Differences in mineral concentration among diploid and tetraploid cultivars of rhodesgrass (Chloris gayana)

Mineral composition of a range of rhodesgrass cultivars was measured to assess if levels were suitable for cattle growth. Leafy regrowth of 11 rhodesgrass cultivars and lines was analysed for a range of elements in 2 replicated field experiments near Gympie in southern Queensland. Experiment 1 comprised 2 diploid and 2 tetraploid cultivars, while 7 diploids and 3 tetraploids were compared in experiment 2.Overall, the tetraploids had higher nitrogen (N), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) concentrations but lower sodium (Na) and boron (B) concentrations than the diploids. Concentrations of potassium (P), copper (Cu) and aluminium (Al) for the 2 groups were similar and showed no significant cultivar differences. Results for sulfur (S), zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) varied between experiments, either with no significant ploidy and cultivar differences or with higher concentrations in the tetraploids (S in experiment 2, Zn in experiment 1). The tetraploids had significantly higher concentrations of Mn in experiment 2. The Na concentration found in cultivar Boma was lower (0.02%) than the other cultivars in experiment 2. Similarly, cultivar Samford in experiment 1 had a lower Na concentration than the other 3 cultivars. Both Boma and Samford, however, had the highest Mg concentrations in their respective experiments. K/(Ca+ Mg) equivalent ratios in the 2 experiments were in the range 0.40-1.50. This is well below the accepted critical value of 2.2 above which grass tetany in ruminants could become a problem.

The beneficial effects of legumes grown in rotation with cereal crops can, in part, be attributed to soil N increments through the fixation of atmospheric N2 and conservation of soil N. Other rotation effects have been suspected, but have not all been characterized. The objectives of the present study were to determine the impact of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) and soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) on the mineral composition and uptake of a subsequent forage-corn (Zea mays L.) crop. Field experiments were conducted in 1987 and 1988 on a Rivière-du-Loup gravelly sandy loam (Ferro Humic Podzol) at St-Anselme and on a Chaloupe silty loam (Orthic Humic Gleysol) at Deschambault in eastern Quebec. In continuous cropping or following soybean Maple Amber or faba bean Outlook, N rates applied to corn Pioneer 3979 were 0, 50, 100 or 150 kg N ha−1. In 1987, generally, the corn mineral composition and uptake were not significantly affected by N treatments. Soil mineral concentrations were measured in spring 1988 at both sites, but only a few differences were observed among treatments. In 1988, at St-Anselme, the K concentration of stover and whole plants increased following legumes at all N levels applied, but decreased at Deschambault as the N level increased up to 100 kg N ha−1 for all previous crops. At St-Anselme, the Ca uptake of the corn stover following faba bean was higher than that following corn. At the same location, the K uptake by stover was higher following legumes than following corn. The Mg uptake by subsequent corn at St-Anselme was higher following faba bean than following corn and soybean, while at Deschambault, it generally increased with N application following all previous crops. At both sites, the stover and the whole-plant P uptake varied with N application that also affected Fe and Mn concentrations and uptake. This chapter discusses the notion of action-minimizing orbits. In particular, it defines the other two families of invariant sets, the so-called Aubry and Mañé sets. It explains their main dynamical and symplectic properties, comparing them with the results obtained in the preceding chapter for the Mather sets. The relation between these new invariant sets and the Mather sets is described. As a by-product, the chapter introduces the Mañé's potential, Peierls' barrier, and Mañé's critical value. It discusses their properties thoroughly. In particular, it highlights how this critical value is related to the minimal average action and describes these new concepts in the case of the simple pendulum.

The goal of fertilization is to meet the nutritional needs of plants by completing the supply of soil nutrients in an economically profitable and environmentally friendly. Achieving on-farm optimum economic crop yields of marketable quality with minimum adverse environmental impact requires close attention to fertilization guide. The recommendations seek to do this by ensuring that the available supply of plant nutrients in soil is judiciously supplemented by additions of nutrients in fertilizers. The objective is that crops must have an adequate supply of nutrients, and many crops show large and very profitable increases in yield from the correct use of fertilizers to supply nutrients. The main objective of this work is to establishing a reference guide of fertilization of vegetable crops and cereal in Algeria. To meet this objective, we have processes in two steps: 1) Establishment of theoretical fertilizer recommendation from international guide of crop fertilization; 2) Validation of these developed theoretical fertilizer recommendation by trials in the fields. Sixteen fertilization guides of vegetable crops from the Canadian provinces (5 guides), USA (10 guides) and countries of northern Europe England (1 guide). Generally, the rating of these recommendation is ranging from poor soil to soil exceedingly rich; however, the numbers of fertility classes are very different. Indeed, Quebec Ontario, Minnesota, Wisconsin New England, Maryland and Kentucky and Florida guides are subdivided into 5 fertility classes, ranging from poor soil to soil exceedingly rich. The recommendation of New Brunswick and Manitoba contain six classes. The recommendation of Michigan, Nova Scotia and England contain 10 and 7 fertility classes respectively. The recommendation fertilizer of New York and New Jersey have 3classes. Unlike the systems of fertilization recommendation mentioned above, the recommendation fertilizer of Pennsylvania is based on continuous models of P, K and contains 34 classes for P and 22 classes K. Then we standardized the P soil analysis with conversion equations (Olsen method) and units of measurement (kg/ha, mg/kg…).Following this procedure we transformed discontinued systems of fertility classes in to continuous models to facilitate comparison between the different fertilization recommendation models in one hand, in other hand to obtain critical value (CV).Finally, we used statistics of the conditional expectation in order to generate the theoretical recommendation fertilization guide of fertilization with 7 fertility classes (VL, L, M, MH, OP, H and VH). The next step was calibrating soil tests against yield responses to applied nutrient in field experiments. A database (not published data) from agriculture and agri-food Canada, were used. Production of pumpkin responded positively and significantly to P or K soil fertility levels, increases being observed with P more often than with K. According to the Cate-Nelson methods, the critical value of Olsen-P in the top 20 cm of soil was about 25 mg/kg: at values of greater than or equal to 25 mg/kg, crops achieved about 80% of their maximal yield in the absence of fertilizer application. The CV of K in soil for this crop was about 140 mg/kg. The CV found was very close to this generated by the theoretical method for recommendation of fertilization guide. Finally, we used the procedure of Cope and Rouse in both sides of the CV in order to make subdivisions of different groups of soil fertility. One calibrates the soil-test value against yield response to tile nutrient to predict fertilizer requirement.

Between 1942 and 1950, some thirty field experiments have been carried out in the southern half of England to assess the potential value, either for grain or forage production, of seventeen openpollinated flint or dent maizes together with twentynine single or double hybrids of American or Canadian origin.Early-maturing flint varieties will consistently ripen grain, but before mechanical threshing or storage, the cobs require drying. Sibthorp, a mass selection made from an unknown German variety, is the earliest and most productive flint maize so far tested, and in the experiments has yielded as much as 39 cwt. of grain per acre with an average of 24 cwt. The earliest American hybrids, i.e. those with a U.S.A. rating of 80 days from sowing to maturity, give very high yields of grain in favourable seasons. Within the group Wisconsin 240–275, a yield level equal to or exceeding 50 cwt./acre has on occasion been recorded. On the other hand, in the most unfavourable years, such hybrids just failed to produce ripe cobs.Attempts to maintain sixty-five parent inlines of the earliest hybrids have largely failed. However, many of the parent single crosses have matured, and the production on a field scale of the double-cross seed of both Wisconsin 240 and 255 has been carried out.Spacing experiments indicate that for optimum grain production a density of 6 plants/sq.yd. is required for both flint varieties and the earliest hybrids. A spatial arrangement of individual plants is to be preferred to that of groups or hills.American hybrids, in the class of ‘90 days’ to maturity, will in all but the most unfavourable seasons reach the ‘early-dent’ stage of the grain before the incidence of autumn frosts. Yields of dry matter of plants harvested in this phase have ranged from 30 to 85 cwt. of dry matter per acre. In these trials, the plant density was standardized at 4 plants/sq.yd. and higher densities may be demanded for optimal yields.The ratio of the ‘ear’ (that is, the cob, immature grain and enclosing leaf sheaths) to the total shoot weight at harvest varies greatly with the variety or hybrid. With White Horsetooth, the usual variety grown for fodder in England, no cobs are formed before the plants are killed by frost, while with the early hybrids, the ear may be half the weight of the whole shoot.The earliest variety Sibthorp from an early May sowing takes approximately 70–80 days to reach full anthesis, while ‘80-day’ American hybrids are a week later. From sowing to full maturity the period in England is from 140 to 160 days, thus compared to conditions in Minnesota the period is nearly twice as long. Because of the much slower rate of development and because of the humidity of English autumns, it is concluded that until the date of maturity can be advanced some 14 days, grain production on a field scale is not yet feasible. On the other hand, many of the American hybrids are well fitted to the production of silage. The greatest drawback to the introduction of such hybrids is the liability of the seed and seedlings to be attacked by rooks.

If used only when a preliminary F test yields significance, the usual multiple range procedures can be modified to increase the probability of detecting differences without changing the control of Type I error. The modification consists of a reduction in the critical value when comparing the largest and smallest means. Equivalence of modified and unmodified procedures in error control is demonstrated. The modified procedure is also compared with the alternative of using the unmodified range test without a preliminary F test, and it is shown that each has advantages over the other under some circumstances.

In this paper we investigate the role played by viscous heating in extensional flows of viscous threads with temperature-dependent viscosity. We show that there exists an interesting interplay between the effects of viscous heating, which accelerates thinning, and inertia, which prevents pinch-off. We first consider steady drawing of a thread that is fed through a fixed aperture at given speed and pulled with a constant force at a fixed downstream location. For pulling forces above a critical value, we show that inertialess solutions cannot exist and inertia is crucial in controlling the dynamics. We also consider the unsteady stretching of a thread that is fixed at one end and pulled with a constant force at the other end. In contrast to the case in which inertia is neglected, the thread will always pinch at the end where the force is applied. Our results show that viscous heating can have a profound effect on the final shape and total extension at pinching.

Field experiments and survey methods were used to assess competition and interaction between Lemna minor L. and Lemna trisulca L. at Delta Marsh, Manitoba. Sites were dominated by one or the other species or codominated by both. Replacement series experiments predicted codominance of L. minor and L. trisulca in an unshaded eutrophic site but predicted L. minor dominance when run for a longer time. Similar experiments conducted in a shaded eutrophic site predicted L. minor dominance. Addition series experiments showed that intraspecific and interspecific competition occurred in the unshaded site. In a eutrophic unshaded ditch, high densities of L. minor suppressed L. trisulca. In a eutrophic shaded site, high densities of L. minor and green algae inhibited L. trisulca, and in a sunny, less eutrophic site high density of each species inhibited the other. In a transplant experiment, L. minor biomass in shaded enclosures approached that found naturally in two shaded sites. Lemna trisulca persisted when shaded. Vegetative biomass trends in an unshaded eutrophic marsh ditch indicated spring and fall L. trisulca dominance and summer L. minor dominance. Shaded eutrophic sites were dominated by L. minor, whereas a less eutrophic site was dominated by L. trisulca. A model is developed to explain dominance patterns, and seasonal life-history responses are considered. Key words: Lemna, duckweed, competition, interaction, resources, light, nutrients.

Quinoa may be a promising alternative solution for arid regions, and it is necessary to test yield and mineral accumulation in grains under different soil types. Field experiments with Chenopodium quinoa (cv. CICA-17) were performed in Egypt in non-saline (electrical conductivity, 1.9 dS m−1) and saline (20 dS m−1) soils. Thirty-four chemical elements were studied in these crops. Results show different yields and mineral accumulations in the grains. Potassium (K), P, Mg, Ca, Na, Mn, and Fe are the main elements occurring in the quinoa grains, but their concentrations change between both soil types. Besides, soil salinity induced changes in the mineral pattern distribution among the different grain organs. Sodium was detected in the pericarp but not in other tissues. Pericarp structure may be a shield to prevent sodium entry to the underlying tissues but not for chloride, increasing its content in saline conditions. Under saline conditions, yield decreased to near 47%, and grain sizes greater than 1.68 mm were unfavored. Quinoa may serve as a complementary crop in the marginal lands of Egypt. It has an excellent nutrition perspective due to its mineral content and has a high potential to adapt to semi-arid and arid environments.

Compared with investing an ordinary options, investing the power options may possibly yield greater returns. On the one hand, the power option is the best choice for those who want to maximize the leverage of the underlying market movements. On the other hand, power options can also prevent the financial market changes caused by the sharp fluctuations of the underlying assets. In this paper, we investigate the power option pricing problem in which the price of the underlying asset follows the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck type of model involving an uncertain fractional differential equation. Based on critical value criterion, the pricing formulas of European power options are derived. Finally, some numerical experiments are performed to illustrate the results.

The large deflections of a simply supported beam, one end of which is free to move horizontally while the other is subjected to a moment, are investigated by means of inextensional elastica theory. The linear theory is found to be valid for relatively large angles of rotation of the loaded end. The beam becomes transitionally unstable, however, at a critical value of the bending moment parameter MIL/EI equal to 5.284. If the angle of rotation is controlled, the beam is found to become unstable when the rotation is 222.65 deg.
