Relationship between CEO's personality and company's entrepreneurial orientation: the case of SMEs

Abstract Entrepreneurial orientation (EO) is a key factor in the creation and development of companies. This study examines the CEO's personal background (personality, proactivity and resistance to change) and its influence on the EO of the organization to determine which factors enhance or weaken EO. We achieve this goal through quantitative research, developing a structural equations model with partial least squares to analyse a sample of 358 Spanish SMEs from different sectors. The results suggest that specific personality dimensions exert substantial influence on the organization's EO. We also analyse individual proactivity and resistance to change as conduits for the effect of personality dimensions on the company's EO.

Social media applications have been increasingly gaining significant attention from online education and training platforms. Social networking tools provide multiple advantages for communicating, exchanging opinions, and discussing specific issues. Social media also helps to improve the processes of teaching and learning through sharing educational programs. In this study, we used a quantitative research technique based on the partial least-squares (PLS) linear regression method to determine the influence of using social media as an online discussion and communication platform for academic purposes by assessing the relationships among the skills obtained through social media, the usage of social media, and the purpose of social media. A total of 200 students participated in this study (88% female and 12% males), and a purposive sampling technique was used to select a suitable population for the study. The results show that 61.5% of the participants use the web daily for more than five hours, mainly for social communication (meaningful dialog and discussion skills) and entertainment. The students agreed that social media develops their creative thinking, but it has no positive impact on their academic performance.

The main objective of this chapter is to analyze the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and competitive advantage on Portuguese exporting textiles small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Therefore, a quantitative methodological approach was used, conducting a descriptive, exploratory, and transversal empirical study, having applied a questionnaire to a sample of Portuguese SMEs, associated of the Portuguese textile association (ATP). The structural equations model was used for this purpose, using the partial least squares (PLS). Based on survey data from 247 firms, the empirical results indicate that 1) innovation have a positive and significant impact on differentiation, 2) proactivity and risk-taking does not have a positive and significant impact on differentiation, and 3) innovation, proactivity, and risk-taking does not have a positive and significant impact on cost leadership. This study shows that Portuguese textile SMEs seek to support and stimulate new ideas, experimentation, and creativity that surely result in new products, services, and processes.

This study's main objective is to determine the influence of innovation and cooperation on the competitiveness of SMEs in the metal-mechanic sector of Andalusia (Spain). Using information obtained by interviewing managers of a sample of 80 firms, we proposed a model of structural equations based on the Partial Least Squares (PLS) technique. This model, which explained 37% of the variability of competitiveness, also allowed us to test hypotheses about the positive influence of quality management, knowledge, financial resources and cooperation on innovative outcomes. Along with the contrasted hypotheses, the most noteworthy finding was that cooperation does not significantly influence the innovative outcomes of firms in this sector.

Modeling using structural equations, is a second generation statistical data analysis technique, it has been positioned as the methodological options most used by researchers in various fields of science. The best known method is the covariance-based approach, but it presents some limitations for its application in certain cases. Another alternative method is based on the variance structure, through the analysis of partial least squares, which is an appropriate option when the research involves the use of latent variables (for example, composite indicators) prepared by the researcher, and where it is necessary to explain and predict complex models. This article presents a brief summary of the structural equation modeling technique, with an example on the relationship of constructs, sustainability and competitiveness in iron mining, and is intended to be a brief guide for future researchers in the engineering sciences. The purpose of this study is to check whether the image of a country can be configured by the interaction of cognitive and emotional experiences with the functional, hedonic, and symbolic benefits perceived by the visitor. It is intended to verify whether this multidimensional image facilitates the connection between people's familiarity with the country, its reputation, and their satisfaction. A non-probabilistic convenience sample has been used. An online questionnaire has been applied. In total, 1812 valid answers have been obtained. Through a structural equations model (SEM), the quantitative analysis has been developed. This study revealed that the country's image has a multidimensional configuration that positively connects people's familiarity with a country with its reputation and with visitor satisfaction. This proposed new approach to configure the image of a country based on its visitors can be a key tool for implementing destination marketing strategies.

In recent years, firms’ sustainable management has been considered a key factor in the achievement of profits, but few studies analyze the antecedents and effects of eco-innovation. Our study proposes a model to analyze the factors that affect eco-innovation, as well as eco-innovation’s effects on dynamic ambidexterity. To pursue this goal, we developed a research model with panel data from 449 firms over five years from the telecom industry and tested the model using structural equations and partial least squares (PLS). Our results demonstrate the influence of R&D expenditure on eco-innovation. They show a slightly ordered sequence of exploration and exploitation results, indicating that some equilibrium between the two orientations is necessary. The study thus shows that eco-innovation facilitates ambidexterity in that exploration and exploitation alternate dynamically in the search for economic profit.

The study aims to analyze the University Social Responsibility (USR) policy implemented at the Michoacan State University (Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo - UMSNH) from the perspective of the university community. For that purpose, a Structural Equations Model in its variant of Partial Least Squares (PLS) was used from a theoretical/empirical construct on the USR. Five variables integrated into 17 indicators were used, obtained by a representative sample. The results are presented in two sections; a) USR performance at the UMSNH and; b) the role of each variable in the PLS model. It is concluded that the performance was regular and the Internal Management (IM) had a key impact on the model operation. In the management practice, this might help identify areas to improve the performance of this policy by sector and variables.

This study investigated the effects of personality on participation in decision making in a sample of 225 business students. The Neo-FFI scale was used to measure the five personality dimensions of openness, agreeableness, extroversion, conscientiousness and neuroticism. Analysis indicated that personality dimensions, extroversion and conscientiousness, influenced participation. No participation influence was observed for other personality variables. Partial Least Squares modeling indicated that the extroversion and conscientiousness influences were mediated by other variables. The effect of extroversion was fully mediated by an intervening variable representing the choice to use competitive strategies for achieving success. The effect of conscientiousness was mediated by citizenship behavior as well as the choice to use competitive strategies.

This research article aims to establish whether equitable management by managers improves the personal role of their employees thanks to the skills acquired in the work and if this improvement of the personal role could mediate the relationship between equitable management and identification with the company. The method used was a self-reported questionnaire to 19 working groups led by a manager, 398 women and 413 men. Structural equations by partial least squares (SEM-PLS) are applied. Results: the equitable behavior of the managers favors the personal life of the employees although the relationship and its intensity are not high. The models with a mediating variable of work-life enrichment explain the relationship between an equitable management with the identification with the company. Other results and differences between sexes and the gender of the manager are discussed.RESUMENEste artículo de investigación pretende establecer si la gestión equitativa por parte de los gerentes mejora el rol personal de sus empleados gracias a las habilidades adquiridas en el trabajo y si esta mejora del rol personal pudiera mediar la relación entre la gestión equitativa y la identificación con la empresa. El método empleado fue un cuestionario auto-informado a 19 grupos de trabajo dirigidos por un gerente/a, 398 trabajadoras y 413 trabajadores. Se aplican ecuaciones estructurales por mínimos cuadrados parciales (SEM-PLS). Resultados: la conducta equitativa de los gerentes favorece la vida personal de los/las empleados, aunque la relación y su intensidad no son elevados. Los modelos con variable mediadora de enriquecimiento laboral – vida personal explican en mayor medida la relación entre una gestión equitativa con la identificación con la empresa. Se discuten otros resultados y las diferencias entre sexos y el sexo del gerente.RESUMOEste artigo de pesquisa visa estabelecer se a gestão eqüitativamente pelos gerentes melhora o papel pessoal de seus trabalhadores graças às habilidades adquiridas no trabalho e se essa melhoria do papel pessoal poderia mediar a relação entre gestão equitativa e identificação com a empresa. Método: questionário auto-relatado para 19 grupos de trabalho liderados por um gestor, 398 trabalhadores homens e 413 trabalhadores mulheres. Equações estruturais são aplicadas por mínimos quadrados parciais (SEM-PLS). Resultados: o comportamento equitativo dos gerentes favorece a vida pessoal dos trabalhadores, embora o relacionamento e sua intensidade não sejam altos. Modelos com uma variável mediadora de enriquecimento do trabalho - vida pessoal explicam em maior grau a relação entre a gestão equitativa e a identificação com a empresa. Outros resultados e diferenças entre os sexos e o gênero do gerente são discutidos.
