In this chapter, a general theoretical model is proposed that links learners’ satisfaction and learners’ value of e-learning systems in order to assess learners’ perceived effectiveness of such systems. The central research question in this study is: Is there a relationship between learners’ perceived satisfaction with e-learning systems and learners’ perceived value for learners’ perceived effectiveness of e-learning systems? The significance of the value construct in the context of e-learning systems has never been evaluated. How the value of e-learning systems relates to other constructs, such as satisfaction with e-learning systems and ultimately whether the value of e-learning systems can be used to indicate learners’ perceived IS effectiveness remains open. In this chapter, a general conceptual model or framework is proposed to address this phenomenon in the context of e-learning systems. The proposed model or framework will provide procedures to identify and measure the key constructs (satisfaction with e-learning systems, value of e-learning systems, and effectiveness of e-learning systems). This chapter also defines precisely the individual characteristics and four major dimensions (categories) for evaluating value of e-learning systems and satisfaction with e-learning systems based on comprehensive literature reviewed in Chapters II and III. Additionally, this chapter proposes five specific research questions that are addressed in Chapter VII. Two additional specific research questions are proposed in Chapters V and VI.

Purpose This paper aims to develop a conceptual model for examining the development of integrated reporting, relate the articles in this Meditari Accountancy Research special issue on integrated reporting to the model and identify areas for future research. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses a narrative/discursive style to summarise key findings from the articles in the special issue and develop a normative research agenda. Findings The findings of the prior literature, as well as the articles in this special issue, support the conceptual model developed in this paper. This new conceptual model can be used in multiple ways. Originality/value The special issue draws on some of the latest developments in integrated reporting from multiple jurisdictions. Different theoretical frameworks and methodologies, coupled with primary evidence on integrated reporting, construct a pluralistic assessment of integrated reporting, which can be used as a basis for future research. The new conceptual model developed in this paper can be used as an organising framework; a way of understanding and thinking about the various influences; a way of identifying additional factors to control for in a study; and/or a way of identifying new, interesting and underexplored research questions.

These selected excerpts from a conversation now running nearly a quarter-century about The American Intellectual Tradition: A Sourcebook exemplify the efforts made by specialists in American intellectual history to decide just what constitutes the core of their field. An anthology designed for undergraduates has practical limitations, to be sure, that prevent its table of contents from ever serving as a complete map of a field. Specific research questions, not arguments over canons, properly remain the deepest center of gravity of any cohort of scholars. But assignments to students are one important indicator of what scholar–teachers take to be important, and these assignments are not unrelated to choices these same individuals make about the topics of their monographic contributions. Hence the lively correspondence that my coeditor, Charles Capper, and I have carried on with dozens of colleagues concerning the six editions of the only collection of sources for this field currently in print offers a window on how American intellectual history has changed in the last generation and what are its current directions.

This study investigated the role of cross-linguistic similarity in the acquisition of Russian initial stop contrasts by Chinese learners, addressing two specific research questions: (1) How similar are Russian voiced stops to Mandarin stops for Chinese learners? (2) How can the speech learning model (SLM) be applied to account for the acquisition of Russian initial stop contrasts by Chinese learners? Regarding the first question, a hypothesis was proposed that Russian voiced stops could be regarded as dissimilar ‘new’ sounds by Chinese learners, as judged by three commonly adopted methods: IPA comparison, acoustic difference, and feature redeployment. The results of the perceptual assimilation task, however, disconfirmed this hypothesis, as Russian voiced stops were perceived as being highly similar to the sounds of Mandarin voiceless unaspirated stops. According to SLM, perceptually similar second language (L2) sounds are difficult to acquire; hence, a corresponding hypothesis was advanced in relation to the second question; namely, that the acquisition of Russian initial stop contrasts could be challenging for Chinese learners. This hypothesis was supported by the results of the perceptual discrimination and the production tests. These findings corroborated SLM regarding the difficulty in acquiring L2 sounds that are perceptually similar to their first language (L1) counterparts, while posing challenges to the hypothesis that Russian voiced stops could be dissimilar ‘new’ sounds for Chinese learners, as predicted by the three methods. The results indicated that perceived cross-linguistic similarity plays a key role in L2 phonetic acquisition. However, the degree of perceived similarity cannot always be accurately deduced solely through the three methods, at least not in the case of stops.

Corpus linguistics has transformed the landscape of empirical research on languages in recent decades. The proliferation of corpus technology has enabled researchers worldwide to conduct research in their own geographical locations with few hindrances. It has become increasingly commonplace for researchers to compile their own corpora for specific research questions or to conduct research on the basis of corpora constructed by other researchers. Moreover, corpus linguistics has become accessible to language teachers, providing ideas, instructions and new opportunities to apply corpus techniques, corpus-based materials and activities in their classrooms (e.g., Bennett 2010; Reppen 2010; Scheffler 2011).

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe how the classic Delphi method can be adapted and structured to ensure that specific research questions are clearly addressed. Design/methodology/approach – As part of a larger mixed method project, a modified Delphi study was undertaken to explore factors influencing publication and non-publication of mental health nursing research. Findings – This paper reports brief findings from the Delphi study. However, its main focus is the methodological issues arising from the Delphi method. Research limitations/implications – The paper argues that the classic Delphi method can be adapted and structured to ensure that specific research questions are able to be clearly answered. The adaptations are pragmatic in approach and in keeping with the general principles underpinning the Delphi method, while successfully addressing the problems of attrition and previous criticism of homogenous panels. Originality/value – This paper offers some practical solutions to issue arising from undertaking research using the Delphi method.

Introduction Lower limb amputation is a life-changing event for patients and can be associated with high mortality and morbidity rates. Research into this critical part of vascular surgery is limited. The Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland (VSGBI) in partnership with the James Lind Alliance (JLA) process, aimed to identify and develop key research priorities for amputation. Methods A modified JLA Priority Setting Partnership was undertaken, encompassing all vascular practice. Two separate Delphi processes to identify research topics were undertaken with healthcare professionals, patients and carers, led by the VSGBI. The priorities were then ranked by the same participants and amalgamated to produce a list for final prioritisation. The final consensus meeting was attended by patients, carers and healthcare professionals from a variety of backgrounds involved in the care of people with amputation. Using a nominal group technique, the top ten research priorities were identified. Results A total of 481 clinicians submitted 1231 research questions relating to vascular surgery in general. 63 amputation-specific research questions were combined into 5 final clinical questions. 373 patients or carers submitted 582 research questions related to vascular surgery in general. Nine amputation-specific research questions were identified after combining similar questions. Amalgamating both the clinician and patient questions, 12 questions were discussed at the final prioritisation meeting and the top 10 identified. These related to amputation prevention, supporting rehabilitation, improving clinical outcomes following amputation (preventing/treating pain including phantom limb pain and improving wound healing) and research into information provision for patients undergoing amputation. Conclusion The top 10 research priority areas in vascular amputation provide guidance for researchers, clinicians, and funders on the direction of future research questions that are important to both healthcare professionals and patients.

The Southern Colorado River Basin context published in 1999 offered a remarkable overview of Mesa Verde regional archaeology. It reviewed the available research for each main period of occupation and, at the end of each summary, outlined some of the most important questions for future research. For the late Basketmaker and early Pueblo periods many of those research questions have been addressed or are now outdated. Current questions are not just about research, but also about how to balance long-term heritage management goals with site-specific research. The accelerating loss of cultural landscape to irrigated fields, energy development, and the expansion of country homes requires us to both broaden the scope of our preservation planning and the scale of our research questions to the landscape level. In this review I propose changes to the extent and nature of the Southern Colorado River Basin context area, as well as offer amendments to the previous period chronologies based on what we have learned. Lastly, I suggest an array of research themes for future work. Although this is not a state-approved context, it is offered as a challenge to us—whether we represent the state, a federal agency, a university, or a CRM firm—to think big about the research we do in the greater Mesa Verde region.

Soft System Methodology (SSM) is common guidance to conceptualise Knowledge Management (KM) model since its benefit to handle complex situations. This study highlights SSM implementation on KM conceptual model using Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to produce insights about current implementation and promising chances in the future. This study also concerns on KM conceptual models as created without certain features in many case studies. Many various interpretation can arise to understand how system should work. This situation affected more spending time to validate KM conceptual model with stakeholders. Using SLR, this study criticises the importance of features as provided in eligible articles. Out of 144 articles from 2009 until 2019 as delivered from Scopus query, this study selected 12 articles about SSM on KM. It classified them into several criteria: published year, sector, and related KM life cycle. By mapping them to solve research questions, this study promoted actors, activities, and sequential order of activities as recommended features. By implementing them, KM conceptual model creation can be faster and accepted by stakeholders.

Purpose The implementation of high performance computing (HPC) in business (especially small and medium-sized enterprises) is accompanied with mistrust to a certain extent, which has imposed the need for building of digital trust (DTrust) among stakeholders. The purpose of the present paper is to find out the ways on how to build and maintain such trust. Design/methodology/approach Analysis and critical reflection on previous research dealing with phenomena of digital transformation (DT), HPC, corporate digital responsibility (CDR) and DTrust have enabled the authors to design their own conceptual model as the answer to the research questions of how, and in what way, CDR influences DTrust. Findings The authors have determined that the previous researches pointed to the existence of the correlation between CDR and DTrust although they did not elaborate on this explicitly. It was shown that the DT itself directly influences trust and sustainability. The indirect influence DT has via CDR was the task the authors undertook through designing a new conceptual model within whose frame the authors separately presented the influence of total CDR on DTrust as well as of the specific CDR dimensions on the particular dimensions of DTrust. Originality/value The authors tried to offer the conceptual model that exactly determines the relation of individual dimensions of the processed phenomena by analyzing theoretical and empirical researches carried out so far, and eo ipso shed more light on their mutual relation. The authors firmly believe that this paper offers a useful frame for further empirical researches.
