The research is supported by the RA MES State Committee of Science, within the framework of the joint Armenian-Russian research project ? 15??-16 At present, multicultural education has become a trend ofthe times. The development of the competent and effective methodology for its implementation is an urgent necessity. This problem is acute not only in multinational countries, but also in mono national states, like Armenia, because the absence of a multicultural society leads to psychological barriers in the implementation of the dialogue of cultures, in intercultural and cross-cultural communication.

В условиях динамичного развития поликультурного общества, а также ускорившейся глобализации и взаимопроникновения культур народов практическую значимость приобретают исследования страноведческой и лингвокультурной направленности. Фразеологизмы используются в речи всех слоев населения, они связаны с повседневными заботами людей. На формирование этнонимов повлияла история развития народов, их традиции, обычаи и культура. Таким образом, фразеологизмы с этнонимами отражают национальный менталитет, их изучение не теряет своей актуальности. В данной статье рассмотрены проблемы языковой репрезентации ценностного отношения к соседним народам, проанализированы особенности фразеологизмов русского, английского, французского, немецкого и чувашского языков. Практическим материалом исследования являются фразеологизмы и этнонимы, используемые носителями русского, английского, французского, немецкого и чувашского языков. Анализ отобранных фразеологизмов с национальным компонентом показал, что их коннотативная окраска различна. На ее формирование повлияли различные экономические, политические и культурные события. Приведены примеры, отражающие негативное восприятие соседних народов. Незначительная часть рассмотренных фразеологизмов имеет позитивный смысл. В статье рассматриваются причины формирования некоторых фразеологизмов с этнонимами на конкретных примерах. Подобное исследование может найти свое применение в теории межкультурной коммуникации, так как оно является необходимым для студентов, изучающих иностранные языки. In the context of the dynamic development of a multicultural society, the process of globalization, and the interpenetration of cultures of peoples, the research of cross-cultural and linguistic orientation becomes of practical importance. Phraseological units are used in the speech of all segments of the population, they are related to the daily concerns of people. The formation of ethnonyms was influenced by the history of peoples’ development, their traditions, customs and culture. Thus, phraseo-logical units with ethnonyms reflect the national mentality and their study is still relevant. The article describes the problems of language representation of attitudes towards neighboring nations, analyzed the peculiarities of Russian, English, French, German and Chuvash idioms with ethnonyms used by native speakers. The analysis demonstrated that the connotation of the idioms is different. Various economic, political and cultural factors influenced it. The article provides some examples of negative attitude to neighboring nations. Some of the analyzed idioms are characterized by positive connotation. This article also considers the reasons for the formation of some idioms with ethnonyms. The results of the study can be employed in the theory of intercultural communication, since it is essential for foreign language learners.

In this introductory article the development of ideas on cultural bias in tests since the sixties is briefly reviewed and three approaches are mentioned. A distinction is made between the tradition of culture fair use of tests that is directed more towards selection in a multicultural society and the tradition of cross-cultural comparison that is concerned more with theoretical questions about cultural differences in behavior. The concerns of the former tradition have formed the main impetus for the development of psychometric analysis techniques. It is argued that some key problems of bias cannot be solved by further sophistication of statistical procedures, suggesting that a broadening of perspective in the field of bias analysis is desirable. Directions in which this can be achieved are indicated.

Religious education which is taught in schools has a significant role in forming religious exclusivism and inclusivism, especially in Indonesia. It influences student’s views on others. It also depends on the way those religion educations taught. There is also a need to have more efforts to bring the idea of interfaith dialogue into educational system including in higher educational level. There are some educational institutions which already involved in inter-faith dialogue in their curriculum such as the CRCS (Center for Religious and Cross Cultural Studies) and the ICRS (Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies) at Gadjah Mada University. However, the number of primary educational institutions which involves interfaith dialogue is still limited. This work suggests that, for today’s situation in Indonesian multicultural society, a need for reforming religion education curriculum in primary education is emerging. To make interfaith dialogue real in schools, the Ministry of Education in collaboration with Ministry of Religious Affairs is in a front line to arrange a new curriculum on religious education to be more pluralistic and affirm religious diversity in Indonesia including multi-religious education or inter religious education. Theoretical and practical development of the problem of students’ adaptation in a foreign language and multicultural society is one of the key problems of the academic mobility development of the individual throughout life. The need to solve this problem is determined by the socio-cultural dynamics of education development in the context of its global shifts, transformations, and systemic changes. The purpose of the article is to conduct a theoretical analysis of the problem of students' adaptation in the foreign language and multicultural society of the metropolis. The article deals with the problem of cross-cultural adaptation of foreign students in Russian universities to the foreign language and multicultural social medium of the metropolis. The phenomenon of cross-cultural adaptation is studied on an interdisciplinary basis. The authors consider the theoretical approaches to the study of various aspects of cross-cultural adaptation of a person to a foreign language and multicultural society, as well as analyze the educational opportunities and potential of intercultural interaction based on the dialogue of cultures as a mechanism underlying the process of adaptation of students in the foreign language and multicultural society of the metropolis. According to the authors, the success of foreign students’ education is also determined by their readiness to accept the entire cultural diversity of the foreign-speaking world and foreign language culture, as well as their tolerant attitude toward them. The article highlights and characterizes the main directions and specific content of students’ adaptation to foreign language and multicultural society. The authors conclude that cross-cultural adaptation can be an effective way for foreign students to enter the new socio-cultural conditions of the foreign language and multicultural society of the metropolis.

The goal of this research lies in analyzing the essence and problems of the genesis of multiculturalism and its varieties, factors of crisis in its development, and overcoming the crisis situation in a broad ethical-philosophical context. The author demonstrates that the construction of multicultural society should be based not on a limited understanding of culture as a set of religious statutes, ethnic norms, customs and traditions, but on the philosophical conceptualization of culture as a system that forms profound values, the crucial of which is justice. Special attention is given to substantiation of the categories of “social justice” and “law”, which manifest as the essential grounds of a modern multicultural society. It is demonstrated that social justice is the determining basis for the development of modern multicultural societies, i.e. the necessary condition for harmonious coexistence of individuals, groups and society as a whole. The conclusion is made that on the one hand, the globalization processes strengthen the integration, forming a single sociocultural space, while on the other hand, complicate the adaptation of ethnic cultures and their representatives, which generates tension in cross-cultural interaction, as well as inclusion and positive reliance on social justice as the fundamental value of any society allows finding the ethical measure in regulation of issues emerging in modern multicultural societies.

This article examines the nature and limits of the existing cross-cultural counseling discourses in order to search for a more culturally sensitive cross-cultural counseling approach. The authors pinpoint the inherent cultural deficiencies of the existing modification-based cross-cultural counseling approaches and advocate that the cross-cultural counseling process should be an inter-subjective interaction between the counselors and counselees, both of whom are products of their own culture. Cross-cultural counseling therefore should be seen as a contextualized cultural activity which requires the open-mindedness and sensitivity of the practitioners to the cultural influence of both their clients and themselves.

In southeast and east Asia, terrorism is not new. A number of the region's nations have had to deal with full scale insurgencies of their own. The region contains a heady mix of core US allies, fledgling democracies and an emerging superpower. Many of these countries were themselves being challenged by militant Islamists. To what extent have regional journalists been influenced by American ideas and definitions in its 'war on terror'? This article considers how Osama bin Laden's media event was reported in the English language press of five Asian states: China (an authoritarian non-sectarian state with a flickering Muslim insurgency); Malaysia (a democractic multicultural society with an Islamic majority); the Philipines (a democractic former US protectorate with a Muslim insurgency); Singapore (a one-party city state, which has been targeted by al Qaeda offshoots); and Thailand (a never colonised democracy with a restive Muslim majority).

Successful diet counseling is dependent on culturally sensitive communication strategies. Health care practitioners can improve cross-cultural counseling through a four-step process. First, they must become familiar with their own cultural heritages. Second, they must become acquainted with the cultural background of each client. Third, through an in-depth cross-cultural interview, they must establish the client's cultural background, food habit adapta tions made in the United States, and personal preferences. Fourth, they must modify diets based on unbiased analysis of the dietary data. The best chance for compliance occurs when diets are modified with consideration for client's cultural and personal preferences.
