A new compact accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) system dedicated to the measurement of radiocarbon has been commissioned at the Accium BioSciences headquarters in Seattle. The entire facility (including ancillary laboratories for the preparation of graphite targets) has been designed to handle samples with a wide range of 14C concentrations. In this paper, we discuss the technical details of the new facility and present performance test results demonstrating state-of-the-art capabilities. In particular, modern samples can be readily measured with 0.3% precision and accuracy, machine background levels are consistently in the low 10-16 (14C/12C), and chemical background is approximately equivalent to a fraction of modern of 0.004. In addition, when 100-times-modern samples were processed, no increase in background was observed, either during sample processing or during AMS measurement. This corresponds to a dynamic range for 14C analysis of 6 orders of magnitude.

Low-solidity circular cascades, conformally transformed from high-stagger linear cascades of double-circular-arc vanes with solidity 0.69, were used as a part of the diffuser system of a transonic centrifugal compressor. Performance test results were compared with data of the same compressor with a vaneless diffuser. Good compressor performance and a wider flow range as well as a higher pressure ratio and a higher efficiency, superior to those with a vaneless diffuser, where the flow range was limited by choke of the impeller, were demonstrated. The test circular cascade diffusers demonstrated a good pressure recovery over a wide range of flow angles, even when the inflow Mach number to the cascade was over unity.

In this study, the dynamic range and dispersion stability of a shear-type magnetorheological (MR) grease damper were experimentally investigated as important characteristics affecting the performance of semi-active vibration suppression. Furthermore, the damper was applied to the semi-active vibration suppression of a small single-degree-of-freedom model structure subjected to seismic excitation. The performance test results of the damper indicated that it has a dynamic range of 157 times, which is much higher than that of conventional MR dampers. Also, because of the high dispersion stability of MR grease, the results showed that its performance can be kept for 9 days longer in comparison with a similar damper using MR fluid. Moreover, the structural vibration suppression test results demonstrated that the damper can suppress vibration response over a wide frequency range by applying skyhook-based control, which can take full advantage of the damper’s high dynamic range.

Soft tissue surrogate based test dummies are used across industries to simulate real life accidents. To date, there are a wide range of surrogates available in the market, including gels, elastomers, and animal tissues, which are backdated and have mechanical properties very different from actual human tissues. However, in academic research, biofidelic soft tissue surrogates have evolved in the last two decades, but have lacked technology transfer. This book aims to bridge the gap between the industry and academia with the state of the art in soft tissue surrogate research. Surrogates are presented with respect to skin, muscles, brain tissue, arteries, and female pelvis. Fabrication techniques, mechanical testing, and test results required for reproducing these surrogates are discussed. Also, characterization methodologies and limitations of each type of surrogate are presented, for their use in both experimental and computational research. Some major industries which can use these biofidelic surrogates are car manufacturers, prosthetics and orthotics designers, ballistic testing facilities, military and sports equipment manufacturers. Also, hospitals and medical centres can take advantage of these synthetic surrogates over actual tissues for surgical training with minimal biosafety approvals and ethical issues.

Abstract : Pipetting is one of the most important activities in health laboratory analysis. Knowledge of pipetting must be owned by every health laboratory. Students of health analyst as a candidate of health laboratory who will become medical support service unit is expected to be able to do the pipetting precision and accurately. To get a thorough and accurate results then the results of the analysis must be located within a specifc control area and both in precision and accuracy. Precision and accuracy are responsible for analytical interpretation of test results and testing procedures. The method use in this research is the forward method by 61 people research samples which determined by simple random sampling. While the research design used was observational analytics. Based on the results of the research obtained the level of knowledge of respondents research is 71,38; precision pipetting 99,69% and accuracy pipetting 99,58%. From the data that has been obtained then analyzed statistically using tau kendau test. The result indicates that the level of knowledge and precision has a p=0,640 and correlation coeffcient of -0,044 so that the Ho is accepted, meaning there is no relationship between the level of knowledge and precision meaningful. Meanwhile, the level of knowledge and accuracy of the p=0,574 and correlation coeffcient value is -0,053 so that Ho is accepted, it means there is no relationship between the level of knowledge with accuracy. Abstrak: Pemipetan merupakan salah satu kegiatan yang sangat penting dalam analisa laboratorium kesehatan. Pengetahuan pemipetan harus dimiliki oleh setiap tenaga laboratorium kesehatan. Mahasiswa analis kesehatan sebagai calon tenaga laboratorium kesehatan yang akan menjadi unit pelayanan penunjang medis diharapkan mampu melakukan pemipetan dengan teliti dan akurat. Untuk mendapatkan hasil yang teliti dan akurat maka hasil analisa harus terletak di dalam daerah kontrol tertentu dan baik dalam presisi maupun akurasi. Presisi dan akurasi bertanggung jawab terhadap interpretasi analitik hasil pengujian serta prosedur pengujian. Metode yang dilakukan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode forward oleh sampel penelitian sebanyak 61 orang yang ditentukan secara simple random sampling. Sedangkan desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah observasional analitik. Berdasarkan dari hasil penelitian diperoleh nilai tingkat pengetahuan responden penelitian adalah 71,38; presisi pemipetan 99,69% dan akurasi pemipetannya 99,58%. Dari data yang telah didapatkan kemudian dianalisis secara statistik menggunakan uji kendal tau. Untuk tingkat pengetahuan dengan presisi didapatkan hasil nilai p=0,640 dan koefsien korelasi -0,044 sehingga Ho diterima, berarti tidak ada hubungan antara tingkat pengetahuan dan presisi. Untuk tingkat pengetahuan dengan akurasi nilai p=0,574 dan koefsien korelasi adalah -0,053 sehingga Ho diterima, berarti tidak ada hubungan antara tingkat pengetahuan dengan akurasi.

This research is motivated by the low desire of students in writing travel reports. The lack of students' knowledge of the report concept, the lack of students' knowledge of the 5W + 1H report points of good and correct language, the lack of students' knowledge of the spatial, time and topic pattern and not yet reached KKM 75. The method used by the teacher has not been interesting, lecture method. The purpose of this study is to describe the skills of writing travel reports by using Round Club learning model which is viewed from the aspect of understanding the report concept, the use of 5W +1H report points, the spatial, time, and topic pattern.The population of this study is the students of class V Lessons Year 2017/2018 which amounted to 2 classes with the number 80. The sample of research as much as two classes taken by the sample of propotional.Class V.1 as experimental class and class V.2 as control class. The research instrument used is performance test. Provide an assessment by specifying the subject of the 5W + 1H report, as well as the spatial, time and topic pattern. Data were analyzed by 't' test by first testing normality, homogeneity, and hypothesis testing.The results showed that the average control class 68 with more than enough qualifications with standard deviation 16.96. 83 experimental class with good qualification and standard deviation of 15.42 and there is a significant influence on the result of writing skill of class V SDN 01 Nagari Bukik SikumpaSubdistrict, Lima Puluh Kota. This is evidenced by the average value of writing skills in the experiment class higher than the average value in the control class. Normality test results indicate that the two sample classes of  Lo  values in the control class -0.2141 are smaller than the normal 0.190 Lt distributed. Homogeneity test results that the variation of this study is homogeneous at a real level of 0.05, because Ftable 2.16 > Fhitung 1.21 and the results of data analysis then obtained = 2.78 > 1.70 t table, so H0 rejected and H1 accepted. It can be concluded that there is Influence. The background and theory of the offgas analysis procedure used in oxygen transfer testing of diffused aeration tanks is reviewed. Correlation of this method with other applicable procedures in parallel tests is reported. State-of-the-art equipment and accessories are described. Advantages of the procedure are identified, as are precautionary considerations regarding its use. Applications considered appropriate for its employment are delineated. Experience and test results in both Sweden and the U.S.A. on a variety of aeration devices are disclosed.

Background: Pharmacobezoars are specific types of bezoars formed when medicines, such as tablets, suspensions, and/or drug delivery systems, aggregate and may cause death by occluding airways with tenacious material or by eluting drugs resulting in toxic or lethal blood concentrations. Objective: This work aims to fully review the state-of-the-art regarding pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment and other relevant clinical and forensic features of pharmacobezoars. Results: patients of a wide range of ages and in both sexes present with signs and symptoms of intoxications or more commonly gastrointestinal obstructions. The exact mechanisms of pharmacobezoar formation are unknown but is likely multifactorial. The diagnosis and treatment depend on the gastrointestinal segment affected and should be personalized to the medication and the underlying factor. A good and complete history, physical examination, image tests, upper endoscopy and surgery through laparotomy of the lower tract are useful for diagnosis and treatment. Conclusion: Pharmacobezoars are rarely seen in clinical and forensic practice. They are related to controlled or immediate-release formulations, liquid or non-digestible substances, in normal or altered digestive motility/anatomy tract, and in overdoses or therapeutic doses, and should be suspected in the presence of risk factors or patients taking drugs which may form pharmacobezoars.

AbstractFor a wide range of purposes, one faces the challenge to detect light from extremely faint and spatially extended sources. In such cases, detector noises dominate over the photon noise of the source, and quantum detectors in photon counting mode are generally the best option. Here, we combine a statistical model with an in-depth analysis of detector noises and calibration experiments, and we show that visible light can be detected with an electron-multiplying charge-coupled devices (EM-CCD) with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 3 for fluxes less than $$30\,{\text{photon}}\,{\text{s}}^{ - 1} \,{\text{cm}}^{ - 2}$$ 30 photon s - 1 cm - 2 . For green photons, this corresponds to 12 aW $${\text{cm}}^{ - 2}$$ cm - 2 ≈ $$9{ } \times 10^{ - 11}$$ 9 × 10 - 11 lux, i.e. 15 orders of magnitude less than typical daylight. The strong nonlinearity of the SNR with the sampling time leads to a dynamic range of detection of 4 orders of magnitude. To detect possibly varying light fluxes, we operate in conditions of maximal detectivity $${\mathcal{D}}$$ D rather than maximal SNR. Given the quantum efficiency $$QE\left( \lambda \right)$$ Q E λ of the detector, we find $${ \mathcal{D}} = 0.015\,{\text{photon}}^{ - 1} \,{\text{s}}^{1/2} \,{\text{cm}}$$ D = 0.015 photon - 1 s 1 / 2 cm , and a non-negligible sensitivity to blackbody radiation for T > 50 °C. This work should help design highly sensitive luminescence detection methods and develop experiments to explore dynamic phenomena involving ultra-weak luminescence in biology, chemistry, and material sciences.
