AbstractThis paper analyses how China’s investments in Germany have developed over time and the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in this regard, based on four different datasets, including our own survey in mid-2020. Our analysis shows that Germany is currently one of the most attractive investment destinations for Chinese investors. Chinese state-owned enterprises have played an important role as investors in Germany — particularly in large-scale projects. The COVID-19 pandemic has had some negative but rather temporary effects on Chinese investments in Germany. Germany is expected to stay attractive to Chinese investors who seek to gain access to advanced technologies and know-how in the future.

Schon heute muss die Strukturlayoutplanung Innovationen und Unsicherheiten in Form von mehr Varianten, abgestimmt in sehr kurzer Zeit, durch die Einbeziehung von weiteren Know-how-Trägern berücksichtigen. Neue Herausforderungen, wie die Planung der Batteriefertigungen, müssen schnell und intuitiv gelöst werden. Einen Beitrag dafür liefert dieser Artikel.   Future technologies in automotive mobility as well as new factory and logistic concepts are changing the framework in car production. Innovations and uncertainties (e. g. the impact of new technologies) have to be taken in consideration for the factory of the future. New tasks, such as planning the assembly of batteries, need to be solved fast and intuitively. This paper presents an approach to this topic.

This chapter discusses how the time of the COVID-19 pandemic was also a time when the world, in many respects, had never been better—or healthier. In a number of key areas—from life expectancy, to declines in poverty, to reductions in preventable diseases like HIV/AIDS—it was, and is, a more favorable time to be alive than any other point in recorded history. All these advances was a byproduct of foundational forces unfolding over time, forces like industrialization, global development, urbanization, and political changes. However, the incidental nature of this success has meant that we have yet to fully acknowledge why it occurred, which hinders our ability to advance it in the future. Why do we need to know how we got here? First, our understanding of the causes of health shapes our investment in health. America's investment in healthcare comes at the expense of their investment in the foundational drivers of health. The second reason is that if we do not understand the true causes of health, we will be unable to build a world that is ready for the next pandemic.

In this final chapter to the second edition of Practical Psychiatric Epidemiology, developments in psychiatric epidemiology since the first edition are summarized and the editors offer a view on where the future may lie. The themes summarized in this chapter include those related to large-scale datasets or ‘big data’, new technologies and science communication (including data generated through GPS tracking systems and the impact of social media), expanding biological data and biobanks, as well as the impact of globalization, migration, and culture on understanding psychiatric epidemiological principles. The last part of this chapter raises the important issue of open science initiatives. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion on the constancy and ongoing evolution of psychiatric epidemiology.

Abstract Gastropods are the largest and most diverse class of mollusc and include species that are well studied within the areas of taxonomy, aquaculture, biomineralization, ecology, microbiome and health. Gastropod research has been expanding since the mid-2000s, largely due to large-scale data integration from next-generation sequencing and mass spectrometry in which transcripts, proteins and metabolites can be readily explored systematically. Correspondingly, the huge data added a great deal of complexity for data organization, visualization and interpretation. Here, we reviewed the recent advances involving gastropod omics (‘gastropodomics’) research from hundreds of publications and online genomics databases. By summarizing the current publicly available data, we present an insight for the design of useful data integrating tools and strategies for comparative omics studies in the future. Additionally, we discuss the future of omics applications in aquaculture, natural pharmaceutical biodiscovery and pest management, as well as to monitor the impact of environmental stressors.

The impact of potential aviation gas turbine fuels available in the near to midterm, is reviewed with particular reference to the small aviation gas turbine engine. The future course of gas turbine combustion R&D, and the probable need for compromise in fuels and engine technology, is also discussed. Operating experience to date on Pratt & Whitney Aircraft of Canada PT6 engines, with fuels not currently considered of aviation quality, is reported.

Abstract Background:Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion can result in the development of alloantibodies that can make it difficult to find compatible RBCs for future transfusions and increase the risk of hemolytic transfusion reactions. Despite the consequences of RBC alloimmunization, the factors that regulate this process remain relatively unknown. Recent studies suggest that complement deposition on an antigen surface can significantly enhance the immune response to foreign antigen. As many anti-RBC alloantibodies fix complement and RBCs otherwise lack known adjuvants, early antibody-mediated complement deposition may serve as a key regulator that enhances antibody production. To test this, we employed the KEL RBC model system, which employs RBCs that transgenically express the human KEL antigen specifically on RBCs (KEL RBCs). Using this system, we examined the immunological consequence of KEL RBC exposure following transfusion into C57BL/6 wild-type (WT) or complement component 3 (C3) knockout (KO) recipients. Methods: KEL RBCs were transfused into WT or C3 KO recipients, followed by serum collection on days 3, 5, 7, 14, and 21 post-transfusion. Antibody development in WT or C3 KO recipients was examined by flow crossmatch, where serum was incubated with KEL RBCs followed by antibody detection with fluorescently-tagged secondary anti-IgM and anti-IgG antibodies using flow cytometry. To determine the impact of complement deposition on the level of detectable antigen on the RBC surface, RBCs were labeled with the lipophilic dye, DiI, prior to transfusion and then sampled 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 days post-transfusion. The level of detectable KEL antigen, complement deposition, KEL RBC survival and antibody bound to the RBC surface was measured by flow cytometry. To examine the effect of complement deposition on the level of KEL protein in the RBC membrane post-transfusion, RBCs stroma was isolated at various time points post transfusion, followed by western blot analysis for the KEL protein. Results: While KEL RBCs induced robust anti-KEL antibody formation and C3 deposition in WT recipients, similar exposure to KEL RBCs in C3 KO recipients actually resulted in an unexpected increase in IgM and IgG anti-KEL antibodies when compared to WT recipients. To determine the consequence of C3 deposition, we examined the potential impact of antibody engagement and complement fixation on KEL antigen levels. Consistent with a potential role for complement in directly impacting KEL antigen availability to the immune system, KEL RBCs transferred into WT recipients experienced a decrease in the level of detectable KEL antigen over time that paralleled the development of anti-KEL antibodies and C3 deposition. In contrast, C3 KO recipients failed to experience the same degree of KEL antigen reduction despite the development of significant anti-KEL antibodies over this same time period. Western blot analysis of RBCs post-transfusion revealed that loss of detectable KEL antigen on the RBC surface paralleled a complete lack of detectable KEL antigen in RBC membranes, indicating that C3 may actually facilitate the removal of KEL from the RBC surface. Conclusion: These results suggest an unexpected role for C3 in negatively regulating antibody responses following RBC transfusion. The impact of C3 on the developing alloantibody response strongly suggests that C3-mediated loss of antigen over time likely reduces antigen availability to the immune system, thereby facilitating the inhibition of antibody production over time. These results not only provide novel insight into potential impact of antigen modulation on the development of an immune response to a RBC alloantigen, but also suggest a completely unexpected role for complement in negatively regulating alloantibody production. In doing so, these results suggest that unique differences in complement activity and overall activation following RBC alloantigen exposure between individuals may represent a previously unrecognized factor that influences alloantibody formation following RBC transfusion. Abstract The sectorisation of water supply networks (WSNs) includes the permanent closure of valves in order to achieve a cost-effective leakage management and simplify pressure control. The impact of networks sectorisation, also known as district metered areas (DMAs), on water quality and discolouration has not been extensively studied and it remains unknown. In addition, hydraulic variables used in the literature for assessing the likelihood of potential discolouration are limited and inconclusive. This paper investigates a methodology to evaluate the impact of networks sectorisation (DMAs) on water quality and the likelihood of discolouration incidents. The methodology utilises a set of surrogate hydraulic variables and an analysis of the hydraulic condition in pipes with historic discolouration complaints. The proposed methodology has been applied to a large-scale WSN, with and without sectors, in order to assess the potential impact of DMAs on water quality. The results demonstrate that the sectorisation of WSN (DMAs) could compromise the overall water quality and increase the likelihood of discolouration incidents. The results of this study and the proposed surrogate hydraulic variables facilitate the formulation of optimisation problems for the re-design and control of WSNs with sectorised topologies.

Abstract. Shipping is an important source of air pollutants, from the global to the local scale. Ships emit substantial amounts of sulfur dioxides, nitrogen dioxides, and particulate matter in the vicinity of coasts, threatening the health of the coastal population, especially in harbour cities. Reductions in emissions due to shipping have been targeted by several regulations. Nevertheless, effects of these regulations come into force with temporal delays, global ship traffic is expected to grow in the future, and other land-based anthropogenic emissions might decrease. Thus, it is necessary to investigate combined impacts to identify the impact of shipping activities on air quality, population exposure, and health effects in the future. We investigated the future effect of shipping emissions on air quality and related health effects considering different scenarios of the development of shipping under current regional trends of economic growth and already decided regulations in the Gothenburg urban area in 2040. Additionally, we investigated the impact of a large-scale implementation of shore electricity in the Port of Gothenburg. For this purpose, we established a one-way nested chemistry transport modelling (CTM) system from the global to the urban scale, to calculate pollutant concentrations, population-weighted concentrations, and health effects related to NO2, PM2.5, and O3. The simulated concentrations of NO2 and PM2.5 in future scenarios for the year 2040 are in general very low with up to 4 ppb for NO2 and up to 3.5 µg m−3 PM2.5 in the urban areas which are not close to the port area. From 2012 the simulated overall exposure to PM2.5 decreased by approximately 30 % in simulated future scenarios; for NO2 the decrease was over 60 %. The simulated concentrations of O3 increased from the year 2012 to 2040 by about 20 %. In general, the contributions of local shipping emissions in 2040 focus on the harbour area but to some extent also influence the rest of the city domain. The simulated impact of onshore electricity implementation for shipping in 2040 shows reductions for NO2 in the port of up to 30 %, while increasing O3 of up to 3 %. Implementation of onshore electricity for ships at berth leads to additional local reduction potentials of up to 3 % for PM2.5 and 12 % for SO2 in the port area. All future scenarios show substantial decreases in population-weighted exposure and health-effect impacts.

This paper addresses the importance of building knowledge on the impact of cybercrime victimization. Because the topic is understudied, it is unclear whether the impact of cybercrime differs from that of traditional crime. Our understanding of potential impact differences needs to be improved, considering that society and criminality are digitizing and, consequently, more people are likely to become victims of cybercrime. From a practical perspective, knowledge about the impact of different crimes is important to develop victim policies within law enforcement and other relevant agencies, and to treat victims appropriately. In this paper, a literature review is provided, as well as future research directions to address the current knowledge gap. The future research directions are divided in three topics: (1) distinguishing between cybercrime and traditional crime, (2) classifying cybercrime and traditional crime, and (3) measuring the victimization impact of cybercrime and traditional crime.

AbstractThis article discusses the shifting phenomenon from rule of law to ‘rule of persuasion’ by analysing regulations concerning Covid-19 mitigation through large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) and their impact on Indonesian economy and financial sector. Analysis of PSBB regulations shows that the regulations do not have criminal and law enforcement provisions that could lead legal uncertainty. PSBB regulations are simply a persuasion model. This has led to the shifting from rule of law to ‘law rule of persuasion’. As a result, on one hand, law enforcement related to PSBB regulations would not be effective and could make the Covid-19 pandemic prolonged, and on the other hand, legal uncertainty itself as well as the Covid-19 pandemic would have serious implications for Indonesian economy and financial sector. It is recommended that in the future, any regulations, especially at the level of statutes (acts), should seriously consider the establishment of legal certainty through criminal provisions and law enforcement and anticipate properly the impact such regulations and Covid-19 on Indonesian economy and financial sector.Keywords: legal uncertainty; rule of law; ‘rule of persuasion’AbstrakArtikel ini membahas fenomena pergeseran negara ke ‘negara himbauan’ dengan melakukan analisis terhadap regulasi terkait penangangan Covid-19 melalui pembatasan sosial berskala besar (PSBB) dan dampaknya terhadap keuangan dan perekonomian Indonesia. Analisis terhadap regulasi PSBB menunjukan bahwa regulasi tidak memiliki ketentuan pidana dan aspek penegakan hukumnya yang dapat menimbulkan ketidakpastian hukum. Regulasi PSBB sekedar merupakan model himbauan yang telah menegaskan adanya fenomena pergeseran dari negara hukum ke ‘negara himbauan’. Akibatnya, di satu sisi, penegakan hukum terhadap regulasi PSBB tidak akan berjalan efektif dan bisa membuat pandemi Covid-19 berkepanjangan, dan di sisi lainnya, ketidakpastian hukum sebagaimana juga pandemic Covid-19 akan memiliki implikasi serius bagi perekonomian dan keuangan Indonesia. Direkomendasikan agar kedepannya, regulasi apapun, utamanya di tingkat undang-undang, harus secara sungguh memperhatikan aspek kepastian hukum melalui pengaturan dalam ketentuan pidana dan penegakan hukumnya dan mengantisipasi secara tepat dampak regulasi dan Covid-19 bagi perekonomian dan keuangan Indonesia. Kata kunci: ketidakpastian hukum; negara hukum; ‘negara himbauan’
