Fostering Career Awareness in Elementary Schools: Evaluation of an Intervention Proposal

AbstractResearch literature has been increasingly focusing on children’s career development, especially when school contexts are considered. In the present study, we evaluate the efficacy of a short-term intervention program designed to foster career awareness in elementary school. The sample consisted of 155 Portuguese fifth- and sixth-grade students, aged nine to fifteen years old (M= 11,SD= 1). With a quasi-experimental design, the sample was divided into two groups, namely, the participants in the program and the controls. We used the Career Awareness Scale for Children and a sociodemographic survey. Analyses of covariance indicated a moderate effect of the participation in the program in students’ career awareness (ηp2= .06,p= .003). The results are discussed considering the school as a key context for career education aiming at promoting students’ adaptability and involvement in the construction of their life pathways.

Abstract: Purpose of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of the use of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach on sixth grade students’ statistical thinking levels. Mooney’s (2002) statistical thinking framework describing four thinking levels across four different statistical thinking processes was used. This study utilized a quasi-experimental pretestposttest design. In the experimental group, the data handling unit was taught using RME approach whereas in the control group lessons were taught traditionally using a mathematics textbook and direct instruction. A statistical thinking test composed of seven open-ended questions was prepared and applied to both groups as pretest and posttest. The change of students’ statistical thinking levels in pretest and posttest were analyzed and compared in both groups as well as between groups. The data analysis showed that the overall growth at Level 4 across statistical thinking processes was higher for the students who were taught using the RME approach than for those taught traditionally.

AbstractTwenty, fifth- and sixth-grade students who reported mild depressive symptomatology were placed into a brief intervention program. The program was conducted over eight, weekly, 90-minute sessions and aimed to teach students depression management strategies and positive coping skills. Significant reductions in symptoms of depression, anxiety and externalising behaviour were found and maintained for six months. The results lend support to the effectiveness of this brief program for early intervention in depression. The potential for the program to prevent the later development of clinical depression and related problems is discussed.

ThepopulationincludedallthesixthgradestudentsofSDITAlHasanahKotaBengkulu in  academic  year  2015/2016,  which  consisted  of  77  students.  The  sampleswere  52 studentsthatwere taken fromtwo classes.Theexperimentalclass receiveda treatmentby usinganimatedcartoonvideoswithbimodalsubtitles, while thecontrolclasswas taught byusinganimatedcartoonvideoswithoutsubtitles.A pre-testwasgiven tobothclasses beforetreatment.Thedata wereanalyzedbyusingSPSS16for t-testformula.Theresults show that, firstly, therewasa statistically significantdifferencebetween thegroups in readingcomprehension scores.Therefore, itwasconcluded thattheuse ofsubtitled animated cartoon videoscould improvestudents’ reading comprehension. Secondly, for reading  comprehension  aspects,  the  experimental  class  and  the  control  class  were different inthe literalperformanceaspect.However,intheinferenceperformance,it showed  no  significant  difference.  Based  on  the  results,  it  wasrecommended  to  use subtitled animatedcartoonvideosastheteaching aidinteachingreadingcomprehension

The study aimed to examine the effectiveness of using the overlapping waves strategy during the teaching of geography lessons in acquiring realistic thinking skills and improving the attitudes towards geography in a sample of sixth grade students in Jordan using the quasi-experimental method. The purposive method was used to select the study sample (n = 64) students, who were randomly assigned either to the experimental group (n = 32), taught geography lessons with the overlapping waves strategy method, or the control group (n = 32), taught  geography lessons with the usual method. The Realistic Thinking Skills Test (RTT) was prepared with its three dimensions, as well as the attitudes towards Geography Scale (AGS). After verifying their validity and validity, the two instruments were applied to the sample as pre post intervention. The results of the statistical analysis indicated that there were statistically significant differences at (α = 0.05) in the post test between the mean of the experimental group and the control group scores on the Realistic Thinking Skills Scale (RTS) and the Attitudes towards Geography Scale (AGS) in favor of the experimental group, indicating the efficiency of using the overlapping waves strategy used in the current study in geography teaching.

The current study aimed at identifying the effect of dramatizing the teaching unit of Beni Abbas Caliphs in 6th grade History of Arabs and Muslims Textbook on improving students' achievement as well as enhancing their social interactional skills. In order to achieve the objectives of the study,three instruments were developed: dramatizing a teaching unit (namely: Beni Abbas Caliphs), a 25-item achievement test, and a social interactional skills scale. All three research instruments were subjected to validity and reality testing. The present study adopted a quasi-experimental design which entailed an experimental group (N = 46) and a control group (N = 44) from DairAlla directory of Education in the academic year 2011/2012. The study reported statistical significant differences in participants' achievement in favor of the experimental group. Significant statistical differences (=0.05) on social interactional sills scale were reported and in favor of the experimental group. The present study recommends thatMinistry of Education need to dramatize history textbooks and to train teachers on using drama in teaching history.

This study aims to provide an understanding of character education based on multicultural values in elementary school students. The method used is quasi-experimental to see the changes that occur after using mobile learning in class VI SDN Kadipaten 1 Majalengka. The population and sample of the study were the sixth-grade students of SDN Kadipaten Majalengka in the 2020/2021 academic year. The data collection technique used a test that was used to determine the student's tolerance attitude. Based on the data processing and analysis results, it can be concluded that the attitude of tolerance needs to be given a good understanding at the level of elementary school students. It is because elementary school students are at a stage where imitation is very high. The "Smart-Ku" M-Learning application can be a facility in providing an understanding of tolerance. It is shown that the results of the study indicate that there are differences in tolerance attitudes before and after using the "Smart-Ku" M-Learning application.

The current study aimed to identify the effectiveness of a program based on the theory of successful intelligence in developing creative reading skills among sixth grade students. To this end, the researcher has used the experimental approach with a quasi-experimental design for the two equivalent experimental and control groups. She has also used the following tools and materials; (1) a list of creative reading skills to be developed, (2) an achievement test to measure the creative reading skills, and (3) teacher's manual. The researcher has also validated the data collection tools and administered them on a random sample of the sixth-grade female students in the schools in Al-Rass governorate (N=60); 30 students for each group. Findings of the study revealed that there were statistically significant differences at the level of (0.05) between the experimental and control groups students' skills in the post -tests scores of creative reading skills for the benefit of the experimental group students who studied using the program based on the theory of the successful intelligence. The results also showed a significant positive impact of the program based on the theory of successful intelligence in developing the creative reading skills of the experimental group students. In light the previous findings, the researcher provided many recommendations and the most major ones were to take care of developing creative reading skills for different stages particularly the elementary stage, to use the program based on the theory of successful intelligence as it was found effective in developing the creative reading skills, and to hold training programs for Arabic language teachers and supervisors to orient them how to best employ the theory of successful intelligence in teaching and clarify its role in developing creative reading skills.

The aim of the present research was to explore the effect of the Common Knowledge Construction Model (CKCM)-oriented education on sixth grade students' views on the Nature of Science (NOS) and to compare it with the existing learning model (5Es learning model). The research was conducted with a total of 76 students (38 by 38--for experimental and control groups) in 2013-2014 school year. Within a quasi-experimental research design, the Views of Nature of Science Questionnaire (VNOS) and the Student Interview on the Nature of Science Aspects (SINOSA) were used for data collection. Quantitative data from the VNOS were exposed to independent t-test while qualitative data from the interview protocol were analyzed using content analysis. Results of pre-test and pre-interview denoted that both groups properly constructed ‘empirical’ aspect of the NOS while the other aspects of the NOS were naïve and transitional levels. After the intervention, it was found that the control group’s views of the NOS, except for the empirical aspect, were transitional level whilst those of the experimental group were informed level. Further, it was elicited that the experimental group performed the highest change in ‘imaginary and creative’ aspect of the NOS. Physics is generally regarded as difficult and uninteresting. The teaching of physics with the use of an appropriate teaching strategy can improve students' achievement. The aim of this research is to examine the effect of the modified Know-Want-Learn (mKWL) strategy on primary school students’ achievement in physics. The Know-Want-Learn (KWL) strategy was modified to be used for students’ inquiry. Quasi experimental research was carried out with 110 sixth-grade students divided into an experimental and a control group. The students in the control group were taught using direct teaching and the students in the experimental group were taught using TQHL charts. These charts consist of columns: T-What I Think and what I know, Q-What Questions I have, H-How can I find out, L-What I Learned. Pre-test and post-test were administered to both groups; two physics knowledge tests were constructed for that purpose. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired samples t-tests and independent samples t-tests. The implication of the research results is that using the mKWL strategy in a sixth-grade physics class has a positive effect on students’ achievement. It can be suggested to implement the described strategy in teaching physics in order to improve students’ achievement in this subject. This pilot study examined the promise of a Tier 2 Grade 6 intervention program for students at-risk for difficulties in mathematics. The study utilized a quasi-experimental design. The final sample included 112 students in treatment (Promoting Algebra Readiness) and 86 students in control (standard district practice) conditions. The Promoting Algebra Readiness program composed 93 lessons across four strands focused on key concepts and applications of fractions. Measures of mathematics achievement were collected at pretest and posttest. Feasibility and usability data indicated favorable impressions by users and strong levels of implementation fidelity. Gain scores of treatment students were significantly greater than control peers on two of four proximal measures of mathematics achievement. Positive nonsignificant effects were found on additional proximal and distal measures. Implications for educators delivering instruction for at-risk students in multitier service delivery models are discussed.
