English
Economists are interested in the marketing concept try to apply it in agricultural development. Marketing concept has several aspects, i.e. economy, business, and policy. Some people interpret marketing concept in terms of macro aspect (national level) and micro aspect (firm level). This paper proposes to examine marketing concept in term of macro and micro levels. Examining the marketing aspect at macro level will be useful to increase the marketing efficiency of agricultural commodity at regional or national level. It will also improve marketing efficiency in supply chain of agricultural commodity. Reviews on empirical studies indicate that some agricultural commodities have low marketing efficiency causing low competitiveness in the domestic and global markets. Enhancing marketing efficiency requires government intervention intended to reduce market distortion and high transaction cost in the supply chain of agricultural commodity. To achieve marketing efficiency of agricultural commodity, it is necessary to integrate macro-economic policy and micro-economic activities in the supply chain of agricultural commodity.

In this study, an inter-continental agricultural pellet supply chain is modeled, and the production cost and price of agricultural pellets are estimated and compared against the recent cost and price of wood pellets in the global marketplace. The inter-continental supply chain is verified and validated using an integration of an interactive mapping application and a simulation platform. The integrated model is applied to a case study in which agricultural pellets are produced in six locations in Canada and shipped and discharged at the three major ports in Western Europe. The cost of agricultural pellets in the six locations is estimated to be in the range of EUR 92–95/tonne (CAD 138–142/tonne), which is comparable with the recent cost of wood pellets produced in small-scale pellet plants (EUR 99–109/tonne). The average agricultural pellet price shipped from the six plants to the three ports in Western Europe is estimated to be in a range of EUR 183–204 (CAD 274–305/tonne), 29–42% more expensive that the average recent price of wood pellets (EUR 143/tonne) at the same ports. There are several potential areas in the agricultural pellet supply chains that can reduce the pellet production and distribution costs in the mid and long terms, making them affordable supplement to the existing wood pellet markets. Potential economic activities generated by the production of pellets in farm communities can be significant. The generated annual revenue in the biomass logistics system in all six locations is estimated to be about CAD 21.80 million. In addition, the logistics equipment fleet needs 176 local operators with a potential annual income of CAD 2.18 million.

In a national economy, the considerable part of its available territory consists of the so called rural area which is mainly used by the agricultural sector. In our days, the rural areas are characterized by the loss of their economic, administrative etc. functions. The agricultural sector is able to utilize the rural areas, though other economic activities play important role as well. To evaluate the agricultural sector in terms of the agribusiness, it is clear that the situation of the agricultural sector is not only decisive for the rural areas, but also for the whole national economy, and therefore, it is part of its balanced development.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, many cities, states, and countries have ‘locked down’, restricting economic activities in non-essential sectors. Such lockdowns have substantially shrunk production in most countries. This study examines how the economic effects of lockdowns in different regions interact through supply chains, which are a network of firms for production, by simulating an agent-based model of production using supply-chain data for 1.6 million firms in Japan. We further investigate how the complex network structure affects the interactions between lockdown regions, emphasising the role of upstreamness and loops by decomposing supply-chain flows into potential and circular flow components. We find that a region’s upstreamness, intensity of loops, and supplier substitutability in supply chains with other regions largely determine the economic effect of the lockdown in the region. In particular, when a region lifts its lockdown, its economic recovery substantially varies depending on whether it lifts the lockdown alone or together with another region closely linked through supply chains. These results indicate that the economic effect produced by exogenous shocks in a region can affect other regions and therefore this study proposes the need for inter-region policy coordination to reduce economic loss due to lockdowns.

Bioenergy supply chains can offer social benefits. In most related research, the total number of created jobs is used as the indicator of social benefits. Only a few of them quantify social benefits considering the different impact of economic activities in different locations. In this paper, a new method of measuring the social benefits of bioethanol supply chains is proposed that considers job creation, biomass purchase, and the different impacts of economic activities in different locations. A multi-objective mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed to address the optimal design of a bioethanol supply chain that maximizes both economic and social benefits. The ε-constraint method is employed to solve the model and a set of Pareto-optimal solutions is obtained that shows the relationship between the two objectives. The developed model is applied to case studies in Liaoning Province in Northeast China. Actual data are collected as practical as possible for the feasibility and effectiveness of the results. The results show that the bioethanol supply chain can bring about both economic and social benefits in the given area and offers governments a better and more efficient way to create social benefits. The effect of the government subsidy on enterprises’ decisions about economic and social benefits is discussed.

Malang is one of the cities that supports the creation of a competitive creative economy. There are a number of industrial clusters spread throughout the Malang area, one of which is the Sanitair cluster. Industry security in Malang was very high before the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a decline in the economy and in activity in the creative economy sector in Malang, including in the Sanitair industry cluster. The economic shock caused by the COVID-19 pandemic gradually subsided as the stability of the domestic financial market and economic sectors stretched. However, the supply and demand sides of the industry were both hit, so recovery efforts still need more time. The spread of the virus also has not shown signs of ending along with the increasing trend of cases and confirmed deaths. The demand for various social and economic activities is getting stronger, marked by loosening of physical distancing in many areas. On the other hand, the existing public health infrastructure is still inadequate. So, there is a high risk to moving back the various wheels of social and economic activity in the Sanitair industry cluster in Malang. COVID-19 affected the supply chain of the SME industry, including the absorption of products, the availability of raw materials, suppliers and the distribution process of the Sanitair industry. Keywords: Economic downturn, Industrial cluster, supply chain

This paper aims to analyse the innovation performance, within a set of economic activities - namely the regional agrofood supply chain - that characterize the pattern of productive specialization of Tagus Valley, under the hypothesis of several determinant factors, of entrepreneurial and/or territorial nature, framed by an analysis model extensible to other regions. Following an investigation of interpretative nature, methodology for collecting data was guided through triangulation of sources: direct observation; semi-structured interviews to individuals representing the various categories of agents involved, and documentary research. These were complemented with an inquiry to business agents, whose data were subject to statistical treatment. Besides the identification of an important set of deficits of institutional nature, inhibitors of innovation performance, the study also allowed formulating various proposals for the purpose of territorial governance, highlighting the need to strengthen the transfer of knowledge to the micro and small companies engaged in agricultural activities. In general, this paper proposes an analytical framework to a better understanding of innovation dynamics in any region according to its specificities including the role of public institutions in this process.

Global narratives around the links between deforestation and agricultural commodity production have led to the application of voluntary zero-deforestation agreements between companies, governments, and civil society. The continued tropical deforestation warrants a re-examination of this approach in order to customize its application for a particular location. Our paper contributes to this by exploring the spatial associations between deforestation and the production of cacao, coffee, and oil palm in the Amazon region in Peru. The geographical overlaps between deforestation, and the distribution of these commodity crops, indicate four types of spatial associations: (1) a high degree of deforestation and a high degree of commodity production (high-high); (2) a high degree of deforestation and a low degree of commodity production (high-low); (3) a low degree of deforestation and a high degree of commodity production (low-high); and (4) a low degree of deforestation and a low degree of commodity production (low-low). On the basis of these associations, we present four scenarios in which zero-deforestation supply chain interventions may operate in Peru and argue that broadening the perspective of such interventions by adopting a global value chain lens can improve the use of previously deforested lands, prevent unintended or future deforestation and, in turn, ensure that no forest area is left behind.

The paper analyzes the advantages of using the blockchain technology in the supply chain management. It is determined that the blockchain will simplify the procedure of the government control over the supply chain and contribute to the implementation of the state policy aiming to reduce the level of counterfeit products and improve the quality of goods entering the retail network, which will have a direct impact on the socio-economic development of the regions. The subject of research is the organizational and technological mechanism of the interaction between business entities in the process of introduction and application of the blockchain technology for supply chain management. The purpose of the paper was to find out how to use the blockchain in logistics in the most effective way. The paper presents the summary of works of Russian and foreign economists and identifies the main areas of existing and prospective blockchain studies, formulates the principles for the promotion of the blockchain technology in logistics and identifies factors that impede the active use of the blockchaining by Russian and foreign businessmen. The necessity of the DLT/blockchain legalization in economic activities and determining the responsibility for including incomplete and/or unreliable information in a distributed ledger is substantiated.
