The article examines the main features of various forms and methods of organizing the independent work of university students. The opinion is substantiated that independent work, aimed at mastering the acquired knowledge and skills, allows students to fully understand the nature of the work performed and organize their own activities. In the context of the implementation of distance learning in higher education, the goals and functions of independent work of students have been revised, the role of which in the educational process is significantly increasing. In the course of the study to identify the importance of independent work of university students, results were obtained that allow one to draw some conclusions, for example, active independent work is possible only if there are motivating factors: student involvement in research activities, intensive pedagogy, individualization of tasks and the personality of the teacher.

There are few published reports of structured approaches to developing lecturers for new online roles. However, both campus and distance learning institutions can offer some experiences in developing lecturing staff to moderate and teach with low cost text-based online conferencing. This role is known as e-moderating. Staff development is often asserted as a key issue in the success of everything from a project, a course or a whole institution to an online environment. The current climate asserts the importance both for university and college lecturers of adopting a good practice and an understanding of teaching in addition to academic competence. This chapter considers and explores the knowledge and skills that the best e-moderators have and how they can be recruited, trained and developed.

The authors present their review of educational trends under the conditions of distance, online and blended learning. They also examine the Ukrainian educators’ level of knowledge and skills in using modern distance learning tools and trends. For this purpose, the authors have elaborated and implemented a local survey for a Ukrainian university teaching staff (target group) who need to use distance learning tools in their research and professional activity during the quarantine. The authors also present the ways of improving the learning process via distance learning tools.

We propose in this paper an educational distance learning support system to provide learning environment in higher education especially it is very important during Covid-19 pandemic. This system provides the collaboration functions among students, in order to make students more active and interactive in learning process based on web technology without any restriction of time and place, and also in order to decrease teachers’ load. In this system students are endorsed to collaborate each other for constructing shared knowledge as much as possible according to their level of knowledge. Students can make discussions or ask some questions collaboratively to acquire more knowledge which cannot be gained through lessons. We describe the concept of this system including its architecture.

In the context of globalization and integration in the country into the international community, the modernization of foreign language teaching in domestic higher education is taking place. The development of international contacts in the country causes a need for specialists of various profiles who are well-versed in foreign languages, but their training does not always give the desired results. Practice has shown that the grammatical translation method used in the last few decades to teach a foreign language to specialists of various profiles, in which the emphasis is on learning rules and translating texts, rather than on communication, has not fully justified itself. Having generally good grammar knowledge, and skills in the field of translation, graduates of non-linguistic universities have difficulties in communication with foreigners in the course of professional activities, and the question about the level of knowledge of foreign language professionals are increasingly responsible read and translate with a dictionary, which actually means no possession and failure to carry out practical communication in a foreign language.

The risk of COVID-19 in higher education has affected all its degrees and forms of training. To assess the impact of the pandemic on the learning of university students, a new reference framework for educational data processing was proposed. The framework unifies the steps of analysis of COVID-19 effects on the higher education institutions in different countries and periods of the pandemic. It comprises both classical statistical methods and modern intelligent methods: machine learning, multi-criteria decision making and big data with symmetric and asymmetric information. The new framework has been tested to analyse a dataset collected from a university students’ survey, which was conducted during the second wave of COVID-19 at the end of 2020. The main tasks of this research are as follows: (1) evaluate the attitude and the readiness of students in regard to distance learning during the lockdown; (2) clarify the difficulties, the possible changes and the future expectations from distance learning in the next few months; (3) propose recommendations and measures for improving the higher education environment. After data analysis, the conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made for enhancement of the quality of distance learning of university students.
