Snow has an important impact on forest ecosystems in mountainous areas. In this study, we developed 14 tree-ring-width chronologies of Schrenk spruce (Picea schrenkiana Fisch. et Mey.) for the Ili-Balkhash Basin (IBB), Central Asia. We analyzed the response of radial growth to temperature, precipitation and snow parameters. The results show that previous winter and current summer precipitation have an important influence on the radial growth of P. schrenkiana. Further, we find spatially inhomogeneous effects of snow on subsequent growing-season tree growth in IBB. The radial growth response of P. schrenkiana to snow shows a weak–strong–weak trend from west to east across the Ili-Balkhash Basin. This spatial difference is mainly related to precipitation, as snow has little effect on tree growth in regions that receive more precipitation. Thus, winter snow has an important influence on the radial growth of trees in regions that receive limited amounts of precipitation.

Trend anomaly detection is the practice of comparing and analyzing current and historical data trends to detect real-time abnormalities in online industrial data-streams. It has the advantages of tracking a concept drift automatically and predicting trend changes in the shortest time, making it important both for algorithmic research and industry. However, industrial data streams contain considerable noise that interferes with detecting weak anomalies. In this paper, the fastest detection algorithm “sliding nesting” is adopted. It is based on calculating the data weight in each window by applying variable weights, while maintaining the method of trend-effective integration accumulation. The new algorithm changes the traditional calculation method of the trend anomaly detection score, which calculates the score in a short window. This algorithm, SNWFD–DS, can detect weak trend abnormalities in the presence of noise interference. Compared with other methods, it has significant advantages. An on-site oil drilling data test shows that this method can significantly reduce delays compared with other methods and can improve the detection accuracy of weak trend anomalies under noise interference.

A systematic search of the PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, and Web of Science databases was conducted to investigate the risk of urinary bladder cancer (BC) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We identified 168 articles, of which 11 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Our analysis included 165,176 patients with IBD, 491 of whom had BC. Overall, the pooled standardized incidence ratio (SIR) was 0.99 (95% CI: 0.87–1.12; I2 = 0%). Further subgroup analysis showed that BC risk was neither statistically higher for Crohn's disease (CD) (SIR: 1.19; 95% CI: 0.94–1.44; I2 = 0%) nor for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) (SIR: 0.92; 95% CI: 0.77–1.06; I2 = 0%). In the analysis of two case-control studies providing data on BC in UC and CD combined, IBD patients seemed to have a higher risk of BC than non-IBD patients (relative risk: 1.25; 95% CI: 0.77–2.03; I2 = 37.5%). Although the overall risk of BC was not significantly increased among patients with IBD, there was a weak trend for the risk to be elevated in CD patients, indicating marginal significance. These findings may primarily be explained by the opposite effects of smoking on CD and UC as well as the immunosuppressive drugs these patients often take.

Plants need water and energy for their growth and reproduction. However, how water and energy availability influence dryland plant diversity along the aridity gradient in water-limited regions is still lacking. Hence, quantitative analyses were conducted to evaluate the relative importance of water and energy to dryland plant diversity based on 1039 quadrats across 184 sites in China’s dryland. The results indicated that water availability and the water–energy interaction were pivotal to plant diversity in the entire dryland and consistent with the predictions of the water–energy dynamic hypothesis. The predominance of water limitation on dryland plant diversity showed a weak trend with decreasing aridity, while the effects of energy on plants were found to be significant in mesic regions. Moreover, the responses of different plant lifeforms to water and energy were found to vary along the aridity gradient. In conclusion, the study will enrich the limited knowledge about the effects of water and energy on plant diversity (overall plants and different lifeforms) in the dryland of China along the aridity gradient.

Purpose One of the main pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is inflammation, which has been associated with lymphadenopathy. Intrapulmonary lymph nodes can be identified on CT as perifissural nodules (PFN). We investigated the association between the number and size of PFNs and measures of COPD severity. Materials and Methods CT images were obtained from COPDGene. 50 subjects were randomly selected per GOLD stage (0 to 4), GOLD-unclassified, and never-smoker groups and allocated to either “Healthy,” “Mild,” or “Moderate/severe” groups. 26/350 (7.4%) subjects had missing images and were excluded. Supported by computer-aided detection, a trained researcher prelocated non-calcified opacities larger than 3 mm in diameter. Included lung opacities were classified independently by two radiologists as either “PFN,” “not a PFN,” “calcified,” or “not a nodule”; disagreements were arbitrated by a third radiologist. Ordinal logistic regression was performed as the main statistical test. Results A total of 592 opacities were included in the observer study. A total of 163/592 classifications (27.5%) required arbitration. A total of 17/592 opacities (2.9%) were excluded from the analysis because they were not considered nodular, were calcified, or all three radiologists disagreed. A total of 366/575 accepted nodules (63.7%) were considered PFNs. A maximum of 10 PFNs were found in one image; 154/324 (47.5%) contained no PFNs. The number of PFNs per subject did not differ between COPD severity groups (p = 0.50). PFN short-axis diameter could significantly distinguish between the Mild and Moderate/severe groups, but not between the Healthy and Mild groups (p = 0.021). Conclusions There is no relationship between PFN count and COPD severity. There may be a weak trend of larger intrapulmonary lymph nodes among patients with more advanced stages of COPD.

Context. While exoplanets are now routinely detected, the detection of small bodies in extrasolar systems remains challenging. Since the discovery of sporadic events, which are interpreted to be exocomets (falling evaporating bodies) around β Pic in the early 1980s, only ∼20 stars have been reported to host exocomet-like events. Aims. We aim to expand the sample of known exocomet-host stars, as well as to monitor the hot-gas environment around stars with previously known exocometary activity. Methods. We have obtained high-resolution optical spectra of a heterogeneous sample of 117 main-sequence stars in the spectral type range from B8 to G8. The data were collected in 14 observing campaigns over the course of two years from both hemispheres. We analysed the Ca II K&H and Na I D lines in order to search for non-photospheric absorptions that originated in the circumstellar environment and for variable events that could be caused by the outgassing of exocomet-like bodies. Results. We detected non-photospheric absorptions towards 50% of the sample, thus attributing a circumstellar origin to half of the detections (i.e. 26% of the sample). Hot circumstellar gas was detected in the metallic lines inspected via narrow stable absorptions and/or variable blue- and red-shifted absorption events. Such variable events were found in 18 stars in the Ca II and/or Na I lines; six of them are reported in the context of this work for the first time. In some cases, the variations we report in the Ca II K line are similar to those observed in β Pic. While we do not find a significant trend in the age or location of the stars, we do find that the probability of finding CS gas in stars with larger v sin i is higher. We also find a weak trend with the presence of near-infrared excess and with anomalous (λ Boo-like) abundances, but this would require confirmation by expanding the sample.

The development of transport infrastructure is a key element for increasing competitiveness, as it reduces the distance effect and freight transport costs, allowing the generation of efficiencies in market integration. This descriptive study uses a comparative methodology, taking as variables the indicators of global competitiveness of the member countries of the Pacific Alliance during the period 2007-2016. The analysis of the results shows a weak trend in the infrastructure development of the Pacific Alliance group and a notable asymmetry among the member countries. There is a need for an individual strategy in each country that is in line with the objectives of trade integration in Asia. Another finding suggests that the achievement of better indicators depends on other significant variables and on the way in which the costs of transport infrastructure investments are passed on to agents who move freight.

Background & Aims: In 2009, the Danish Government instituted “Fast Track Clinical Pathways” (FTCP) to accelerate diagnosis and treatment of cancers including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We examined how the implementation of FTCP affected the time from referral to diagnosis and treatment as well as the patient survival.Methods: 309 consecutive patients with suspected HCC were included, 79 referred during the period 2007- 2008 (before FTCP) and 230 during 2009-2011. Of those, 271 (88%) were diagnosed with HCC and 161 (60%) had cirrhosis, in most cases caused by alcohol.Results: The time from referral to the first visit was reduced from a mean 16.4 (11.5) to 5.4 (6) days (p<0.001) and the time from the first visit to the Multidisciplinary Tumour Conference (MDT) treatment decision from 34.9 (27.9) to 16.1 (14.4) days (p<0.001). The total time from referral to treatment was reduced from 53.2 (37.9) to 35.9 (23.1) days (p<0.001). There was a weak trend of improved survival after FTCP: 231 (147-368)vs. 293 (227-396) days (p=0.11).Conclusions: The implementation of FTCP reduced the total time from referral to treatment by three weeks; however, without significant effects on overall mortality. While shortened waiting time is a comfort for the patient, it remains to be elucidated whether it will change the prognosis.
