Indonesian government currently has policies to improve the performance of the tourism sector, including marine tourism. One of the attractions of marine tourism is the coral ecosystem especially through scuba diving activities. The purpose of this study was to determine the suitability of the coral ecosystem on Saebus Island, East Java, to find appropriate locations for scuba diving activities. Purposive samplings were done around the island to determine four stations which will be assessed through suitability analysis. Tourism Suitability Index was used to assess all stations for scuba diving activities. The result showed that all four stations were categorized as very suitable with the score: 85%, 85%, 85% and 83%, respectively. Several aspects that need to be improved and anticipated for diving at all stations are coral coverage and water current. These results suggest that there are several spots around Saebus Island that are suitable for diving site, and can be promoted as marine tourism destination.

Abstract Derawan Island is one of the leading tourist destinations in Kalimantan Timur Province which is a candidate for the new capital city of Indonesia. Marine tourism on Derawan Island relies on the potential of marine resources so that a suitability study is needed for the development of sustainable tourism. This study aims to determine the suitability of marine tourism, especially the interest in diving and snorkeling in sites of Derawan Island. Data collection was carried out by surveying in December 2020 at five snorkeling and six popular dive sites in Derawan Island. Data on coral community, the number of coral fish species, and the water quality parameters are used to analyze the suitability of marine tourism. Line Intercept Transect (LIT) method was used to collecting coral community data, Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method was used to collect data on the abundance of reef fish species, and in situ water quality parameters. Tourism suitability index formula (IKW) using the four classification marine tourism suitability matrix was used to analyze the data. The results of the analysis show the suitability index for diving tourism as a whole is in suitable to very suitable category, while the snorkeling tourism suitability index is in the suitable category.

This study was aimed to evaluate the suitability of Tanjung Benoa waters for dive tourism. The suitability analysis was carried out using Suitability Tourism Index (STI) method. Water visibility, coral reef coverage, lifeform, coral fish, water depth, and water current were used to analyze the suitability rate. The result showed that Tanjung Benoa waters were categorized as appropriate conditional (STI = 40.74 to 42.59). The less appropriate condition at the location might be caused by the high anthropogenic activities in the land.

Shark diving tourism as one of the conservation tools has been growing progressively in the recent decades. Shark diving is among the popular attraction for the marine tourism in Indonesia that plays major role—as rank fourth in the shark tourism world-for the coastal development in the eastern part of Indonesia. Morotai, as well as Derawan, Gorontalo, Biak, Raja Ampat, Nabire and Teluk Cenderawasih, Lombok, Komodo, and Banda Sea, is well known for its shark diving site. Despite its prominent status as a tourism appeal, little is known about the behavior of blacktip reefshark during the interaction with SCUBA diver. The knowledge of shark behavior during interaction with Self- Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) diver is important for developing safer diving practice, ecological assessment, and shark tourism carrying capacity. This research involves DOV (Diver Operated Video) to capture the movement patterns of shark while interacting with SCUBA Diver. Analysis of hundreds of movement displays of the Carcharhinus melanopterus during SCUBA diving shows that this shark is having a specific and consistent movement displays while engaging with SCUBA divers.
