Information of rheological behavior of binder paste is important for proportioning high slump concrete mixture at low water to cement ratios. This paper presents experimental data on the rheological property of silica colloid incorporated binder paste using naphthalene based and polycarboxylate based superplasticizer, compared to that of silica fume incorporated binder paste. Experimental data showed that silica colloid incorporated binder is compatible to tested superplasticizers in the all investigated range of silica colloid content, whereas the pastes incorporated with high silica fume content (over 10%) indicated incompatibility, especially to naphthalene based superplasticizer. There was also found out saturated content of superplasticizer corresponding to every kind of binder and water-binder ratio, with and without set retarding admixture.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is one of semiconductor material which has been used as photocatalyst that has very good potency to oxidize some hazardous organic compounds like dye waste, medical and pharmacological waste, and etc. Although TiO2 has high oxidation capacity for photocatalytic degradation, it has some deficiencies which can limit its application as photocatalyst. Those deficiencies are TiO2 is easily agglomerated, its charge carrier is conveniently formed as recombination, and it has low surface area. This article provides a review of a composite which consists of TiO2 as the dispersed phase and SiO2 as the matrix, this composite has better photacatalytic performance than TiO2 itself. SiO2 can increase the surface area of TiO2, prevent the agglomeration of TiO2 particle, and avoid the recombination of TiO2’s charge carrier. Consequently, it can improve the ability of TiO2 to do photocatalytic degradation. Agricultural wastes that consist of high silica content is potentially used as the resource of SiO2 in this composite and biosilica that is produced from natural waste has biocompatible and biodegradable properties. This article also provides it’s application for various dye photocatalytic degradation.

High silica zeolite ZSM-5/glass film was successfully synthesized by an in-situ sol–gel dip-coating process combined with the steam-assisted conversion (SAC) technique with low concentration of the synthesis solution. The resulting zeolite films grown on the glass slide show amphiphilic properties. The growing process and the effect of the concentration of SiO2 in the silica source were examined. The mechanism of the formation of the nanoflake crystals and their wetting behavior was investigated. By simply adding fluorescein in the synthesis solution during the preparation, ZSM-5 films showing luminescence property can be obtained. Furthermore, these ZSM-5 zeolite films are easily modified to exhibit hydrophobic property.

Fast synthesis of high-silica ZSM-5 zeolite through vapor-phase transport (VPT) method was reported in this paper. The synthesized samples were characterized with XRD, FT-IR, XRF, SEM and N2 Absorption. Factors affecting the synthesis of ZSM-5 zeolite such as the alkalinity, the crystallization temperature and time, the quantity of seeds were investigated. With precipitated silica and fumed silica as silica source respectively, the appropriate ratio was studied as follows: (0.04-0.05) Na2O: 1.0SiO2: 15H2O: (0-0.0046)Al2O3: 0.01Seed, the reaction was carried out at 393-413K for 4-24h.

Monodisperse mesoporous silica microspheres (MSM-SF) were successfully prepared through PICA and pseudomorphic transformation using silica fume as original silica source. The structure and morphology of spheres were quantitatively investigated by Zata potential and particle size analyzer, N2 sorption isotherms, XRD, SEM and TEM. The results showed that the monodisperse spherical mesoporous silica microspheres (MSM-SF) exhibited uniform spherical morphology, worm-like mesoporous, large BET surface area of 559.9m2/g; its BJH average pore size diameter and total pore volume are 3.3nm and 0.12cm3/g, respectively. This preparation method provides a new synthetic strategy to control the particle morphology and structure simultaneously, meanwhile this method can also significantly reduce the cost of synthesis of mesoporous silica microspheres.

Silica fume (SF) is a by-product from the production of silicon metal, which has a relatively high silica concentration. The surface modified silica fume (mSF) is treated with (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) as filler in ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) foam. The FTIR spectra of mSF clearly indicated that MPTMS can be successfully bonded to the SF surface. The reinforcing efficiency of mSF-filled EPDM foam insulation indicated that the mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength, modulus, and compression set enhanced higher than in case of SF and calcium carbonate. While the cure characteristics such as the maximum torque (MH), the minimum torque (ML) and the differential torque (MH-ML) are increasing in proportion to increasing filler contents, mainly with mSF. For the cure behavior, the mSF-filled EPDM foam insulation showed the fastest cure time (tc90) and scorch time (ts2) due to reduced accelerator adsorption. Whereas, the calcium carbonate-filled EPDM foam insulation increased the cure time (tc90) and scorch time (ts2), therefore, it also prevents compound scorching. The results indicated that the mSF with MPTMS can be used as an alternative filler for EPDM foam insulation.

Solid waste silica fume was used to replace fly ash by different ratios to study the early-age hydration reaction and strength formation mechanism of concrete. The change pattern of moisture content in different phases and micro morphological characteristics of concrete at early age were analyzed by low field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that the compressive strength of concrete was enhanced optimally when the replacement ratio of solid waste silica fume was 50%. The results of LF-NMR analysis showed that the water content of modified concrete increased with the increase of solid waste silica fume content. The compressive strength of concrete grew faster within the curing age of 7 d, which means the hydration process of concrete was also faster. The micro morphological characteristics obtained by SEM revealed that the concrete was densest internally when 50% fly ash was replaced by the solid waste silica fume, which was better than the other contents.
