ABSTRACTThe Macroscopic, histological and immunohistochemical aspects of lung acinar adenocarcinoma and the presence of nodules in the abdominal cavity of an adult female bovine are reported. In the necropsy analysis samples were collected from the: lung, heart, spleen, liver, pancreas, kidney, uterus, intestine, brain, and from nodules found in the lung and abdominal cavity, which were routinely processed to be stained by hematoxylin-eosin and for an immunohistochemistry exam with the antibodies: cytokeratin (dilution 1:200 μL) and vimentin (dilution 1:1000 μL). The histopathological examination revealed neoplastic epithelial cells with acini formation. The immunohistochemical examination of the tumor cells showed positive marking for cytokeratin and the absence of marking for vimentin. According to anatomical, morphological, and histopathological findings, as well as the result of the immunohistochemical examination, the tumor was characterized as lung acinar adenocarcinoma.

Abstract Context.—Displacement of epithelial cells (DE) in the breast may occur after various types of needling procedures. Objective.—To determine if specific lesions or entities in the breast are more prone to displacement than others. Design.—A review of our computer files from January 1994 to June 2004 yielded 53 cases with DE. Clinical information, including the age of the patient, specific reason for the biopsy, and type of biopsy, was gathered. Histologic review of all hematoxylin-eosin–stained slides (core biopsies and excisions) was performed. Results.—Needling procedures included 1 or more of the following: ultrasound-guided core biopsy (24 cases), mammotome core biopsies (16), fine-needle aspiration (8), anesthetic injection (3), suture placement (5), and wire localization (1). Procedures were performed in order to investigate a mass (34 cases), calcifications (15), both (3), or nipple discharge (1). The time from needling to surgical procedure yielding a specimen with DE ranged from minutes to 47 days. Displacement of epithelial cells occurred in the following sites: biopsy tract (42 cases), lymphatic channels (5), both biopsy tract and lymphatic channels (4), and breast stroma (2). The diagnoses included intraductal papilloma (6 cases) and intraductal carcinoma (DCIS) (45; 15 with invasive carcinoma). The remaining 2 cases were invasive carcinoma (colloid and papillary types) devoid of DCIS. Of the DCIS cases, either pure or with invasive carcinoma, the pattern was micropapillary in 23, intraductal papilloma involved by DCIS in 32, and both features in 12. The remaining 2 cases of DCIS included comedo DCIS and cribriform DCIS involving a cyst. Conclusions.—With the exception of 3 cases, DE was associated with 1 or more underlying papillary lesions, including pure intraductal papilloma, DCIS involving intraductal papilloma, micropapillary DCIS, and invasive carcinoma. Other etiologies included mucinous carcinoma and cystic lesions, with only 1 case in which a mechanism for DE could not be postulated.

Quantification of retinal atrophy, caused by therapeutics and/or light, by manual measurement of retinal layers is labor intensive and time-consuming. In this study, we explored the role of deep learning (DL) in automating the assessment of retinal atrophy, particularly of the outer and inner nuclear layers, in rats. Herein, we report our experience creating and employing a hybrid approach, which combines conventional image processing and DL to quantify rodent retinal atrophy. Utilizing a DL approach based upon the VGG16 model architecture, models were trained, tested, and validated using 10,746 image patches scanned from whole slide images (WSIs) of hematoxylin-eosin stained rodent retina. The accuracy of this computational method was validated using pathologist annotated WSIs throughout and used to separately quantify the thickness of the outer and inner nuclear layers of the retina. Our results show that DL can facilitate the evaluation of therapeutic and/or light-induced atrophy, particularly of the outer retina, efficiently in rodents. In addition, this study provides a template which can be used to train, validate, and analyze the results of toxicologic pathology DL models across different animal species used in preclinical efficacy and safety studies.

Rainbow watersnake is a snake that can be found in ponds, has a relatively medium body, a maximum length of 80 cm, generally between 50-60 cm, small-headed, a rather large belly, and short-tailed. The aim of this study is to determine the structure of the histology of the lungs of watersnake (Enhydris enhydris). This study used a sample of 3 watersnakes (Enhydris enhydris) with a body length of ± 50 cm. This study conducted a micro technical method with hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. Data obtained from the results of this study were analyzed descriptively and presented in the form of images. Macroscopic observations of the warp in snakes are long, most of the trachea attaches to the warp, and there are water sacs or swimming pouches at the tip of the warp, as well as the histological features of the snakes' warp, alveolar ducts, alveolar sac and alveoli, the histological structure of the lungs in watersnakes (Enhydris enhydris) consist of type 1 alveoli epithelial cells, type 2 alveoli cells, muscle bundles, connective tissue, capillary vessels, and macrophage cells. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the histological structure of the watersnake (Enhydris enhydris) lung is different from the histological structure of the reptile function in general. In the lungs of watersnakes (Enhydris enhydris) only consists of alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs, alveoli, and the presence of water sacs at the ends of the lungs.

Bovine fetal tracheal organ cultures were infected with a field strain of IBR virus and the effect of the virus was assessed by observing ciliary activity and cytopathic changes in unstained, hematoxylin-eosin-stained, and fluorescent-labeled antibody preparations of the culture system. The virus was quantitated in bovine fetal kidney cell cultures. The IBR virus was first detected in infected organ cultures at 8–12 h postinoculation and persisted for at least 23 days. A decrease in ciliary activity was not observed until 48 h postinoculation, at the same time that the first signs of cytopathic effect was seen in the unstained cultures. The viral infection first appeared as discrete foci of rounded cells on the epithelial surface, but then spread from cell to cell beneath the ciliated epithelial cells leading to early degeneration of the non-ciliated epithelial cells and microvesiculation which eventually resulted in a massive sloughing of the whole epithelial layer. The virus was not limited to the epithelial layer but infected a variety of cell types among the submucosal and connective tissue components of the organ cultures.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to analyze the changes that occur in rats with experimental endometriosis after treatment with copaiba oil. METHODS: Experimental endometriosis was induced in rats. The experimental group received copaiba oil (Copaiferalangsdorffii) orally (0.63 mg/day), and the control group received a 0.9% sodium chloride solution orally (1 ml/100 g of body weight/day). Both groups were treated with gavage for 14 days. After this period, the animals were euthanized, and the implant volume was calculated. The autologous transplants were removed, dyed with hematoxylin-eosin, and analyzed by light microscopy. RESULTS: The average final volumes were significantly different between the groups (p=0.007). There was a significant increase (p=0.012) between the initial and final volumes in the control group, whereas treatment with Copaiferalangsdorffii caused a marked reduction in endometrial growth over time (p=0.016). Histologically, 6/11 (55.00%) rats in the experimental group had a well-preserved epithelial layer, and 3 (45.00%) had mildly preserved epithelium. The control group had seven cases (58.30%) of well-preserved epithelial cells and five cases (41.70%) of mildly preserved epithelial cells (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Copaiba oil (Copaiferalangsdorffii) appears to be a promising alternative treatment for endometriosis.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of probiotic supplementation associated to different levels of crude protein (CP) on the count of intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) in the duodenum of meat quails. A total of 2304 quails were distributed in a completely randomized design in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme (with and without probiotic and four levels of CP - 15, 20, 25 and 30%), with two replicates per treatment in two experimental periods, in a total of 32 experimental units. At seven days old, two quails from each experimental unit were euthanized to harvest the duodenum segment. Semi-serial 7-μm histological sections were obtained, which were subsequently stained with hematoxylin-eosin to perform the IEL count. For the calculation, first 2500 epithelial cells were counted from the mucosa of each animal, and then the IELs present between these cells were counted, with the results expressed in amounts of IELs/100 epithelial cells. No differences were found in the IEL count among the treatments. Under the experimental conditions, it can be concluded that the use of probiotic associated to different levels of CP supplementation does not alter the IEL count in the duodenum of meat quails.

It is well known that epithelial hyperplasia (benign hypertrophy) is common in the aging prostate of dogs and man. In contrast, little evidence is available for abnormal epithelial cell growth in seminal vesicles of aging animals. Recently, enlarged seminal vesicles were reported in senescent mice, however, that enlargement resulted from increased storage of secretion in the lumen and occurred concomitant to epithelial hypoplasia in that species.The present study is concerned with electron microscopic observations of changes occurring in the pseudostratified epithelium of the seminal vescles of aging rats. Special attention is given to certain non-epithelial cells which have entered the epithelial layer.

The present study demonstrates the ultrastructure of the gingival epithelium of the pig tail monkey (Macaca nemestrina). Specimens were taken from lingual and facial gingival surfaces and fixed in Dalton's chrome osmium solution (pH 7.6) for 1 hr, dehydrated, and then embedded in Epon 812.Tonofibrils are variable in number and structure according to the different region or location of the gingival epithelial cells, the main orientation of which is parallel to the long axis of the cells. The cytoplasm of the basal epithelial cells contains a great number of tonofilaments and numerous mitochondria. The basement membrane is 300 to 400 A thick. In the cells of stratum spinosum, the tonofibrils are densely packed and increased in number (fig. 1 and 3). They seem to take on a somewhat concentric arrangement around the nucleus. The filaments may occur scattered as thin fibrils in the cytoplasm or they may be arranged in bundles of different thickness. The filaments have a diameter about 50 A. In the stratum granulosum, the cells gradually become flatted, the tonofibrils are usually thin, and the individual tonofilaments are clearly distinguishable (fig. 2). The mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum are seldom seen in these superficial cell layers.

To learn more of the nature and origin of alcoholic hyalin (AH), 15 liver biopsy specimens from patients with alcoholic hepatitis were studied in detail.AH was found not only in hepatocytes but also in ductular cells (Figs. 1 and 2), although in the latter location only rarely. The bulk of AH consisted of a randomly oriented network of closely packed filaments measuring about 150 Å in width. Bundles of filaments smaller in diameter (40-90 Å) were observed along the periphery of the main mass (Fig. 1), often surrounding it in a rim-like fashion. Fine filaments were also found close to the nucleus in both hepatocytes and biliary epithelial cells, the latter even though characteristic AH was not present (Figs. 3 and 4). Dispersed among the larger filaments were glycogen, RNA particles and profiles of endoplasmic reticulum. Dilated cisternae of endoplasmic reticulum were often conspicuous around the periphery of the AH mass. A limiting membrane was not observed.
