SummaryOne hundred and twelve indigenous gilts and sows were used in two trials to study the effects of strepcillin (a mixture of streptomycin and penicillin) at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 g/t feed in a basal 15% protein diet and strepcillin at 0, 25, and 50g/t feed in rations containing 12, 15 and 18% protein, on the reproductive performance of pigs.Reproductive performance in terms of sow net gain in weight through the reproductive cycle, average birth weight of live pigs per litter and number of pigs weaned per litter were significantly affected by antibiotic levels. The dietary level of 50 g antibiotic/t feed gave the highest reproductive performance though at higher levels no adverse effects on reproductive performance were obtained.Reproductive performance of pigs was significantly influenced by protein and antibiotic levels. A significant interaction between antibiotic and protein levels was obtained for weight loss in sows at parturition and lactation, net gain in weight through the reproductive cycle, total and live pigs farrowed per litter.

This study aims to determine the effect of supplementary feeding on the reproductive performance of beef cattle and calf birth weight. Additional feed is given to cows who are pregnant (8-9 months) and after giving birth for 3 months. Additional feed provided is a complete feed prepared from local feed ingredients. The objectives of this supplementary feeding are: maintaining the condition of the mother's body, maintaining normal embryo growth, and accelerating postpartum estrus, as has been done in Megal Village, Pamotan District, Rembang Regency. Provision of additional feed to old pregnant beef cattle (8-9 months) and after giving birth for 3 months in Megal Village, Pamotan District, Rembang Regency. The conclusion of this study is that the provision of additional feed 5 kg / head / day to old pregnant beef cattle and after giving birth for 3 months can reduce the weight loss of beef cattle broods when the availability of feed is limited, increase birth weight of calves and accelerate postpartum estrus. estrus for the first time after childbirth). Provision of additional feed to late pregnant beef cattle and after giving birth is highly recommended, especially in areas where the availability of feed fluctuates.Key words: supplementary feed, reproduction, beef cattle

Abstract The beneficial effects of dietary fiber on sows performance have been widely studied, but it’s still unclear how fermentable fiber affects sows glucose metabolism and reproduction. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of late gestational inulin supplementation on sows pre-farrowing glucose metabolism and reproductive performance. A total of 106 sows were allotted randomly to 2 groups, receiving either a control diet with 4% wheat flour, or a diet with 4% inulin, from gestation day 85 to 110, both diets met nutrient requirements expressed by NRC. On day 111, sows blood glucose was tested before a common lactation diet meal, then subsequent glucose levels were measured at 1, 2 and 3 hour after meal. Sows were weighed on initial, entry and weaning days. The numbers of live-born and stillborn piglets as well as mortality were recorded. Inulin supplementation didn’t affect sows average daily intake during lactation, and also no significant difference was observed in weaning bodyweight and backfat thickness between two groups. However, the relative wean to entry BW loss was significantly lower in inulin fed sows than control (11.3% vs 13.5%) (P< 0.05). Moreover, postprandial glucose response was less steep in inulin group compared with control, especially glucose concentration at 1h after meal was 10.2% higher in the control group sows. Although the sows farrowing duration was similar in two groups, inulin significantly increased (P< 0.05) proportion of born alive from 90.1% to 93.0% and reduced (P=0.10) still born from 7.3% to 5.4%. Post-foster mortality and livability did not differ between treatments, litter birth weight and average birth weight were not different either. In conclusion, Sows fed 4% inulin diet at late gestation tended to have lower weight loss, slower rate of postprandial blood glucose response and higher born alive and lower stillborn.

Feeding and management during gestation focuses on preparing the sow for parturition and lactation. Despite improvements in husbandry in recent years, mortality remains around 10% and may be increasing (Herpin et al., (1993). Cole, (1990) found that foetal growth rate in the last trimester of pregnancy increases dramatically compared with early and mid-gestation and Cromwell et al., (1989) reported that a 75% increase in feed intake during the last 23 days of gestation increased reproductive performance and also increased birth weight of piglets (1.48 vs. 1.44, P < 0.003). Results from previous studies have also shown that an increase in feed intake from 2.3 kg to 3.9 kg per day can reduce sow backfat loss during the reproductive cycle and increases reproductive life (Miller et al., 2000). The study reported here investigated the influence of three different diet forms fed to gestating gilts for 14 days pre-farrowing, on litter characteristics at birth.

An experiment was conducted at AZ-Zahra Farm, Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia to investigate the productive and reproductive performance of Saanen dairy goat. Body weight at different ages were collected once while birth weight was collected when does gave birth. On the other hand, milk production of each individual per day was received continuously for three months. The data on reproductive parameters such as length of estrus cycle, duration of estrus period, age at puberty, gestation length, age at first kidding, litter size, birth weight and kid mortality were noted. Descriptive statistics such as number, percentage, mean, standard deviation were performed. T-test was also conducted to know the statistical difference between the groups. Result demonstrated that body weight increases significantly (p<0.01) with the advancement of the age. The highest daily milk yield was found in 2-3 years of age. Dam with multiple kids produced more milk than dam with single kid. Estrus cycle of Saanen goats was found 21 days, the average estrus period duration was 2.75 days, age at puberty was 8.33 months, first kidding age was 14.2 months and gestation period was 150 days on an average. With the increase of the age of dam litter size increased. Meanwhile average birth weight increased as age of dam increased from 2.85 kg in 1 year to 3.26 kg in 3 years. Male kids born heavier than females (3.23±0.62 vs. 2.75±0.58 kg) and single kids were heavier than twin kids (3.07±0.66 kgvs2.70±0.28 kg). Low mortality rate of kids was recorded in this study (6.4%). It can be concluded that the overall productive and reproductive performances of Saanen goat at AZ-Zahra farm were within the acceptable level and the variation recorded in different parameters is very much usual. AbstractA study was conducted to evaluate the effect of decreasing age of puberty on lifetime productivity in sows. Two lines of gilts from the Nebraska Gene Pool population were used in this study: a line that had been selected for decreased age at puberty (AP) and a line in which selection had been random (RS). The study was conducted in two parts. In part one, 75 gilts were mated at second oestrus and the productivity measured over five parities. A second experiment utilizing 68 gilts was conducted to provide further data for comparing litter size at parity 1, and also to compare ovulation rates in the two lines at second oestrus. Results showed that litter size was similar in both lines across parities. After five parities the percentage of sows farrowing relative to parity 1 was 58-8% for the AP line but only 39·4% for the RS line (P = 0·17). Litter birth weight, litter size and weight at 21 days, number weaned, and lactation food consumption were similar for both lines. Lactation weight loss was not significantly different between the two lines (60·9 (s.e. 5·9) v. 527 (s.e. 5·0) kg, for RS and AP gilts, respectively) but was consistent with the slightly longer weaning to remating intervals in the RS line (7·8 (s.e. 0·7) v. 6·6 (s.e. 0·7) days, P = 0·22). Ovulation rate at second oestrus did not differ between the two lines (14·1 (s.e. 0·9) v. 14·3 (s.e. 0·5), for RS and AP gilts, respectively). The regression of mean accumulative productivity on time was in favour of the AP line (P = 0·05). These results suggest that reproductive performance is not impaired in gilts which have been selected to reach puberty at earlier ages, and productivity at a specific age may be enhanced.

The reproductive performance of 308 boars with total records of 9220 matings from a large commercial farm was analysed. The boars were purebred Large White, Landrace and from the newly synthesized M breed and were mated to purebred and crossbred sows of the same breeds. The M breed was derived from crossing between Large White and Landrace pigs with foundation females selected on the basis of their ability to produce large litters. Over half the total records were from matings with sows of parity 1 and parity 2. Overall production statistics were 78.8 per cent conception rate, an average total litter size of 9.3 pigs born per litter, 6.5 per cent stillbirths, an average litter weight (live piglets) at birth of 12.2 kg, average birth weight per piglet of 1.43 kg and average gestation length of 11 5 days. Most of the traits analysed showed significant effects due to parity of dams, with performance increasing from parity 1 to parity 6 to 8, after which the performance began to decline. There were significant heterosis effects (mainly maternal) on reproduction of the sows and survival performance of the litters resulting in an estimated improvement of 11 per cent in number of live pigs born, 12.4 per cent in total litter weight at birth and 35 per cent reduction in stillbirths. Heritability estimates were generally low for most traits except for boar conception rate which was moderate (0.29).

In a multigeneration reproduction study, tara gum or α-cellulose was administered to male and female Charles River CD rats as a dietary admixture at levels of 5% (50,000 ppm) through 3 successive generations. All matings consisted of 10 males and 20 females per group. All litters were maintained until they were at least 21 days old (end of lactation). Fertility was generally high, and there were no consistent, statistically significant, compound-related adverse effects on any of the parameters evaluated. It is concluded that tara gum, fed at a dietary level of 5% for 3 successive generations, did not adversely affect reproductive performance. In a study designed to assess embryotoxicity and teratogenicity, tara gum was administered as a dietary admixture to mated female rats at levels of 12,500,25,000, and 50,000 ppm from days 6 to 16 postcoitum. No deaths occurred and no compound-related signs or symptoms were observed. Necropsy findings were negative. Examination of fetuses yielded no evidence of embryonic and/or teratogenic potential of tara gum.

AbstractA total of 315 first parity sows were used in two experiments to establish the lactational and subsequent reproductive performance of first-litter sows in response to varying levels of dietary amino acids and digestible energy (DE) offered during lactation. In the first experiment, sows were offered five diets ranging in lysine content from 6·2 to 15·1 g/kg. In the second experiment sows were offered five diets with a similar lysine: DE ratio (0·88 to 0·85 g/MJ) but ranging in DE content from 12·6 to 15·1 MJ/kg. Voluntary food intake during lactation was unaffected by lysine or DE content of the diets. Piglet pre-weaning growth was similarly unaffected by dietary DE content but responded in a curvilinear manner with increasing dietary lysine. Sow body-weight loss during lactation was unaffected by dietary lysine but declined with increasing DE content up to 13·8 MJ/kg. Backfat loss was lowest for sows offered the lowest lysine diet and tended to reach a plateau at a dietary level of 10·6 g lysine per kg. In response to dietary DE content, backfat loss tended to be highest for sows offered the diet of lowest DE content and declined with increasing DE content up to 15·1 MJ DE per kg. The subsequent weaning to remating interval was unaffected by dietary DE content. Subsequent litter size was similarly unaffected by dietary DE content but was significantly higher for sows offered the two higher, compared with the two lower, lysine diets (10·7 v. 9·6 born alive, s.e.d. 0·5, P < 0·05). The results suggest that current amino acid recommendations for lactating first-litter sows are inappropriate and may be constraining both milk production and subsequent reproductive performance.

Once recombinant human erythropoietin (r-HuEPO) was introduced in daily practice, huge steps were made in combating the adverse effects induced by anemia in chronic kidney disease population. Still, r-HuEPO resistance and the doses ensuring the maximum therapeutic benefit remain matters of debate. The aim of our study was to assess the correlation between the presence and the degree of inflammation and the r-HuEPO requirements in chronic dialysis patients. We conducted a 2 years prospective study on 146 patients undergoing chronic dialysis treated with r-HuEPO. Based on their average CRP (C-reactive protein) levels, obtained from repeated samplings at 3 months interval, 3 groups were formed; we noted in each group the average values of r-HuEPO prescribed to achieve the optimum hemoglobin levels according to the dialysis best practice guidelines and all the adverse effects of the therapy. A direct correlation was observed between CRP levels and r-HuEPO requirements in the first 2 groups of patients (CRP under 6 mg/L and CRP values 6-20 mg/L), with significant increase in r-HuEPO doses between groups (p [ 0.001); the third group, CRP values over 20 mg/dL, showed a minor, insignificant increase in average r-HuEPO doses compared to mild inflammation group (p = 0.199) and more adverse effects of the therapy (p [ 0.05). Inflammation is an important determinant of anemia in chronic dialysis patients and can induce an increase in the doses of r-HuEPO. However, prescribing excessive r-HuEPO doses is not the answer in severe inflammatory status, due to lack of response and possible adverse effects.

Abstract Most sows are fed a constant energy and amino acid supply throughout gestation, in line with the recommendations of most authorities and swine genetic companies. These recommendations for sow feeding have seen little change in decades, despite the many ways that sows have changed dramatically in reproductive performance. Beginning in about the year 2000, sow litter size has steadily increased as a result of genetic selection. With this increase in litter number has been a steady decline in birth weight, and the resulting negative effects of lower birthweight on subsequent piglet performance. Many experiments using so-called ‘bump’ feeding, or increased energy intake in late gestation, have been conducted in attempts to arrest this decline in birthweight and piglet performance. Generally, these experiments have shown little to no improvement in birthweight and often have negative effects on sow feed intake during gestation. These experiments have ignored the fact that the energy:amino acid ratios (lysine, threonine, isoleucine, tryptophan) in late gestation are different than during early and mid-gestation. In recent research in Australia we hypothesised that rapidly increasing essential amino acid levels in late gestation would increase birth weight and potentially improve subsequent reproductive performance. Three hundred and thirty-four multiparous PIC sows (average parity 3.6, average LW 261 kg) were housed in a dynamic gestation pen after mating and randomly assigned to one of two diet regimes. Two 13.5 MJ/kg DE gestation diets were formulated and created by blending in an ESF. The Control diet contained 0.48 g SID lysine per MJ DE and SID threonine, methionine+ cysteine, isoleucine and tryptophan at 68%, 65%, 58% and18% of SID lysine and offered at 2.2kg/day from d 28 to d 110. Sow were then moved to the farrowing house and placed on a lactation diet at 3.5kg/d. The Treatment diet contained 0.55 g SID lysine/MJ DE and SID threonine, methionine+cysteine, isoleucine and tryptophan at 78%, 65%, 60% and 20% of SID lysine and offered at 2.1kg/d from d 28 to d 85 and then increased to 2.4 kg/d to d 110 d. Increasing essential amino acid levels in late gestation increased gestational weight gain (5.6 kg, P=0.004), increased total litter birth weight (1.25 kg, P=0.003), and increased the birthweight of liveborn pigs from 1.286 to 1.329 kg, (P=0.04). There was no significant effect on the total number born or born alive. Piglet performance is not available because this commercial farm practices cross-fostering. Effects of continuation of this feeding regime in the same sows during subsequent parities is currently being evaluated.
