After stating the case distinctly, and dwelling emphatically on its importance, as shewn by individual instances in private life, and by the statistics of the world at large, the author proceeded to describe the various methods adopted at present in India, and shewed their incapacity to meet the end proposed, as they merely agitated the air already in a room, or perniciously overloaded it with moisture.

While I was editing this interview with Orhan Pamuk in the Spring 2007, the media exploded with him: “Pamuk Wins the Nobel Prize!” It was not surprising, because for sometime now Orhan Pamuk has been known the world over as the “super hero” of Turkish literature. In Turkey, once again, the media turned its gaze away from Iraq, EU, unemployment, and questions of accountability in government, to contemplate why, how and what Pamuk had won, and the question of who is Orhan Pamuk? As the intensity of the debate increased, I began to wonder if Orhan Pamuk himself would be following it as if it was about somebody else. It certainly did not sound like the dissonance could be about one person, as the public contemplated him, unfolding multiple layers of his political convictions, his nationalism, his character, family, marriage, and private life. As the attention to his work disappeared, he was processed and reproduced by the media, with an effort that surpassed the media frenzy regarding his trial for his statements on genocide. Pamuk the author was replaced by Pamuk the image on the pages of tabloids. A year ago, when I asked if she had read Orhan Pamuk, a young woman in Istanbul had inquired, “Is he somebody?” Oh! Yes!, he is somebody, actually he has become more than that.

Providing an overview of the tumultuous life and stellar accomplishments of silent screen star Barbara La Marr, the Prologue begins with her emergence into newspaper headlines as notorious, teenaged Reatha Watson—-reported kidnapped at sixteen, banished from Los Angeles by juvenile authorities for being “too beautiful” at seventeen, and soon barred by film studios from working as an actress for her scandalous activities—-and ends with her death at twenty-nine. Barbara’s impressive careers as a dancer, in vaudeville, and as a screenwriter are touched upon. Her tremendous impact as a reigning silent screen actress is then spotlighted: how her volatile sex appeal, glamour, talent, meteoric film career, and predilection to live life on her own terms bewitched her peers and the world whilst her explosive private life continued playing out in gossip columns and newspaper headlines.

Epicurus, though popularly and indeed nominally associated with a doctrine advocating the procurement of rather expensive pleasure, lived very simply in his garden with a circle of friends. The 14th of his Sovran Maxims or Cardinal Tenets (kuriai doxai), as collected by Diogenes Laertius, reads: ‘When tolerable security against our fellowmen is attained, then on a basis of power sufficient to afford support and of material prosperity arises in most genuine form the security of a quiet private life withdrawn from the multitude’ R. D. Hicks, the translator, gives, as an alternative to ‘power sufficient to afford support’, ‘power to expel’, but on either reading, we are to think of Epicurus's garden, both the real place and the conceptualized, or tropologized, topos of wisdom and earthly felicity, as enclosed and exclusive. This enclosure, exclusivity, and—what is also implied—abstention of its inmates from participation in the affairs of state are given apophthegmatic expression in ‘Live hidden!’ We contemplate this adage, or slogan, from an enormous cultural distance and, for most of us, ‘Live hidden!’ is much more likely to trigger secondary reflections about the relations between ethics and politics, private and public, perfection of self and improvement of the world, than it is to constitute an actual, or potential, piece of advice we might think about whether, and how, to follow.

The motivation structure, exhaustion level and satisfaction level among the radio journalists are the least researched aspects both in Russian and foreign journalism. This research is based on leading Russian radio stations journalists and managers interviews and is aimed to portrait a modern radio journalist from the perspective of his attitude to the job. The research showed, that, in general, journalists are satisfied with both their work and the relationship with coworkers and the psychological climate in the editorial office. The salary is the most important motivator for all the radio journalists regardless age, interest in the job, career ambitions, fame ambitions and willingness to change the world. This means, that journalists cant be divided into those ones working for money and working for an idea. All the journalists work for money, however, some of them work, in addition, for an idea. The radio journalists feel their workload as high: about half of them feel physically and emotionally exhausted. Many journalists do overtime work: three quarters of them think themes and materials over, more than a half of them prepare materials. The male radio journalists tend to be more romantic and idealistic, the female radio journalists are often more career-oriented, and, therefore, ready to perform more difficult work without a pay rise and they prefer career to private life. Another important trend is the correlation of age and demotivation. The older journalists are less motivated by being interested in their job, an opportunity to build a career, realizing their full potential, becoming famous and changing the world for the better. However, at the same time the older journalists feel the most comfortable in the editorial office and are more often satisfied with their work, combining demotivation with the highest adaptability.

We are all prisoners of the personal way in which we think and relate to those around us. We are so accustomed to our way of seeing the world that we really think it is exactly the way we perceive it. As with military-structured groups, life on board has a number of specific rigor and characteristics, and the commander has the primary task of knowing the challenges of seafarers, taking into account the principles of communication and cultural differences and harmonizing interpersonal relationship, with the ultimate goal of reaching the port of destination with his crew, ship and cargo on time, intact, healthy. Our hyperlinked world and hyper-transparent is no longer a place for private life, for secrets, for hiding. Any event can be instantly posted by Email, Facebook, Twitter or blogs. The problem with technological progress is that connects us too quickly, faster then we succeed in creating the necessary social framework to understand each other. This can sometimes lead naturally to misinformation, but it can also be an insidious tool, used by specialized entities, interested in obtaining a desired atmosphere, information or intrigues.

The koala is both an Australian icon and an animal that has attained ‘flagship’ status around the world. Yet its history tells a different story. While the koala figured prominently in Aboriginal Dreaming and Creation stories, its presence was not recorded in Australia until 15 years after white settlement. Then it would figure as a scientific oddity, despatched to museums in Britain and Europe, a native animal driven increasingly from its habitat by tree felling and human settlement, and a subject of relentless hunting by trappers for its valuable fur. It was not until the late 1920s that slowly emerging protective legislation and the enterprise of private protectors came to its aid. This book surveys the koala’s fascinating history, its evolutionary survival in Australia for over 30 million years, its strikingly adaptive physiognomy, its private life, and the strong cultural impact it has had through its rich fertilisation of Australian literature. The work also focuses on the complex problems of Australia’s national wildlife and conservation policies and the challenges surrounding the environmental, economic and social questions concerning koala management. Koala embraces the story of this famous marsupial in an engaging historical narrative, extensively illustrated from widely sourced pictorial material.

This article deals with a phenomenon that is often spoken about, reported in the media, but about which very little empirical evidence has emerged over the years. Only a handful of criminologists have addressed this phenomenon. This stems from the belief that supernatural phenomena cannot be researched using scientific methods. However, within the phenomenological paradigm, there is room for engaging informants who report their lived experiences. Scientific opinion, as far as social sciences are concerned, confines spirituality to Theology and Anthropology. The notion of the supernatural should otherwise be confined to private life. Against this background, the authors claim that it is rather a general tendency within the scientific community to either consider the spiritual world as a superstition and a phenomenon not to be engaged in. Spirituality should thus be relegated to private discourse. Therefore, the authors endeavour to shed the light on the topic by defining concepts, presenting typologies from the literature, as well as concerning crime and Satanism. The recruitment strategies, as well as the means of control over the followers, are presented, and then specific crimes, abuse, psychological disorders and spiritual possession are discussed. The goal of this paper is to stimulate researchers to tackle this secretive phenomenon and its criminological connections as the perpetration of crime have often been reported where there was the evidence of rituals. Spirituality is the part of life for billions of people in the world and is it worth to be investigated Perhaps it is rather a lack of interest or even fear that leads to the dearth of research in this area.
