SummaryUpland rice (Agbede) and swamp rice (BG 79) varieties grown on flooded soil, and on soil maintained at 80 and 100% moisture saturation were sprayed with solutions containing 0 ppm (MO), 10 ppm (Ml), and 20 ppm (M2) of manganese.The M 2 treatment depressed total dry weight and dry weights of leaf laminae, stems, leaf sheaths and root of both varieties grown on soil maintained at either 80 or 100% moisture saturation. The M 1 treatment increased the ear weight of Agbede grown on soil maintained at either 80 or 100% moisture saturation, while the M 2 treatment increased the ear weight of plant grown on saturated soil. In flooded soil both the M 1 and M 2 treatments significantly increased dry weight of Agbede plants, but only the M 2 treatment increased ear dry weight of BG 79. The ear weight of Agbede plants receiving M 0 and M 1 treatment decreased with increasing soil moisture while that of BG 79 increased.It is considered that manganese supply limits yield of Agbede grain grown on flooded soil.

Background: The beneficial elements availability such as silicon was determined rice growth and yield. Rice requires a different dose of silicon during the growing period. Experiment was aimed to investigate the effect of silicate levels, rice varieties and the interaction of the two on the growth and yields of two local Indonesian varieties of rice. Methods: A completely randomized design of factorial pattern with 4 replications was used in the experiment. Treatments consisted of No added SiO2 (Si-0); added 100 and 200 kg SiO2 ha-1, respectively for Si-100 and Si-200 and two local rice varieties, Pandan wangi (P1) and Mentik susu (P2). Result: The treatment had no significant effect on growth and yield of rice. Addition of 100 and 200 kg SiO2 ha-1 to P1 and P2 did not show a significant difference on the growth and yield of rice compared to control (P0). Plant height and root dry weight at P1 was lower than P2, but the 1,000-grain weight was showed, vice versa. Silicon addition up to 200 kg SiO2 ha-1 may not be recommended to be applied in rice cultivation, especially Pandan wangi and Mentik susu varieties. Improving the two varieties, further research is needed by increasing the silicon doses.

Abstrak Evaluasi karakter morfologi akar telah dilakukan untuk menentukan karakter morfologi akar yang potensial sebagai indikator adanya kekurangan air pada padi (Oryza sativa L.) di antara panjang akar, volume akar, berat basah akar, berat kering akar, rasio akar:tajuk dan rasio panjang akar:tinggi tanaman. Eksperimen ini dilakukan di rumah kaca dan menggunakan 2 varietas padi (Superwin dan IR 64) pada fase vegetatif  yang ditumbuhkan pada media tanah di polybag dengan perlakuan kekeringan (tidak disirami selama 14 hari) dan disirami sampai kapasitas lapang (kontrol). Panjang akar dan rasio panjang akar:tinggi tanaman dapat dijadikan indikator kekurangan air pada padi Superwin dan IR 64. Superwin yang merupakan padi sawah dapat dipertimbangkan untuk ditanam di lahan kering. Kata kunci: indikator, kekeringan, morfologi akar Abstract Root-morphological characters in rice (Oryza sativa L.) were evaluated to determine the potential characters as water-deficit indicators among the length, volume, fresh weight, dry weight, ratio root:shoot and ratio root length:plant height. The experiment was conducted in the glasshouse using 2 rice varieties (cv. Superwin and IR 64) grown in the soil mixture at the vegetative phase. The treatments in this experiment were water deficit (without water for 14 days) and well-watered (watering until field capacity). The root length and ratio root length:plant height were potential as water- deficit indicators in Superwin dan IR 64. SummaryGrowth and nutrient uptake by an upland rice variety, Agbede and a swamp rice variety, BG 79, were studied under four different soil moisture regimes (60, 80, 100% soil moisture saturation and flooding).BG 79 (Swamp rice) ultimately attained greater mean total dry weight than Agbede (Upland rice), except in the flooding treatment, where the reverse applied. For both, 100% soil moisture saturation gave the greatest total dry weight increase, whereas the driest soil depressed dry-matter production: plants grown on soil maintained at 80% moisture saturation ultimately attained greater mean total dry weight than those grown on flooded soil. Flooded plants of the swamp rice outyielded plants grown on soil maintained at 80% moisture saturation, but the reverse applied to the upland rice.Total leaf numbers were usually greater in BG 79 than in Agbede during the tillering and mid-vegetative stages. Increase in the soil moisture up to complete saturation increased the total leaf number in both varieties.Mean leaf area was greater in Agbede than in BG 79 during the tillering and midvegetative stages. During these two periods of growth the 100% saturation treatment produced plants with the greatest leaf area, whereas 60% soil moisture saturation produced plants with the smallest leaf area in both varieties.BG 79 had more shoots than Agbede. During tillering saturated and flooded soil encouraged the production of shoots in both varieties, but the driest soil prolonged the tillering period, especially in BG 79. Final shoot number tended to decrease with decreasing soil moisture. The percentage shoot mortality in Agbede was not significantly affected by soil moisture regimes, but BG 79 plants grown on the driest and saturated soil had significantly greater percentages of shoot mortality than flooded plants. In both varieties, plants grown on the driest soil had significantly greater percentage shoot mortality than those grown on soil maintained at 80% moisture saturation.Mean Relative Leaf Growth Rate and Net Assimilation Rate were significantly faster in BG 79 than in Agbede variety, but the reverse applied with regard to Leaf Weight Ratio.In both varieties flooded plants had the lowest concentration of manganese, especially during tillering. The small adsorption of Mn with flooding is attributed to a probable antagonism between iron and manganese.

Abstrak. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan diTaman Teknologi Pertanian (TTP) Jantho Kecamatan Kota Jantho, Kabupaten Aceh Besar, dan Laboratorium Fisiologi Tumbuhan Fakultas Pertanian Universitas Syiah Kuala, yang berlangsung sejakbulan Agustus hingga Desember 2016. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan petak terpisah (split plot design), dengan dua faktor yaitu dosis pupuk kompos jerami dan varietas. Dosis pupuk kompos jerami menjadi petak utama yang terdiri atas 3 taraf yaitu (kontrol, 10 dan 20 ton ha-1), varietas menjadi anak petak yang terdiri atas 2 taraf yaitu (Situ Patenggang dan Sanbei). Peubah yang diamati meliputi tinggi tanaman, jumlah daun, jumlah anakan, dan berat berangkasan kering. Perlakuan dosis pupuk kompos jerami berpengaruh sangat nyata terhadap tinggi tanaman pada umur 4 dan 8 MST. Perlakuan varietas berpengaruh sangat nyata terhadap jumlah daun pada umur 4 dan 8 MST. Terdapat interaksi antara kompos jerami dan varietas terhadap jumlah anakan, jumlah daun dan berat berangkasan kering. Dosis pupuk kompos jerami yang terbaik terhadap pertumbuhan padi gogo  pada tanah ultisol adalah 20 ton ha-1. Pertumbuhan padi gogo terbaik pada tanah ultisol dijumpai pada varietas sanbei. Kombinasi terbaik terhadap pertumbuhan padi gogo pada tanah ultisol adalah dosis pupuk kompos jerami 20 ton ha-1 dengan varietas sanbei.The Effect of Straw Compost Fertilizer on the Growth of Two Gogo Rice Varieties (Oryza sativa L.) in Ultisol SoilAbstract. This research was conducted in the Agricultural Technology Park (ATP) of Jantho, Kota Jantho Subdistrict, Aceh Besar Regency, and Laboratory of Plant Physiology at the Faculty of Agriculture, Syiah Kuala University, which lasted from August to December 2016. The study used a split plot design, with two factors are doses of straw compost fertilizer and varieties. The doses of straw compost became the main plot consisting of 3 levels, namely (control, 10 and 20 tons ha1), the varieties being subplots consisting of 2 levels namely (Situ Patenggang and Sanbei). The variables observed included plant height, number of leaves, number of tillers, and dry weight. The treatment of straw compost doses significantly affected plant height at age 4 and 8 WAP. The treatment of varieties had a very significant effect on the number of leaves at ages 4 and 8 WAP. There were interactions between straw compost and varieties on the number of tillers, number of leaves and weight of dry stover. The best dose of straw compost for padigogo growth in ultisol soil is 20 tons ha-1. The best growth of upland rice on ultisol soil was found in sanbei varieties. The best combination of the growth of upland rice on ultisol soil is the dose of straw compost fertilizer 20 tons ha-1 with varieties of sanbei.

This study aims to test the bio-fertilizer formulation with Bacillus cereus bioactivator and to obtain the best bio-fertilizer formulation for the growth and yield of upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) in peat medium. The research was conducted in the experimental garden and Soil Science Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Riau from July to October 2018. The study was carried out experimentally using a completely randomized design (RAL) with the treatment tested was the formulation of Bacillus cereus (F): F0: 100 ml Bacillus cereus without formulation, F1: 100 ml Bacillus cereus inoculant+74% bagasse+13% dolomite+13% zeolite, F2: 100 ml Bacillus cereus inoculant+74% rice husk+13% zeolite+13% dolomite, F3: 100 ml inoculant Bacillus cereus+74% solid+13% dolomite+13% zeolite, F4: 100 ml Bacillus cereus inoculant+74% tkks+13% zeolite+13% dolomite. The data obtained were analyzed statistically using variance fingerprints. The average result of the analysis was continued with the BNJ test at the 5% level. The results showed that administration of Bacillus cereus without formulation and with the formulation of solid organic matter of rice husks, solids and oil palm empty bunches showed a good response to the amount of chlorophyll and yield of upland rice plants.

Field experiments were conducted at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana (Punjab) to study the effect of different agronomic aspects of bed planting on growth and yield of rice during Kharif seasons of 2012 and 2013. The 30 days old seedlings of both rice varieties PR-118 (V1) and PR-116 (V2) were transplanted on 15th June (D1), 30th June (D2) and 15th July (D3). The two rice varieties were transplanted under bed planting (M1) and conventional planting (M2) methods respectively. The results showed that growth parameters like number of tillers per plant, dry weight per plant leaf area index (LAI) and plant height were significantly higher in bed planting than conventional method. In bed planting method, grain yield of rice (48.82q/h) was found to be more than the conventional method (35.74 q/h) during 2012.Varieties PR-118 yielded 47.61q/h more than PR-116 (39.97 q/h) in bed planting. Yield contributing characters like number of effective tillers, number of grains per plant and 1000-grain weight of rice were more in bed planting than conventional method. Harvest index and biological yield was also found to be more in bed planting method than conventional planting. Rice transplanted on 15th June yielded (50.15q/h) more than 30th June (41.45q/h) and 15th July (35.27q/h). Similar results were found in Kharif 2013. Interaction between dates of transplanting and varieties and between varieties and planting methods were found significant.

Marginal land along the coast should be utilized to increase the national rice production. In addition, the use of saline resistant varieties, it is necessary to determine the best seedling age for saline soil. This study aimed to evaluate the growth and yield responses of two rice varieties transplanted at different seedling age on saline soil. The experiment was arranged in a factorial Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with three replications, conducted at saline coastal area of Baros, Yogyakarta, starting from January to June 2017. The first factor was rice varieties, consisting of Dendang and IR-64. Meanwhile, the second factor was the seedling age, consisting of 2 and 4 weeks after sowing (WAS) seedlings. The results showed that the growth and yield of two rice varieties (Dendang and IR-64) showed significant difference, and Dendang showed a better performance than IR-64. The higher yield of Dendang compared to IR-64 was supported by higher plant growth (shoot dry weight) and yield components (number of seeds per panicle, seed weight per plot, and productivity). The 2 and 4 WAS seedlings did not give significantly different effects on nearly all growth variables. However, 2 WAS Dendang rice seedlings had higher shoot dry weight. Meanwhile, IR-64 had higher leaf greenness in 4 WAS seedlings compared to that in 2 WAS seedlings.

Thirteen traditional upland rice varieties (Kadidit Pilit, Red 64, Masipag 9, Masipag 15, Dinorado, Mindoro, Camuros, Masipag 22, Palawan, Suleg, Biday, Pilit , Pilit Talacdan) were evaluated in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) in three replicates at the experimental area of Central Philippines State University (CPSU), Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental from November 2012 - April 2013. The parameters compared were their agronomic data on growth and yield, including grain characteristics. These data were processed using the one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with the Statistical Tool for Agricultural Research (STAR) (Version 2.0.1) while Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) were used to compare significant treatment means at 1% level. The upland rice varieties showed significant variation in growth, yield showed distinct grain characteristics. Biday variety was the tallest, produced longer and wider leaves, and bore the longest panicle. Mindoro and Masipag 22 produced the most number of tillers. Pilit talacdan had the biggest culm, produced the heaviest panicle, with the highest number of filled grains per panicle. Pilit variety gave the heaviest weight of 1,000 grains. The grain features were also found to be distinct in each variety. The yield significantly varied among the upland rice varieties. Pilit and Pilit Talacdan gave the highest yield among the varieties grown at CPSU condition. The performing varieties would be used for upland rice improvement and breeding program and for further verification in the farmer’s field.
