This is a qualitative study using an ethnography of communication approach. The purpose is to analyze speech acts of atur pasrah and panampi as a part of Javanese wedding rituals,. Atur pasrah and panampi is a Javanese ritual by which the groom receives the bride’s family after the wedding ceremony, and it is conducted by giving a speech from the groom through a representative of the family. This study was conducted in Mundu, Klaten, Central Java, and the data were obtained by from a video recording of a Javanese wedding ceremony downloaded from a youtube channel. In addition, we also interviewed some competent informants who are commonly involved in such a ceremony. The result of the study shows that there is discourse structure found in atur pasrah and panampi which reflects Javanese culture. Besides, some communicative acts found in the ceremony cover declarative, representative, expressive, directive, and commisive, which are bound to Javanese local wisdom. This needs to be preserved as a way to strengthen harmonious social environmnent.

Minangkabau Randai is one of the traditional arts from West Sumatera, Indonesia that combines four different aspects: silat, theater, music and dancing. The purpose of Randai is to spread moral values of Minangkabau tradition by using a story called kaba. This research discusses the communication patterns used in Randai. Descriptive qualiative method is used in the research and the data collection is done by doing library research. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Randai could not be performed and thus the data are taken from video recording. The title of the Randai performance discussed is Rambun Pamenan and ethnography of communication approach is used to analyze the data by using Hymes’ theory of unit of analysis. The result of the research shows that the communicative event takes place on an open field and there are five communicative events done by the speakers: the opening of Randai, the opening for kaba, dendang, the play for kaba and closing. The communicative acts in the play for kaba are in the form of dialogue, which contain verses and environmental metaphors. The position of women in Minangkabau culture is represented through the environmental metaphors in the dialogue.

This Study aimed to determine the etnography of communication in marriage between Javanese ethnic and Lembaknese ethnic. Informants were determined by using purposive sampling technique with the number of 13 informants. From the research, it could be seen that the communicative situation in Javanese and Lembaknese traditional wedding occurred several times, that is at the time of Lamaran (marriage proposal) in which male family were welcomed by the female family, Akad Nikah (Solemnization), Pijak Telur (eggs stampede) which symbolizes the beginning of family life that could produce a future generation, Sungkeman (kneeling) that is requesting prayers of both parents for the blessing, and Dahar Klimah which symbolizes that the bride and groom will live together in every situation. In addition, other communicative acts can be found from the ceremony is the giving message (advices) from the elders to the bride and groom about living in harmony in the household despite coming from different ethnics.  Keywords: ethnography of communication, traditional wedding ceremony, Javanesse, Lembaknese

The social movement that strongly opposed the construction of cement plant in Sukolilo, Pati, Central Java constitutes a unique social movement. This movement, which is known as protest action, was conducted in a non violent way. One of the ways to embrace people in Sukolilo is by using communication strategy, called as ‘gethok tular’. This is a communication strategy based on local wisdom owned by Samin community. In its growth, gethok tular has formed communication pattern in Samin’s social movement. The communication pattern of gethok tular is in the form of informal communication. This paper was based on the result of constructivist research using ethnography of communication approach. Direct and in-depth interviews were employed to collect data.

<p>Motolobalango traditional procession is a cultural activity that has been hereditary done by people of Gorontalo. In this traditional procession, there is a dialogue between the two spokesmen, from the family of the groom and the bride's family. The procession occurred in a sacred custom event. For some people, this procession is only as a part of the procession which must be passed if the wedding is done by customary, so the traditional procession of meaning is often overlooked. From the traditional procession of motolobalango, the interactions of both spokesmen show discourse that reflects the realities of the knowledge of society of Gorontalo namely the relationship between language and culture. The purpose of this study is to reveal and to explain the philosophical values in the traditional procession of motolobalango and also one way of maintain Gorontalo language from extinction. Motolobalango traditional procession has philosophical values that aims to glorify human being. This research data is qualitative data which is derived from dialog of the spokesman of the family of a man called ‘Lundu dulungo layi'o (LDL) and spokesman of the woman's family called’ Lundu dulungo wolato (LDW). Data were collected through observation and interviews, which are then analyzed through the ethnography of communication that uses units of interaction called Hymes with ‘nested hierarchy’, i.e the speech situation, speech events and speech acts. The values of philosophy in the traditional procession of motolobalango include worship, sincerity, appreciation, and tolerance values.</p>

There are various cultures in Indonesia, one of which is the tradition of sebar punjen in the wedding ceremony. The aim of this research is to find out the communication patterns in the sebar punjen tradition. This study used qualitative research with ethnography of communication approach. In this study, researchers applied data collection techniques using observation, interview, record, and note. The data used in this study consisted of two types, namely primary data and secondary data. This research used Dell Hymes' SPEAKING theory. The results of this study indicate that there is a communicative situation in the tradition of sebar punjen. That tradition is performed at the house of the bride with the last child and is held at night. This communicative event is preceded by an opening which is done by the elders, the parents of their son-in-law, and the grandchildren then form a line. Elders give advice to their children, children-in-law, and grandchildren. After the prayer from the elders is finished, the line goes around uborampe (offerings) in unison. Then the elders spread coins mixed with yellow rice and spices to relatives and neighbors and then scramble to take coins.

This study aimed at and analyzing the types of speech act and the functions of speech act during EFL learning in SMP PGRI 5 Denpasar. The study was designed in the form of descriptive qualitative study which involved an English teacher and eight grade students at SMP PGRI 5 Denpasar. The theory of Searle (1979) was used as the grand theory for analyzing the speech act types and Leech’s (1991) was used for the analyzing the function of the speech act. The data were obtained through observing, recording and note taking. The instrument used in this study were researcher (the main instrument), observation sheet, and video recording (the additional ones). The data were analyzed descriptively. The types of speech acts used in EFL learning were directives, representatives, commisisves, expressives, and declaratives category. In EFL learning mostly created speech acts for the competitive, collaborative, convivial, and conflictive function.

The forms of culture are diverse. One of them is a wedding ceremony. In Minangkabau’s culture, several processes have to be done before the wedding ceremony, and one of them is Batimbang Tando (engagement). This research aims to discuss the communication patterns in the process of Batimbang Tando in Minangkabau’s culture. This research is descriptive qualitative using ethnography of communication approach. The data in this research were obtained from the informants involved in the events. To collect the data, the researchers used non-participant observation by interviewing with note-taking technique. To analyze the data, the researchers used Hymes’s theory of SPEAKING. The result shows that the Batimbang Tando event took place in the boy’s house. In this event, there are several communicative events, such as; Pasambahan, batuka tando, makan bajamba and manantuan ari. In this event, the communication process (pasambahan) uses subtle Minangkabau languages in the form of pantun and talibun. The use of plants like Siriah (betel leaf) and Pinang (areca nut) to symbolize life in Pasambahan indicated that culture and environment could not be separated as they function to preserve harmonious relations between nature and cultural life.

This study aims to describe the meaning of the symbol of the performance in Pencak Silat traditional marriage ceremonies in the people of Desa Tengah Padang, Talang Empat sub-district, Bengkulu Tengah Regency. This research is a qualitative study in which the data collected are in the form of words, pictures, and not numbers. The research was carried out in the Central Village of Padang, Talang Empat sub-district, Bengkulu Tengah Regency. Data collection is carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The instrument in this study is the researcher himself, that is, the researcher plans, conducts the research, and collects data, analyzes, presents data, and draws conclusions. Pencak silat was originally recognized as an embodiment of practical martial arts and performance art. In the Central Village of Padang, Talang Empat Pencak Silat Subdistrict, it was shown as an entertainment when the family wanted to hold a wedding and an official event, the community performed the traditional Pencak Silat art in the event "when the Lembak tribal wedding ceremony took place. The forms of presentation of Pencak Silat include various movements of Pencak Silat themselves over the opening movements of Pencak Silat Art, Offering Dance Movements, Swords, Flavors, Spells and Rabana. The meaning of the symbol consisting of the act of forming implies an attitude of openness that must be possessed by someone.

This research was based on the politeness in speech acts at traditional ceremonies for Tolaki-Mekongga ethnic group as native ethnic in the mainland of Southeast Sulawesi province. In traditional wedding procession, it was known as Tolea-pabitara (spokesman), both Tolea-pabitara represented the family of the bridegroom, and Tolea pabitara represented the woman's family. The competence of politeness in speech act at the traditional procession to the continuity of interaction was crucial and was the responsibility of Tolea-pabitara. The problem in this research was how the use of directive speech acts of Tolea pabitara as politeness strategies in a traditional wedding ceremony of Tolaki-Mekongga ethnic group in Southeast Sulawesi. There were two objectives in this research. The first was to describe strategies of Tolea pabitara in using directive speech acts as a strategy of politeness in a traditional wedding ceremony of Tolaki-Mekongga ethnic that reside in mainland of Southeast Sulawesi. The second was to describe the types of directive speech acts that were used by Tolea pabitara in the traditional wedding ceremony of Tolaki-Mekongga ethnic group in Southeast Sulawesi.

Honorific delivery strategy is an integral part of the Indonesian speech act speech of educated families from Makasar speech community. The strategy has a peculiarity. This study was conducted to get an overview and explanation of the delivery of honorific strategy in the speech act of prohibition delivered by educated families from Makasar speech community. This qualitative study uses the pragmatic theory design with ethnography of communication model. The results of this study indicate that the delivery of honorific prohibition strategy embodied in the speech acts of direct and indirect use of honorific alternatives varies with different contexts according to socio-cultural norm they have.
