Depression and vitamin D deficiency are major public health problems. The existing literature indicates the complex relationship between depression and vitamin D. The purpose of this study was to examine whether this relationship is moderated or mediated by inflammation. A community sample (n = 7162) from the LIFE-Adult-Study was investigated, for whom depressive symptoms were assessed via the German version of CES-D scale and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and inflammatory markers (IL-6 and CRP levels, WBC count) were quantified. Mediation analyses were performed using Hayes’ PROCESS macro and regression analyses were conducted to test moderation effects. There was a significant negative correlation between CES-D and 25(OH)D, and positive associations between inflammatory markers and CES-D scores. Only WBC partially mediated the association between 25(OH)D levels and depressive symptoms both in a simple mediation model (ab: −0.0042) and a model including covariates (ab: −0.0011). None of the inflammatory markers showed a moderation effect on the association between 25(OH)D levels and depressive symptoms. This present work highlighted the complex relationship between vitamin D, depressive symptoms and inflammation. Future studies are needed to examine the effect of vitamin D supplementation on inflammation and depressive symptomatology for causality assessment.

The Israeli Mamanet Cachibol League (MCL) serves as a community model that incorporates physical activity and amateur team sports among women. Team sports have been shown to bridge gaps and build positive relationships between communities. There is a paucity of data regarding the advantages of team sports to promote the health and well-being of women from different ethnic backgrounds. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of participation in MCL with social capital, health, and well-being across two ethnic groups: Jewish and Arab women. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among women aged 25–64: 102 Jewish and 96 Arab MCL participants, and 102 Jewish and 81 Arab non-MCL participants. Data regarding social capital (trust, social support and social involvement) and well-being (self-reported health and psychosomatic and depressive symptoms) were analyzed using two-way analyses of covariance and multiple regression models with sequential entry of the variables. MCL participants from both ethnic groups reported higher social capital (p < 0.001), better self-reported health (p < 0.001), and lower psychosomatic symptoms (p < 0.001) compared to non-participants. Jewish MCL participants reported lower depressive symptoms (p < 0.001) than non-participants, however no difference was found between Arab MCL participants and non-participants (p < 0.160). Amateur team sports such as MCL are related with higher levels of well-being and social capital. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies that examine the change in social capital and well-being over time.

Background.In order to compare estimates by one assessment scale across various cultures/ethnic groups, an important aspect that needs to be demonstrated is that its construct across these groups is invariant when measured using a similar and simultaneous approach (i.e., demonstrated cross-cultural measurement invariance). One of the methods for evaluating measurement invariance is testing for differential item functioning (DIF), which assesses whether different groups respond differently to particular items. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cross-cultural measurement invariance of the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS) in societies with different socioeconomic, cultural, and religious backgrounds.Methods.The study was organised by the International Child Mental Health Study Group. Self-reported data were collected from adolescents residing in 11 countries: Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Indonesia, Montenegro, Nigeria, Palestinian Territories, the Philippines, Portugal, Romania and Serbia. The multiple-indicators multiple-causes model was used to test the RCADS items for DIF across the countries.Results.Ten items exhibited DIF considering all cross-country comparisons. Only one or two items were flagged with DIF in the head-to-head comparisons, while there were three to five items flagged with DIF, when one country was compared with the others. Even with all cross-culturally non-invariant items removed from nine language versions tested, the original factor model representing six anxiety and depressive symptoms subscales was not significantly violated.Conclusions.There is clear evidence that relatively small number of the RCADS items is non-invariant, especially when comparing two different cultural/ethnic groups, which indicates on its sound cross-cultural validity and suitability for cross-cultural comparisons in adolescent anxiety and depressive symptoms.

Background: Subjective memory impairment (SMI) is associated with negative health outcomes including mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. However, ethnic differences in SMI and disparities in risk factors associated with SMI among minority populations are understudied. The study examined the ethnic differences in SMI, whether SMI was associated with depressive symptoms, sleep, and physical activity (PA), and whether the associations vary across racial/ethnic groups. Methods: Participants included 243 African and Asian Americans (including Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean Americans) aged 50 or older. Demographic information, SMI, depressive symptoms, daily sleeping hours, and PA levels were assessed. Results: Vietnamese Americans reported the highest SMI score. Depressive symptoms, sleeping hours, and PA levels were significantly associated with SMI. Depressive symptoms were the only significant factor across all ethnic groups. Significant interaction effects were found between ethnicity and health behaviors in predicting SMI. In particular, Vietnamese American participants with greater depressive symptoms and physical inactivity were significantly more likely to experience SMI compared to other ethnic groups Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate ethnic differences in SMI and its association with depressive symptoms, sleep, and PA, which highlight the importance of considering the unique cultural and historical backgrounds across different racial/ethnic groups when examining cognitive functioning in elderly.

In vitro studies have demonstrated that high density lipoprotein particles (HDL-P) antagonize inflammatory processes. We studied the predictive value of HDL-P and inflammatory markers for incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) and non-CVD, non-cancer, chronic inflammatory-related events. Methods: In the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, we studied 6475 men and women free of overt CVD, baseline age 45-84 years, who had fasting venous samples for lipid profile, lipoprotein particles, and inflammatory markers Interleukin-6 (IL-6), hs-CRP and D-dimer at baseline. Median follow-up was 10.1 years. Poisson regression models predicted non-CVD, non-cancer, chronic inflammatory-related events (death and hospitalization), based on diagnostic codes, n=1054) and CVD events due to coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease requiring revascularization, stroke, peripheral arterial disease, congestive heart failure and CVD or unwitnessed death (adjudicated, n=756). Adjustment was for age, race, gender, clinic, heart rate, smoking, body mass index, blood pressure, blood pressure and lipid lowering medication, diabetes mellitus, plus all lipid, lipoprotein particle and inflammatory variables. Results: Non-CVD, non-cancer, chronic inflammatory-related events were inversely associated with the sum of small+medium HDL-P independent of covariates (relative risk (RR) per standard deviation (95% confidence limits), RR: 0.85 (0.79-0.91, P < 0.0001). Non-CVD, non-cancer, chronic inflammatory-related events were positively associated with IL-6, RR:1.19 (1.11-1.27, P < 0.0001) and D-dimer, RR: 1.10 (1.05-1.16, P < 0.0001). CVD was associated with small+medium HDL-P, RR: 0.90 (0.82-0.99, P < 0.03) and IL-6, RR:1.15 (1.06-1.25 P < 0.0001). hsCRP was unrelated to either outcome after adjustment for other inflammatory markers. Conclusion: The long-term inverse association of small+medium HDL-P with non-CVD, non-cancer, chronic inflammatory-related death and hospitalization was stronger than with fatal and non-fatal CVD in subjects initially free of overt CVD. These findings provide clinical evidence that small+medium HDL-P have anti-inflammatory properties and may rethink the importance of HDL-P beyond CVD.

Background: Depression has been suggested as a potential risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF) through effects on the autonomic nervous system and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis. Current literature examining the prospective relationship between depression and AF is inconsistent and limited to studies performed in predominantly white populations. We determined the relationship of both depressive symptoms and anti-depressant use with incident AF in a multi-ethnic cohort. Methods: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis is a prospective study of 6,814 individuals without clinical cardiovascular disease. Depressive symptoms were assessed at baseline by the 20-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and use of anti-depressant medications. Five CES-D groups were created based on the score distribution in approximate quartiles, and the top quartile split in 2 such that the top group represented persons with a score ≥16, a value commonly used to identify clinically relevant symptoms. Incident AF was identified from study ECGs verified for AF, ICD-9 hospital discharge diagnoses consistent with AF, and, for participants enrolled in fee-for-service Medicare, inpatient and outpatient AF claims data. Results: 6,644 participants (mean age=62; 53% women; 38% white; 28% black; 22% Hispanic; 12% Chinese-American) were included and followed for a median of 13 years. In separate adjusted Cox proportional hazards analyses, a CES-D≥16 (referent=CES-D<2) and anti-depressant use were each associated with higher incidence of AF (Table). Associations did not differ by race or gender (interaction p-values of 0.18 and 0.17 respectively). Similar results were obtained using time-updated measures of depression. Conclusions: Depressive symptoms are associated with an increased risk of incident AF. Further study into whether improving depressive symptoms reduces AF incidence is important.

Background: In experimental animal models, deficiency of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) protects against development of obesity. In addition, elevated circulating levels of PAI-1 are associated in cross-sectional studies with prevalent obesity in humans. However, no studies have investigated the prospective association between PAI-1 and incident obesity. Methods: Plasma PAI-1 levels were measured in a random sample of men and women at baseline (2000-2002) in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis. Obesity was defined as body mass index (BMI) > 30kg/m2. Incident obesity was identified at four follow-up exams (2002-2011) among those who were not obese at baseline. Logistic regression was used to examine the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of prevalent obesity at baseline. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) for time to incident obesity. The covariates used for adjustment included baseline demographics (age, race, sex, center), lifestyle risk factors (physical activity, dietary energy intake, smoking status, alcohol consumption, education), and inflammatory markers (CRP and IL-6). Results: In 839 participants mean age was 59 years old; 59% and 47% of the cohort were female and white, respectively. At baseline, each standard deviation (SD) increase in log(PAI-1) level was associated with an odds ratio (OR) for adjusted prevalent obesity of 2.70 (95% CI: 2.21 - 3.30, p<0.001. This association remained significant after further adjustment for IL-6 and CRP with OR 2.39 (95% CI: 1.94-2.94, p<0.001). Over a median follow-up of 8.5 years, 16% of participants developed obesity. The multivariable adjusted hazard ratio for incident obesity was 1.36 (95% CI 1.09-1.69, p<0.001) per 1 SD increase in log(PAI-1). (Table). Conclusions: Elevated PAI-1 levels are associated with prevalent and incident obesity. These findings are consistent with results from murine studies and provide evidence suggesting a potential role of PAI-1 in the pathogenesis of obesity.
