Higher intakes of fruits, vegetables, and multiple individual nutrients is associated with a lower risk of metabolic syndrome among adults with comorbidities

AbstractThe aim of this systematic review was to identify and summarize evidence for the association between muscle strength (MS) and metabolic syndrome (MetS), and MS and combinations of risk factors for MetS in children and adolescents. Five databases (Medline/PubMed, EBSCO, Scielo, Scopus, and Web of Knowledge) were searched up to November 2019 with complementary reference list searches. Inclusion criteria were studies that investigated the relationship between MS and MetS or MS and combinations of risk factors for MetS in children and adolescents (≤19 years of age). Risk of bias was assessed using standard procedures. From the total of 15,599 articles initially identified, 13 articles were included, representing 11,641 children and adolescents. Higher MS values were associated with lower risk for MetS or combinations of risk factors for MetS (n=11/13 studies). Of the total of included studies, about 23.1% (03/13) were longitudinal and all included studies were classified as having a moderate risk of bias. This review provides preliminary evidence for a beneficial relationship between MS and MetS among children and adolescents. Additionally, although the body of evidence points to the beneficial relationship between higher MS and lower risk for combination of factors for MetS in children and adolescents, this relationship is inconclusive.

AbstractA systematic review and a meta-analysis of observational studies were performed to assess the dose–response relationship between specific types of dairy foods and the risk of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components. Studies of dairy foods and the risk of the MetS and its components published up to June 2016 were searched using PubMed, EMBASE and a reference search. Random-effects models were used to estimate the pooled relative risks (RR) with 95 % CI. Finally, ten cross-sectional studies, two nested case–control studies and twenty-nine cohort studies were included for the analysis. In a dose–response analysis of cohort studies and cross-sectional studies, the pooled RR of the MetS for a one-serving/d increment of total dairy food (nine studies) and milk (six studies) consumption (200 g/d) were 0·91 (95 % CI 0·85, 0·96) and 0·87 (95 % CI 0·79, 0·95), respectively. The pooled RR of the MetS for yogurt (three studies) consumption (100 g/d) was 0·82 (95 % CI 0·73, 0·91). Total dairy food consumption was associated with lower risk of MetS components, such as hyperglycaemia, elevated blood pressure, hypertriacylglycerolaemia and low HDL- cholesterol. A one-serving/d increment of milk was related to a 12 % lower risk of abdominal obesity, and a one-serving/d increment of yogurt was associated with a 16 % lower risk of hyperglycaemia. These associations were not significantly different by study design, study location or adjustment factors. This meta-analysis showed that specific types of dairy food consumption such as milk and yogurt as well as total dairy food consumption were inversely related to risk of the MetS and its components.

Abstract Objectives Metabolically obese normal weight (MONW) individuals are subjects who have a normal body mass index (BMI), but manifest obesity-related metabolic syndrome (MetS). Nevertheless, the prevalence and correlation between MONW and dietary patterns have not been fully explored in Thais. This study aimed to investigate the national prevalence of MONW, determine which dietary patterns are consumed in Thai normal-weight adults and to identify whether those patterns were associated with the risk of MetS and its features. Methods Total 6899 Thais ≥18 years with normal BMI (18.5–22.9 kg/m2) were obtained from the Thai National Health Examination Survey IV. Sociodemographic, eating-habits, anthropometric, blood pressure and biochemical parameters were measured. MONW was diagnosed by the National Cholesterol Education Program/Adult Treatment Panel III within normal BMI. Dietary patterns were determined by means of factor analysis, and were evaluated by multiple logistic regressions for its association with MONW. Results Overall, the weighted prevalence of MONW was 9.9% (95% CI: 9.1–10.6%), particularly, the MONW prevalence was 7.2% (95% CI: 6.5–8.0%) and 13.1% (95% CI: 11.6–14.7%) in male and female respectively. Three major dietary patterns were distinguished: “westernized”, “healthy” and “carbohydrate” patterns. After controlling for potential confounders, compared with the lowest quartile, individuals in the highest quartile of the westernized and carbohydrate pattern were connected with the greater risk of MONW (adjusted odds ratio [OR]: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.25–2.17, P < 0.001) and (OR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.19–2.08, P < 0.05) respectively, whereas subjects in the fourth quartile of healthy pattern reduce the risk of MONW and its components, except for elevated blood pressure and hyperglycemia (OR: 0.68, 95% CI: 0.50–0.92 for MONW, P < 0.05; OR: 0.43, 95% CI: 0.28–0.68 for abdominal obesity, P < 0.001; OR: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.49–0.81 for hypertriglyceridemia, P < 0.001; OR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.54–0.82 for low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C], P < 0.01). Conclusions In Thai normal-weight adults, high consumption of whole grains, fruits, beans, juices, and dairy products is connected with a lower risk of metabolic syndrome and its features, i.e., lower risk of abdominal obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, and low HDL-C. Although nutritional health knowledge serves as the basis for the daily food guides, limited epidemiologic studies were conducted to verify whether adherence to the daily food guides reduced the prevalence of diseases. This study aims to examine whether adherence to the daily food guides relates to the lower risk of having metabolic syndrome, as well as to assess the association between levels of adherence to daily food guides and demographic characteristics. A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan (NAHSIT) 2013–2016. Face-to-face dietary assessments were conducted using a validated food-frequency questionnaire. Six food groups were defined according to the daily food guides in Taiwan. We constructed a daily food guide index to measure the levels of adherence to the daily food guides. Logistic regression was performed to assess the association between the levels of adherence to the daily food guides and the risk of having metabolic syndrome. A total of 2534 participants (51% of females) were included in the final analysis. After adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, education level, marital status, and family income, we found a negative correlation between the levels of adherence to daily food guides and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. The odds ratios (ORs) for the highest versus lowest quartile of the adherence level was 0.65 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.48–0.88). In addition, males, younger age, lower education, divorced, separated, and widowed, and lower family income were associated with lower adherence to daily food guides. In conclusion, participants reporting better adherence to the daily food guides during the past month had a lower risk of having metabolic syndrome.

Background: Physical activity reduces the likelihood of developing metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, the association between different physical activity levels and MetS remains unclear in older adults with obesity. Methods: This cross-sectional study used four waves of data (2007-2008, 2009-2010, 2011-2012, 2013-2014) from two datasets: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and United Sates Department of Agriculture’s Food Patterns Equivalents Database. The sample included adults 60+ years of age (n= 613) with obesity who had physical activity and MetS data. Physical activity was assessed using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire and categorized into three physical activity levels (low, medium, and high); and medium or high physical activity levels are aligned with or exceed current physical activity recommendations. Participants were classified as having MetS using a commonly agreed upon definition. Multiple logistic regression models examined the association between the three physical activity levels and MetS risk factors and MetS. All analyses adjusted for potential confounding variables and accounted for complex sampling. Results: Of 613 respondents, 72.1% (n=431) were classified as having MetS, and 44.3% (n = 263) had not met physical activity recommendations. Participants with high levels of physical activity had a lower risk of MetS (OR = 0.31, 95%CI: 0.13, 0.72) and more healthful levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (OR = 0.39, 95%CI: 0.18, 0.84), blood pressure (OR = 0.39, 95%CI: 0.20, 0.77), fasting glucose (OR = 0.34, 95%CI: 0.15, 0.78) than participants categorized as having low physical activity. Conclusions: Physical activity is associated with lower risk of MetS only for participants with the highest level of physical activity, which suggests that physical activity dosage is important to reduce MetS risk in older adults with obesity.

Objective: To explore the association of famine exposure in early life with the risk of metabolic syndrome (MS) in the ­Chinese adults. Methods: Data were obtained from the wave 2009 of the China Health and Nutrition Survey. MS was identified when 3 or more of the following components happened: (1) waist circumference >90 cm in males or >85 cm in females; (2) fasting glucose ≥6.1 mmol/L; (3) systolic blood pressure ≥130 mm Hg/diabolic blood pressure ≥85 mm Hg; (4) fasting triglyceride ≥1.70 mmol/L; and (5) high-density lipids cholesterol <1.04 mmol/L. All participants were divided into 5 groups: no exposure, born after 1961; fetal life exposure, between 1959 and 1961; early childhood exposure, between 1956 and 1958; mid-childhood exposure, between 1953 and 1955; and late childhood exposure, between 1949 and 1952. A total of 2,080 subjects were included in this study. Results: In rural, famine exposure in fetal life and early childhood was associated with the lower risk of MS (p = 0.0491 and 0.0245; OR 0.583 and 0.703; and OR, 95% CI 0.341–0.998 and 0.517–0.956, respectively). But famine exposure in late childhood was associated with the higher risk of MS (p = 0.0140; OR 3.096; and OR, 95% CI 1.257–7.625). Famine exposure in early childhood was associated with the lower risk of MS (p = 0.0120; OR 0.633; and OR, 95% CI 0.443–0.904) in males. Conclusions: Famine exposure in mid- and late-childhood was associated with the higher risk of MS, especially in rural, males, and severe famine areas.

AbstractRecent epidemiological studies show the association of carotenoids with the metabolic syndrome (MetS), but thorough longitudinal cohort studies regarding this association have not been well conducted. The objective of this study was to investigate longitudinally whether serum carotenoids are associated with the risk of developing the MetS and its components in Japanese subjects. We conducted a follow-up study on 1073 men and women aged 30–79 years at the baseline from the Mikkabi prospective cohort study. Those who participated in the baseline and completed follow-up surveys were examined longitudinally. Over the 10-year period, 910 subjects (295 men and 615 women) took part in the follow-up survey at least once. Over a mean follow-up period of 7·8 (sd 2·9) years, thirty-six men and thirty-one women developed new MetS. After adjustments for confounders, the hazard ratio (HR) for the MetS in the highest tertile of serum β-carotene against the lowest tertile was 0·47 (95 % CI 0·23, 0·95). On the other hand, significantly lower risks for dyslipidaemia were observed in the highest tertiles of serum α- and β-carotene and β-cryptoxanthin (HR 0·66; 95 % CI 0·46, 0·96; HR, 0·54; 95 % CI 0·37, 0·79; and HR 0·66; 95 % CI 0·44, 0·99, respectively). Other significant associations between the risks for obesity, high blood pressure and hyperglycaemia with serum carotenoids were not observed. Our results further support the hypothesis that eating a diet rich in carotenoids might help prevent the development of the MetS and its complications in Japanese subjects.

Introduction Although previous studies have suggested associations between serum intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and metabolic syndrome (MS) in the general population, these associations are still uncharacterized in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Methods In total, 837 prevalent PD patients from 5 centers in China were enrolled between April 1, 2011 and November 1, 2011. The demographic data, biochemical parameters and medical records were collected, except for serum 25(OH)D which was measured in 347 of 837 patients. The definition of MS was modified from National Cholesterol Education Program Third Adult Treatment Panel (NCEP-ATPIII). Results 55.4% of 837 patients were found to have MS. The median concentration of iPTH, 25(OH)D and doses of oral vitamin D analogs for participants with MS was significantly lower than those without MS. The iPTH, 25(OH)D values and doses of vitamin D analogs were all associated with one or more components of MS. After multivariate adjustment, Low serum iPTH values and oral vitamin D analogs, rather than serum 25(OH)D, were significantly associated with the presence of MS, abnormal fasting blood glucose (FBG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Compared to iPTH < 130pg/mL, iPTH 130–585 pg/mL and > 585pg/mL were associated with a lower risk of MS with adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 0.59 and 0.33, respectively. Taking vitamin D analogs was also associated with a lower risk of MS with adjusted OR of 0.55. Conclusions Serum iPTH and the use of active vitamin D supplements rather than serum 25(OH)D were independently associated with the presence of MS in patients on PD.

Abstract Background: Vitamin D deficiency is common around the world, but the association between vitamin D deficiency with metabolic syndrome and its associated diseases is unclear.Methods: A subset of 2393 participants from the Nantong Chronic Diseases Study (NCDS) of 2017-2018 were included in this study.The risk of MS and its associated diseases from low vitamin D levels were assessed by genetic scores using two 25(OH)D synthesis single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (DHCR7-rs12785878 and CYP2R1-rs10741657), one transport SNP (GC-rs2282679) and one catabolism SNP (CYP24A1-rs6013897).Results: Odds Ratios (ORs) for decreased risk of MS and type 2 diabetes (T2D) was 0.73 and 0.79 in the deficient, 0.53 and 0.67 in the insufficient, and 0.54 and 0.60 in the sufficient categories of serum vitamin D levels, respectively. Mendelian randomization analysis showed per 25nmol/L higher genetically instrumented serum 25(OH)D concentration using the two synthesis SNPs: DHCR7+CYP2R1 genes, associated with a 7% lower risk of T2D. The highest tertile vs the lowest tertile of genetic scores using the three SNPs of DHCR7+CYP2R1+GC genes showed a 10% lower risk of T2D. Also, the group with higher genetic scores among these two and three SNPs were both associated with lower risk of abnormal diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (P=0.0162 and 0.0045 respectively).Conclusions: Our Mendelian randomization analysis showed no genetic evidence for a causal role of lower vitamin D level in the development of MS, but showed a causal role in the development of T2D and DBP in middle-aged and elderly participants from rural China.
