The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between BMI and tooth decay in a population of Iranian children. In this cross-sectional descriptive/analytical study, 1482 children were selected from kindergartens and preschool centers in Kerman, Iran. The children underwent examination of deciduous teeth (using the dmft index) after determination of height and weight for calculation of BMI. The relationship between BMI (after adjustment for age) and dmft was determined using Poisson’s regression model. The mean of dmft in children with normal BMI was 1.5-fold that in subjects with extra body weight. Age had a significant effect on dmft. In addition, dmft was higher in boys compared to girls. The results of the present study showed that caries rate in the deciduous teeth of 3–6-year-old children decreases with an increase in body weight.

The present study was conducted to determine the early sex in turkeys by observation of the differences in body weight between male and female birds. A total of 30-day old black color unsexed poults having almost similar body weight at hatching were considered for the experimentation and housed at the Poultry Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh-2202, Bangladesh. All birds were reared up to 12 weeks of age under intensive management with supplementation of commercial broiler starter and grower feeds. Birds were reared under similar management conditions. Significantly higher (p<0.01) body weight was attained in male poults (104g/bird) than the female (90g/bird) at the end of 1st week of age. Similarly, at the end of 2nd week of age higher (p<0.01) body weight attained by male poults (198.31g/bird) than the female (162.13g/bird). At the end of 3rd weeks of age male poults attained higher (p<0.01) body weight (307.23g/bird) than the female (251.33g/bird). After 4 weeks of rearing, male turkeys attained significantly higher (p<0.01) live body weight (424.46g/bird) than the female turkeys (347.87g/bird). The weekly average body weight gains of male and female birds were 94.18g/bird and 76.5g/bird, respectively. Thus, the male and female birds were successfully identified on the basis of differences in their body weight. Weekly feed intake for both the male and female birds was also increased with their age. Up to 4 weeks of age, both the male and female poults consumed same amount of feed (753.46g/bird). The FCR of male and female poults differed non-significantly in 1st, 3rd and 4th week. On the contrary, in 2nd week of age the FCR of male poults (1.60) was significantly lower (p<0.01) than female (2.11). Survivability was 100% up to 4th week of age irrespective of sex of the poults. The birds were reared up to 12 weeks of age until to confirm their sex by observation of the phenotypic appearance. Results of the phenotypic observation of male and female birds correspondence hundred percent accuracy with the results obtained in body weight based differences between male and female birds. It is therefore concluded that farmers can identify male or female poults as early as first week of age on the basis of body weight differences. Progressive Agriculture 31 (3): 218-226, 2020

The general objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Naja nigricollis venom on some vital organs of rabbits. To carry out this study, nine (9) rabbits including five (5) males and four (4) females were divided into two (2) control lots and one (1) experimental lot. Each control lot was composed of three (3) rabbits (males or females) while the experimental lot was comprised of two (2) males and one (1) female. The rabbits of the experimental lot were injected with Naja nigricollis venom for about 20 to 30 minutes and then after the determination of their biochemical and hematological parameters, were autopsied for the removal of organs such as heart, liver, kidneys and lungs. These organs were weighed and their appearance was studied. The results of this study showed that the heart and lungs of control male rabbits weighed more than those of females, whereas the liver and kidneys did not. Then, the cytotoxins of the Naja nigricollis venom were at the origin of gangrene which induced necrosis by an increase in their volume in a general way and degradation of the organs studied. Finally, the dose of venom injected (2 mg/Kg of body weight) could also cause hypotension, so favoring the formation of oedemas and consequently gangrene.

The results of histochemical analysis of three muscles m. triceps brachii (MTB), m. longissimus thoracicus (MLT) and m. rectus femoris (MRF) of two groups of pigs created according to the genotypes MYF 4 are presented. Determination of MYF 4 genotypes was made by PCR method and for histochemical analysis was used 5 animals detected as homozygote MYF 4- AA type and 5 animals of heterozygote genotype myogenin-AB out of the total of 25 individual animals tested. The histochemical analysis proved that homozygotes AA have had bigger fat cells than heterozygotes AB in three studied muscles in average. The size of fat cells in MLT - 41.10?m or 38.50 ?m respectively dominated in both groups of animals. Percentage surface representation of interstitial tissues was higher in the studied muscles of heterozygote MYF 4-AB. The volume of ligaments was the highest in MRF (3.80% or 3.90% respectively) in both groups (myogenin - AA and AB). The average thickness was of three studied muscles muscle fibres higher at homozygote genotype myogenin-AA than in heterozygote myogenin-AB. The thickest fibres in both genotypes were in MRF (88.60 ?m, and 84.72 ?m respectively) and the lowest in MTB (73.30 and 69.40 ?m respectively). The highest values of muscle fibres thickness were detected in ?-White fibres. Their percentage surface representation corresponded to this in all three types of muscles of both studied genotype myogenin groups.

Introduction. Obesity is a disorder of energy balance, which leads to excessive accumulation of fat. In recent years, many important discoveries were made in this field, including the discovery of hormones produced by adipose tissue and the identification of many of the central and peripheral pathways of energy balance.Objective. To study the levels of hormones that affect appetite and metabolism in women with obesity baseline and after weight loss while taking sibutramine.Materials and methods. The study included 56 women aged 42,9±9,5 years, with a BMI of 34,6±6,1 kg/m2. All patients underwent clinical, laboratory and instrumental examination. Hormonal study included determination of serotonin, leptin, ghrelin, endothelin-1, adiponectin.Results: In women with obesity we identified hyperleptinemia and increased serotonin levels. The decrease in body weight in patients receiving sibutramine was accompanied by lower levels of serotonin, leptin, ghrelin, endothelin-1, and increase of adiponectin.Conclusions: Obese patients have significantly elevated levels of leptin, serotonin, ghrelin compared to women of normal weight. Sibutramine treatment leads to a decrease in serotonin, leptin, ghrelin and is more effective in women with a BMI less than 36,5 kg/m2.

Records of female lambs and their parents of the Mis sheep breed have used. All animals are approximately have weaned at 90 days of age. Descriptive statistics, paired sample test, paired differences, measures of association, correlations and regression of body weights between female lambs and their parents have done. A complementary least body weights at 30 days and weaning between dams and lambs but utmost weight at 30 days, the lambs were higher while at weaning, the dams had higher weight. It can observe that the averages on body weights the rams were the highest, followed by lambs and the lowest the dams? body weights. The coefficient of determination of R2 varies from low to high, indicating that the lamb's body weight has more influenced by other factors that we have not considered. There were significant correlations between lamb body weight at birth and sire/dam body weight at birth. The results showed highly significant correlations of lamb's body weight at 30 days with dams but with sires, positive and very low. There had positive but no significant correlation between lamb body weight at weaning and sire body weight at weaning. Lamb body weight at weaning and dam body weight at weaning are highly correlated.

ABSTRACT The penetration of telavancin was 2% into inflamed meninges and ca. 1‰ into noninflamed meninges after two intravenous injections (30 mg/kg of body weight). In experimental meningitis, telavancin was significantly superior to vancomycin combined with ceftriaxone against a penicillin-resistant pneumococcal strain. Against a methicillin-sensitive staphylococcal strain, telavancin was slightly but not significantly superior to vancomycin.

For many years the study of growth has rested mainly on the application of anthropometric techniques and the measurement of height and weight. A few years ago Tanner9 correctly pointed out that studies on body composition were mainly related to body weight and, therefore, added little to the thinking. A more penetrating approach to the study of growth was recommended.2 The present approach,11 documented in part here, has been to apply biochemical and physiological techniques for the measurement of body cell mass, cell size, cell number and, to some extent, cell function. Body function and heat production as well as maturational age have been of concern. These studies have been made in the same children at tile same time. It is anticipated that inspection of these three dimensions of growth, size, function, and maturational age should help to elucidate problems related to growth retardation. In the clinic it is possible to predict cell-extracellular mass of children by applying equations based on relationships between body composition and height and weight. We began by presenting information on growth of muscle and the differences between the sexes with the progress of time and with respect to size and number of cells. Increments in growth rate of the male at adolescence were found. Such differences in cell growth must be related to some extent to the restrictive action of estrogens on cell multiplication in the female and to the stimulating action of androgens in the male. Growth hormone is an important hormone for the multiplication of cells, while insulin is of importance to protein synthesis. Both hormones are needed for growth. Thyroid hormone appears to play a secondary role but is important to protein synthesis especially in early postnatal life. The energy requirement for normal growth is only slightly above the basal state and the visceral cell mass is the most direct standard of reference for heat production. Restriction of nutrition can either retard growth in the size of cells, in the number of cells, or both. Current studies58 show that ingestion of protein and calories incite the secretion of growth hormone and insulin in specific patterns and at appropriate times. Growth hormone has been labelled the "feasting" hormone and insulin tile "feasting" hormone.59 Thus, the subtle relationship between nutrition and cell growth becomes apparent. Of concern is the possibility that overnutrition early in life may program excess secretion of hormones such as insulin or growth hormone. Overnutrition is a major problem in the affluent society, while conservative nutrition is compatible with longevity.6 Hirsch, et al.60 informs us that growth of adipose tissue is mainly by cell number increase–as we have seen for muscle. Again, a steady state of cell number is reached for fat cells. But, obese subjects have an excess of fat cells which do not disappear with time and diet. Such cells become increasingly insensitive to insulin as they enlarge.61 One might view the passing parade of life and growth and observe the relation of the intracellular phase to body weight from infancy to senility (Fig. 12). Here we see the upward increase of cell mass with respect to time and body weight increase. The adult data are taken from F. D. Moore.62 Clearly, with senility we can suspect that more and more of the body weight is extracellular or connective tissue and less and less of the weight is soft tissue or oxidizing protoplasm. Data on body potassium are even more remarkable in this demonstration.11 It is difficult to say with Browning: Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be.... Nevertheless, it is possible that with increased information and research the understanding of these stages of cell growth will be achieved and, no doubt, the departure from the steady state of cell population which occurs at the autumn of our existence– when cancer, and cardiovascular disease supervene–will be understood.63 However, the problems of aging can only be exposed after the physiology of growth is understood.

The endocrine and exocrine activity of guinea pig stomach was measured by the determination of pepsinogen in gastric tissue and in plasma. Gastric juice pepsin was also studied.A significant increase of both pepsinogen and pepsin was found in animals treated with a dose of histamine (75 mg. per kg. of body weight). These results give further evidence that the zymogenic cells of gastric mucosa may be stimulated by histamine. The determination of pepsinogen in gastric tissue seems to permit a direct approach to the enzymatic function of zymogenic cells.

Weight measurement is essential for the management of pediatric patients to calculate the dose of the drugs. But it is not possible to move the child to a weighing scale for determination of body weight when the child is in a critical condition. The purpose of this study was to check if foot length correlates with child’s body weight in our situation and to devise a formula for prediction of weight based on foot– length observed. This Cross-sectional study was carried out in the Department of Pediatrics, Sir Salimullah Medical College, Mitford hospital, Dhaka over a period of 12 months between January 2008 and December 2008. A total of 300 children, between 0 day to five years, meeting the predefined eligibility criteria were included in the study. Using the available data, simple linear regression analysis was performed between the dependent variable weight and independent variable foot length. The estimated linear regression line was: Predicted weight (kg) = a+ [b× foot length]. Data were analyzed using correlation coefficient (r) between foot length and children’s weight. In this study correlation between foot length and weight (r) was 0.92(P<0.001) indicating a perfect linear relationship between them. In the present study determination of correlation (r2) was 0.85 meaning that 85% of the variability in weight might be explained by variation in foot length. The estimated linear regression line was: Predicted weight (kg) = - 4.64 + [1.12 X foot length], where- 4.64 was the intercept and 1.12 was the slope of the regression line. Comparison between measured weight and predicted weight revealed that94% of variation between measured weight and predicted weight was within ±2kg. More than half of the cases (58.3%) the above-mentioned variations were within ±1kg.  This study concluded, there was a strong correlation between foot length and weight in children up to five years. The body weight in children from 0 days up to the age of 5 years can be predicted from foot length. Prediction of weight simply by foot-length measurement could be a great help to the health care provider including doctors and health workers for drug dose calculation in critically ill children.
