This article presents the evaluation of force effects on squeeze film damper rotor. The rotor is placed eccentrically and its motion is translate-circular. The amplitude of rotor motion is smaller than its initial eccentricity. The force effects are calculated from pressure and viscous forces which were measured by using computational modeling. Damper was filled with magnetorheological fluid. Viscosity of this non-Newtonian fluid is given using Bingham rheology model. Yield stress is not constant and it is a function of magnetic induction which is described by many variables. The most important variables of magnetic induction are electric current and gap width between rotor and stator. The simulations were made in finite volume method based solver. The motion of the inner ring of squeeze film damper was carried out by dynamic mesh. Numerical solution was solved for five different initial eccentricities and angular velocities of rotor motion.

Modern dentistry commonly uses a variety of imaging methods to support diagnosis and treatment. Among them, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is particularly useful in presenting head structures, such as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The determination of the morphology of the joint is an important part of the diagnosis as well as the monitoring of the treatment results. It can be accomplished by measurement of the TMJ gap width at three selected places, taken at a specific cross-section. This study presents a new approach to these measurements. First, the CBCT images are denoised using curvilinear methods, and the volume of interest is determined. Then, the orientation of the vertical cross-section plane is computed based on segmented axial sections of the TMJ head. Finally, the cross-section plane is used to determine the standardized locations, at which the width of the gap between condyle and fossa is measured. The elaborated method was tested on selected TMJ CBCT scans with satisfactory results. The proposed solution lays the basis for the development of an autonomous method of TMJ index identification.

Purpose: We aim to provide a systematic methodology for the optimal design of MRD for improved damping capacity and dynamical adjustability in performing its damping function. Methods: A modified Bingham model is employed to model and simulate the MRD considering the MR fluid’s compressibility. The parameters that describe the structure of MRD and the property of the fluid are systematically examined for their contributions to the damping capacity and dynamically adjustability. A response surface method is employed to optimize the damping force and dynamically adjustable coefficient for a more practical setting related to the parameters. Results: The simulation system effectively shows the hysteretic characteristics of MRDs and shows our common sense understanding that the damping gap width and yoke diameter have significant effects on the damping characteristics of MRD. By taking a typical MRD device setup, optimal design shows an increase of the damping force by 33% and an increase of the dynamically adjustable coefficient by 17%. It is also shown that the methodology is applicable to other types of MDR devices. Conclusion: The compressibility of MR fluid is one of the main reasons for the hysteretic characteristics of MRD. The proposed simulation and optimization methods can effectively improve the MRD’s damping performance in the design stage.

A metallic nano-trench is a unique optical structure capable of ultrasensitive detection of molecules, active modulation as well as potential electrochemical applications. Recently, wet-etching the dielectrics of metal–insulator–metal structures has emerged as a reliable method of creating optically active metallic nano-trenches with a gap width of 10 nm or less, opening a new venue for studying the dynamics of nanoconfined molecules. Yet, the high surface tension of water in the process of drying leaves the nano-trenches vulnerable to collapsing, limiting the achievable width to no less than 5 nm. In this work, we overcome the technical limit and realize metallic nano-trenches with widths as small as 1.5 nm. The critical point drying technique significantly alleviates the stress applied to the gap in the drying process, keeping the ultra-narrow gap from collapsing. Terahertz spectroscopy of the trenches clearly reveals the signature of successful wet etching of the dielectrics without apparent damage to the gap. We expect that our work will enable various optical and electrochemical studies at a few-molecules-thick level.

Aiming at solving the NVH problem in vehicles, a novel composite structure is proposed. The new structure uses a hollow-stub phononic-crystal with filled cylinders (HPFC) plate. Any unit in the plate consists of a lead head, a silicon rubber body, an aluminum base as outer column and an opposite arranged inner pole. The dispersion curves are investigated by numerical simulations and the influences of structural parameters are discussed, including traditional hollow radius, thickness, height ratio, and the new proposed filling ratio. Three new arrays are created and their spectrum maps are calculated. In the dispersion simulation results, new branches are observed. The new branches would move towards lower frequency zone and the band gap width enlarges as the filling ratio decreases. The transmission spectrum results show that the new design can realize three different multiplexing arrays for waveguides and also extend the locally resonant sonic band gap. In summary, the proposed HPFC structure could meet the requirement for noise guiding and filtering. Compared to a traditional phononic crystal plate, this new composite structure may be more suitable for noise reduction in rail or road vehicles.

AbstractA large negative resistance is observed in the I-V characteristics of gold nanogap junction when high-bias voltages are applied. This phenomenon is characteristic behaviour on the nanometre scale; it only occurs for gap widths slightly under 13 nm. Furthermore, this junction exhibits a non-volatile resistance hysteresis when the bias voltage is reduced very rapidly from a high level to around 0 V, and when the bias voltage is reduced slowly. This non-volatile resistance change occurs as a result of changes in the gap width between the metal electrodes, brought about by the applied bias voltage.

Partial and complete emission band reversals have been observed in the infrared emission spectra from portions of operating sliding contacts. An elementary analysis has been carried out to show that partial reversals are due to temperature gradients in the fluid film—the film acts both as a radiation-emitter and absorber, and that total reversals—an emission spectrum appears as an absorption spectrum—are likely to be due to a continuum source, such as hot solid asperities. The total energy radiated under the latter conditions exceeds that under the others. A decrease in gap width with increased load was accompanied by a dramatic spectral change in the case of 5P4E polyphenyl ether, which is indicative of molecular alignment.
