AbstractThis study aims to examine the relationship of sleep (sleep duration, sleep quality, and sleep rhythm) with presenteeism in workers while controlling for other confounding factors. A total of 2375 workers of six Japanese companies received self-administered questionnaires from June to November 2018. Information on sleep duration was used to evaluate sleep quantity, the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) was used to evaluate sleep quality, and workers’ engagement in shift work was used to determine their sleep rhythms. We used the World Health Organization Health and Work Performance Questionnaire to evaluate presenteeism. Information on lifestyle (exercise, smoking, etc.), sex, and age was also collected. We conducted a logistic regression analysis with high absolute/relative presenteeism as an objective variable, sleep duration, AIS, and shift work as dependent variables, and basic attributes and lifestyle factors as adjustment factors. Completed questionnaires were collected from 1992 workers (aged 18–79 years; 25.2% women; response rate: 83.9%). Logistic regression analysis showed that high absolute presenteeism was significantly associated with poor sleep quality (high AIS score; P < 0.001) but not with sleep duration (P = 0.326) and shift work (P = 0.177). High relative absenteeism was significantly associated with poor sleep quality (high AIS score; P = 0.001) but not with sleep duration (P = 0.461) or shift work (P = 0.245). We showed that poor sleep quality is significantly associated with a high level of presenteeism. This suggests focusing on improving sleep quality is important for reducing presenteeism among workers.

The scope of this study was to evaluate the sleep/wake cycle in shift work nurses, as well as their sleep quality and chronotype. The sleep/wake cycle was evaluated by keeping a sleep diary for a total of 60 nurses with a mean age of 31.76 years. The Horne & Östberg Questionnaire (1976) for the chronotype and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) for sleep quality were applied. The results revealed a predominance of indifferent chronotypes (65.0%), followed by moderately evening persons (18.3%), decidedly evening persons (8.3%), moderately morning persons (6.6%) and decidedly morning persons (1.8%). The sleep quality perception was analyzed by the visual analogical scale, showing a mean score of 5.85 points for nighttime sleep and 4.70 points for daytime sleep, which represented a statistically significant difference. The sleep/wake schedule was also statistically different when considering weekdays and weekends. The PSQI showed a mean of 7.0 points, characterizing poor sleep quality. The results showed poor sleep quality in shift work nurses, possibly due to the lack of sport and shift work habits.

Objective The aim of this study is to explore sleep status and hypertension among oil workers in Xinjiang, China. It may provide new ideas and basis for the precise prevention and treatment of hypertension in occupational population. Methods Sleep status and hypertension were investigated in 3,040 workers by a multi-stage cluster sampling method in six oil field bases in Karamay City, Xinjiang. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to evaluate the sleep status of workers. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between sleep duration and sleep quality, and hypertension. Stratified analysis was also performed. Results Our results show: 1. Insufficient sleep duration (OR = 1.51, 95% CI [1.19–1.90]) and poor sleep quality (OR = 1.78, 95% CI [1.33–2.38] were positively associated with hypertension. 2. Stratified analysis indicated insufficient sleep duration was associated with increased risk of hypertension in females (OR = 1.54, 95% CI [1.16–2.04]) than males (OR = 1.49, 95% CI [1.00–2.23]), and the risk of hypertension in the group <30 years old (OR = 9.03, 95% CI [2.32–35.15]) was higher than that in the group of 30–45 years old (OR = 1.59, 95% CI [1.14–2.20]). However, in the group > 45 years old, sleeping > 8 h was associated with increased risk of hypertension (OR = 3.36, 95% CI [1.42–7.91]). Oil workers doing shift work had a higher risk of hypertension (OR = 1.55, 95% CI [1.16–2.07]) to no shift work (OR = 1.48, 95% CI [1.02–2.15]). The risk of hypertension in the group with < 10 years of service (OR = 4.08, 95% CI [1.92–8.83]) was higher than that in the group with length of service of 10–20 years (OR = 2.79, 95% CI [1.59–4.86]). Poor sleep quality was associated with risk for hypertension in females (OR = 1.78, 95% CI [1.26–2.49]), those doing shift work (OR = 1.70, 95% CI [1.17–2.47]), those with length of service of > 20 years (OR = 1.64, 95% CI [1.18–2.27]). The risk of hypertension in the group 30–45 years old is higher than that in the group > 45 years old (OR 30–45 years old = 1.71, 95% CI [1.10–2.66]; OR > 45 years old = 1.60, 95% CI [1.09–2.34]). Conclusion Insufficient sleep duration and poor sleep quality are the potential factors affecting hypertension in Xinjiang oil workers.

AbstractThe association between sleep conditions and arterial stiffness remains inconclusive. We aimed to investigate the relationship of sleep duration and quality with brachial-ankle pulse-wave velocity (baPWV) in hypertensive patients. A total of 14,485 hypertensive adults were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Information about sleep duration and quality was obtained via questionnaire. A baPWV level ≥1800 cm/s was defined as indicative of arterial stiffness. Compared with participants with a sleep duration <8 h per day, participants with a sleep duration ≥8 h per day had a significantly higher baPWV level (β = 13.7 cm/s; 95% CI: 3.9, 23.5) and a nonsignificantly higher prevalence of arterial stiffness (39.7% vs. 33.0%; OR, 1.08; 95% CI: 0.99–1.19). Similarly, compared with participants with good or medium sleep quality, participants with poor sleep quality had a significantly higher baPWV level (β = 16.3 cm/s; 95% CI: 0.1, 32.6) and a nonsignificantly greater prevalence of arterial stiffness (36.6% vs. 35.3%; OR, 1.13; 95% CI: 0.97–1.32). When sleep duration and quality were examined jointly, participants with a sleep duration ≥8 h and/or poor sleep quality had a significantly higher baPWV level (β = 14.4 cm/s; 95% CI: 5.3, 23.4) and a greater prevalence of arterial stiffness (38.8% vs. 32.7%; OR, 1.10; 95% CI: 1.01–1.20) than those with a sleep duration <8 h and good/medium sleep quality. In summary, among hypertensive patients, a longer sleep duration (≥8 h per day) and poor sleep quality were associated with higher baPWV levels and a higher prevalence of arterial stiffness.

Background Globally, epilepsy is the commonest neurological disorder in adults. It has significant health and economic consequences to the affected individuals and the family. There is ample evidence that epileptic patients are at increased risk of poor sleep quality than the general population. However, there is limited evidence on sleep quality among epileptic patients and associated factors in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study investigated the prevalence of poor sleep quality and associated factors among adult patients with epilepsy. Method Institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted among adult epileptic patients attending follow-up care at referral hospitals in the Amhara region. A total of 575 epileptic patients were recruited using a stratified systematic random sampling technique. An interviewer-administered semi-structured questionnaire and record review were used for data collection. To assess sleep quality the pretested Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) tool was used. A binary logistic regression model was used to assess factors associated with poor sleep quality. Variables with a p-value less than 0.2 in the bivariable binary logistic regression analysis were considered for the multivariable binary logistic regression analysis. In the multivariable binary logistic regression analysis, the Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with the 95% Confidence Interval (CI) were reported to declare the statistical significance and strength of association. Model fitness was assessed using the Hosmer-Lemeshow test and was adequate (p>0.05). Multicollinearity of the independent variables was assessed using the Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) and the mean VIF was less than 10. Results A total of 565 participants were enrolled in the study with a response rate of 98.3%. The prevalence of poor sleep quality among adult epileptic patients was 68.8% [95% CI: 64.8%, 72.5%]. In the multivariable binary logistic regression, being unable to read and write [AOR = 3.16, 95%CI: 1.53, 6.51], taking polytherapy treatment [AOR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.37, 3.21], poor medication adherence [AOR = 2.53, 95%CI: 1.02, 6.23] and having poor support [AOR = 2.72, 95%CI: 1.53, 4.82] and moderate social support [AOR = 1.89, 95%CI: 1.05, 3.41] were significantly associated with higher odds of poor sleep quality. Conclusion and recommendation Poor sleep quality is a major public health concern in Ethiopia. The patient’s level of education, number of medication use, medication adherence, and social support were found significant predictors of poor sleep quality. These findings highlight improving medication adherence and social support are effective strategies to improve the sleep quality of epileptic patients. Besides, it is better to give special emphasis to those epileptic patients with a low level of education and taking polytherapy to enhance sleep quality.

Abstract BackgroundLifestyle and its relationship to aspects of sleep quality have been reported in many studies. An unhealthy lifestyle is associated with less sleep duration and sleep patterns. Breakfast skipping is as an important part of unhealthy lifestyle. Poor sleep quality and skipping breakfast are common in adolescents. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between nutritional habits (breakfast and midmorning snack) and sleep quality in Yazd adolescents.MethodsThis study was conducted among 569 students aged 12–16 years. They were selected by multistage random-cluster sampling method. Information such as demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, students' nutritional habits, physical activity and sleep quality were collected from all adolescents. All data were assessed by interview, 7-day food record, short form of the International Physical Activity, and Questionnaire and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The data were analyzed by SPSS software (version 22).ResultsThe prevalence of breakfast skipping and semi-skipping (57.2%), overweight and obesity (37.8%), and insufficient sleep duration (38.9%) were high. The sleep score was significantly better in boys (p = 0.02). Sleep quality score of 63.7 % of the students was poor, but a significant relationship was not illustrated between sleep quality with breakfast frequency, abnormal weight, breakfast time, morning snack intake. A significant relationship was found between poor sleep quality with late bedtime and low physical activity (p <0.0001), late dinner (p <0.004), and female gender (p <0.02).ConclusionsThis cross-sectional study supported the association between having dinner soon and no late bedtime with good sleep quality. But no significant difference was shown between sleep quality with weight and breakfast habits. This study suggested paying more attention to nutritional and sleeping status in this age group by employing skilled nutritionists and mental health professional in high schools.

Abstract Background The etiology of reflux esophagitis (RE) is multi-factorial. This study analyzed the relationship of depression, anxiety, lifestyle and eating habits with RE and its severity and further explored the impact of anxiety and depression on patients’ symptoms and quality of life. Methods From September 2016 to February 2018, a total of 689 subjects at Xuanwu Hospital Capital Medical University participated in this survey. They were divided into the RE group (patients diagnosed with RE on gastroscopy, n = 361) and the control group (healthy individuals without heartburn, regurgitation and other gastrointestinal symptoms, n = 328). The survey included general demographic information, lifestyle habits, eating habits, comorbidities, current medications, the gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) questionnaire (GerdQ), the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 depression scale and the General Anxiety Disorder-7 anxiety scale. Results The mean age and sex ratio of the two groups were similar. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified the following factors as related to the onset of RE (p < 0.05): low education level; drinking strong tea; preferences for sweets, noodles and acidic foods; sleeping on a low pillow; overeating; a short interval between dinner and sleep; anxiety; depression; constipation; history of hypertension; and use of oral calcium channel blockers. Ordinal logistic regression analysis revealed a positive correlation between sleeping on a low pillow and RE severity (p = 0.025). Depression had a positive correlation with the severity of symptoms (rs = 0.375, p < 0.001) and patients’ quality of life (rs = 0.306, p < 0.001), whereas anxiety showed no such association. Conclusions Many lifestyle factors and eating habits were correlated with the onset of RE. Notably, sleeping on a low pillow was positively correlated with RE severity, and depression was positively related to the severity of symptoms and patients’ quality of life.

AbstractPreliminary findings suggest that pets may impact the owner’s sleep. By using data from the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bIoimage Study (SCAPIS) cohort, we aimed to investigate the association of pet ownership with the following self-reported sleep outcomes in 3788 to 4574 participants: (i) achieving the recommended daily sleep duration for adults (i.e., at least 7 h per day); (ii) sleep quality as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (a score of > 5 indicating poor sleep quality); and (iii) difficulty falling or staying asleep. Sleep metrics were not associated with pet ownership, dog ownership, and dog walking when controlling the logistic regression for possible confounders (e.g., shift work, lack of social interaction, and chronic stress). In contrast, cat ownership was associated with a higher odds ratio of failing to achieve the recommended duration of 7 h of sleep per day (adjusted odds ratio [95% CI]:1.18 [1.02, 1.37] versus non-cat owners). Our findings suggest that certain pet groups might have a more significant impact on the owner’s sleep than others. As the observed association between cat ownership and short sleep duration might be a chance finding, this observation should be seen as hypothesis-generating only.

Fatigue and poor sleep quality are the most common clinical complaints of people with diabetes mellitus (DM). These complaints are early signs of DM and are closely related to diabetic control and the presence of complications, which lead to a decline in the quality of life. Therefore, an accurate measurement of the relationship between fatigue, sleep status, and the complication of DM nephropathy could lead to a specific definition of fatigue and an appropriate medical treatment. This study recruited 307 people with Type 2 diabetes from two medical centers in Northern Taiwan through a questionnaire survey and a retrospective investigation of medical records. In an attempt to identify the related factors and accurately predict diabetic nephropathy, we applied hybrid research methods, integrated biostatistics, and feature selection methods in data mining and machine learning to compare and verify the results. Consequently, the results demonstrated that patients with diabetic nephropathy have a higher fatigue level and Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) score than without neuropathy, the presence of neuropathy leads to poor sleep quality, lower quality of life, and poor metabolism. Furthermore, by considering feature selection in selecting representative features or variables, we achieved consistence results with a support vector machine (SVM) classifier and merely ten representative factors and a prediction accuracy as high as 74% in predicting the presence of diabetic nephropathy.

The main purpose of the present study was to explore the associations of sleep duration and sleep quality with self-rated health. In this cross-sectional study, participants were 894 elderly individuals. Self-rated health, sleep duration, and sleep quality were self-reported. The associations were examined using multiple logistic regression analyses.After adjusting for sex, physical activity, smoking consumption, alcohol consumption, psychological distress, socioeconomic status, and chronic disease/s, sleeping <6 h (OR (Odds ratio) = 3.21; 95% CI (95 percent confident interval) 1.61 to 6.39), 6–7 h (OR = 2.47; 95% CI 1.40 to 4.36), 8–9 h (OR = 3.26; 95% CI 1.82 to 5.83), and >9 h (OR = 3.62; 95% CI 1.57 to 8.34) and having ‘poor’ sleep quality (≥5 points; OR = 2.33; 95% CI 1.46 to 3.73) were associated with ‘poor’ self-rated health. When sleep duration and sleep quality were entered simultaneously into the model, the same associations remained. Our findings provide evidence that both ‘short’ and ‘long’ sleep and ‘poor’ sleep quality are associated with ‘poor’ self-rated health. Thus, interventions that promote healthy sleep hygiene in the elderly are warranted.

Both sleep–wake disturbance and malnutrition are common in cirrhosis and might be associated with similar adverse outcomes, such as impaired health-related quality of life, hepatic encephalopathy, and sarcopenia, but there is no study investigating the relationship between these two. We aimed to explore the relationship between sleep–wake disturbance [estimated by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)] and malnutrition risk [estimated by the Royal Free Hospital-Nutritional Prioritizing Tool (RFH-NPT)]. About 150 patients with cirrhosis were prospectively recruited. The nutritional risk is classified as low (0 points), moderate (1 point), and high (2–7 points) according to the RFH-NPT score. A global PSQI &gt;5 indicated poor sleepers. Furthermore, multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to determine the relationship between sleep–wake disturbance and malnutrition. The median PSQI was seven, and RFH-NPT was two in the entire cohort, with 60.67 and 56.67% rated as poor sleep quality and high malnutrition risk, respectively. Patients with cirrhosis with poor sleep quality had significantly higher RFH-NPT score (3 vs. 1, P = 0.007). Our multivariate analyses indicated that male patients (β = 0.279, P &lt; 0.001), ascites (β = 0.210, P = 0.016), and PSQI (β = 0.262, P = 0.001) were independent predictors of malnutrition. In addition, the differences regarding PSQI score were more significant in male patients, as well as those &gt;65 years or with Child-Turcotte-Pugh class A/B (CTP-A/B) or the median model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) &lt;15. Taken together, the sleep–wake disturbance is strongly correlated with high malnutrition risk in patients with cirrhosis. Given sleep–wake disturbance is remediable, it is tempting to incorporate therapies to reverse poor sleep quality for improving nutritional status in patients with cirrhosis.
