Abstract Bi-adjoint scalars are helpful in studying properties of color/kinematics duality and the double copy, which relates scattering amplitudes of gauge and gravity theories. Here we study bi-adjoint scalars from a worldline perspective. We show how a global G × $$ \overset{\sim }{G} $$ G ~ symmetry group may be realized by worldline degrees of freedom. The worldline action gives rise to vertex operators, which are compared to similar ones describing the coupling to gauge fields and gravity, thus exposing the color/kinematics interplay in this framework. The action is quantized by path integrals to find a worldline representation of the one-loop QFT effective action of the bi-adjoint scalar cubic theory. As simple applications, we recover the one-loop beta function of the theory in six dimensions, verifying its vanishing, and compute the self-energy correction to the propagator. The model is easily extendable to that of a particle carrying an arbitrary representation of direct products of global symmetry groups, including the multi-adjoint particle, whose one-loop beta function we reproduce as well.

An emergence of cosmic space has been suggested by Padmanabhan [Emergence and expansion of cosmic space as due to the quest for holographic equipartition, arXiv:hep-th/1206.4916] where he proposed that the expansion of the universe originates from a difference between the number of degrees of freedom on a holographic surface and the one in the emerged bulk. Now, a natural question that arises is how this proposal would explain the production of fermions and an emergence of the Pauli exclusion principle during the evolution of the universe? We try to address this issue in a system of [Formula: see text]-branes. In this model, there is a high symmetry and the system is composed of [Formula: see text]-branes to which only scalar fields are attached that represent scalar modes of the graviton. Then, when [Formula: see text]-branes join each other and hence form [Formula: see text]-branes, this symmetry is broken and gauge fields are formed. Therefore, these [Formula: see text]-branes interact with the anti-[Formula: see text]-branes and the force between them leads to a break of a symmetry such as the lower and upper parts of these branes are not the same. In these conditions, gauge fields which are localized on [Formula: see text]-branes and scalars which are attached to them symmetrically, decay to fermions with upper and lower spins which attach to the upper and lower parts of the [Formula: see text]-branes anti-symmetrically. The curvature produced by the coupling of identical spins has the opposite sign of the curvature produced by non-identical spins which lead to an attractive force between anti-parallel spins and a repelling force between parallel spins and hence an emergence of the Pauli exclusion principle. By approaching [Formula: see text]-branes to each other, the difference between curvatures of parallel spins and curvatures of anti-parallel spins increases, which leads to an inequality between the number of degrees of freedom on the surface and the one in the emerged bulk and hence lead to an occurrence of the cosmic expansion. By approaching [Formula: see text]-branes to each other, the square of the energy of the system becomes negative and hence tachyonic states arise. To remove these states, [Formula: see text]-branes compactify, the sign of gravity changes and anti-gravity emerges which leads to the branes moving away from each other. By joining [Formula: see text]-branes, [Formula: see text]-branes are produced which are similar to an initial system that oscillates between compacting and opening branches. Our universe is placed on one of these [Formula: see text]-branes and by changing the difference between the amount of couplings between identical and non-identical spins, it contracts or expands.

In this paper, we establish the analysis of noncommutative Yukawa theory, encompassing neutral and charged scalar fields. We approach the analysis by considering carefully the derivation of the respective effective actions. Hence, based on the obtained results, we compute the one-loop contributions to the neutral and charged scalar field self-energy, as well as to the Chern–Simons polarization tensor. In order to properly define the behavior of the quantum fields, the known UV/IR mixing due to radiative corrections is analyzed in the one-loop physical dispersion relation of the scalar and gauge fields.

Abstract We calculate the master integrals for bipartite cuts of the three-loop propagator QED diagrams. These master integrals determine the spectral density of the photon self energy. Our results are expressed in terms of the iterated integrals, which, apart from the 4m cut (the cut of 4 massive lines), reduce to Goncharov’s polylogarithms. The master integrals for 4m cut have been calculated in our previous paper in terms of the one-fold integrals of harmonic polylogarithms and complete elliptic integrals. We provide the threshold and high-energy asymptotics of the master integrals found, including those for 4m cut.

Abstract We apply the classical double copy to the calculation of self-energy of composite systems with multipolar coupling to gravitational field, obtaining next-to-leading order results in the gravitational coupling GN by generalizing color to kinematics replacement rules known in literature. When applied to the multipolar description of the two-body system, the self-energy diagrams studied in this work correspond to tail processes, whose physical interpretation is of radiation being emitted by the non-relativistic source, scattered by the curvature generated by the binary system and then re-absorbed by the same source. These processes contribute to the conservative two-body dynamics and the present work represents a decisive step towards the systematic use of double copy within the multipolar post-Minkowskian expansion.

We calculate the self-energy Σ(k, ω) of an electron gas with a Coulomb interaction in a composite 2D system, consisting of metallic layers of thickness d ≳ a 0, where a 0 = ħ2∊1/ me 2 is the Bohr radius, separated by layers with a dielectric constant ∊2 and a lattice constant c perpendicular to the planes. The behavior of the electron gas is determined by the dimensionless parameters k F a 0 and k F c ∊2/∊1. We find that when ∊2/∊1 is large (≈5 or more), the velocity v(k) becomes strongly k-dependent near k F , and v ( k F ) is enhanced by a factor of 5-10. This behavior is similar to the one found by Lindhard in 1954 for an unscreened electron gas; however here we take screening into account. The peak in v(k) is very sharp (δ k/k F is a few percent) and becomes sharper as ∊2/∊1 increases. This velocity renormalization has dramatic effects on the transport properties; the conductivity at low T increases like the square of the velocity renormalization and the resistivity due to elastic scattering becomes temperature dependent, increasing approximately linearly with T. For scattering by phonons, ρ ∝ T 2. Preliminary measurements suggest an increase in v k in YBCO very close to k F .

We consider target space duality transformations for heterotic sigma models and strings away from renormalization group fixed points. By imposing certain consistency requirements between the T-duality symmetry and renormalization group flows, the one-loop gauge beta function is uniquely determined, without any diagram calculations. Classical T-duality symmetry is a valid quantum symmetry of the heterotic sigma model, severely constraining its renormalization flows at this one-loop order. The issue of heterotic anomalies and their cancellation is addressed from this duality constraining viewpoint.

One-way clutches are frequently used in the serpentine belt accessory drives of automobiles and heavy vehicles. The clutch plays a role similar to a vibration absorber in order to reduce belt/pulley vibration and noise and increase belt life. This paper analyzes a two-pulley system where the driven pulley has a one-way clutch between the pulley and accessory shaft that engages only for positive relative displacement between these components. The belt is modeled with linear springs that transmit torque from the driving pulley to the accessory pulley. The one-way clutch is modeled as a piecewise linear spring with discontinuous stiffness that separates the driven pulley into two degrees of freedom (DOF). The harmonic balance method (HBM) combined with arc-length continuation is employed to illustrate the nonlinear dynamic behavior of the one-way clutch. HBM with arc-length continuation yields the stable and unstable periodic solutions for given parameters. These solutions are examined across a range of excitation frequencies. The results are confirmed by numerical integration and the widely used bifurcation software AUTO. At the first primary resonance, most of the responses are aperiodic, including quasiperiodic and chaotic solutions. At the second primary resonance, the peak bends to the left with classical softening nonlinearity because clutch disengagement decouples the pulley and the accessory over portions of the response period. The dependence on system parameters such as clutch stiffness, excitation amplitude, and inertia ratio between the pulley and accessory is studied to characterize the nonlinear dynamics across a range of conditions.

Abstract The generalized Kerr-Schild ansatz (GKSA) is a powerful tool for constructing exact solutions in Double Field Theory (DFT). In this paper we focus in the heterotic formulation of DFT, considering up to four-derivative terms in the action principle, while the field content is perturbed by the GKSA. We study the inclusion of the generalized version of the Green-Schwarz mechanism to this setup, in order to reproduce the low energy effective heterotic supergravity upon parametrization. This formalism reproduces higher-derivative heterotic background solutions where the metric tensor and Kalb-Ramond field are perturbed by a pair of null vectors. Next we study higher-derivative contributions to the classical double copy structure. After a suitable identification of the null vectors with a pair of U(1) gauge fields, the dynamics is given by a pair of Maxwell equations plus higher derivative corrections in agreement with the KLT relation.

We calculate the self-energy of two-dimensional fermions that are coupled to transverse gauge fields, taking two-loop corrections into account. Given a bare gauge field propagator that diverges for small momentum transfers q as 1/qη, 1<η≤ 2, the fermionic self-energy without vertex corrections vanishes for small frequencies ω as Σ(ω)∝ ωγ with γ=2/(1+η)<1. We show that inclusion of the leading radiative correction to the fermion-gauge field vertex leads to Σ(ω)∝ωγ [1-aη ln (ω0/ω)], where aη is a positive numerical constant and ω0 is some finite energy scale. The negative logarithmic correction is consistent with the scenario that higher order vertex corrections push the exponent γ to larger values.

Long duration automobile-induced vibration is the cause of many ailments to humans. Predicting and mitigating these vibrations through seat requires a good model of seated human body. A good model is the one that strikes the right balance between modelling difficulty and simulation results accuracy. Increasing the number of body parts which have been separately modelled and increasing the number of ways these parts are connected to each other increase the number of degrees of freedom of the entire model. A number of such models have been reported in the literature. These range from simple lumped parameter models with limited accuracy to advanced models with high computational cost. However, a systematic comparison of these models has not been reported till date. This work creates eight such models ranging from 8 to 26 degrees of freedom and tries to identify the model which strikes the right balance between modelling complexity and results accuracy. A comparison of the models’ prediction with experimental data published in the literature allows the identification of a 12 degree of freedom backrest supported model as optimum for modelling complexity and prediction accuracy.
