were associated with a greater diet quality compared to a no egg pattern (p < 0.0001). Most egg patterns identified were similar in diet quality scores when compared to the no egg pattern; however, the two egg patterns had lower diet quality scores. Egg consumption combined with a greater intake of total protein foods, seafood and plant protein, total vegetables, total fruit, whole fruit, whole grains and dairy foods, and a lower intake of refined grains and added sugars contributed to an improved diet quality, supporting that no one food is responsible for a healthy dietary pattern. Egg consumers demonstrated significantly higher intakes of dietary fiber, calcium, magnesium, potassium, total choline, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D and vitamin E when compared to egg non-consumers. A comparison of egg consumers and egg non-consumers found egg consumers had significantly less percentages of the population below the EAR for calcium, iron, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E. Similarly, the percentage of the population above the recommendations for potassium and choline were greater for egg consumers vs. egg non-consumers. In egg consumers, 24.4% of the population was above the AI for dietary choline when compared to 4.3% of egg non-consumers (p < 0.0001). Findings from the present analysis demonstrate that eggs and egg-containing foods can be an important part of a healthy dietary pattern when balanced accordingly with other nutrient-dense foods.

AbstractIn this case–control study, we aimed to investigate the association between major dietary patterns and fertility status in Iranian men. The study population included 400 newly diagnosed infertile men and 537 healthy individuals without a history of infertility in Yazd, Iran. Infertility was confirmed clinically, based on the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. Dietary intake was assessed using a 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and dietary patterns were determined based on a principal component analysis. Four major dietary patterns were found in this study, including healthy, Western, mixed, and traditional dietary patterns. After adjustments for potential confounders, men above the median of a healthy dietary pattern showed a reduced risk of infertility compared to those below the median (OR 0.52; 95% CI 0.33–0.83). In contrast, men with greater adherence to Western and mixed dietary patterns were more likely to be infertile (OR 2.66; 95% CI 1.70–4.17 and OR 2.82; 95% CI 1.75–4.56, respectively). Also, there was no significant association between the traditional dietary pattern and the odds of infertility. The present study suggests that greater adherence to a healthy dietary pattern may have an inverse association with the odds of infertility; however, Western and mixed dietary patterns may be associated with an increased risk of infertility.

This study examined the association between dietary patterns and the development of frailty during 4-, 8-, 12-year follow-up periods in the population-based Taiwan Study. We used the data of an elderly population aged 53 years and over (n = 3486) from four waves of the Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging. Frailty was identified by using the modified Fried criteria and the values were summed to derive a frailty score. We applied reduced rank regression to determine dietary patterns, which were divided into tertiles (healthy, general, and unhealthy dietary pattern). We used multinomial logistic regression models to assess the association between dietary patterns and the risk of frailty. The healthy dietary pattern was characterized by a higher intake of antioxidant drinks (tea), energy-rich foods (carbohydrates, e.g., rice, noodles), protein-rich foods (fish, meat, seafood, and eggs), and phytonutrient-rich foods (fruit and dark green vegetables). Compared with the healthy pattern, the unhealthy dietary pattern showed significant cross-sectional, short-term, medium-term, and long-term associations with a higher prevalence of frailty (odds ratios (OR) 2.74; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.94–3.87, OR 2.55; 95% CI 1.67–3.88, OR 1.66; 95% CI 1.07–2.57, and OR 2.35; 95% CI 1.27–4.34, respectively). Our findings support recommendations to increase the intake of antioxidant drinks, energy-rich foods, protein-rich foods, and phytonutrient-rich foods, which were associated with a non-frail status. This healthy dietary pattern can help prevent frailty over time in elderly people.

Abstract Objectives The incorporation of zeaxanthin rich wolfberry (Lycium barbarum) into a healthy dietary pattern may augment its antioxidant effects although evidence evaluating whole fruits is lacking. The objectives of this study are to (1) investigate the impact of dietary counselling, either with or without whole dried wolfberry on oxidative stress status in middle-aged and older Singaporean adults and (2) delineate underlying mechanisms by examining associations with the corresponding changes in carotenoids status. Methods In this 16-week, parallel design randomized controlled trial, 40 subjects (29 F, 11 M; aged 50 to 64 y) received dietary counselling to follow a healthy dietary pattern. Compared to the control group (CG, n = 18), the wolfberry group (WG, n = 22) additionally cooked and consumed 15 g/d whole dried wolfberry with their main meals. Biomarkers of oxidative stress (plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) by thiobarbituric acid reactive substance assay and 8-isoprostanes by ELISA) were measured at baseline and week 16. Plasma and dietary carotenoids analyzed by HPLC and 3-day food records respectively were measured at baseline, week 8 and week 16 while skin carotenoids status (SCS) by resonance Raman spectroscopy was assayed every 4 weeks. Results Plasma 8-isoprostanes showed a time effect (P &lt; 0.05), attributed to the marked decline in the WG only (WG: −19.0 ± 43.6 ng/L; CG: −7.7 ± 38.7 ng/L, mean ± SD) though no effect was observed for MDA. A significant interaction effect (P &lt; 0.001), driven by higher plasma zeaxanthin (WG: +0.08 ± 0.13 nmol/L; CG: −0.03 ± 0.05 nmol/L) and SCS (WG: +4242 ± 4938 a.u.; CG: +1713 ± 5921 a.u.) was observed in the WG with a marked increase evident from week 8 onwards although concentrations of the other plasma carotenoids were maintained. Moreover, the change value for plasma zeaxanthin in the WG was inversely associated with the corresponding changes in plasma 8-isoprostanes (−0.21 (−0.43, 0.00) ng/µmol, regression coefficient (95% CI); P = 0.05). This same association was absent in the CG. Conclusions Consuming wolfberry with a healthy dietary pattern attenuates oxidative stress in middle-aged and older adults and this may be attributed to the rich zeaxanthin content in wolfberry. Abstract Introduction It is well known that the prevalence of clinical and subclinical sleep issues is quite high, with a great economic and social burden on the society. As it is expected that the numbers of people suffering from clinical and subclinical sleep problems will increase in the coming years, new primary and/or complementary methods to improve and prevent poor sleep health across the population are urgently needed. In the current study, we aimed to conduct the largest investigation of diet and sleep health to date, through systematically examining the UK Biobank (UKB) data to find out whether diet quality and food groups play a role on sleep health. Methods This cross-sectional population-based study involved 502,494 participants. UKB food frequency and sleep questionnaires at baseline were used. Also, healthy diet, healthy sleep, and partial fibre intake scores were created. ANCOVA and regression models were used to examine the associations of healthy diet and dietary fibre intake scores with sleep health. Adjusted models included age, sex, BMI, and mental health symptomatology. Results We showed that both healthy diet and high partial fibre intake scores were associated with increased healthy sleep scores. Also, higher intakes of vegetables, fruits, fish, and unprocessed red meat were found to be associated with increased healthy sleep scores. On the other hand, processed meat intake was inversely associated with sleep health. Conclusion A healthy dietary pattern, and food groups (vegetables, fruits, fish, water) and nutrients (fibre) that are consumed as a part of a healthy dietary pattern were associated with better sleep health. Further work is needed to identify underlying mechanisms behind the impact of diet on sleep health. Background: Migraine is a chronic medical problem and sometimes progressive disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of headache. Nutritional factors can reduce and prevent the severity and frequency of migraine. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the relationship between major dietary patterns and disease severity among migraine patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 266 females (18 - 50 years old) who attend neurology clinics of Sina and Khatam Alanbia hospitals, and a professional headache clinic, both in Tehran, Iran, for episodic migraine diagnosis in 2016. The participants’ data was gathered using a general questionnaire and medical history. Dietary intake was assessed using a 147-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Anthropometric measurements were taken for all cases. visual analog scale (VAS) and migraine disability assessment (MIDAS) questionnaires were used by a neurologist for assessing migraine disability and pain severity, respectively. Also, principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify major dietary patterns. The association between dietary patterns and disease severity was evaluated using multinomial logistic regression. Results: Using the PCA, two major dietary patterns, including the healthy and unhealthy diet, were identified. More adherence to the healthy dietary pattern (high in fruits, fruit juices, and dried fruits, vegetables, whole grains, liquid oil, brains, beans, low-fat dairy, and white meat) was associated with a lower VAS score after adjusting for energy intake, BMI, water intake, and increased salt intake (OR = 1.82, 95% CI = 0.96 - 3.44, P-trend < 0.005). The intensity of migraine headache increased by 82% in the lowest adherence to this pattern compared to the most adherence. There was no significant association between healthy and unhealthy dietary patterns with MIDAS before and after controlling for confounding variables. Conclusions: This study showed that adherence to a healthy dietary pattern reduces the severity of pain in migraine patients. However, further studies are needed to evaluate the relationship between the unhealthy dietary pattern and the severity of migraine symptoms.

Incorporating zeaxanthin-rich wolfberry (Lycium barbarum) into a healthy dietary pattern may augment its antioxidant potential. The present 16-week, parallel design randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the impact of adhering to a healthy dietary pattern, either with or without whole dried wolfberry (15 g/d) on oxidative stress status (plasma malondialdehyde and 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α) in middle-aged and older adults. Changes to carotenoids status (plasma and skin carotenoids) and body composition were further evaluated to explore potential mechanisms which underlie the antioxidant properties of wolfberry. Plasma 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α, plasma zeaxanthin and skin carotenoids status were significantly raised in the wolfberry consuming group (n = 22; p < 0.05) compared to the control group which showed no changes (n = 18). Likewise in the wolfberry group only, inverse association was observed between the change values of plasma zeaxanthin and plasma 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α (−0.21 (−0.43, 0.00) ng/µmol, regression coefficient (95% CI); p = 0.05). Wolfberry consumption with a healthy dietary pattern may serve as a dietary strategy to attenuate lipid peroxidation among middle-aged and older adults who are at a heightened risk of oxidative stress induced age-related disorders. The antioxidant properties of wolfberry may be attributed to its rich zeaxanthin content.

Abstract Background Nutrition is a modifiable risk factor that plays an important role in the prevention or delaying of the onset of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Previous studies have focused on NAFLD and individual nutrients, which does not take into account combinations of food that are consumed. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between major dietary patterns and NAFLD. Methods This case–control study was conducted on 225 newly diagnosed NAFLD patients and 450 healthy controls. Usual dietary intake over the preceding year was assessed using a validated 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Major dietary patterns were determined by exploratory factor analysis. Results Three dietary patterns, including "western dietary pattern", "healthy dietary pattern", and "traditional dietary pattern" were identified. Subjects in the highest tertile of healthy dietary pattern scores had a lower odds ratio for NAFLD than those in the lowest tertile. Compared with those in the lowest tertile, people in the highest tertile of “western dietary pattern” scores had greater odds for NAFLD. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, “western dietary pattern” had a positive significant effect on NAFLD occurrence. In contrast, “healthy dietary pattern” was associated with a decreased risk of NAFLD. Furthermore, Higher consumption of the “traditional dietary pattern” was significantly associated with NAFLD, albeit in the crude model only. Conclusion This study indicated that healthy and western dietary patterns may be associated with the risk of NAFLD. The results can be used for developing interventions in order to promote healthy eating for the prevention of NAFLD.
