AbstractThis paper is a response and considers practical and design implications of the article, The process of designing for learning: understanding university teachers’ design work by Bennett et al. (Educ Technol Res Dev 65:125–145, 2017). Bennett et al. guide us in better understanding teachers’ design practices and in discussions on how such practices could be improved. A key contribution of the article is presenting a descriptive model of the design process. As such, the article is focused on teachers’ current design work, while giving more limited attention to how teachers’ design practice could be improved. When looking forward, this response emphasizes that teachers should be encouraged to inform their designs for learning and iteratively improve their designs based on reflection and evaluation. If teachers take time to look into what is known and deliberately learn more along the way through reflection and evaluation, they will improve their understanding of how to design for learning.

Community-engaged design is often framed as a binary opposite to commercial design. Whereas commercial design is usually characterized as a market-led paradigm focused on profits, community-engaged design is seen as a socially useful design paradigm that is concerned with addressing societal needs. This study uses qualitative data from four design project case studies to explore whether this understanding is in fact consistent with current design practices within commercial design studios. The findings of this study demonstrate that both commercial and community-engaged design practices are more similar than different. In addition, it is also suggested that it is not only the clients’ instructions and the commissions that determine the designers’ processes and practices, but the design studios’ intent, practice and values. This study has a number of practical implications for designers and design studios in how they address commercial and community-engaged design work.

AbstractUniversal design facilitates all user, a convenient interaction with the environment, product and services without the need for any adaptation and specialized designs. Recent studies have shown that designers and manufacturers are focusing only on a limited group of users during product development. Current design process or methodology cannot cater to all set of users i.e. Fully Abled People (FAP), Specially Abled People (SAP), and Differently Abled People (DAP) due to complexity in need interpretation. Identification and extraction of needs of diverse user set is a complex problem. Generally, information gathered from the users is linguistic in nature and comprises of uncertainties and ambiguities, which hamper conversion of users’ requirements into product attributes to deliver universal solutions. The aim of this work is to eliminate these uncertainties and extract the actual needs of all users. This work proposes the integration of Universal Product Design model with generic design process to improve universal product design practice. Linguistic preferences of the users are captured and converted into vague numbers to identify the important product attributes and provides a systematic framework of need prioritization.

This article is about the designer’s journey in design research where the designer has developed a body of work. The development of each project’s design process, method, technique, and practice-led research are addressed. The purpose of this article was to contribute to the design discipline by sharing an example of how a design researcher develops a body of work. This article first describes the designer’s design value and design process which has guided the designer’s creative work and practice. The 10 different creative works are presented in chronological order as the designer’s design development progressed. The designer’s design framework is presented along with the future direction of the designer’s design work.

This paper is a commentary on the design of crewboats and similar deep-vee-hulled planing boats constructed of aluminum. It includes a description of current design practices and significant problems encountered in the design process. It suggests techniques that can be used to avoid deficiencies in the strength and integrity of the hull. Mathematical expressions that will enable the naval architect to estimate design loads over any portion of the hull bottom have been developed from the latest research efforts, and it is hoped that future full-scale testing will refine even further the methods of predicting slamming loads. Recommended design loads for other parts of a vessel, and allowable design stresses, are also given. A worked example has been included to demonstrate the design process for a typical Gulf of Mexico crewboat,

Conventional design practices regard gender as a given precondition defined by femininity and masculinity. To shift these strategies to include non-heteronormative or queer users, queer theory served as a source of inspiration as well as user sensitive design techniques. As a result, a co-design workshop was developed and executed. Participants supported claims that gender scripts in designed artefacts uphold gender norms. The practice did not specify a definition of a queer design style. However, the co-design practice opened up the design process to non-normative gender scripts by unmasking binary gender dichotomies in industrial design.

AbstractBiobased production has been promoted as a sustainable alternative to fossil resources. However, controversies over its impact on sustainability highlight societal concerns, value tensions and uncertainties that have not been taken into account during its development. In this work, the consideration of stakeholders’ values in a biorefinery design project is investigated. Value sensitive design (VSD) is a promising approach to the design of technologies with consideration of stakeholders’ values, however, it is not directly applicable for complex systems like biorefineries. Therefore, some elements of VSD, such as the identification of relevant values and their connection to a technology’s features, are brought into biorefinery design practice. Midstream modulation (MM), an approach to promoting the consideration of societal aspects during research and development activities, is applied to promote reflection and value considerations during the design decision making. As result, it is shown that MM interventions during the design process led to new design alternatives in support of stakeholders' values, and allowed to recognize and respond to emerging value tensions within the scope of the project. In this way, the present work shows a novel approach for the technical investigation of VSD, especially for biorefineries. Also, based on this work it is argued that not only reflection, but also flexibility and openness are important for the application of VSD in the context of biorefinery design.

The concept of schifflerization of 90° equal-leg angle is presented and its application in triangular-base latticed steel towers is explained. The similarities and differences between schifflerized angles and regular 90° angles are discussed. The current design practice for schifflerized angles is reviewed and its limitation is highlighted. A design method which includes the effect of the torsional-flexural buckling mode of failure is proposed. For ready use of designers, the factored axial compressive resistances of schifflerized angles are tabulated for both the present and proposed design methods. Design reuse is the application of past designs knowledge and successful experience to current design process and it is a significant method for rapid design. A knowledge-reuse-based rapid product design model is proposed and a three-factor product design iterative process model is studied. Finally, it is applied successfully in the rapid product design of construction machinery combining with the requirement of the construct machinery product design.

Art of animation as an analysis of movement is based on the theory that the vision remains on the eye after the disappearance of the actual image, and this scientific theory is the same that the film industry was built upon. Recently, various techniques and ideas have entered the print design process as a means of expressing a phenomenon subject to the human will to change and elevate our aesthetic awareness and feelings, which rise in various forms of designs that reveal themselves in design work and are embodied in animation films. The design artwork falls within a group of intertwined elements fused with each other, reflecting the peculiarity of this work, as it is innovation and creating new and interesting things, so that the design is suitable for the desired purpose and beautifully. Perhaps the simplest type of optical illusion that can clarify to us the idea of the impression of the existence of an image that does not actually exist is represented in the decree paper.
