The Ti3Al intermetallic compound has long been recognized as potentially useful structural materials. It offers attractive strength to weight and elastic modulus to weight ratios. Recent work has established that the addition of Nb to Ti3Al ductilized this compound. In this work the fundamental problem of this alloy, i.e. order-disorder and antiphase domain structures was investigated at the atomic scale. The Ti3Al+10at%Nb alloys used in this study were treated at 1060°C and then aged at 700°C for 2 hours. The specimens suitable for TEM were prepared by standard jet electrolytic-polishing technique. A JEM-200CX electron microscope with an interpretable resolution of about 0.25 nm was used for HREM.The [100] and [001] projections of the α2 phase were shown in Fig.l.The alloy obtained consist of at least two phases-α2(Ti3Al) and β0 structures. Moreover, a disorder α phase with small volume fraction was also observed. Fig.2 gives [100] and [001] diffraction patterns of the α2 phase. Since lattice parameters of the ordered α2 (a=0.579, c=0.466 nm) and disorder α phase (a0=0.294≈a/2, c0=0.468 nm) are almost the same, their diffraction patterns are difficult to be distinguished when they are overlapped with epitaxial orientation relationships.

A number of investigators have examined moire patterns on precipitate particles in various age-hardening alloys. For example, Phillips has analyzed moire fringes at cobalt precipitates in copper and Von Heimendahl has reported on moire fringes in the system Al-Au. Recently, we have observed moire patterns on impurity precipitates in beryllium quenched in brine from 1000°C and aged at various temperatures in the range of 500-800°C. This heat treatment of beryllium rolled from vacuum cast ingots produces the precipitation of both an fee ternary phase, AlFeBe4, and an hcp binary phase, FeBe11. However, unlike a typical age-hardening alloy, the solute content of this material is low (less than 1000 ppm of Fe and 600 ppm of Al) and hence the total volume fraction of precipitates is small. Therefore there is some difficulty in distinguishing the precipitates and their orientation relationships with the beryllium matrix since the weak precipitate spots generally do not appear on the diffraction patterns.

ABSTRACTWe have investigated characteristic ferroelectric and structural antiphase domain structures in single crystals of hexagonal RMnO3 (R=Y, Ho, Lu, and Yb) by obtaining various electron diffraction patterns, dark-filed images and high-resolution lattice images. In the ferroelectric phase of RMnO3 characteristic domain structures consisting of six ferroelectric and structural antiphase domains, which can be identified as the “cloverleaf” pattern, is found in the (110) plane, in addition to the (001) plane, and are inherent to the ferroelectric phase of hexagonal RMnO3. In domain configuration with the cloverleaf pattern in the (110) plane, the structural antiphase boundaries are inclined to be parallel to the [001] direction.

Recently we have investigated the phase equilibria and antiphase domain structures of Fe-Al alloys containing from 18 to 50 at.% Al by transmission electron microscopy and Mössbauer techniques. This study has revealed that none of the published phase diagrams are correct, although the one proposed by Rimlinger agrees most closely with our results to be published separately. In this paper observations by transmission electron microscopy relating to the nucleation of disorder in Fe-24% Al will be described. Figure 1 shows the structure after heating this alloy to 776.6°C and quenching. The white areas are B2 micro-domains corresponding to regions of disorder which form at the annealing temperature and re-order during the quench. By examining specimens heated in a temperature gradient of 2°C/cm it is possible to determine the effect of temperature on the disordering reaction very precisely. It was found that disorder begins at existing antiphase domain boundaries but that at a slightly higher temperature (1°C) it also occurs by homogeneous nucleation within the domains. A small (∼ .01°C) further increase in temperature caused these micro-domains to completely fill the specimen.

Materials with compositionally modulated structures have gained much attention recently due to potential improvement in electrical, magnetic and mechanical properties. Specifically, Cu-Nb laminate systems have been extensively studied mainly due to the combination of high strength, and superior thermal and electrical conductivity that can be obtained and optimized for the different applications. The effect of layer thickness on the hardness, residual stress and electrical resistivity has been investigated. In general, increases in hardness and electrical resistivity have been observed with decreasing layer thickness. In addition, reduction in structural scale has caused the formation of a metastable structure which exhibits uniquely different properties. In this study, we report the formation of b.c.c. Cu in highly textured Cu/Nb nanolayers. A series of Cu/Nb nanolayered films, with alternating Cu and Nb layers, were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering onto Si {100} wafers. The nominal total thickness of each layered film was 1 μm. The layer thickness was varied between 1 nm and 500 nm with the volume fraction of the two phases kept constant at 50%. The deposition rates and film densities were determined through a combination of profilometry and ion beam analysis techniques. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM) was used to examine the structure, phase and grain size distribution of the as-sputtered films. A JEOL 3000F high resolution TEM was used to characterize the microstructure.

AbstractA nano-laminated Y3Si2C2 ceramic material was successfully synthesized via an in situ reaction between YH2 and SiC using spark plasma sintering technology. A MAX phase-like ternary layered structure of Y3Si2C2 was observed at the atomic-scale by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The lattice parameters calculated from both X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction patterns are in good agreement with the reported theoretical results. The nano-laminated fracture of kink boundaries, delamination, and slipping were observed at the tip of the Vickers indents. The elastic modulus and Vickers hardness of Y3Si2C2 ceramics (with 5.5 wt% Y2O3) sintered at 1500 °C were 156 and 6.4 GPa, respectively. The corresponding values of thermal and electrical conductivity were 13.7 W·m-1·K-1 and 6.3×105 S·m-1, respectively.

The high cost of development and raw materials have been obstacles to the widespread use of titanium alloys. In the present study, the high-throughput experimental method of diffusion couple combined with CALPHAD calculation was used to design and prepare the low-cost and high-strength Ti-Al-Cr system titanium alloy. The results showed that ultra-fine α phase was obtained in Ti-6Al-10.9Cr alloy designed through the pseudo-spinodal mechanism, and it has a high yield strength of 1437 ± 7 MPa. Furthermore, application of the 3D strength model of Ti-6Al-xCr alloy showed that the strength of the alloy depended on the volume fraction and thickness of the α phase. The large number of α/β interfaces produced by ultra-fine α phase greatly improved the strength of the alloy but limited its ductility. Thus, we have demonstrated that the pseudo-spinodal mechanism combined with high-throughput diffusion couple technology and CALPHAD was an efficient method to design low-cost and high-strength titanium alloys.

Abstract In this study, Bioconversion process of glucose to fructose from date syrup using Escherichia coli K12 is modeled using a commercial computational fluids dynamics (CFD) code fluent FLUENT 6.3.23 [8] which we implemented a user-defined functions (UDF) to simulate the interrelationships at play between various phases. A two phases CFD model was developed using an Eulerian – Eulerian approach to calculate the fructose volume fraction produced during time. The bioconversion process was studied as function of three initial concentration of glucose (0.14, 0.242 and 0.463gL–1), three induction time (60, 120 and 180 mn) and three inoculum volume (100, 120 and 150mL). The numerical results are compared with experimental data for bioconversion rate and show good agreement (R2= 0.894). The optimal condition of diffusion was obtained by applying an initial concentration of glucose less than 0.2gL–1 and induction time great than 100 minutes.

Samples of the YBaCuNbO system with different molecular ratios of YBa 2 NbO y to YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−d, were prepared in air by the solid-state reaction method. The X-ray powder diffraction patterns showed that the sample was composed of two phases, one corresponding to the YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−d phase and the other to the YBa 2 NbO y phase with a cubic lattice parameter of 8.425 Å to 8.436 Å depending on the Nb content. The superconducting zero resistivity temperature, T c 0, of the YBaCuNbO system increased with the increase of the molecular ratios, from 91.2 K up to a maximum temperature of 92.8 K, and then, by a further increase in the molecular ratio, the T c 0 was drastically reduced with a gradient of −1.94 K /%x.
