With the theory of “sustainable development” as the theoretical support, the public space landscape of Guilin City is taken as the research object, and from the perspective of landscape architecture, the public space landscape and the non-sustainability issues are deeply analyzed.Guilin city has been deeply investigated and studied.According to various types of public space landscape, five problems are concluded:landscape space problem, landscape energy consumption problem, landscape greening and planting problem, landscape rainwater resources digestion and utilization problem and landscape pollution reduction and noise reduction problem.The smooth solution of these five problems can promote the improvement of the urban environment and create sustainable urban public space.

The current city calls for the reconsideration of a close relationship between gray infrastructure and public spaces, understanding the infrastructure as a set of items, equipment, or services required for the functioning of a country, a City. Ambato, Ecuador, is a current intermediate city, has less than 1% of the urban surface with use of public green spaces, which represents a figure below the 9m2/ hab., recommended by OMS. The aim of this paper was to identify urban public spaces that switches of green infrastructure in the city today, applying a methodology of qualitative studies. With an exploratory descriptive level analysis, in three stages, stage of theoretical foundation product of a review of the existing literature, which is the theoretical support of the relationship gray infrastructure public spaces equal to green infrastructure. Subsequent to this case study, discussed with criteria aimed at green infrastructure and in the public spaces of the study area. Finally, after processing and analysis of the results, we provide conclusions for urban public space as a definition of the green infrastructure of the current city of Latin America; in the latter, the focus is to support this article.

This paper work, based on own findings, discusses the main directions in the field of landscape architecture representing inspirations in the pursuit of sustainable development. Directions in architecture and landscape designing were presented that are aimed at improve ment of the image, ecological conditions of soci al life, and aesthetics of European cities. The article was exemplified with selected design works of contemporary and former landscape and green landscape architects, which have contributed to meet diverse social needs of selected public spaces in Europe. Consistently, the evolution and current state of the problem concerning issues on greenery, parks, squares and urban details will be analysed.

The layout relationship between the public space system and the natural system of cities determines the trend of urban spatial forms. From the perspective of the integration of landscape architecture and urban design discipline, this paper generalizes three restriction/dependence relationship modes between urban public space and natural landscape layout: (1) overlapping mode, (2) separation mode, and (3) the mode of edge combination. Using Zurich, Switzerland, as a case study, this paper quantitatively explores the layout relationship between public space and natural landscape using the location quotient method. The research findings reveal an obvious layer distribution trend of Zurich urban public space and natural factors: the public space and mountain layout have a clear separation relationship. The regressive equation is PQ = −0.188lnMQ + 0.660, forming the mutually supplementary mechanism of the advantageous resources of public activities. The Zurich model shows that when a proper relationship is established among the natural system and the urban public space, human activities, and the public activity centers of the city, the new system provides significant ecological and social benefits. This finding provides an exemplary reference for urban construction in other countries.

The links among public space, landscape, and contemporary art are the central theme of this paper. In shaping a landscape design essay for a public park on a silted waterfront in the city of Ilhéus - BA, Brazil, dynamic alter-natives are introduced for the renovation of the public space, based upon the diversification of common uses. The purpose is to build a connection between landscape and art through the re-signification of the natural and cultural processes of the specific site, which may promote a new collective sense of place. The work presents as its theoretical support studies that look at the landscape from its active aspect and discuss the extended field of contemporary art. This paper explores how design in the public realm can integrate city data to help disseminate the information embedded within it and provide urban opportunities for knowledge exchange. The hypothesis is that such art and design practices in public spaces, as places of knowledge exchange, may enable more sustainable communities and cities through the visualization of data. To achieve this, we developed a methodology to compare various design approaches for integrating three main elements in public-space design projects: city data, specific issues of sustainability, and varying methods for activating the data. To test this methodology, we applied it to a pedogeological project where students were required to render city data visible. We analyze the proposals presented by the young designers to understand their approaches to design, data, and education. We study how they “educate” and “dialogue” with the community about sustainable issues. Specifically, the research attempts to answer the following questions: (1) How can we use data in the design of public spaces as a means for sustainability knowledge exchange in the city? (2) How can community-based design contribute to innovative data collection and dissemination for advancing sustainability in the city? (3) What are the overlaps between the projects’ intended impacts and the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? Our findings suggest that there is a need for such creative practices, as they make information available to the community, using unconventional methods. Furthermore, more research is needed to better understand the short- and long-term outcomes of these works in the public realm.

AbstractSustainable development of container terminals is based on energy efficiency and reduction in CO2 emissions. This study estimated the energy consumption and CO2 emissions in container terminals according to their layouts. Energy consumption was calculated based on utility data as well as fuel and electricity consumptions for each container-handling equipment in the container terminal. CO2 emissions were estimated using movement modality based on the number of movements of and distance travelled by each container-handling equipment. A case study involving two types of container terminal layouts i.e. parallel and perpendicular layouts, was conducted. The contributions of each container-handling equipment to the energy consumption and CO2 emissions were estimated and evaluated using statistical analysis. The results of the case study indicated that on the CO2 emissions in parallel and perpendicular layouts were relatively similar (within the range of 16–19 kg/TEUs). These results indicate that both parallel and perpendicular layouts are suitable for future ports based on sustainable development. The results can also be used for future planning of operating patterns and layout selection in container terminals.

In recent years, cars have steadily colonized the sidewalks in downtown Tbilisi. By driving and parking on sidewalks, vehicles have reshaped public space and placed pedestrian life at risk. A variety of social actors coordinate sidewalk affairs in the city, including the local government, a private company called CT Park, and a fleet of self-appointed st’aianshik’ebi (parking attendants) who direct drivers into parking spots for spare change. Pedestrian activists have challenged the automotive conquest of footpaths in innovative ways, including art installations, social media protests, and the fashioning of ad hoc physical barriers. By safeguarding sidewalks against cars, activists assert ideals for public space that are predicated on sharp boundaries between sidewalk and street, pedestrian and machine, citizen and commodity. Politicians and activists alike connect the sharpness of such boundaries to an imagined Europe. Georgia’s parking culture thus reflects not only local configurations of power among the many interests clamoring for the space of the sidewalk, but also global hierarchies of value that form meaningful distinctions and aspirational horizons in debates over urban public space. Against the dismal frictions of an expanding car system, social actors mobilize the idioms of freedom and shame to reinterpret and repartition the public/private distinction.

El cambio de modelo urbano asumido durante el siglo XX, trajo un sinnúmero de problemas como la priorización del vehículo, por lo que en la última década han surgido esfuerzos para dotar de importancia al ciudadano de a pie, en el espacio público. Esta investigación estudió las condiciones físico-espaciales de un corredor urbano donde el modelo centrado en el vehículo se acentúa, con la fnalidad de generar posibles estrategias que reviertan esta situación. Se tomó como caso de estudio a la Av. 24 de Mayo, en Azogues, y se lo analizó mediante una metodología mixta, que evaluó, detalladamente, tres zonas de estudio, determinando que la falta de accesibilidad y conectividad y el modelo de movilidad defendido por la ciudadanía, en general, infuyen directamente en las condiciones del espacio público peatonal y por ende en la habitabilidad urbana, perjudicando los desplazamientos a pie. AbstractThe change of urban model assumed during the 20th century, brought countless problems such as the prioritization of vehicles, so in the last decade eforts have emerged to give importance to the citizen on foot in the public space. This original research studied the relationship of urban habitability with the physical-spatial conditions of an urban corridor, where the vehicle-centered model is accentuated, to generate possible strategies to reverse this situation. The term ‘cocktail party effect’ derives from acoustics and refers to the possibility to distinguish the voice of a particular speaker amid the noisy confusion produced by a plethora of overlapping voices and conversations. In this article I propose a conceptual elaboration of the term by considering the acoustic phenomenon in question, both literally and metaphorically, as one of the most characteristic conditions shaping contemporary collective and acoustic experience in environments overloaded with information. In the first part, I discuss the conditionsthat give rise to the cocktail party acoustic phenomenon, as they relate to particular types of social, communicative and listening practices. In the second part, I present a case study of the phenomenon based on the creation of a soundscape composition developed in conjunction with a written text, both occasioned by the political activity in the public space of the Syntagma Square in Athens during the summer of 2011.

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this research is to analyze the participation of different stakeholders, resulting from the implementation of the Public Policy Magical Towns, aimed at sustainable development of Villa Tapijulapa. This investigation is currently underway, however it has been observed that it has been funded development projects, through various government institutions that contribute to Magic Towns Program, which has not been successful, in addition there is a misuse system resources. These issues are presented by the complexity of cooperation, multiplicity of participants and perspectives; and the various attitudes and degrees of involvement of the various stakeholders. As the analysis of the social capital of the community and the characteristics of the agency charged with implementing achieve identify areas of opportunity to propose strategies for improvement.RESUMENEl propósito de ésta investigación es analizar la participación de los diferentes actores sociales, derivada de la implementación de la Política Pública de Pueblos Mágicos, dirigida al desarrollo sustentable de Villa Tapijulapa. Esta investigación actualmente se encuentra en proceso, sin embargo se ha podido observar que han sido financiados proyectos de desarrollo, a través de diferentes instituciones gubernamentales que coadyuvan al Programa de Pueblos Mágicos, los cuales no han sido exitosos, además de existir, un mal uso del sistema de recursos naturales. Estas problemáticas se presentan por la complejidad de la cooperación, multiplicidad de participantes y perspectivas; así como las diversas actitudes y grados de compromiso de los diferentes actores sociales. Por lo que el análisis del capital social de la comunidad y de las características de la agencia encargada de la implementación lograrán detectar las áreas de oportunidad para proponer estrategias de mejora.
