Abstract Introduction: More than 1.2 million people die each year on the world's roads. Most of these deaths are in low- and middle-income countries where rapid economic growth has been accompanied by increased motorization and road traffic injuries. Prevention of road traffic accidents thus becomes very crucial in order to improve the longevity and the quality of life of the individuals concerned. Objectives: To assess the level of awareness and practice of road safety rules among secondary school students. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among 150 secondary school students aged between 13-17 years studying in selected government and private secondary schools of Achrol, Jaipur district, Rajasthan. The samples were selected through simple random sampling technique. A pre-designed and pre-tested structured multiple choice questionnaire and checklist was used for assessment of awareness and practice of road safety rules. The collected data was analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: With regards to awareness regarding road safety rules, 9(6%) had had poor awareness, 103(68.7%) had average awareness and 38(25.3%) had good awareness. With regards to practice regarding road safety rules, 6(4%) had had unsatisfactory practice, 108(72%) had partially satisfactory practice and 36(24%) had satisfactory practice. Conclusion: Majority of secondary school students had average awareness and partially satisfactory practice regarding road safety rules. Education reminding and strict enforcement of traffic rules can increase awareness and motivate them to strictly adhere to the traffic norms and help to reduce the morbidity and mortality due to road traffic accidents.

Road traffic accidents are increasing in alarming ways. During adolescence period driving for curiosity, careless driving, and peer pressure are most common resulting high road traffic accidents. The main objective of the study was to explore the knowledge and practice of road safety rules and regulations. A descriptive cross sectional study design was used to conduct the study. Non-probability quota sampling technique was used to select 240 respondents from 800 students of class 11 and 12 from Pokhara Secondary School. Self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the information from respondents. The obtained data was entered on SPSS 16 version program and analyzed and interpreted by using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that more than half (59.2%) of the respondents had moderately adequate knowledge. Nearly three-forth (70.4%) of the respondents had average practice as a pedestrian and 75.7 percent of the respondents as a driver had average practice. Only 7.5 percent of the respondents were exposed to road traffic accident and high speed was the main cause of accident. More than three quarter (75.7%) had always driven vehicles without license. There was significant association (p=0.034) between the faculty of respondents (science and management) and level of knowledge of respondents on road safety rules and regulations. The study concluded that there was moderate level of knowledge and average level of practice of both drivers and pedestrians on road safety rules and regulations among secondary school students. It therefore suggests awareness programs on road safety rules and regulations are significant or school students to promote safety.

Road safety is the methods and measures for reducing the risk of person using the road network for being killed or seriously injured. Children are nation’s biggest asset. Every year 1, 40,590 people die due to road traffic accidents. Road safety is the necessity of each human being to protect oneself and other’s life because there is day to day increase the number of the traffic and that leads road traffic accidents. As adults, we are responsible for young children’s safety on roads. With the help of creating awareness among people that can prevent road traffic accidents. The aim of the study is to assess the knowledge of school students regarding road safety. The study adopted a pre - experimental research design to assess the knowledge of students regarding road safety in selected senior secondary school of Amritsar. The sample size was 500 school students. Convenient Sampling technique was used. The tool was two sections, section 1 consists of a self-structured demographic questionnaire and section 2 consists of a self-structured knowledge questionnaire. The result indicates that out of 500 samples, Pre- Test the majority 5.6% had very good knowledge, 17.2% had Good knowledge, 53.8% of sample had Average knowledge, 23.4% had poor knowledge, Post- Test the majority 46.6% had very good knowledge, 45.6% had Good knowledge, 7.8% of sample had Average knowledge, and 0% had poor knowledge.

Background: In India, Road safety is an issue of national concern. Road accidents create negative impact on the economy, public health and the general welfare of the people. Every year the lives of approximately 1.25 million people are cut short as a result of road traffic accidents. Between 20 and 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury. Reliable road traffic injury surveillance is an important component of evidence based road safety policy making. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted for the period of 3 months in Mysuru city. The present study included all the 5 Traffic Police stations coming under Mysuru city. Before conducting the study, permission to collect all the relevant information is obtained from the in charge of the stations. Retrospective data regarding the traffic rules violations, fatal and non-fatal injuries are obtained in the fixed format prescribed by the government which is maintained uniformly by all the police stations. Data collected was entered in MS office excel sheet and analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) software version 22.0. Results: From the study we can observe that there is a drastic increase in the total number of traffic crimes in 2015 compared to 2014. Case fatality of road traffic accident showed decreasing trend from the year 2013. It was evident from the study that there was no significant correlation between total number of accidents every year with violation of traffic rules (r = -0.86 p =0.338). Similarly  There was no significant correlation between the number of persons killed every year with violation of rules by riding two wheeler without helmet(r = -0.380 p =0.752). Conclusions: With massive investment in roads and the exponential growth in the number of vehicles it has become necessary to have a system, which integrates all disciplines that influence road safety. In depth evaluation of the road traffic accidents to build infrastructures and to reinforce the regulations specific to local needs is required.

Background: Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer affecting women worldwide. It comprises 22.9% of invasive cancers in women and 16% of all female cancers.   It affects about 12% of the women population worldwide. In Nigeria, about one breast cancer death is reported in every 25 cases identified and the practice of breast self-examination has been reported to range from 19% to 43.2%. This cross sectional study assessed the knowledge, attitude and practice of breast self-examination (BSE) among female secondary school students in Osogbo Metropolis. Methods: A total of 400 respondents were selected using multistage sampling technique. Data were collected using pre-tested self-administered semi structured questionnaire, analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences and presented using appropriate tables and charts. Level of significance set at < 0.05. Results: The mean age ± SD is 14.77 ± 1.46 years.  390 (97.5%) respondents reported that they have heard of breast cancer while 235 (58.8%) respondents stated that they have heard of breast self-examination (BSE). 15 (3.8%) respondents said the procedures is time wasting while 82 (20.5%) respondents said the procedures were strenuous. 199 (49.8%)  strongly disagree that performing breast self-examination may expose them to breast cancer. Individuals with poor knowledge are one time less likely to do breast self-examination (OR = 1.245, CI = 0.647 - 2.394) while in terms of attitude, those with unfavorable attitude are one time less likely to do breast self-examination (OR = 1.025 CI = 0.949 -1.107). Conclusion: This study revealed a larger proportion of respondents have heard about breast cancer and breast self-examination but with inadequate knowledge of the correct procedures of breast self-examination (BSE) thereby resulting into poor attitude & practice of breast self-examination (BSE). This challenge therefore indicates an urgent need for continuous awareness and sensitization programs in the communities.

Proposals are given for the development of new technologies for the prevention of injuries to children in road traffic accidents, as well as training them in road safety rules and ensuring the safety of pedestrians on the roads around educational institutions.

The research evaluated among secondary school students the time spent in reading and the reading materials preferred. The purpose for which they read was also identified. A cross-sectional survey design was adopted which focused on public secondary schools of Osun State, Southwest, Nigeria. A multistage random sampling technique was used to select 1101 senior secondary school students from 12 public schools covering the 6 educational zones of Osun State. A 20 item Reading Habit Scale was used. The questionnaire was administered with the aid of a research assistant and retrieved immediately from the volunteers after completion. One thousand and seventy-nine copies of the questionnaire were analyzed, 43% of the respondents were boys while 57% were girls. Only 18.6% of the respondents were daily long-time readers (>1 to 6 hours per day) which comprised 17% of the boys and 20% of the girls. Boys more than girls read past questions and solutions while girls more than boys read textbooks and subject teachers note. Boys (98%) more than girls (97%) indicated they read in order to get better grades in tests and examinations. Conversely, girls more than the boys read for a better understanding of topics taught by the teacher and for pleasure (84:76%). A statistically significant gender difference exists with respect to “reading for pleasure” (x=8.92, p=0.003). Most of the students have poor reading habits with respect to daily reading time. Girls were more daily long-time readers and also read for pleasure.

As adolescence is a transitional stage in which a person's physical and psychological development and transformation are limited to the time between puberty and legal adulthood. It is commonly associated with the onset of a variety of mental health or adjustment problems. This study was to find out the incidence of depression and the factors that contribute to it among higher secondary school students. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 adolescents who were selected by simple random sampling technique. The socio-demographic information, Perceived Social Support scale and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) were adopted to collect the data. Descriptive and Inferential statistics was used to analyse the collected data. In this study, 52% of the adolescents did not have depression, whereas 18% had moderate, 8% had moderate to severe depression and 2% of them had severe depression. Nearly 68% of students had a higher social support perception. The type of family and living status of parents had significant relationship with the level of depression among adolescents at p = 0.01. The study concludes that depression and mental distress among these adolescents may be alleviated by boosting their perceived degree of social support and self-esteem through a variety of methods such as family support, counselling at schools and workshops on self – management skills etc.

Background: As per global status report on road safety 2015, 1.25 million road traffic deaths occurred every year. Most common cause of death among those aged 15-29 years was road traffic accidents. The objectives of the study were to study the socio-demographic profile of the victims of road traffic accidents, to identify the risk factors responsible for road traffic accidents and to identify the various presenting injuries of road traffic accident victims.Methods: It was a Hospital based cross sectional study. Victims of road traffic accidents attending casualty during July 2011 – June 2012 were studied. A pretested semi structured questionnaire was administered. A total of 280 road traffic accident victims were interviewed during the study period. Data was entered in Microsoft excel sheet and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. Results were expressed as proportions for different study variables.Results: Out of the 280 victims, majority 206 (73.57%) of study participants were males. The highest numbers of victims (34.20%) were between 21-30 years of age group. 40.71% were using two wheelers. Most of the accidents took place in the evening (6 pm to 12 am) i.e. 39.10%. Most common site of presenting injury was lower limb (40.71%). In this study 22.5% were under influence of alcohol while driving.Conclusions: Road traffic accidents were more in young age groups and in males. Road safety education should be promoted.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess the magnitude and determinants of road traffic accidents (RTAs) in Mekelle city, Northern Ethiopia.MethodsA cross-sectional study was done using a simple random sampling technique.SettingThe study was done in Mekelle city from February to June 2015.ParticipantsThe study was done among drivers settled in Mekelle city.Main outcome measuresThe main outcome measure was occurrence of RTA within 2 years. A binary logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with RTA.ResultsThe magnitude of RTA was found to be 23.17%. According to the drivers’ perceived cause of the accident, 22 (38.60%) of the accident was due to violation of traffic rules and regulations. The majority of the victims were pedestrians, 19 (33.33%). Drivers who were driving a governmental vehicle were 4.16 (adjusted OR (AOR) 4.16; 95% CI 1.48 to 11.70) times more likely to have RTA compared with those who drive private vehicles. Drivers who used alcohol were 2.29 (AOR 2.29; 95% CI 1.08 to 4.85) times more likely to have RTA compared with those drivers who did not consume alcohol.ConclusionMagnitude of reported road traffic accident was high. Violation of traffic laws, lack of vehicle maintenance and lack of general safety awareness on pedestrians were the dominant reported causes of RTAs. Driving a governmental vehicle and alcohol consumption were the factors associated with RTA. Monitoring blood alcohol level of drivers and regular awareness to the drivers should be in place. Holistic study should be done to identify the causes of RTAs.
