Nonnative accent and the perceived grammaticality of spoken grammar forms

Abstract Scholars advocate for more classroom attention to be paid to spoken grammar which deviates from commonly taught rules of writing. However, these recommendations have not considered potential barriers that learners may encounter when using spoken grammar with L1 speakers. We investigate one such challenge: the effect of learners’ accents and degree of accentedness on how their use of these forms is subjectively perceived by L1 speakers. Ten non-expert raters rated the grammatical acceptability of four frequent spoken grammar forms, read out by 15 speakers (10 L1 Tagalog, 5 L1 English) rated as having heavy, moderate, or no accents. A one-way ANOVA revealed a significant effect of accent on grammaticality scores. Post-hoc tests showed a strong correlation between accent and perceived grammaticality, with more accented speakers scoring significantly lower on grammaticality. The discussion considers implications for spoken grammar teaching, and future research on the relationship between accent and perceived grammaticality.

Information concerning occupational commitment and career satisfaction of dentists in India is incomplete. Satisfaction of dentists with their profession and commitment towards the profession are important determinants of the future of the dental profession. Therefore, the present study examined the relationship between extrinsic rewards and career entrenchment and occupational commitment of dentists. The study also measured the effect of career entrenchment and occupational commitment on career satisfaction of dentists. Data were collected from 85 dentists of two private dental hospitals of Udaipur city, India. Of the total respondents percent (n=48) 56 per cent were male and 44 per cent (n=37) were female. The age of the respondents ranged from 23 to 56 years. 54 per cent of the respondents were employed in their current jobs for less than 10 years and 46 were in the same job for more than 10 years. The data thus collected was analyzed with the help of SPSS 21 using descriptive (mean, standard deviation, percentiles) and inferential statistics (one way ANOVA, post hoc analysis, correlation and multiple regression). The study revealed significant relationship between extrinsic rewards and career entrenchment and affective commitment of dentists. Furthermore, career entrenchment and occupational commitment were found to be significant predictors of career satisfaction. The study puts forward some suggestion for future research in this area.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to examine the relationship between developmental stages and concussions that resulted in amnesia as measured by ImPACT. Method Participants were selected from an archival de-identified sports medicine ImPACT database. The sample (N = 4,200) was primarily male (62.2%) student athletes with ages ranging from 10 to 25 years. Participants were divided into three groups: Young athletes (n = 1,400), Adolescent (n = 1,400), and Adult (n = 1,400). A One-Way ANOVA was conducted to determine the relationship between age group and prevalence of concussions resulting in anterograde or retrograde amnesia. Results The One-Way ANOVA revealed significant differences between age group and anterograde F(2,4197) = 107.449, p < .001 and retrograde amnesia F(2,4197) = 82.949, p < .001. Bonferroni pairwise comparison revealed the adolescent athlete group experienced more concussions that result in both anterograde and retrograde amnesia compared to young and adult athletes. There was no significant difference between young and adult athletes. Additionally, there is a significant difference regarding total games missed following concussion F(2,4197) = 117.723, p < .001, with adolescent athletes missing more games compared to young and adult athletes. Conclusions The findings of this study suggest adolescent athletes tend to experience more amnesia-related concussions compared to young and adult athletes. Additionally, adolescent athletes miss more games following these types of concussions. This study highlights the impact that certain types of concussions have on athletes across the developmental stages. Future research should analyze the cognitive effects of various types of concussions across the developmental stages.

Abstract This study investigates the relationship between language learning achievement and the use of language learning strategy among intermediate Chinese as a second language (L2) learners. A total of 62 students from an intermediate Chinese course participated in this study. Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) (Oxford, 1989) was used to assess participants’ strategy use frequency. Correlation, one-way ANOVA, and ANOVA post hoc tests were performed for data analysis. Key findings suggest that: (1) initiative, communicative orientation, and risk taking are good behavioral predictors of Chinese L2 achievement; (2) medium-achieving learners are more active in using strategies, especially cognitive and memory strategies. These investigations of strategy use within and across achievement groups revealed both Chinese L2 learners’ characteristics in strategy use, and also the problems and challenges that learners with different achievement levels encounter. Multiple pedagogical implications are provided at the end of this article.

Job satisfaction is the sense of well- being, good feeling and positive mental state that emerge in an incumbent worker when his obtained reward consequent upon his performance is congruent with his equitable reward.The aim of this study is to ascertain the levels of job satisfaction amongst quantity surveyors in consulting firms in Lagos, Nigeria. Biographical and job descriptive index questionnaires (JDI) were administered to gather the data. The JDI measures job satisfaction on five facets, namely, pay, promotions, supervision, co-workers and the work itself. A total of 100 questionnaires were collected and used for the study. The survey covered quantity surveyors in consulting firms in Lagos and the respondents were selected using stratified random sampling technique. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation matrix, t-test and one way anova. Findings of the study revealed that the respondents were satisfied with the relationship with co-workers, nature of work and the supervision they receive. Major sources of dissatisfaction are promotion and salaries of the respondents. This finding is a bold step and necessary benchmark for resolving major sources of dissatisfaction among quantity surveyors in consulting firms. The roles of other contextual factors on job satisfaction need to be contemplated for future research.

Purpose Employee engagement studies are popular in contemporary research because of the complexity organizations face in nurturing the performance and productivity of multi-generations of workers. The purpose of this paper is to assess association of age and dimensions of work engagement. Design/methodology/approach In total, 181 participants completed the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) to measure work engagement including the dimensions of absorption, vigor and dedication as well as demographics. One-way ANOVA and post hoc tests were conducted to examine the relationship between age and work engagement. Findings Employees 50 years of age and older were found to have statistically significant higher work engagement scores than the employees under the age of 50. Statistically significant scores were also found to be higher in absorption and dedication. Originality/value The workforce is aging with older employees becoming larger populations in organizations. Understanding how age influences employee work engagement supports human capital management strategy within organizations. HR professionals can also use the findings to develop targeted employee engagement to leverage the dedication and talents of older employees.

Considerable attention has been given to the relationship between internship and hospitality education and positive results have been extracted. More and more hospitality programs worldwide emphasize the necessity of internship; nevertheless, intern students always considered the lack of support from academic staff as a major challenges for teachers to overcome and virtual community can be exploited as a venue to provide such assistance. The present study surveyed 230 teachers and 660 intern students of hospitality programs in Taiwan and discovered significant differences existed between hospitality teachers and their intern students in terms of their perception about satisfaction, sense of belonging as well as effectiveness of using virtual communities to maintain the connectedness among the teacher and students. When two major social media are compared when being exploited as the platforms for interactions, again, significant differences were discovered with respect to the participants’ satisfaction, sense of belong and effectiveness of using Facebook, Line and two of them. Scheffe’s Post-hoc further reported that participants’ satisfaction with Line was greater than Facebook and their sense of belonging toward the class and effectiveness were stronger when Facebook and Line were used at the same time. Limitations and recommendations for future research are also included in the end of this manuscript.

elf-efficacy is an assessment of an individual's own ability to organize and perform certain actions necessary to achieve the desired outcomes, and its development is very important. The research aimed to determine whether participation in sports and success in playing sports are associated with more pronounced self-efficacy in people with disabilities, and included two studies. The aim of the first study was to examine the differences in self-efficacy between those who play sports (goalball) and those who do not play sports on a sample of people with visual impairment, as well as whether this difference exists between goalball players of different levels of performance. The aim of the second study was to examine the existence of differences in self-efficacy between wheelchair basketball players and non-wheelchair basketball players. The Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale consisting of ten statements was used as the measuring instrument and the respondents stated how much each item refers to them on a five-point Likert-type scale (from 0 to 4). In data processing the statistical method of the t-test, univariate analysis of variance (One way ANOVA), as well as the Post-Hoc test, were used. The results show that people with disabilities who play sports have more pronounced self-efficacy compared to those who do not play sports, as well as compared to athletes without disabilities. Statistical differences in self-efficacy between athletes with disabilities of different levels of performance have not been identified.

The objective of the research was to identify statistically significant differences in selected engagement indicators on Facebook – likes and shares in relation to the different types of content that brands on this platform add to. The analysis was performed on a sample of three global companies from the top 25 most valuable brands in the world and their posts. Using quantitative statistical methods – MANOVA (Multivariate analysis of variance) and Gammes-Howell post hoc test, a total of 1,280 brand posts were analyzed in order to differentiate the liking and sharing of content types. Data collection was carried out in the first half of 2018. The findings pointed to two statistically significant differences that were also interpreted in the discussion of the research. The findings have shown that in case of liking, in two cases out of three, there is a statistically significant difference in terms of the type of content added, when photos came out as those with the greatest potential to get like from Facebook users and fans. At the same time, the same finding appeared in the case of sharing, which is an even stronger form of engagement. Likewise, photos were shown to be the most promising in terms of potential content sharing by Facebook users and fans. The study provided some clues as to where this research should go further and explore the relationship more deeply in view of the more extensive quantitative research, and also the potential qualitative approach. The future research directions include analyzing companies of different types and sizes and also taking into account the contribution from other social networks with the same or similar engagement indicators.

Few studies have investigated the effects of input-based and output-based instructions on collocational knowledge of EFL learners. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of these instructional approaches on Iranian EFL learners’ productive knowledge of collocations. To this end, 80 senior high school students from three intact classes at Tali-e High School in Ahvaz, Iran, were selected. Each class was assigned to a control group (n = 28) and two experimental groups including the input group (n = 27) and the output group (n = 25). Twenty collocations were selected as the target collocations. Then, a pretest was administered to all groups. Two days after the last treatment session, an immediate posttest was given to the participants. A delayed posttest was also administered two weeks later. The results of Mixed-ANOVA, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey post hoc tests revealed that both input and output groups outperformed the control group on the immediate and delayed posttests. However, there were no significant differences between the input and output groups on the posttests. The implications and suggestions for future research are also presented.

The Internet is a massive, computer-linked network system used globally. In spite of the widely perceived merits of the tool, the excessive use of Internet is a primary attention of researchers all over the world.. Now, the term Internet addiction has become a worldwide and problematic phenomenon. The purpose of the present study was to find out the relationship of internet addiction with “Morning lateness” subscale of SWAPQ . The study was conducted on the sample of 170 (non- internet addict (45), moderate addict (85) and severe addict (40)) college students of Madhya Pradesh (M.P.), age range between 18 to 23 years. Young Internet Addiction (IAT), Sleep Wake Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SWAPQ) were used for this study. Descriptive statistics, One-way ANOVA and Post-Hoc mean comparison test were applied to determine the significant difference on “Morning lateness” subscale of SWAPQ between internet addicts and non internet addicts. The significant differences were found between them.
