Drought resistance in spring wheat cultivars. II.* Effects on plant water relations

We studied cultivar and drought effects on the water relations of a large set of cultivars of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), durum wheat (T. turgidum), triticale (X Tritosecale Wittmack) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), grown in field plots in north-western Mexico in the presence and absence of simulated late drought. Leaf water potential (Ψ) and osmotic potential (π), and leaf permeability (LP) to viscous air flow were measured between 1000 and 1600 hours on many dates; leaf turgor potential (p) was calculated. Drought caused associated reductions in Ψ, π and LP. Cultivar effects on these variables were usually significant on given dates, and reasonably consistent between dates and drought intensities in the case of Ψ, but less so for π and LP. There were consistent positive phenotypic correlations between Ψ and LP, and Ψ and anthesis date, and a negative correlation between Ψ and stature in the absence of drought. The relationship of LP to Ψ for different cultivars differed significantly: in particular, tall bread wheats had lower LP than dwarf cultivars at high values of Ψ, whereas at low Ψ they had higher LP than the dwarf cultivars. There was general osmotic adjustment, and a tendency for the relationship of p to Ψ to vary between cultivars. Irrespective of statistical significance, the effects of cultivar were generally small relative to those of drought intensity.

Lactate is a product of anaerobic glycolysis, used in animal research as an indicator of muscle fatigue. Therefore, it has been used as an indicator of cattle response to long distance transportation. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship of L-lactate concentrations measured using a Lactate Scout+ analyzer and a traditional lactate assay colorimetric kit. Blood samples were collected by venipuncture from 96 steers (Black or Red Angus × Hereford/Simmental and Black or Red Angus × Charolais; 247 ± 38.2 kg BW) prior to loading (LO1) and after 36 h of transport, and prior to reloading and after an additional 4 h of road transportation, and on d 1, 2, 3, 5, 14, and 28 after transport. The Lactate Scout+ analyzer strip was dipped in blood at the time of sampling, while blood samples were collected into sodium fluoride tubes for use in the colorimetric analysis. Pearson correlations were calculated to assess the strength of the relationship between the experimental methods for the quantification of L-lactate concentrations. The magnitude and direction of the correlation, and the level of statistical significance varied over the observed time points, ranging from r = −0.03 (p = 0.75; LO1) to r = 0.75 (p < 0.0001; d 3). The correlation for the pooled data was weak but statistically significant (r = 0.33, p < 0.0001). Based on the low magnitude of the correlation due to variability across sampling time points in this study, the Lactate Scout+ analyzer is not a suitable alternative to a lab-based assay (considered the gold standard) for measuring L-lactate in transported cattle.

Abstract Blood metabolites are used to assess a variety of animal conditions for veterinary diagnosis and research. Concentration of metabolites in blood can be measured using a commercially-available lab-based assay or in real-time using a handheld device developed to be more time- and cost-effective than the lab-based method. Crop rotations involving perennial alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) present the unique problem of terminating the alfalfa stand. Intensive tillage currently used to terminate alfalfa increases the risk of soil erosion and reduces many of the rotational benefits from alfalfa. Inadequate alfalfa termination results in severe competition to the following crop by surviving alfalfa plants. Field experiments were conducted in Manitoba between 1991 and 1993 with the following objectives: 1) to investigate no-till vs. tillage management systems for successful alfalfa termination, 2) to compare fall vs. spring alfalfa termination, 3) to compare the performance of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seeded into alfalfa residue, and 4) to determine the relationship between alfalfa escapes and grain yield. Fall termination produced higher grain yields than spring termination, however this advantage was only achieved with the better termination treatments capable of lowering alfalfa regrowth below a critical level. The best herbicide treatment tested here was glyphosate at 1.78 kg a.i. ha−1. Successful treatments would have to reduce residual alfalfa basal crown area (a measure of alfalfa regrowth potential) after cereal grain harvest to below 2%. Alfalfa escapes reduced yield of following wheat and barley crops similarly (P > 0.05). When alfalfa termination treatment method allowed some regrowth, in-crop herbicide treatments significantly reduced alfalfa basal crown area. Results of this study indicate that it is feasible to terminate alfalfa with herbicides in the absence of tillage, however an overall cropping strategy, including adequate consideration of weeds present in alfalfa fields at time of termination, must be considered. Eight six-rowed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) lines were used to study the relationship of whole-plant dry matter yield (WPY), whole-plant digestible yield (WPDY) and percent in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVDOM) with plant height, maturity, grain and leaf content at the time of maximum WPY. The study was conducted at Lacombe, Alberta during 1983 and 1984. Whole-plant harvests were initiated at the 50% heading stage of individual lines and continued for seven consecutive weeks. WPY and WPDY attained maximum levels at identical harvest times after heading in all lines and years. In 1983 all lines, and in 1984, six of eight lines attained maximum WPY at the same time postheading (fourth and third harvest in 1983 and 1984, respectively). WPY and WPDY were significantly correlated with days from planting to time of maximum yield (TMY) in both years. Partial coefficients of determination from stepwise multiple regression analyses indicated that the effect of days from planting until TMY > plant height > days to heading on WPY. The effect of days from planting until TMY > plant height > IVDOM > days to heading on WPDY, and the effect leaf content was more important than any other variable on IVDOM. It was concluded that late-maturing, tall barley lines having a high leaf content were most likely to produce high WPDY and hence be advantageous for utilization as whole-plant barley forage.Key words: Barley, whole-plant, digestibility, maturity, height

Background: The occurrence of serious problems in children's mental development, that children will become aggressive, lack of social interaction and deteriorating of communication skills, is affected by the introduction of gadgets too early and the intensity of uncontrolled use of gadgets by parents. Aim of this study is to determine the relationship between pragmatic ability and social interaction with the intensity of using gadgets in kindergarten children in Surakarta.  Methods: This research was conducted in the kindergarden TK ABA Thoyibah Surakarta, TK Sri Juwita Hanum Surakarta dan TK Negeri Pembina city of Surakarta in april until august 2020. Sample conduct using total sampling technique. Amount of sample is 115 students of kindergarden. The relationship of the variables studied, both pragmatic ability and social interaction with the intensity of using gadgets, is an Odds Ratio (OR), which is exponential from b, the statistical significance of the Odds Ratio is tested with mannova.  Results: The results of the analysis of the pragmatic ability variable showed that Exp B: 2,916, p: 0,420. The results of the social interaction variable analysis showed that Exp B: 2,977, p: 0.011.  Conclusion: Pragmatic ability and social intensity are jointly related to the intensity of using gadgest in kindergarten students in Surakarta, with the results of the analysis of the variable pragmatic ability Exp B: 2,916, p: 0,420 and the results of the analysis of social interaction variables Exp B: 2,977, p: 0.011.

BACKGROUND The police attend numerous domestic violence events each year, recording details of these events as both structured (coded) data and unstructured free-text narratives. Abuse types (including physical, psychological, emotional, and financial) conducted by persons of interest (POIs) along with any injuries sustained by victims are typically recorded in long descriptive narratives. OBJECTIVE We aimed to determine if an automated text mining method could identify abuse types and any injuries sustained by domestic violence victims in narratives contained in a large police dataset from the New South Wales Police Force. METHODS We used a training set of 200 recorded domestic violence events to design a knowledge-driven approach based on syntactical patterns in the text and then applied this approach to a large set of police reports. RESULTS Testing our approach on an evaluation set of 100 domestic violence events provided precision values of 90.2% and 85.0% for abuse type and victim injuries, respectively. In a set of 492,393 domestic violence reports, we found 71.32% (351,178) of events with mentions of the abuse type(s) and more than one-third (177,117 events; 35.97%) contained victim injuries. “Emotional/verbal abuse” (33.46%; 117,488) was the most common abuse type, followed by “punching” (86,322 events; 24.58%) and “property damage” (22.27%; 78,203 events). “Bruising” was the most common form of injury sustained (51,455 events; 29.03%), with “cut/abrasion” (28.93%; 51,284 events) and “red marks/signs” (23.71%; 42,038 events) ranking second and third, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that text mining can automatically extract information from police-recorded domestic violence events that can support further public health research into domestic violence, such as examining the relationship of abuse types with victim injuries and of gender and abuse types with risk escalation for victims of domestic violence. Potential also exists for this extracted information to be linked to information on the mental health status.

This paper focuses on the relationship between two genotypes of durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.): Gamgoum Rekham (GGR) and Haurani; two genotypes of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.): Florence aurore 8193 (FA) and Mexipak; and two genotypes of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.): Manel and Saïda 183. These genotypes were subjected to a water deficit during a period of twenty days at the heading stage. The proline content and the chlorophyll content are determined on the standard leaves both on the control and on the sample subjected to water stress after twenty days and after one and two weeks, following the return of watering. Despite the fact that these varieties are cultivated under the same conditions on the Algerian highlands, their reactions to the test conditions are very different. As a matter of fact, GGR and FA recorded very high levels of proline at the end of the stress. This, however, was at the moment when the two barley genotypes presented relatively low values for the two studied parameters. After the return of watering, the proline contents at the various genotypes returned gradually to those of the controls. The GGR genotype recovers more quickly than the others. As for the chlorophyll content, it evolves, unevenly, in the course of the test, showing no evolutionary indication in relation to the proline.

AbstractThe statistical relationships of total COVID-19 Cases and Deaths per million populations in 45 countries, where 85.8% of the world’s population lives with 10 demographic, economic and social indicators were studied. Data for 28 May 2020 were used in the main calculations. The relationship of Deaths per million population and total Cases per million population is very close and reaches correlation coefficient R = 0.926. It is interesting that the close correlations were found of Cases and Deaths per 1 million with a purely economic index like GDP PPP per capita, where R = 0.687 and R = 0.660, respectively. Even more close correlations were found of Cases and Deaths per 1 million with a composite index HDI, where the correlation coefficients reach 0.724 and 0.680, respectively. The main reason for these paradoxical results is the underestimation of pandemic restrictions in the form of masks, social distance and disinfection in most of these countries. Other indicators (excluding Gini index and Population Density) also show statistically significant correlations with Cases and Deaths per 1 million with correlation coefficients from 0.432 to 0.634. The statistical significance of the found correlations determined using Student’s t-test was p <0.0001. Surprisingly, there was no statistically significant correlation between Cases and Deaths with Population Density. To check whether there is a change in the correlations with the development of the pandemic, a statistical analysis was made for four different dates – 9 April, 28 May, 7 August and 30 November 2020. It was found that the correlation coefficients of COVID-19 cases and Deaths with the rest indicators decrease during the pandemic.

The purpose of this research was to study the relationship between spike nodding angle and kernel brightness under simulated rainfall in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Five genotypes, selected for differences in kernel brightness and spike nodding angle in the field, were grown in the greenhouse. At approximately 10 days after heading, spike nodding angles of 0, 60, 120, and 180° from a completely upright position were established for each genotype. Spikes were sprinkled with water three times daily until they were ripe. After harvest, kernel brightness and yellowness were measured with a Hunter Color Difference Meter (HCDM). Kernels from spikes nodded at angles of 120 and 180° were significantly brighter than kernels from spikes nodded at angles of 0 and 60°, but there were no significant differences among the four angles for degree of yellowness. A nonsignificant genotype × spike nodding angle interaction for kernel brightness indicated that the barley genotypes responded similarly to nodding angle treatments regardless of their natural kernel brightness. Results of this research indicate that the spike nodding angle should be greater than 90° from vertical in order to contribute to kernel brightness in moist conditions. It is suggested that the barley breeder consider both natural kernel brightness and spike nodding angle as selection criteria for developing varieties with improved kernel brightness.

AbstractThere have been long questions about the relationship of schizophrenia to other mental disorders. Lifetime DSM-III-R diagnoses of mood and anxiety disorders in twins with clinically diagnosed schizophrenia (n = 24) and their non-affected co-twins (n = 24) were compared with twins from pairs without schizophrenia (n = 3327) using a sample from the Vietnam Era Twin Registry. Schizophrenic probands had significantly elevated rates of all included disorders (bipolar disorder, major depression, dysthymia, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and PTSD) compared with controls (P < 0.01). The odd ratios comparing co-twins of schizophrenic probands with controls was greater than three for every disorder, but did not attain statistical significance. A similar pattern was observed when analyses were restricted to only monozygotic twins (n = 12). Consistent with other studies, schizophrenics appeared to have higher rates of a range of mental disorders. Our results suggest that schizophrenia per se represents a risk factor for other psychiatric disorders, but the absence of significantly elevated risk among non-schizophrenic co-twins suggested that family environmental and/or genetic factors that contribute to risk of schizophrenia do not increase the risk of mood and anxiety disorders to the same extent that the risk of these other disorders is increased by the presence of schizophrenia.
