Abstract Objectives Although ultra-short pulsed laser (USPL) microstructuring has previously improved zirconia bond-strength, it is yet unclear how different laser-machined surface microstructures and patterns may influence the material’s mechanical properties. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the flexural strength of zirconia after different USPL settings creating three different geometrical patterns with structures in micrometer scale. Methods One hundred sixty zirconia bars (3Y-TZP, 21 × 4 × 2.1 mm) were prepared and randomly divided into five groups (n = 32): no surface treatment (negative control-NC); sandblasting with Al2O3 (SB); and three laser groups irradiated with USPL (Nd:YVO4/1064 nm/2-34 J/cm2/12 ps): crossed-lines (LC), random-hatching (LR), and parallel-waves (LW). Bars were subjected to a four-point flexural test (1 mm/min) and crystal phase content changes were identified by X-ray diffraction. Surface roughness and topography were analyzed through 3D-laser-profilometry and SEM. Data were analyzed with parametric tests for roughness and Weibull for flexural strength (α = 5%). Results LR (Mean[95%CI]: 852.0 MPa, [809.2–894.7]) was the only group that did not show a significantly different flexural strength than NC (819.8 MPa, [796.6–842.9]), (p > 0.05). All laser groups exhibited higher Weibull moduli than NC and SB, indicating higher reliability and homogeneity of the strength data. An increase of monoclinic phase peak was only observed for SB. Conclusion In conclusion, USPL created predictable, homogeneous, highly reproducible, and accurate surface microstructures on zirconia ceramic. The laser-settings of random-hatching (12 ps pulses) increased 3Y-TZP average surface roughness similarly to SB, while not causing deleterious crystal phase transformation or loss of flexural strength of the material. Furthermore, it has increased the Weibull modulus and consequently material’s reliability. Clinical significance Picosecond laser microstructuring (LR conditions) of 3Y-TZP ceramic does not decrease its flexural strength, while increasing materials realiability and creating highly reproducible and accurate microstructures. These features may be of interest both for improving clinical survival of zirconia restorations as well as enhancing longevity of zirconia implants.

Conventional bonding technology suitable for silica-based ceramics is not applicable to zirconia, due to its polycrystalline phase composition, chemical stability, and acid corrosion resistance. The development of an effective treatment to improve its surface roughness and mechanical properties remains an unresolved problem. Therefore, to solve this problem, this in vitro study evaluated the changes in surface morphology and flexural strength of translucent monolithic zirconia surfaces treated with femtosecond laser technology. As-sintered translucent zirconia specimens were subjected to airborne particle abrasion and femtosecond laser treatments, while control group specimens received no treatment. After treatment, the roughness and morphology of the treated zirconia surfaces were examined. The flexural strength and X-ray diffraction of the treated specimens were measured and analyzed. Statistical inferential analysis included one-way analysis of variance at a set significance level of 5%. The surface roughness after femtosecond laser treatment was significantly improved when compared with the control group and the group that received the airborne particle abrasion treatment (p < 0.05). In comparison with the airborne particle abrasion group, the flexural strength of the group that received the femtosecond laser treatment was significantly improved (p < 0.05). The femtosecond laser approach using appropriate parameters enhanced the roughness of the zirconia without reducing its flexural strength; therefore, this approach offers potential for the treatment of zirconia surfaces.

A three-dimensional, thermal-structural finite element model, originally developed for the study of laser–solid interactions and the generation and propagation of surface acoustic waves in the macroscopic level, was downscaled for the investigation of the surface roughness influence on pulsed laser–solid interactions. The dimensions of the computational domain were reduced to include the laser-heated area of interest. The initially flat surface was progressively downscaled to model the spatial roughness profile characteristics with increasing geometrical accuracy. Since we focused on the plastic and melting regimes, where structural changes occur in the submicrometer scale, the proposed downscaling approach allowed for their accurate positioning. Additionally, the multiscale simulation results were discussed in relation to experimental findings based on white light interferometry. The combination of this multiscale modeling approach with the experimental methodology presented in this study provides a multilevel scientific tool for an in-depth analysis of the influence of heat parameters on the surface roughness of solid materials and can be further extended to various laser–solid interaction applications.

AbstractIt is well known that the surface topography of a part can affect its mechanical performance, which is typical in additive manufacturing. In this context, we report about the surface modification of additive manufactured components made of Titanium 64 (Ti64) and Scalmalloy®, using a pulsed laser, with the aim of reducing their surface roughness. In our experiments, a nanosecond-pulsed infrared laser source with variable pulse durations between 8 and 200 ns was applied. The impact of varying a large number of parameters on the surface quality of the smoothed areas was investigated. The results demonstrated a reduction of surface roughness Sa by more than 80% for Titanium 64 and by 65% for Scalmalloy® samples. This allows to extend the applicability of additive manufactured components beyond the current state of the art and break new ground for the application in various industrial applications such as in aerospace.

Titanium alloy Ti1023 is a typical difficult-to-cut material. Tool wear is easy to occur in machining Ti1023, which has a significant negative effect on surface integrity. Turning is one of the common methods to machine Ti1023 parts and machined surface integrity has a direct influence on the fatigue life of parts. To control surface integrity and improve anti-fatigue behavior of Ti1023 parts, it has an important significance to study the influence of tool wear on the surface integrity and fatigue life of Ti1023 in turning. Therefore, the effect of tool wear on the surface roughness, microhardness, residual stress, and plastic deformation layer of Ti1023 workpieces by turning and low-cycle fatigue tests were studied. Meanwhile, the influence mechanism of surface integrity on anti-fatigue behavior also was analyzed. The experimental results show that the change of surface roughness caused by worn tools has the most influence on anti-fatigue behavior when the tool wear VB is from 0.05 to 0.25 mm. On the other hand, the plastic deformation layer on the machined surface could properly improve the anti-fatigue behavior of specimens that were proved in the experiments. However, the higher surface roughness and significant surface defects on surface machined utilizing the worn tool with VB = 0.30 mm, which leads the anti-fatigue behavior of specimens to decrease sharply. Therefore, to ensure the anti-fatigue behavior of parts, the value of turning tool wear VB must be rigorously controlled under 0.30 mm during finishing machining of titanium alloy Ti1023.

This manuscript discusses the experimental results on 300 W picosecond laser machining of aerospace-grade nickel superalloy. The effect of the laser’s energetic and beam scanning parameters on the machining performance has been studied in detail. The machining performance has been investigated in terms of surface roughness, sub-surface thermal damage, and material removal rate. At optimal process conditions, a picosecond laser with an average power output of 300 W can be used to achieve a material removal rate (MRR) of ∼140 mm3/min, with thermal damage less than 20 µm. Shorter laser pulse widths increase the material removal rate and reduce the resultant surface roughness. High scanning speeds improve the picosecond laser machining performance. Edge wall taper of ∼10° was observed over all the picosecond laser machined slots. The investigation demonstrates that high-power picosecond lasers can be used for the macro-machining of industrial components at an acceptable speed and quality.

Industry 4.0 requires phenomenon twins to functionalize the relevant systems (e.g., cyber-physical systems). A phenomenon twin means a computable virtual abstraction of a real phenomenon. In order to systematize the construction process of a phenomenon twin, this study proposes a system defined as the phenomenon twin construction system. It consists of three components, namely the input, processing, and output components. Among these components, the processing component is the most critical one that digitally models, simulates, and validates a given phenomenon extracting information from the input component. What kind of modeling, simulation, and validation approaches should be used while constructing the processing component for a given phenomenon is a research question. This study answers this question using the case of surface roughness—a complex phenomenon associated with all material removal processes. Accordingly, this study shows that for modeling the surface roughness of a machined surface, the approach called semantic modeling is more effective than the conventional approach called the Markov chain. It is also found that to validate whether or not a simulated surface roughness resembles the expected roughness, the outcomes of the possibility distribution-based computing and DNA-based computing are more effective than the outcomes of a conventional computing wherein the arithmetic mean height of surface roughness is calculated. Thus, apart from the conventional computing approaches, the leading edge computational intelligence-based approaches can digitize manufacturing processes more effectively.

There is a difference in machining by the cutting tool with defined geometry and undefined geometry. That is one of the reasons of implementation of hard turning into the machining process. In current manufacturing processes is hard turning many times used as a fine finish operation. It has many advantages – machining by single point cutting tool, high productivity, flexibility, ability to produce parts with complex shapes at one clamping. Very important is to solve machined surface quality. There is a possibility to use wiper geometry in hard turning process to achieve 3 – 4 times lower surface roughness values. Cutting parameters influence cutting process as well as cutting tool geometry. It is necessary to take into consideration cutting force components as well. Issue of the use of wiper geometry has been still insufficiently researched.

The study presented involves the identification of surface roughness in Aluminum work pieces in an end milling process using fuzzy clustering of vibration signals. Vibration signals are experimentally acquired using an accelerometer for varying cutting conditions such as spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut. Features are then extracted by processing the acquired signals in both the time and frequency domain. Techniques based on statistical parameters, Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT) and the Continuous Wavelet Transforms (CWT) are utilized for feature extraction. The surface roughness of the machined surface is also measured. In this study, fuzzy clustering is used to partition the feature sets, followed by a correlation with the experimentally obtained surface roughness measurements. The fuzzifier and the number of clusters are varied and it is found that the partitions produced by fuzzy clustering in the vibration signal feature space are related to the partitions based on cutting conditions with surface roughness as the output parameter. The results based on limited simulations are encouraging and work is underway to develop a larger framework for online cutting condition monitoring system for end milling.
