Based on the microscopic survey data of 100 vegetable cooperatives in Sichuan Province, this paper empirically analyzes the influence of brand certification on cooperatives participating in the ecommerce by binary logistic regression model. The results show that the proportion of Sichuan vegetable cooperatives participating in the e-commerce is generally lower, which needs further improvement. Brand certification has a positive role in promoting cooperatives to participate in the e-commerce, with a marginal contribution of 19.7%. In addition, government sales support has a positive impact on the cooperative ecommerce, which is an important guarantee for promoting cooperatives to participate in the e-commerce. While the difficulty of agricultural product sales has a negative impact on the cooperative e-commerce, and the more difficult the agricultural products are sold, the higher the probability that the cooperative will participate in the e-commerce. Thus, this article puts forward policy suggestions such as actively promoting cooperatives to participate in brand certification, promoting cooperatives to participate in the e-commerce according to local conditions and strengthening government sales support.

The present study measures the role of firm-specific factors influencing the likelihood of establishing a subsidiary in tax haven countries. The panel data of Indian companies, which have business operations in foreign countries, are used for the study. The firm-level data for the period from 2007 to 2018 are analysed by using binary logistic regression model. The result shows that the intangible assets, long-term debt, number of subsidiaries and service sector dummy have significant and positive impact on tax haven operations of multinational companies, but the experience of the firm and return on equity are insignificant, and a firm’s size deters the likelihood of setting a tax haven subsidiary. The results also show that firms from high-technology manufacturing and knowledge-intensive sector have more influence on the likelihood of owning a tax haven subsidiary by Indian multinationals. Village committees, as grassroots spontaneously formed by rural collective members in China’s hierarchy system, play an irreplaceable role in the management of rural public affairs. Based on the filed survey dataset taken from three pilot counties/districts in Sichuan province, we explored the significant role that village committees played in farmers’ withdrawal from rural homesteads (WRH). Our empirical results, according to binary logistic regression (BLR) modelling, indicated that the WRH was significantly affected by the triple roles of village committees, among which information intermediary was the most effective followed by the trust builder and then the coordinated manager. Firstly, village committees’ involvement facilitated the WRH by improving policy transparency and decreasing information cost. Secondly, the depth of village committees’ participation (i.e., being involved in multiple phases) positively affected the WRH given its signification of the participation of farmers. Whereas the breadth of participation (i.e., considering various demands of different participants) negatively affected the process of WRH by reducing the decision-making efficiency. Thirdly, farmers’ trust in institutions played a positive role in the WRH, but their confidence in village cadres had limited impact. We therefore argue that promising village committees should act as “all-round stewards” in the decision-making of rural households, which not only includes the transmit of information between those above and those below, but also needs to actively strive for farmers’ trust by letting their voice heard. Based on our empirical findings, this paper finally proposed some policy suggestions, such as strengthening mutual communication, empowerment of rural grassroots, encouraging farmers’ participation and improving formal institutions.

Beyond dealing with the negative consequences of the economic crisis, the globalisation of the agricultural products market and the declining of direct payment by the new course that, most probably, will be undertake by the CAP, more attention should be addressed to competitiveness and entrepreneurship by the regional farmers, especially for those farms whose output are products with a low degree of differentiation. For this reason it is unavoidable to promote a structural adjustment of the farms, in order to generate acceptable returns to the factors of production. The analysis is based on a quantitative evaluation by applying an ordered probit statistical model, by which one has indentified the most significant variables influencing the credit-worthiness of the regional farms. The results show the positive impact of the variables connected with liquidity and the negative impact of the land improvements, with the consequence that could be hampered the structural adjustment and the growth of the regional agriculture.

In this article, Amy N. Farley, Matthew N. Gaertner, and Michele S. Moses examine the use of ballot initiatives as a particularly attractive form of direct democracy for opponents of affirmative action in higher education. Building on previous scholarship, the authors question whether anti-affirmative ballot initiatives validly reflect voters’ attitudes toward affirmative action. The authors examine the case of Colorado's Amendment 46, an anti-affirmative action ballot initiative. They investigate the language of the initiative itself, as well as voters’ perceptions of and confusion around its intent, and the factors that influenced voting behavior. They employ item response theory to estimate voters’ attitudes toward affirmative action. The authors then describe the prevalence of voter confusion around the initiative's intent. Finally, employing a binary logistic regression model, they analyze survey data to determine which factors influenced voting behavior. They find that the initiative's language was successful at confusing voters who intended to support affirmative action. Following the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision in Fisher v. University of Texas and in anticipation of its decision in Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, the authors call for greater scrutiny with regard to the use of initiatives to craft education policies that have a disproportionately negative impact on members of disadvantaged populations.

Today, food safety is a common concern in the world. As the main source of food, agricultural products’ safety is also worthy of attention. By establishing the vertical integration model of the agricultural product supply chain, the circulation links of agricultural products can be reduced, and the circulation efficiency and quality level of agricultural products can be improved. This paper assumes that under the condition of simple fresh agricultural products, there is only one wholesaler and one retailer in the agricultural product supply chain. Through the analysis of the economic model, it is concluded that the vertical integration of the agricultural product supply chain has a positive impact on the safety of agricultural products. With the improvement of the vertical integration of the supply agricultural products supply chain, the efforts of wholesalers and suppliers to ensure the safety of agricultural products have been improved, the circulation cost of agricultural products has been reduced, and the sales price of agricultural products has been reduced.

The influence of online public opinion on agricultural product safety on the society is increasing. In order to correctly guide the direction of online public opinion on agricultural products, help the agricultural sector turn from passive to active public opinion, timely prevent the spread of negative public opinion, and reduce the negative impact on public opinion hot events, it is especially important to improve the ability of monitoring agricultural products’ network public opinion. This research is based on big data technology to develop an agricultural products’ network public opinion monitoring system that can collect, process, and analyze data in real time, discover and track hot topics, and calculate and visualize the polarity of public sentiment. The use of big data technology to increase the processing speed aims to strengthen the public’s supervision of the public opinion on the network security of agricultural products and provide an effective basis of the decision-making of relevant departments.

This paper uses the data of 30 provincial regions in mainland China except Tibet from 2006 to 2018 to weighted measure the intensity of environmental regulation through the weight determined by the ranking of pollutant emission intensity year by year; Based on the three subsystems of economy, society and environment, this paper constructs a high-quality development measurement index system, and determines the weight year by year by entropy method, as well as measures the high-quality development level by weight; From the perspective of enterprise production decision, the influence of environmental regulation on high-quality development is theoretically deduced. Through the empirical test of two threshold models with environmental regulation intensity and per capita GDP as the threshold, it confirms each other, and empirically analyzes the impact of environmental regulation intensity on high-quality development level. The research results show that: The impact of environmental regulation intensity on high-quality development level, with the change of enterprises’ decision-making to deal with environmental regulation, has an obvious threshold effect. Before reaching the threshold, the increase of environmental regulation intensity has a negative impact on high-quality development; After reaching the threshold, the impact of the increase of environmental regulation intensity on high-quality development may have a short uncertain stage, followed by a positive impact. Government environmental regulation should be combined with the local stage to avoid the misunderstanding of blindly improving the intensity of environmental regulation; Government environmental regulation should focus on reducing the cost of cleaner production and technological innovation, and accelerate the formation of “forced“ innovation mechanism of environmental regulation, so as to give full play to the positive role of environmental regulation in promoting high-quality and high-development.

BACKGROUND Medical crowdfunding utilizes the internet to raise medical funds. Medical crowdfunding has developed rapidly worldwide; however, most medical crowdfunding projects fail to raise the targeted funds. Therefore, a very important research problem that has not received sufficient attention from the existing literature is identifying which factors affect the success of medical crowdfunding projects. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to examine the effect of textual features of medical crowdfunding projects on their success rate using 4903 real projects from the Tencent Charity platform, a well-known medical crowdfunding platform in China. In particular, according to Aristotle’s theory of persuasion, we divided the project text of medical crowdfunding into the project title and project details, which were analyzed from two perspectives (existence and extent) to explore their respective impacts. METHODS We established a research framework to meet our research goals. The process was divided into five main parts. We first collected data from Tencent Charity using Python programs and cleaned the datasets. Second, we selected variables and built the research model based on previous studies and the theory of persuasion. Next, the selected variables were extracted from the project text. We then performed econometric analysis using multiple regression analysis. Finally, we evaluated the results of econometric analysis to extract knowledge. RESULTS In the project title, the presence of the patient’s disease (<i>P</i>=.04) and occupation (<i>P</i>=.01) had a positive impact on the success rate of fundraising, whereas the presence of age (<i>P</i>&lt;.001), gender (<i>P</i>=.001), and negative emotions (<i>P</i>=.04) had a negative impact. In the project details, the presence of the patient’s occupation (<i>P</i>=.01), monetary evidence (<i>P</i>=.02), and negative emotions (<i>P</i>=.04) played a positive role in the fundraising success rate, whereas the presence of age (<i>P</i>&lt;.001) and positive emotions (<i>P</i>&lt;.001) played a negative role. Moreover, in the project details, high-frequency monetary evidence (<i>P</i>=.02) and negative words (<i>P</i>=.02), as well as a short narrative length (<i>P</i>=.01) were conducive to succeeding in medical crowdfunding. Younger patients were more likely to obtain a higher success rate in medical crowdfunding. For patients whose occupations were national civil servant, professional skill worker, clerk, business and service worker, solider, child, student, and public-spirited person, the success rate of fundraising decreased sequentially. CONCLUSIONS This study collected 4903 valid data from Tencent Charity, and identified which factors in the project text play an important role in the success rate of medical crowdfunding from the perspective of existence and extent. We found that in addition to the project details, the features of the project title also have an important impact on the success rate of fundraising. These findings provide important theoretical and managerial implications for medical crowdfunding.

Under the background of the structural reform on the agricultural supply side and the tightening of environmental protection policies, China’s agricultural industry is facing prominent problems such as low scale, poor mechanization level and serious ecological environment pollution, especially the scattered breeding behavior of small farmers in waterfowl breeding industry and in tobacco growing industry, which has a serious impact on the surrounding ecological environment. In this paper, based on the survey data of 184 waterfowl farmers and tobacco farmers in Jiangxi province and from the perspective of small farmers of waterfowl breeding and tobacco growing, the factors influencing small farmers’ behavior of improving their individual breeding environment and carrying out green ecological behavior are analyzed by using binary logistic regression model. It is concluded that the gender and age of farmers have a negative impact, while farmers’ education level, farmers’ concurrent employment, breeding technology training and government support have a significant positive impact on small farmers’ behavior of improving their individual breeding and planting environment. Finally, some suggestions are put forward, such as optimizing the production layout of waterfowl industry, improve green tobacco cultivation, constructing green ecological development system of waterfowl industry, popularizing green ecological breeding mode and strengthening policy support and supervision, with a view to improve the present situation of poor breeding environment and serious pollution of small farmers in China, promote the development and transformation of waterfowl industry and tobacco industry in China, and promote the sustainable development of ecological environment and ecological economy of waterfowl industry and tobacco industry in China.

Purpose The entrepreneurial capability (EC) environment refers to the general social and economic settings of a given local/regional entrepreneurship environment. The primary purpose of this study is to uncover key indicators of the EC milieu and test these components empirically within the context of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN)-5 economies to elucidate the current state of their EC environments, at the regional and national levels. To this end, the aim of this study is twofold. First, this work endeavors to explicate the determinants of EC, with aims of elucidating its association to commercial opportunities in (ASEAN)-5 economies, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Next, this study applies the developed theory, including the identified determinants of EC to empirically test the efficiency and imperative coefficients of variables that have an impact on perceived entrepreneurial capabilities within a given environment. Design/methodology/approach This research applies two frontier models, namely, the consistent estimation of fixed-effects and linear transformation stochastic frontier models, to assess the coefficients of significant EC variables for the panel sample. Data corresponding to the assessed variables were retrieved from the databases of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) – 2016 and the World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) – 2016, for the period, 2010-2016. Findings The attained results suggest that factors corresponding to the variables “Entrepreneurship as a good career choice” and “perceived opportunities” have played a significantly positive role on the EC environment of ASEAN 05, although findings suggest both factors may still be improved upon. Conversely, the “fear of failure rate” factor was shown to have exerted a negative impact on the efficiency of the EC environment of ASEAN 05. Other important variables – such as intellectual property rights, university education and knowledge transfer rate – were shown to generate a positive impact on the EC environment of these economies. Originality/value This study makes an important contribution to the entrepreneurship literature and can stimulate policymakers to rethink the EC settings of ASEAN-05 in their pursuit of an innovation-driven region.
