This study studied the content and composition of the total lipid, lipid classes and fatty acids in 13 brown seaweed Sargassum species collected from Con Dao and Van Phong, Vietnam. The total lipid has a low content and varies among species from 0.10–1.70% of the fresh weight. From 13 species, seven lipid classes including polar lipid (Pol), free fatty acids (FFA), sterol (ST), hydrocarbon and wax (HW), triacylglycerol (TG), diacylglycerol (DG), and monoalkydiacylglycerol (MADG). Using the GC-FID technique, we have identified 29 fatty acids classified into 3 groups of saturated fatty acid, monounsaturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids with an average content of 44.93%, 24.57% and 27.44%, respectively. Among those, many value fatty acids have been detected with high content such as C18:3n-3, C20:4n-6, 20:5n-3, and 22:6n-3. The lipid of 13 brown seaweed Sargassum species also fully contains omega-3,6,9 fatty acids with the content of 9.28%, 16.28% and 16.63%, respectively.

Seaweeds are potentials to be developed as alternative source in foods and pharmaceuticals. In this study, chemical compositions of two brown seaweeds species from Karimun Java Indonesia Padina australis and Turbinaria conoides were investigated. Proximate results showed that both seaweeds contain high amount of carbohydrates and ashes. Mineral contents of P. australis and T. conoides follow the orders of Na>Mg>Fe>K>Ca>Zn>Cu and Na>Mg>K>Fe>Zn>Ca>Cu, respectively. Almost all essential amino acids (including histidine, isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine, threonine, valine and lysine) were present in both seaweeds. Amino acid profiles showed that both seaweed contain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) with T. conoides contain higher amount of EPA (8.58 ± 0.22 g/100 g of total fatty acids) and DHA (6.05 ± 0.21 g/100 g of total fatty acids). The findings of this study have provided evidence that brown seaweeds were nutritious and potential to be utilized for producing functional ingredients in food. Further, P. australis and T. conoides can be used as candidate to be used in food industries to increase shelf-life of food items for human consumption, and use to deter deleterious free radical-induced life-threatening diseases.

The present study aimed to contrast the fatty acid (FA) profile of ascidians (Ascidiacea) and seaweeds (sea lettuce, Ulva spp. and bladderwrack, Fucus sp.) occurring in a coastal lagoon with versus without the influence of organic-rich effluents from fish farming activities. Our results revealed that ascidians and seaweeds from these contrasting environments displayed significant differences in their FA profiles. The n-3/n-6 ratio of Ascidiacea was lower under the influence of fish farming conditions, likely a consequence of the growing level of terrestrial-based ingredients rich on n-6 FA used in the formulation of aquafeeds. Unsurprisingly, these specimens also displayed significantly higher levels of 18:1(n-7+n-9) and 18:2n-6, as these combined accounted for more than 50% of the total pool of FAs present in formulated aquafeeds. The dissimilarities recorded in the FAs of seaweeds from these different environments were less marked (≈5%), with these being more pronounced in the FA classes of the brown seaweed Fucus sp. (namely PUFA). Overall, even under the influence of organic-rich effluents from fish farming activities, ascidians and seaweeds are a valuable source of health-promoting FAs, which confirms their potential for sustainable farming practices, such as integrated multi-trophic aquaculture.

The aims of the research were to find out nutritional composition of seaweed Sargassum crassifolium J. Agardh i. e. concentration of protein, amino acids, mineral (ash), mineral elements (Ca, Fe, and P), vitamin C, vitamin A, lipid, fatty acids and alginates. S. crassifolium is a species of brown seaweed that is consumed as source of food, however, it have not optimally used due to the nutritional composition information does not complete yet. The measurement of protein concentration was done according to Lowry method, while amino acids concentration was measured using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Mineral (ash) was measured by dry ash processing, and mineral elements of Ca, Fe, and P were measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Vitamin C concentration was measured by titration method, while vitamin A was measured using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Lipid was measured by extraction method using soxhlet, fatty acids by fatty acids methyl esters (FAMEs) method, and alginates were measured by extraction method. The results indicate that the thallus of S. crassifolium contain protein in the average of 5.19% (w/w), and 17 amino acids (in Î¼mol amino acid/g wet weight) varies from 13.77 of glutamic acid to 0.83 for hydroxilicine concentration. Mineral/ash content was 36.93% (w/w), Ca: 1540.66 mg/100 g, Fe: 132.65 mg/100 g, P: 474.03 mg/100 g, vitamin C: 49.01 mg/100 g, vitamin A: 489.11 μg RE/100 g, lipid: 1.63% (w/w), fatty acids concentrations were: 1.45%, 3.53%, 29.49%, 4.10%, 13.78%, 33.58%, 5.94% for lauric acid, meristic acid, palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, and linolenic acid subsequently. The concentration of alginates was 37.91% (w/w).

Fourteen compounds were isolated from acetone extracts of three species of seaweeds (Eucheuma serra, a red seaweed, Halimeda opuntia, a green seaweed, and Hydroclathrus clathratus, a brown seaweed) using bioautographic TLC methods and identified using GC-MS. From Eucheuma serra were isolated 8 compounds (3 fatty acids, 3 steroids, and 2 aldehyds). Only two compounds of fatty acid camefrom Halimeda opuntia, whereas Hydroclathrus clathratus produced 6 compounds (4 fatty acids, one compound each of steroid and ether). All isolated single compoundswere tested for their antibacterial activities by the agar diffusion method against the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Streptococcusfaecalis, and the Gram-negative bacteria Echerichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhimurium. All 14 compounds showed activity against Gram-positivebacteria, especially Bacillus subtilis, and only 2 compounds showed activity against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli. Nine compounds showed activity against Staphylococcus aureus, and 4 compounds showed activity against Streptococcusfaecalis. All compounds were not active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa andSalmonella typhimurium bacteria. This study indicated that there is indeed a diversityboth in kinds and in molecular structures of the antibacterial substances.

The object of the present  study was a lipid complex isolated from the thallus of the brown seaweed Sargassum pallidum (Turner) C. Agardh (Sargassum pallidum). The lipid complex of S. pallidum included glycolipids in an amount of 35.1%, neutral lipids – 26.4%, phospholipids – 8.4%, as well as photosynthetic pigments – 30.1% of the total lipids. The content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was 63.5% of the total fatty acids, of which PUFAs of the n-6 family prevailed (46.5%), the amount of PUFAs of the n-3 family was 17%. Under conditions of fat load, the effect of the lipid complex of S. pallidum and the reference drug Omega-3 on the parameters of lipid metabolism and antioxidant protection in the blood plasma and liver of rats was studied. The fat load was carried out by feeding the animals for 30 days with a standard vivary diet with the addition of 2% cholesterol and 20% beef tallow of the total formulation. The addition of the S. pallidum lipid complex (1 g/kg of body weight) to the fat diet had a hypolipidemic effect, which manifested in the restoration of weight characteristics (body and specific liver’s weight), parameters of liver lipid metabolism (cholesterol, triacylglycerols, free fatty acids), esterifying function of the liver, as well as the content of lipoproteins in the blood plasma. The combined action of n-3 and n-6 PUFAs in the lipid complex of S. pallidum promoted the induction of enzymes of the glutathione circle, providing the antioxidant defense system of the organism. The lipid complex of the brown seaweed S. pallidum was not inferior to the reference preparation Omega-3 in restoration of lipid metabolism and antioxidant defense system of animals on a high-fat diet, and even surpassed that in some parameters.
